    Yes !!! About damn time !! LOL ! I wasn't really trying to be a ball-buster, but since everything is more expensive here in Ontario (Craigellachie 13 is $80) I like to get some opinions I trust before I buy. So thanks guys. (btw, my name is Joel, if you don't want to read my goofy user name)

    I bought that malt directly in Dufftown, Scotland! Great explosion of flavours in the mouth... but even more enhanced with a few drops of water. It really makes a great difference.
    Great mention of Ralfy malt mates!

    Ralfy is the man, and so cool you guys gave him this shoutout! I really like the way you guys make us, the viewers, a part of the show, instead of just clicks.. you should end with this: may he who knows know, and may he who mooch mooch, and if either one tries to outdo the other, may he hang on the other mans noose... basically, stay unique 😉

    I just worked out how much i used to drink in units per week. I'm at 157 units per week and have been for the last 20 years. I have no kidney or liver damage and have done some pretty dumb things including downing a litre of whiskey in under a minute (Which i seriously don't recommend to anyone who wishes to live.) and just had a long sleep and woke feeling as dry as a pharaoh's sock yet one night my brother drank 6 shots in 1 night and was bringing up blood. Even at the age of 10 the same brother gave me a pint of vodka i drank it and felt fine. I am not a big guy, how come i am in good health and that same amount of drinking probably would kill most people, is there such thing as an alcohol gene. Or a resistance built up over years of drinking. I would say drinking fine whiskey has helped me drop my alcohol consumption drastically (cheers) because of actually appreciating subtlety and so much to explore. ( Please to anyone who reads this do not drink like i have you will do your self damage. Or if you already do quality is better than quantity and may help you reduce how much you drink.)
    In afterthoughts this version of the cheers is for major alcoholics.
    If you fight, may you fight the urge to pick up a bottle as soon as you wake.
    If you steal, may you steal some recovery time.
    If you drink, don't drink as much as me, because i'm bonkers. lol

    thanks.

  • @tdolan500
    @tdolan500 7 років тому +2

    The official UK advice printed on the bottle says do not regularly exceed 3-4 units a day. I would agree with that, any more that 2 or 3 whiskys a day seems a little excessive to me .To be quite frank however since I've discovered your channel I've drank way to much lol
    In my defence from December to May I didn't have a drink at all (for no reason) so I have to make up for lost time.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +1

      Whiskey Vault I just worked it out for a bottle of bulleit borbon 45% it's 700ml and it says it's 31.5 uk units per bottle, that's 22.2ml. That's a miserable pour...... that would probably make Rex cry.

    BOOM! Numero uno. So I know you guys are seasoned vets, but do you ever find it difficult to taste multiple whiskies in a row, especially with multiple video shootings? Does it make it more challenging to decipher nuances or does it enhance the flavors? Also, do you guys believe in "palate cleansing" at a tasting, and do you have food/drinks you recommend for that purpose?

    • @FightStealDrink
      @FightStealDrink 7 років тому

      It absolutely makes it trickier for me. Sometimes back to back tastings don't make much of a difference. Sometimes the previous whiskey makes it really hard to find the nuances in the whiskey you're holding. (assuming there are nuances to find). Sometimes a previous whiskey will uncover flavors that you've never experienced in the whiskey you're holding. Like a Bellechin tasting that uncovered lots of butterscotch in Caol Ila. But after you've spent about 10 minutes with 1 whiskey, the effects of the previous whiskey are a distant memory, so its not that big of a deal. That's one reason (beyond moochyness) why I try to get Daniel to pour the whiskey early in an episode. I like the idea of palate cleansing, but haven't find anything that i feel strongly about.

    So I do have to say that was a strange experience. My girlfriend and I watching the video like we usually do. The whole time I am trying to figure out where I can get a hold of the Craigellachie and we hear my name. Lots of laughing and what the fucks being thrown around. After watching youtube and other services for so long I forget these things are interactive hahaha. Cheers guys!
    Side note i got my hands on some Ardbeg 10 and it was Fantastic! It came with two small bottles of Uigeadail and Corryvreckan. Have not tried the Uigeadail but the corryvrecken was tasty but a bit much.

    So .... I know these are some older bits but as far as I'm concerned and know. The worm tub condenser are exactly for the opposite. LESS contact on the copper and faster going from Vapor to Liquid. Vapor has more surface. And in combination with the quite short fermentation, shape of the still and angle of the line arm you clearly want to create something heavier and meaty. Cheers love your reviews.

    I always thought a standard drink was like 1.50 oz of 80 proof booze. When you say the top 5-10% heavy drinkers consume 70 drinks, are you talking the 25 ml drinks which you mentioned (which is like 0.8 ounces)? That would be like a 1.75 liter bottle (which I thought was about 40 drinks). I know a guy that goes through about a couple of those a week.

  • @TheBioethicist

    I used to work in the mental health/substance use disorder world, and to go from like the 50th percentile to the 75th, to 90th, to 95th for alcohol consumption is like an exponential curve. They actually brag about force-aging with wood chips under pressure (hours instead of years). Not a straight whiskey. I've tried them a few times and it tastes ok when they pour you a free sample at the store, you're thirsty and tired after work, but it's really not worth the price imho.

