  • This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into PV diagrams. It explains how to calculate the work done by a gas for an isobaric process, isochoric process, isothermal process, and an adiabatic process. It also explains how to calculate work done for a cyclic process. This video explains how to calculate the work performed by the gas given pressure and volume values in units of Pa and m^3 as well as atm and L. The first problem explains how to calculate work done during an isobaric expansion and the second problem discusses the work done for an isochoric compression. This thermodynamics video tutorial contains many examples and practice problems.

    In problem 6 at around 12:00 I think the answer is wrong. Not sure if someone mentioned that before. "A gas is compressed from 0.01 m^3 to 0.10 m^3" But point A is at 0.10 and point B is that 0.01, but it should be the other way around

    In fact, at 13:50, instead of trying to find of n value from the PV = nRT formula, you could just have put the P.V to the place of nRT on the W = n.R.T.ln[Vf/Vo] . if you had put PV to the place of nRT in the work formula, it would have been W = P . V . ln [Vf/Vo] . That formula would give same result for the work, and would be less effortless.

      "Less effortless" as in "more work"? Lol
      These diagrams show while we can have a clear understanding of work done and heat transferred, we still need to account for time and sequence. Is there no graphical method of showing the rate of energy flow?

    So, when we find the work done of an isobaric process, either the pressure and volume units are in (atm-L) or (Pa-m^3), right?

    • @carultch
      @carultch Рік тому

      That's correct. The units of Pascal-meters^3 is equivalent to Joules. Liter-atmospheres would require a conversion factor to get what we usually consider an energy unit.

    During the isochoric process, when pressure is decreased from 4 atm to 2 atm, why is the volume of the gas not increased according to Boyle's law? I mean, how is this process done physically?

  • @laurencromwell9601
    @laurencromwell9601 6 років тому +3

    This may be that Im wrong, but shouldn't the overall work be negative? because fro A->D volume is decreasing and it was the smaller area under the curve. If the volume is decreasing that means that the environment is doing work on the system so Work is (+). But for B->C the volume is increasing- meaning the system is doing work on the environment in order to expand. If the system is doing work then work is leaving the system making Work (-). Because B->C has a bigger area under the curve the total work should be negative. I think you missed that because W=-PDV but you wrote W=PDV. If i'm wrong then just forget what I said haha

    • @de-grafthazard9081
      @de-grafthazard9081 5 років тому

      I actually agree Lauren. I had the same confusion so I'm thinking he used different conventions for the signs maybe...Maybe he considered work done by the system as positive. So we actually have to reverse his conventions to get ours
