Now we need a Mad Minute of Mae.
Bravo
Or a minute of Mad Mae?
"war were declared"? nice to find out that Mae is also a Futurama fan.
Mae is awesome! Always love seeing a MoM notification!
Simp
The best battle rifle of the war. A Mauser might do better on the range, but a shorter length, twice the ammunition, and a quicker bolt matter more in reality.
Funnily enough, the mechanical accuracy standards for the Lee Enfield family were higher than those for Mausers (at least in German service) for the entire service life of the weapons. Bloke on the Range has a video that goes into detail about it.
Best bolt action battle rifle ever made, imo. The Brits correctly realized, more than anyone else at the time, that getting as much reasonably accurate lead downrange as possible, at medium range, was more important in the warfare of the day than slower, long range, more accurate fire. So they designed a rifle that excelled at the former. 25-30 shots per min., including reloading, was absolutely achievable and no other contemporary platform could match that. There are reports from German infantrymen in WWI who thought they were under machine gun fire, but it was just British Empire troops and their SMLE's!
@@hux2000 Lee’s American rifles had many of the features you’re giving the Brits credit for before they even had one to play with. In some ways, they arguably made the design worse. The Remington-Lees were designed from the start to be fed by interchangeable box magazines. The Brits deleted that feature to save money and then had to awkwardly cludge a clip guide on when they realized their mistake.
Hmm. I think I'd have a[n early WW2 German or Belgian] 'Mouser' closely followed by the P14/P17 thirdly the 'Smellie'. Yes 10 round capacity is great but for no other reason than you have the choice - if you have the opportunity to load 10 - but can still stuff in 5 if you don't.
And less recoil 👌🏻😎
Consistently the best minute on the internet. Thanks, Mae. You're the best.
That's the first rifle I ever fired that was bigger than a .22. I was probably around 8 years-old. I think every farm and ranch in Canada had either one of those hanging on the wall, or a variant, or a Winchester Model 1894 chambered in 30-30. Like many ranches, we had both. WW 1 and 2 vets, and Korean War vets brought the L-E's home with them after the wars. The Winchesters were just a great deer rifle, so they were very popular. I still use one for black-tails on Vancouver Island.
There's a famous L-E nicknamed "Rosalie" if anyone wants to Google it. It was decorated with trench art by a Canadian soldier.
The most important feature is something you didn't mention. The ability to cock, fire and reload whilst maintaining a site picture and not removing the head.
It may not be a star, but still a fine rifle.
Smooth
I still remember the bruised shoulder after being pushed down the bank by the recoil of each shot, then having to crawl back up to the firing position... I was only 14 and it was great fun to be in the Army Cadets
I own one. Made in Australia in 1917. The only thing missing is the magazine cutoff. Shoots great. 106 years old. Great video Mae. 👍😀
I was literally just about to comment about this, and here it is: the long awaited MkIII! Cheers!
Thanks for reminding me to rescue mine from the back of the safe and take her to the range! ❤
My Dream rifle finally get’s its own video. Thanks Mae 👍

Othais moment.
There was an account during the Korean war when a 3-man British outpost at night discovered North Korean/Chinese infiltrators coming thought their position. While one of them called it in, the other two engaged the enemy. These two Brits shot so fast with their bolt-action SMLE's that the British officer on the other end of the radio call thought they were shooting the infiltrators with a machine gun.
Do you mean an Australian unit? Or maybe Indian? The Brits wouldn’t have been using SMLEs by then, they had already moved on to No 4s.
This same story has been told since WWI..So I'm more than skeptical that it's true during Korea when the machine gun and semi auto rifles were common place.
@@CollinKillianThe British Army didn't start fielding the SLR till 1956, up to that point? They still had the Lee Enfield.
Luv the Smelly
Simple as
The Smelly 3 is a wonderful thing. I love the ugly underbite muzzle.
Best Bolt Action Rifle Ever Made. 🇬🇧
Great video love the content keep em coming
I wonder how many times the bolt on this fine old warehorse has been worked? The quickest bolt gun ever made.
Magazine cutoff and Volley sights, very nice!
I love the quote of quotes on your channel! War Were Declared!
I kinda wish that guy would show up with one of his extremely back-handed compliments again LOL.
😂 I can't help it. Everytime Mae swings that days firearm up towards the camera in the 'full frontal' shot - i duck!
M1917 may be the best rifle of WWI but to me the classy SMLE MKIII is the damned coolest and most unique. Also had the distinction of serving as the rifle of the "Old Contemptibles" BEF class of 1914.
a great minute.
The what now?
This episode should be called Mad Minute of Mae!
I get the reference!