    Thank you two for making such amazing videos. I am just starting out on my whiskey journey with Henry McKenna 10 and Buffalo Trace on the bourbon side. My question is how do you recommend building the ability to break down whiskeys into flavors and notes in both taste and smell? The most I can get from McKenna 10 is vanilla and all that comes to mind with Buffalo Trace is a saucepan filled with sawdust and brown sugar on low heat. Odd imagery but that's what I get. I can't get to anything that isn't mentally associated with "warm". Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому

      The fact that you can say "sawdust and brown sugar on low heat" is a definite sign that you're in the right path. Being willing to verbalize the random patterns and memories that your right brain presents to you when smelling and tasting is a big part of it.
      Drinking and thinking about it is basically the only way forward. Just takes building patterns and historical recognition. It can help if you use a tasting sheet to allow your brain to check itslef against words.
      Drinking something and thinking "what's in here" is almost impossible until you've been doing it for awhile. Much easier to look at a list, pick a word, and ask your brain "yes or no" questions.
      I like this sheet: whiskeysmiths.com/whisky-deductive-tasting/

Pretty much all good choices and I wouldn't of bought half of them if you guys didn't recommend them. A non-whiskey question. Just got done watching all the Daniel music videos and noticed in the credits a Rex person. I was wondering if this could be the same Rex we know and love as a Master Mooch? What made me think it is the same person is the camera angle for the videos was shot from a very high point of view and Rex is always saying how short Daniel, so I thought Rex may have been holding the camera :D

    i just picked up a bottle of high west double rye, and it smells strong of sulfur (rotten eggs.) it is a brand new bottle i just opened and now i dont know if i should try it. there are floaties at the bottom of the bottle also. Ive never had high west but im pretty sure it shouldnt smell like that, and it shouldnt have things floating in the bottle. Have you ever had this happen in whiskey? The smell literally makes me gag.

    • @FightStealDrink

      Sometimes some little bits of cork can end up floating in the bottle, but it should never smell like that. I think something is wrong in there.

      Rex ya i contacted high west havent recieved a reply yet. The floaties dont look like cork and they sit at the bottom. More like a white, fuzzy looking substance. Sucks that this was my first experience with high west, now im skeptical to try it again.

    Hey Guys - massive fan since I saw you on Modern Rogue. Never been a massive Whisky drinker (or spirits for that matter), but have been involved in the craft beer scene for a long time (stouts and sours being my preference). Had an unopened bottle of Laphroaig in the cupboard and cracked it open after watching a couple of your vids, and liked it so much I went and got myself a bottle of Lagavulin and Hibiki. Looking to expand my whisky horizons into the Irish, Speyside and Highland scene now. Thinking Green Spot, Dalmore and Glenfarclas given your recommendations. Wondering if you guys are fans of craft beer? Rex, you're a sexy man, but those shirts... damn. Daniel, say whisky for me again... it sounds so f**kn sexy.

    Looking for something different for my own whisky vault. Considering picking up an Irish whiskey (Green Spot or Red Breast) or Ardbeg: Uigeadail. Possibly something both sherried and peated. I like the idea of something rich and peaty. Could you fine gentlemen recommend anything?
    My own Whisky vault:
    Oban 14
    Glenfarclas 12
    Lagavulin 16
    Aberlour 12
    Glenmorangie 12 Quinta Ruban
    Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky
    Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select
    Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
    Woodford Reserve Bourbon

    I'd love to take a trip to Scotland and tour distilleries, but I wouldn't even know where to start. Any tips on a Scotland tour? (I know this is a huge open ended question. I don't have any favorite Scotch preferences to narrow down my interests really. I've mostly had the popular Glens)

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +1

      You can spend a year doing just this. But if you're doing it for the first time, focus on two things. Distillery and bar experience. For a kickass bar experience, fly in and out of Edinburgh so you can visit places like the Scotch Whisky Society.
      for your first trip to distilleries head for Speyside. There are more distilleries per square kilometer there than anywhere in the world.

    How big of a taste difference is the Macallen rare cask compared to the 12,15,18? I went to a bar this weekend and they had it for $85 for 2oz.

    • @seangalloway4179
      @seangalloway4179 7 років тому

      I have to be honest. I am a Macallan fan, but was seriously disappointed in the value of the Rare Cask. Personally the 15 is a favorite of mine. Also, I find Edition 1 & 2 are far superior limited releases that are only $100-$120 depending on your location. Rare Cask is nice, but not near worth the price IMO. Really recommend Edition 1!

    Ralfy, the Malty Mr. Rogers. That's hilarious! BTW, since you changed the channel name you need a new profile picture and banner for the page. I think a pic of the vault would be good for the banner. Maybe you can get creative on the picture.
    I do have a question today. Do you have any examples of single grain scotch in the vault? And can you recommend some? I know it's a thing but honestly can't remember ever seeing one in stores. Seems like they're prob used mostly for blends and not that widely available. I'd like to try one though.

    Aye our guidelines in the UK are silly. a 25 ml dram is one unit and you are allowed 14 per week. I'm Scottish and thus have a Scottish dram at 35 ml, which is 1.4 units, and hence I'm 'allowed' 10 drams a week. Yet the French and Japanese drink and smoke more than us, and they live till their eighties and nineties.

    Today, re-watching this... (said in the voice of 'Ren':) "you EEEdiots!" Ralfy doesn't live in Scotland. That pretty well proves you don't really watch his videos. He lives on the Isle of Man. No! Really! He lives on the Isle of Man, and his "Bothy" is located at his family's house there.
    Ralfy doesn't give out the actual location of his Bothy, or his family's house because I told him not to. I told him "don't tell people where you live" and he agrees, it's too dangerous.
    "Manx Bothy..." where is the land of Manx? It's the Isle of Man, as Ralfy says "somewhere in the middle of the Irish Sea." Yes, the Isle of Man is in the middle of the Irish Sea.
    Cheers!
