David Monroe found them thru first we feast like a week ago, i want to say the struggle is real but its very fun to watch and inspired me a craft beer guy to get a bottle og glenfiddich 12 and by divine intervention a bottle of 1792 and seagrams vo from 1965 fell into my lap. hes so right about canadian whiskeys, the vo is just so close with almost candy finish, it just needs more something.
It's about damn time. We've been waiting here all dang day.

My wife is from Arvada and swears by it. She took me there once to try it and I have to say Casa Benita makes Taco Bell seem like High End Mexican food. Do you remember which episode that was? A manufacturing question for Daniel. from concept to bottle, how does a distill plan out a flavor profile? In beer brewing, you can sample the wort and get an idea of the flavor. does this apply with the mash bill pre barrel aging? given the sheer number of variables in making whisky, how can the distiller ensure they get the right flavor without years or decades or trial and error?
Honestly, it's a shit ton of experience combined with trial and error. When you've worked in a distillery, you get a feel for what the whisky coming off the still should taste like to end up the way you need it. Then you start to get a feel for how barrels are aging around a specific warehouse. And then in blending, you get a feel for how mixing flavors works to create a profile you're trying to achieve. All time and experience.
Got my first scotch tonight. Glenfiddich 12. Been awhile since I have done whisky. Mainly a vodka person. Well apparently I had a whisky glass set. Wondering your thoughts on whisky stones.

I thought I recognized that bottle when I saw Daniel pull it out, but it took me until I got home to realize. I have a bottle of their J. Becher Straight Rye that I managed to mooch from my mother. We were in Bend, OR for a family vacation and we were walking through a farmers market when we stumbled upon an Oregon Spirits booth. I had forgotten my wallet at the airbnb so I looked on longingly while my family tried their selection of whiskeys (I was 22 at the time and didn't have my ID). About an hour later I managed to convince my mom to go back and buy a bottle of the rye with the promise that I would split the cost 60/40 with her when I got my wallet back. After a long and exhausting day we finally made it back to the arbnb only to find out I didn't have enough cash to pay my portion. So I promised I'd stop at the store and grab some money, but in the mean time we should drink some of the whiskey. My mom decided immediately that she hated it and wanted nothing to do with it and that I could have the bottle. By this point she had forgotten that I owed her money for the bottle because of how much she disliked it and, as a favor, I agreed to take it off her hands >:)
Laughing right along with you (with some Jamesons Caskmates Stout Edition), but wondering what your take is on Blair Athol, which a friend brought me after a business trip to Scotland. Aside, I still prefer Lagavulin.
The only one I have is a Signatory special edition. I remember liking it when I tried it, but I'll have to go back and double check.

You guys should talk about the new stouted whiskey craze. I do love me a bourbon barrel stout, but have yet to try a stouted bourbon. I've got a friend who brews good beer, and I thought I might buy him some used staves from the local bourbon distillery to add to his next stout. Then take those stouted staves and somehow get their bourbon to soak in it for a bit. Genius or mad scientist?
I like the idea of this! Supposedly the Charbay distillery that made the hoppy whisky we hated is sending us a whisky made from a stout beer. We'll see!

How far along is your guys's whiskey? I'd really like to buy a bottle when it comes out!
We haven't even started the building construction yet! But we bought 12 barrels of bourbon from MGP. They're currently sitting in a warehouse in Kentucky. Our barrels are: 120 Proof +/- ; distilled June 2015; Bourbon in 53 Gallon Oak Barrels; Mash Bill: 75% Corn / 21% Rye / 4% Malted Barley
Yah, we're seeing if we can deliver something truly classic before getting too experimental. The sample I had from our barrels was really tasty, so I'm hopeful.
I think this is more a Daniel question, if I asked Rex I’d probably get swill.
To Daniel, what is the “hardest” good whiskey? You guys often talk about good entry whiskey, but now that I’m past the light easy ones, I want to try some hard stuff. Pro whiskies, eg, Lag 8 is too easy now.

I'd think you could start with the Campbeltown whisky selection. It's pretty damn hefty. Go straight to Springbank 12yr Cask Strength if you can find it.

What about a trivia question to pick a winner? Then randomly select someone who got it correct. Things like, "What whiskey reminds Daniel of South Padre Island? What is Rex's Kryptonite? Daniel says he would wear a jersey from which whiskey company? Where does Rex buy his sunglasses?" Or even general whiskey trivia. I guess people would mooch the answer from those who know it though, but I'm guessing that may be encouraged. Also, is it bad that I know all these answers?

What is the most money you guys have spent on a whisky? was it worth it?
Me personally.. $500. It was the Bunnahabhain 25, and it was a gift. Their reaction made it completely worth it.

I'm moving to Europe in a few months and can only bring one maybe two bottles of whisky with me. The choices are Laphroig 10, Glenfiddich 12, Aberfeldy 16, and The Deveron 12. I'm in a toss, I love the Deveron and The Aberfeldy as easy drinking scotches but the Laphroig is just... Laphroig. Anyone one have some input on deciding between easy drinking scotch and a heavily peated scotch?
Dainty Canadian why not just buy them in Europe? I know, it's probably a little cheaper in Canada but traveling for 10+ hours with a delicate and heavy bottle of scotch would suck?
If I was going for one I'd pick the one with the most fight in it like a laphroaig, it will last longer if it's an occasional sipper.
True, However I'll be quite busy for about a month so it would be useful to have a bottle there. I could definitely go over to Scotland and pick up a few bottles a few months after I arrive though. If it comes down to needed to bring a bottle I think I'll stick with the Laphroaig. Merci sir.

not likely. depends on how full it is.
Its about 2/3 of the way full. If it can't be saved do you have any suggestions for a proper burial of this forsaken whisky?
I'd say taste it again before you commit. If it tastes vaguely watery or slightly soapy, you'll know it's done for. If it still tastes like whisky, keep it and drink it normally. It might be a slightly lower proof now, but it could be fine.
That's not going to hurt it.

Your lunacy is real. Between you and me, (because i doubt many people will read this far down in a comment thread) - ive been treating this channel like an experiment. The youtube "best practices" are being applied in phases so we can see exactly which actions deliver real results. In the near future, we'll start giving a nod to our playlists. Also improving the channel description and welcome video, among other things.
Rex now that interests me. I always like seeing people testing what works for themselves. I would like something like a Facebook group for your users though. That way we could share pictures. For instance last video I commented that I had gotten a Compass Box Great King St but didn't realize at the time there are two different versions with vastly different tastes. A picture would have conveyed that more quickly.

I did not care for this whiskey. The guy at Total Wine and More said they were exclusive to their stores now. He had a booth set up and gave me a little taste, which at the time was fine. By the time I was done with the bottle I was glad it was gone. Last few drinks were Oregon Spirit...and Coke.
