Several years ago the Weller Special Reserve went for $17-18, the 12 year and Antique were mid-$20s. Now I just saw the SR going for $60. It was bottom or near bottom shelf whiskey and now it's a unicorn bottle. Really stupid!

Great video! Really enjoy videos like this where people provide their options to hard to find bottles so greatly appreciated since i'm someone who just goes to big retail stores like Total Wine and I can't seem to find many good local mom/pop liquor stores around me to form a relationship with, so I'll never see the sought after bottles. It would be fun if you could give alternatives to the BTAC line up one day too! Last, I don't have too much wheated bourbon experience, but I did like the makers 46 cask strength more then regular cask strength.
Some might disagree...but if you like the Bernheim wheat whiskey, the Woodford Reserve wheat whiskey is pretty good too. I find it is a nice easy sipper.

I just happened to buy the green bottle at my local store the other day. They had a whole endcap of it. I had no idea it was hard to get. It was pretty good but not spectacular.
For my palate, Wilderness Trail is the best wheated bourbon I have ever had. The honey, vanilla and nuttiness with just a little bit of hay funk at the end. Just a nice dram to sip on.
I agree in the Larceny, but would recommend barrel proof, since it’s easy to find. I love Old Elk wheated bourbon, even better than my Weller 107 Antique. It’s also super easy to find here in Colorado.
Very Awesome Video. I actually dislike the Weller Line as well as Larceny. I feel the Makers Mark Line blows Weller away. Just my palate and opinion. Thank You for the information and keep the awesome videos coming 👍🥃
Larceny is my current favorite bourbon that I own. Tonight I tried a Bulleit Single Barrel and it was absolutely delicious. Really gave my Larceny a run for it’s money.
Perfect timing for this video! I’ve been a big fan of makers 46 and wanted to branch out in the wheated bourbons. Old Elk is the one I was looking to pick up next.
Thanks for the Old Elk comments. I've heard great things about it, including from you. So bought it, tried it, and now it's my house Bourbon (I'm a cocktail maker not a sipper). I really like it!
The wilderness Trail and Old Elk are both excellent. I’m looking forward to trying the Wilderness Trail 6year. Great video. Hope your project went well.
4:22 The first time I tried Larceny I didn't care for it. Today I got another bottle, and the first glass wasn't bad. My palate's done some learning in the past few months. 🙂 I've had Maker's Mark regular and 46, and like them. What I'd think of the barrel proof I don't know, but one of these days... The Rebel 100 is good too, and it's only $25-30. 🙂 The rest I've not had at all.

unfortunately you are a little late to the game. I just got into it before the ...it hit the fan. For a while I could find Weller 107 easily. I haven't seen it in years now. I still have one bottle ... and I haven't opened it because it is such a rare commodity. I have 3 Eagle Rares, it was reasonably easy to get in my area until recently ... and again I haven't seen it for the last 6 months. Ugh.
1792 Sweet Wheat is great, but our tour guide at the 1792 Distillery this Tuesday said don’t expect the sweet wheat until around November. Sadly 1792 is discontuing tours and the store end of June.
I've had all the Weller bourbons and my favorite is the Full Proof, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the Special Reserve, although many people clown it because of the lower proof. I've always been a big fan of Larceny, but I've also been curious about Old Elk and Wilderness Trail. Based on your recommendation I won't hesitate. I'm picking up a bottle! Thanks for the unbiased opinions and reviews.
I would very much like to thank you for this video they gave me some curious new things to try and be on the lookout for. Today I stumbled into my local store and found a bottle of this old elk with a limited edition elk topper and was able to grab it for $50. They actually had to and of course I had to budget myself and stick to just one until I spend a half an hour running errands and decided I just had to go back for the second one that was on the shelf. This is where I was reminded of the lesson that you take advantage of your opportunities when they are before you because the second one was already gone. That being said I'm very pleased to have had the opportunity to snag at least one for my cabinet.
Makers Mark Cask Strength is really slept on. I just got some this week and it’s my favorite wheated Mashbill so far and it’s not even close. The others I’ve had are Weller SR, Green River Wheated, Middle West Wheat and Makers 46. The Cask Strength also makes great old fashions without feeling bad about using something expensive or hard to get.
Found an ABC Rebel Yell 10 yr store pick in Orange Beach last October. Bought on a chance as I didn’t have any knowledge of the Rebel Yell. Fantastic bottle with unique taste I haven’t experienced with any other bourbon.