0:55 "war were declared" lmao futurama reference!
Years ago I had a No. 4 Mk II
The variety of ammo choices was a bit limited. But I loved that rifle.
I paid $95 for it at a pawn shop. Wound up needing money and sold it cheap a few years later. Big mistake. Wish I still had it.
As usual, excellent
These are great.
The Enfield is a damn homely gun but it's a favorite of mine for its many great features. The Brit 303 isn't my favorite cartridge but it will do. The 2 piece stock is a stupid idea. The action is smooth as silk; the sights are very good and the thing's as gentle as a kitten on the range.
Everything the British make is homely, it's the firearm equivalent of a possum farm.
James Bond couldn't find anything domestic with a shred of class, hence the Beretta and the Walther.
@@Letyourcolorsblendwithmine you gotta admit some of the British cars are sexy as hell
How does the saying go? " If you're going hunting, use the Mauser, if you're going target shooting grab the Springfield, but if you're going to war bring the Enfield.
Hello. Like the video.
Excellent
The British used a technique called the ‘mad minute’. The way it works is that you have your thumb and index finger on the bolt and the pull the trigger with you middle finger. Because the bolt was so well designed, it was super easy to flick it back and forth, and even the Germans thought that the brits were using some sort of low firing machine gun!
And her original bayonet isn't a knife as much as it's a small sword. Fitted, she's less of a spear and more of a jousting lance!. Good heck, the Tommies could have stabbed the Germans without leaving their own trenches!
Per the rules of my Cnrsenal drinkinh game, that's one shot for 'war were declared' and another for Mae saying it.
My favorite bolt action rifle ever....
Canada’s Arctic Rangers finally retired the Enfield in 2018 so that’s over a century of service for one rifle.
Best on the defence.
Never got around to getting one of these when they were cheap :(
Does this mark Mae's first "war were declared"?
...
When I heard that I almost expected to see it cut to the usual war footage. 😛
I hope to see the Japanese Type 92 Heavy MG on here one day it deserves a shoutout
Mad minute at Mons made guns think they were facing machine guns. Good job Mae😅
Good Video
Uno de lo más hermoso fusil que se construyo!!!.
You could probably sell stickers of a guy with a beard and wearing a odd hat saying that phrase.
Lots of armies used that rifle but the main ones was Britain were it organitly came from and my home country Australia
I really want one of these, maybe one day I can afford it.
subtle futurama reference
Didn’t know it featured a magazine cut-off
My favorite bolt action
Nice Futurama reference.
A rifle that can hold 10 rounds and is very accurate.
10 rounds yes, but not as accurate as you think. Accurate enough for ww1 ranges though.
@@smackarel7The SMLE was winning trophies at Bisley in the 1960s. It only went out of use when the ammo changed from.303 to 7.62 in the 1970s. A man with a SMLE even won the Sovereigns prize in the mid 60s and that involves ranges of 1000 yards with iron sights.

"Accuracy" is subjective
@@stuartburton1167Thats not a plain old wartime SMLE though. The action is that of a Lee Enfield yes, but it has a much heavier and free floating match grade barrel assembled by expert custom gunsmith. The passing accuracy score required for a Lee Enfield No.4 was only around 4 MOA, even that of the WWII sniper version (No.4T) was just 2.5 MOA. That was also a function of their ammunition, which was produced much less precisely compared to modern match grade ones.
Current target/sniper rifles pretty much have to shoot below 1 MOA.
.......war were declared! 😊
Nice. Do you have "l alidade" , the second sightng system in the left side ?
Old adage regarding the bolt service rifles
"The Germans built a rifle for hunting.
The Americans built a rifle for target shooting.
The British built a rifle for WAR."
Do y'all have lee metfords? Or y'all already have it and it's just me not seeing em yet
May!
💯💫👍!2A!
Its amazingbthat all the commonwealth nations that came together, awful as it was, never had a problem with the mk3. Reliable, accurate & easy to maintain.
I was just looking on Gunbroker. Good luck getting a rifle like this for less than US $1000. I would love to have one though.
You didn't look very hard then. Plenty under 1000 or even under 700.
An SMLE in general or one specifically with volley sights and magazine cutoff? Getting an SMLE in general under 1k is pretty easy. I wouldn’t even recommend paying more than like 800 for one
I’m lucky to inherit one bought from at least 30 years ago :(
@@TenaciousTrilobiteA Mark III Lee Enfield SMLE.
Gunbroker can be iffy I can find good stuff at good prices. But there is a lot of overpricing on fine to bad quality stuff
I want one
Whoot whoot
"So you mean we get a new service rifle?" "Yes. Unless of course war were declared." "What does that Ferdinand guy dying mean?" "... War were declared."
