    When I was 9 years old, I wanted a BB gun for Christmas, but my Mom said "NO" because kids get hurt with them. Christmas morning, I unwrapped a long bundle and found a 1903-A3. We went out that afternoon and I shot it until I got a bloody shoulder. (Maybe 100 rounds) I am 71 now and still have it.

    The Smith Corona version of the 1903 Springfield had a peep sight in the rear with other changes for mass production. Despite all the M1 Garand rifles and M1 Carbines, the need for bolt action rifles for all the services including the Navy and Coast Guard required the Springfield 1903 rifle go back into production. All the 2.2 MILLION M1917 Enfields were also used up in WW2 for Lend Lease or for American troops in North Africa like the rear area artillery troops and others.
    Often times it doesn't matter if you have the latest semiautomatic rifle. However, in mass mobilization having a good solid bolt action rifle for training, guard duty, rear area service and for shore parties for the Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard is perfectly adequate as long as a few submachine guns and other automatic weapons are available per squad or platoon. This leaves the more modern semiautomatic rifles for frontline infantry soldiers. We often forget the enormous numbers of rifles the Navy, Coast Guard and rear area Army service forces and Army Air Forces troops needed to defend themselves against any variety of enemy threats or tasks.

      @@stevekaczynski3793 I was actually refering to what is in all those quonset huts on bases. Appears to be enough square footage to store everything the DOD ever made. Minus some surplused items.

      Sorry, but apart from some museum pieces, or ceremonial rifles, those things are long gone.

    Great video! Looks like you are shooting a lower serial number gun, I think it is in the 800,000 range, do you think the concern about barrel/receiver integrity of the low serial number guns is warranted?

    M 1903A3 Springfield had a front sight blade guard. 🤔

    • @TenaciousTrilobite
      @TenaciousTrilobite Рік тому +2

      That is a front sight protector meant to prevent damage during storage and transport. It was not meant to be left of the rifle when firing.

      The problem is that it wasn’t measured very clearly or consistently at the time and there is really no good way to measure it today.
      Every gun they do for the show is at least 100 years old. All of the correct military ammo has degraded to the point that it no longer gives an accurate idea of what the accuracy was. None of the equipment to manufacture new ammo to exact original spec exists. Even if an equivalent load could be made and they found a pristine rifle, it would still only be a sample size of one.
      Default expectation for service rifles of that era is about 3-5 MOA.