I have the Special Reserve and Antique 107... I like them both and when I see them they are MSRP... the Bernheim is GREAT! THAT'S one of my go to whiskey choices
Makers cask strength is so good. I agree its not super complex, but the flavors there are just really great. Plus high proof wheaters are thirsted for right now. So 40 bucks its hard to beat
Not sure how far east it's distributed, but Wyoming Whisky Small Batch (68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley, $40 MSRP) is my preferred wheater out west. It's smooth at 88 proof, but has just enough personality from the high plains prairie wheat to make me want to keep coming back, especially at the price point. Really good, unique stuff.
Will look for some of these. My lady is not a huge bourbon fan, and she usually prefers a Scotch, something with a little peat. I got her a Bunnahabbain for a Burns Night Dinner, and she loved it. When she does drink bourbon, Maker's has been a favorite, so I have tried different wheated bourbons. Thanks.
Wilderness Trail is currently a single barrel. It is going to small batch soon. I love their wheated offering. Totally with you regarding Makers Cask Strength. I like their base 90 proof offering, not to mention the limited editions. That Rebel 10 is good but getting hard to find. I am curious to see how it will be when it is totally Lux Row.
Another great video !!! Just whipped up an amazing bourbon cocktail - Rattlesnake Rosie's chocolate covered peanut butter pie bourbon cream from Iron smoke distillery in Rochester NY - cold brew coffee and a shot of Russell's reserve 10. Ice in a glass 3/4 glass of cold brew coffee, stir in the shot of Russells and top with 2 oz of Rattlesnake Rosie's it's absolutely delicious
Just bought a bottle of Old Elk wheated bourbon and haven't tried it yet. Nice to hear your take on it and now looking forward to a sip or two of the stuff.
Great video! Love to see the educational stuff, more people should know this! It’s also why bottle labels should include as much information as possible so consumers can make informed decisions.
Just picked up an old elk wheated bourbon upon your recommendation excited to try it tonight and had a surprise when I got there they had the Weller Special Reserve so I was able to pick up my first bottle of that excited to try that as well
Love Old Elk and glad you liked the makers cask strength....definitely underrated. In central Ohio we have Weller special reserve all over but alot of us are on the hunt for 1792 sweet wheat...almost impossible to get in ohio. Keep up the great videos!
This list is much appreciated. Most of these are attainable to me at retail. The word may have gotten out on Old Elk though. In my area as soon as those land they sell out.
Totally agree about the Rebel offerings! Disappointed you didn't include Woodford Wheat, it's easy to find and a total sleeper in the wheat category. Keep up the good work!
@@slbdrinks it's a must-have in that category. Would give many on your list a run for their money and would probably outperform a couple Weller offerings blind. Thanks for the genuine honesty and entertaining content!
Rebel all day!!! Well, at least after work, lol. I stumbled on this a year ago and was not disappointed. A little hard to find here in the PNW, but that adds to experience IMO. Cheers
The Maker's Mark lineup is my #1. Plus the Redemption Wheated Bourbon is my #2. When it comes to Wheated Bourbon. I just tried a new for me Bourbon, Legent. I've only had 2 neat pours & 1 pour on a block of ice. But so far it's not bad. A lot of people say it's gotta open up 1st so won't write down my review of it yet.
I agree -- Larceny is my Go To bourbon. I prefer an easier proof point, those 100+ distillations are too hot for my palate. Makers was the first wheater I every tasted and I was not disappointed. It a good 3rd choice. Old Elk is my newest discovery, it's a bit pricey where I am but worth it as my 2nd choice. I often buy two bottles a month but Old Elk I would get solo and nurse it all month.
Redemption, Woodford wheated, old elk, and makers private selection are my current favorite wheateds. Most of the time I buy these bottles priced way above retail I realize it's not really worth it. So lately I've been sticking to those bottles!
Thanks! Adding to my list of bourbons to try! If anyone gets to Bardstown Ky, go to Mammy’s Diner, about 1 block of the courthouse square, and less than a mile from 1792 Distillery. Great breakfast, after a 10:00 bourbon tasting and tour🙃
CYPB : Create Your Perfect Bourbon . I found the Antique 107 when I visited my sis in OH , because where I live in VA all of them are available just on the lottery
It's 6:30a.m. and I'm watching a video of bourbon recommendations. It's going to be a great day. I like wheated bourbon and appreciate this video very much. Question- have you done a video on Japanese Whiskey?
That Wilderness Trail BiB is very intriguing to me. I get a lot of pastry or bready notes off of it. I didn't think I would like that in a bourbon, but the fact that it's so different, and not off-putting, makes it one of my favorites on your list. For the record, I don't like Larceny. It grew on me as I drank it, but I chalk that up to acclimation. All of this said: I prefer the high-rye mash bills. But what makes bourbon great is its diversity within that 51% Corn window. Love your channel. Keep up the awesome content.
