The SKS has basically become the modern Canadian 30-30 for over 30 years now. There was a time when the Winchester model 94 30-30 was replaced by the Lee Enfield .303 British and the Lee Enfield replaced by the SKS 7.62x39. The SKS was so cheap even 20 years ago that guys bought them by the crate. They’ve become the bang around super tough pickup truck gun of Canada. We even have Canadian companies making plenty of accessories for them. You should check them out Mae.

Used to be you could get 20rd Chicom mag boxes for them for ~$10 iirc? Of course, doubling the glacial reload time from the extremely clunky stripper clips [fwiw, I've never gotten my skS to feed smoothly in one stroke; it's always been "push three, push three, push two, push two" to get the darn things thru the clip & into the box] is pretty pointless, so I don't think they ever sold in great numbers. And I certainly couldn't get one here behind the Granola Curtain after our over 10-rd mag ban went into effect 20 years ago...

The SKS is to me the premier hunting rifle too, as all you need to do in Florida is to simply remove the bayonet (you can keep the lug!), and boom a legal and highly effective rifle for practically every type of game in FL. I also seem to have lots of luck with specialty ammo too, as I use TulAmmo softpoints for hunting and no hangups!

The mini before Ruger made the mini. Congress had to ban their ammo to make the mini-14 competitive.

Honestly i'd love one of your full length episodes on the SKS or any newer WWII weapon for that matter. I've binged virtually all of the WWI Primers and go back and revisit my favorites every couple of days. But only having a very few of the types of firearms used in WWI myself I have a far greater collection of WWII weapons. And while the WWII weapons are covered to great volume here in UA-cam nobody covers the history and development of individual firearms quite as well as you guys do. Especially including all countries and variants involved.

I bought mine in '87' for $143 dollars from a gun shop in town. Came in a box with a canvas bandolier, green plastic oil can and the bayonet is the 'pig sticker' type which is great to use as a mono-pod. Brought it home after stopping at the local video store and it took the whole movie of Cheech & Chongs 'Nice Dreams' to clean all the cosmoline off (funny how you remember shit like that). One of the best shooting guns I have!

Great video, the SKS is one of my all time favorites :) Little side note though, the SKS certainly wan't secondary to the Chinese! The Type 56 carbine was the most common rifle of the Peoples Liberation Army quite a while.

The "Minute of" format is brilliant and I personally would love to follow YOUR channel doing this with virtually any and every gun, service, non-service and especially reviewing all the modern and commercially available guns. although there are lots of channels that review new guns they're in love with the sound of their own voice, run on forever and lack a the consistent, concise and informative format you've developed. Thank you for doing this. And if people have a problem with C&R arsenal branching past WW1 .. like I said.. please just start a new brand for 'minute of Mae' and go with literally anything and everything that strikes your fancy to shoot. (also , you're absolutely right about the SKS.. never thought of it that way before but as the last stripper clip fed service rifle there is a LOT of lineage that makes this 'last of the old breed, first of the new')