Love seeing an unexpected Futurama reference
Imagine the SMLE, bros.
Our current rifle is not so popular as the old Enfields
ahhh me great grand-daddies rifle!
Of course, being English; this must be the best rifle ever
Only a Hun would disagree.
Hush, Lindybeige. The adults are talking.
English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx, Cornish - everyone in the British Isles can at least agree on one thing, and it's that the Lee Enfield is a magnificent battle rifle.
One of my all time favorite rifles!
Theres our girl...😍😍😍
Best gun in the world at least for me
👍👍👍
Not a mad minute😅
Nice! I have one of those; rescued from a house fire.
0:23 What does the *charger bridge* do?
It allows the use of stripper clips to quickly load five rounds at a time. You place the base of the clip in it. While not as fast as a magazine change, it was the long-time solution to carrying ammunition and loading bolt-action military rifles.
@@brianwatkins2974 , hmm. And what's the difference from, for insurance, Mauser 98k? 🤔
The Mauser uses stripper clips as well. Like most bolt-action military rifles, it had a five-round magazine. The SMLE was the only one (that I know of), with the ability to hold two stripper-clips worth of rounds. C&Rsenal has excellent videos that go into detail on all of these rifles and on all of the work that went into developing the bolt-action.
It bridges the charge. Or it charges the bridge?
It's on the frame of the rifle, just to rear of the opening into the action. It's called a bridge because it extends across that opening. Charger is the British term for a device to load cartridges. It functions like a slot into which you insert the base of the clip. That holds everything in place for your thumb to push the five rounds into the magazine.
Replacing with what again?
P13
Anyone here from Hell Let Loose and Verdun?
Please can I have it if you don't like it? Cuz... I want one.
Ah yes. The British bolt action rifle that the Germans mistakenly took for machine gun fire back during WW1.
Thoroughly enjoyable, as always, Ah, the SMLE almost became a victim of preparing for the last major war. When the Boers whip their asses with '95 Mausers in 7mm, gt a cannon in something close to 7mm Rem Magnum instead of training the troops how to actually hit the broadside of the barn.
Yay Enfield. Now do a No.4.
Never action the bolt of the SMLE using the palm of your hand. You will find the action and consequently the rate of fire will be smoother and faster if you grip the bolt lever between your thumb and your forefinger. This is how the military were trained to do it, and how I was trained. You also use your thumb to action the safety catch lever, working across the rifle grip. The entire purpose of these practices is to ensure your hand is never too far from firing the nest round in a combat situation.
As for being nose heavy, it is true that a fully stocked rifle is that way, but if the front sight guard is removed, along with the wood back to the first shoulder sling ring, you will find you have the sweetest, most well balanced sporting rifle you could ever want.
By removing the nosecap, you removed the plunger that dampens barrel vibrations and made your rifle less accurate
Не пойму старая сьемка? Мэй прям молоденькая -молоденькая!😘
Mae; one thing that did not come with your rifle was the sergeant to bite your head off for operating the bolt with an open hand! Close your fist!
I'm surprised you took it off your shoulder to work the bolt.
And I believe it may be more accurate to describe this as a No1 Mk111 SMLE.
Mae rarely shoots from the shoulder for these demos, since she's not going for speedy cycling. Bringing it down allows the other guys to watch the action, make sure the Casing ejects undamaged, etc etc.
That came about around 1920. Before it was Rifle Mk 1No 3. It just is OK!! A British thing!😀
@51WCDodge I thought about that since it still had the magazine cut-off. I couldn't remember when it was gotten rid of. 👍🇦🇺
@@nebiyuesayas5600Perfectly reasonable, though I wasn't expecting her to do any rapid-fire.
I just thought it was appropriate since not a lot of bolt-action Battle Rifles allowed it.
Is there any footage anywhere of Mae doing The Mad Minute?👍🇦🇺
The SMLE didn’t become “Rifle No 1” until the interwar period. The original wartime designation was SMLE Mk III

The best rifle of WW1!
Eh, debatable. Carcano is arguably the best from a big picture perspective. M1917 has much better sights. RSC being semi-auto is also a strong argument
@@TenaciousTrilobite in the mud of northern France, I'll take the fast firing 10 shot SMLE against those.. but you've got me reading up on the Carcano again.!
Holland and Holland is the exception that proves the rule, everything British that goes bang looks like absolute scrap.
Marry me
Quit bring the rifle down to your hip to reload between every shot please.
They do that for behind-the-scenes safety reasons. I don’t get the impression they have any plans to change it