If you're in the michigan area. Journeyman distillery has 2 wheat whiskeys that are phenomenal. Buggy Whip Wheat and Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey. Both are very good
Nice list. I agree with everything you said, about the Weller and how hard it is to find, and about this list. I have the Larceny, MM Cask Strength (and MM46 Cask Strength) and Wilderness Trail yellow label. I have the Old Elk Wheat Whiskey, too, which is nice but pricey. Great video, thanks for posting it.
@@slbdrinks you are welcome!! When you all make it to KY, definitely get a bottle. Becoming a tad scarce as I think Heaven Hill is emphasizing Larceny, but Old Fitz is the BEST of the bottom shelfers and beats a lot of higher priced bottles!
I definitely need to visit Old Elk. I tend to walk by it, but I think I will give it a shot. I don't get Rebel around me. You get a lot of interesting juice in your area. Funny,I'm in the middle or edge of Bourbon/Whiskey country and seems like we don't get much in the way of new or interesting. But the search is part of the fun and taking a chance.
Not sure about prices then versus now since I’m new to this, but here in Kentucky, Larceny is about $27 a bottle today. Some places more but that’s prolly the average.
Nice selection. While not on a national distribution level yet, but a really nice one is Monk's Road. At 94 proof and like $43 it's a nice comparable Wheater.
i think that is a nice spread on your bar! i love makers cask. i got lucky and found one in a CVS pharmacy near my house for 50% off! (you can buy booze everywhere and any day of the week in louisiana) makers is really hard to beat because they are available in most places and the bang for the buck is pretty awesome. nice episode - thank you for putting it out there. cheers.
I have Bernheim on the shelf. It’s a good P3. I’d pick it over Larceny. 1792 Sweet Wheat is delicious. Haven’t pulled the trigger on the Old Elk yet but I got a feeling I will.
Great video. Amazing how bottles are easier to find in different regions. I have yet to see a Rebel in the wild, yet my liquor store gets Weller Special Reserve every month. The Old Elk is really tasty. I didn't appreciate the Larceny regular, but the barrel proof version is really good. Thanks for your videos. Also has anyone else made reference of Trenton being like the guy next door on Home Improvement? Wilson.
I love your reviews, and blind tastings. The Sweet Sixteen was well done. My question is - why exactly do distilleries have their mash bills as undisclosed? It's not like we can distill it at home. Of the wheateds you showed Larceny is on my go to list.
Kurt! I wake up this morning after not being on UA-cam for a couple days and see this lol. I have a video scheduled for today about Weller and Wilderness trail wheated mashbill and man I think it kills Weller!
The only ones of these Ive tasted is the Larceny and the Weller Special Reserve. Huge fan of the Larceny. I can get it for around $22 in DFW, so great price, great whisky.
I'll just say that, Ohio sucks being a "controlled state" for Bourbons!! No one should have to drive to Kentucky, Indiana, to find top shelf bourbons. I'm not saying that I can't find basic Weller's or Old Elk and others compared but the higher levels like the Antique 107 or the other flagship bottles are impossible to find. Great review sir!!
That’s weird because all of my bottles I have came from Cincinnati (visiting family) I always bring back a full checked bag. I do see Weller in phoenix but SR is $100 Weller Red is almost $200 and Full Proof is $250-280. Hard pass
The first time I bought Weller 12yo, it was considered a cheaper alternative to Makers Mark. Considered not quite as good as MM, but cheaper and more generally available. My how times have changed.
Of the ones you presented here, I can only get the Larceny and regular Maker's Mark. The others I can't even find online or in any stores, but then again I live outside the US so the selection is bit limited, not bad but limited. Wish I could try them alongside the Weller ones.
Thank you for the video. I enjoy wheated bourbons and this was a great video and recommendations. I would really like to see you do a Blind tasting on these. Larceny is my go to. Love the channel your presentation and information. Keep up the great work. God bless brother

The old elk caught my attention after hearing the mash bill. Not sure if maker's c.s. or weller 12 will be on my bar next.. old elk for sure.Nice show.
Dry flys wheat whiskey is absolutely delicious. Both the regular and the barrel proof version are amazing and an excellent value. Not enough people talking about them yet
Antique 107 is my favorite, though I have not tried the full proof. All great wheated bourbons (have them all), but not better than Weller. Thanks for the tip on the Bernheim; I will pick up a bottle to try.
Hey fellas glad to see a Colorado whiskey on here. The good news for those of us who live here, the Old Elk wheated is $60 at stores. Have you tried the Old Elk Double Wheat yet? It’s a 107 proof and I’m hearing people call in the Antique 107 killer. Would love to see what you think about that.

We go there every time we stop in Bardstown
Will stop next time we visit!
CYPB : Create Your Perfect Bourbon . I found the Antique 107 when I visited my sis in OH , because where I live in VA all of them are available just on the lottery
20 years ago I used to drink Weller Antique in the old white label bottle all the time, it wasn't expensive...boy how times have changed
Just picked up a bottle of Old Elk , one of my favorites now!
No doubt! Glad you liked it!
It's 6:30a.m. and I'm watching a video of bourbon recommendations. It's going to be a great day. I like wheated bourbon and appreciate this video very much.
Question- have you done a video on Japanese Whiskey?
Not yet. I believe I have enough bottles to pull that off so will keep it in mind!
Great Video as always!!! I am still trying to hunt the Rebel Yell 10yr. It's a really hard find but everything else. I can grab at anytime.
That one does come and go so hopefully you can find one!
Try the Rebel Cask Strength.its great!
@@DavidSmith-ee2yf Thanks!! I have the rebel cask strength and love it. Is it similar??
Somewhat just a bit more zip in proof
That Wilderness Trail BiB is very intriguing to me. I get a lot of pastry or bready notes off of it. I didn't think I would like that in a bourbon, but the fact that it's so different, and not off-putting, makes it one of my favorites on your list. For the record, I don't like Larceny. It grew on me as I drank it, but I chalk that up to acclimation. All of this said: I prefer the high-rye mash bills. But what makes bourbon great is its diversity within that 51% Corn window. Love your channel. Keep up the awesome content.
You are spot on with the WT! I will def be digging into that one more!
If you're in the michigan area. Journeyman distillery has 2 wheat whiskeys that are phenomenal. Buggy Whip Wheat and Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey. Both are very good
I am not far away from Journeyman and have visited on occasion! Thanks for the recommendations!
I was able to get a bottle of special reserve last summer. I overpaid for it, $65, however I got a bottle of Herradura Anejo for a great price.
Thank you!
Definitely added a few to my wish list from this. I am on a wheated kick right now. One of my new favorites is the Holladay Soft Red Wheat.
Old Fitzgerald (now at 80 proof) standard at $12 … hard to beat! If you are in KY, must get.
Thanks for the recommendation!
That is hard to believe considering your area. Plz, give OE a try.
Awesome list Kurt!!!
I keep a bottle of wilderness trail on the bar. It's some tasty juice. Love the content Kurt!!!
You the Mannn!!!😂😂😂
Cheers!!!
Thanks so much lol! WT is a bit new to me but I like the bottle I have for sure!
my Local GROCERY LIQOUR STORE just had the entire WELLER line up at good prices!
I bought Antique 107 for $67
Not sure about prices then versus now since I’m new to this, but here in Kentucky, Larceny is about $27 a bottle today. Some places more but that’s prolly the average.
Nice selection. While not on a national distribution level yet, but a really nice one is Monk's Road. At 94 proof and like $43 it's a nice comparable Wheater.
I was sipping on Old Elk when I found this video. Great choices!
Hey that’s fantastic!
i think that is a nice spread on your bar! i love makers cask. i got lucky and found one in a CVS pharmacy near my house for 50% off! (you can buy booze everywhere and any day of the week in louisiana) makers is really hard to beat because they are available in most places and the bang for the buck is pretty awesome. nice episode - thank you for putting it out there. cheers.
50% off you absolutely cannot beat that!
I have Bernheim on the shelf. It’s a good P3.
I’d pick it over Larceny.
1792 Sweet Wheat is delicious.
Haven’t pulled the trigger on the Old Elk yet but I got a feeling I will.
OE is fantastic! Agree with you on the Bernheim.
The ones I have, couldn't agree more. Going out today and see if I can pickup some others for Easter Sunday Family Dinner 🥃👍🇺🇸
Enjoy your Easter Sunday!
Great video. Saw a Weller Special Reserve at my local liquor store and should have picked it up. Was $40.
That was def a fair price!
Wilson.
Yes! Hahaha! That’s an excellent observation!
I love your reviews, and blind tastings. The Sweet Sixteen was well done. My question is - why exactly do distilleries have their mash bills as undisclosed? It's not like we can distill it at home. Of the wheateds you showed Larceny is on my go to list.
To be honest that doesn’t make sense to me either and I have no idea why they would not disclose the mashbill.
Kurt! I wake up this morning after not being on UA-cam for a couple days and see this lol. I have a video scheduled for today about Weller and Wilderness trail wheated mashbill and man I think it kills Weller!
Hey great minds think alike lol! The WT is new to me but I really thought it had some great character! I will be looking for your vid soon!
@@slbdrinks it’s out now so whenever you’re free give it a look! Great stuff man love what you do!
You as well buddy!
The only ones of these Ive tasted is the Larceny and the Weller Special Reserve. Huge fan of the Larceny. I can get it for around $22 in DFW, so great price, great whisky.
Excellent!
Thank you, definitely going to try some of your picks. 🤘
Thank you! Sorry you have a hard time finding some of those bottles!
That’s weird because all of my bottles I have came from Cincinnati (visiting family) I always bring back a full checked bag. I do see Weller in phoenix but SR is $100 Weller Red is almost $200 and Full Proof is $250-280. Hard pass
Try living in PA for bourbon - what a joke. I get some of my best bottles from OH and it's the land of Weller.
The first time I bought Weller 12yo, it was considered a cheaper alternative to Makers Mark. Considered not quite as good as MM, but cheaper and more generally available. My how times have changed.
Wow, times have definitely changed.
Larceny is my go to for sure. Love it. Cheers from 🇨🇦🥃👍
MM cask strength is SO good, love it
Yes!
I got the Old Elk for about $30 bucks at Costco. It is outstanding. The taste reminds me of pound cake and toasted marshmallow
Wow fantastic price! Kudos!
Just stumbled across Doc Whiskey at Total Wine and Spirits. Stunned by the higher proof sweetness.
I’m looking for something without the baking spices flavor or if it’s there extremely faint.
Great video. I'm finding out that i like wheated Bourbons the most. Is there a place that shows all wheated bourbons and those finished in wine cast?
Of the ones you presented here, I can only get the Larceny and regular Maker's Mark. The others I can't even find online or in any stores, but then again I live outside the US so the selection is bit limited, not bad but limited. Wish I could try them alongside the Weller ones.
I prefer Wheated Bourbons and always looking for others beside BT. As such, I love this video. Thanks!
Saw a bottle of special reserve here but it was an hour drive - almost did it but missed out and am still kicking myself
Thank you for the video. I enjoy wheated bourbons and this was a great video and recommendations. I would really like to see you do a Blind tasting on these. Larceny is my go to. Love the channel your presentation and information. Keep up the great work. God bless brother
Appreciate your kindness! A blind taste would be awesome! Throw in a Weller pour with the rest just to see how it goes.
Thanks guys so damn much. This is by far my favorite burbon channel! An American working man and his awkward son (sorry Trenton J/K but not really) reviewing our nation's spirit in fun and positive ways. 'MERICA!!! I live in a small town and scored a 750 of larceny for 20 bucks!
I don’t think he’s awkward at all😂
Hi Kurt, I enjoy your u- tube Bourbon Videos, I was curious on to how many Bourbons you have in your collection? I love your views and Videos on the many different types of Bourbons as well! I love Trenton as well! I am a newcomer to the Bourbon World, as I am connecting with my 2 sons.
My wife found Weller's antique at a gas station in alturas California 119$ plus tax if your passing through give them a try
Thanks for the recommendation! Never tried dry fly so will need to get it on my list!
Antique 107 is my favorite, though I have not tried the full proof. All great wheated bourbons (have them all), but not better than Weller. Thanks for the tip on the Bernheim; I will pick up a bottle to try.
How could you leave off redemption wheat from the list? Or 1843 Nicholson?
Weller is a very solid pour that’s for sure!
Double wheat is spectacular.
Great episode.. Some great ideas to explore. I find it surprising that Redemption Wheated is never mentioned. That is what I found to replace the Wellers Reserve..
Truthfully I haven’t had the Redemption wheated. I need to do that.
@@slbdrinks Both Old Elk Wheated Bourbon and Redemption Wheated are distilled by MPG and they have identical Mash Bills. Both are fantastic
Try some Oregon Spirit bottles. I hear their wheat is good. I really like their rye and its 100% rye. Really good!
Larceny is too peppery for me. 🤷♂️
That Rebel 10 is fantastic.
Are the others peppery?
I would say no. Most wheaters have a softer appeal.
Big fan ! Question .. Is it Rebel 10 or Rebel YELL 10 ? I dont see Yell on the bottle. Thank you. Mike Atlanta GA
It has been changed to exclude “yell”. So just Rebell 10 yr.
