Please make a comparison between Ibanez az and that's charvel, especially compare the neck feel
Yes.....woohoo....Ibanez AZ vs. Charvel Pro Mod DK 24.....A and B shootout
...now I just need to go play both myself
I played them both in a guitar store once (both HSS), so I'll just leave my (subjective) experience here.
The Ibanez has a (much) beefier neck, that was too much for me. The Ibanez did have more of a 'classic' sound and more tonal options, but the Charvel played better (very very subjective) and sounded a bit more modern I suppose. Both didn't really have it for me, but I play metal so don't listen to me. :-)
Best advice is to play them yourself, that's the only way to know if it will work for you.
Maybe you should check it out yourself
arif miftachul we can’t listen to what Phil says about neck feel lmao you have to feel it yourself
Easy. If you can´t afford a Prestige AZ, buy the Charvel. The Premium AZ´s have Basswood bodies wich (unless you play djent stuff exclusively) you should stay far away from.
Just a note to let you know that I really loved the Pickup Configuration Graphics. I usually look to try to see but this makes it so much easier to follow along while being able to pay more attention to what you are doing. Nice job, as always!
'Roasted maple' - sounds so good it make my mouth water.
And yet its not my cup of tea I love the look but I dont like the feel :)
It actually smells wonderful too! I have an unfinished roasted maple neck from warmoth and it smelled like maple syrup for the first few weeks.
That bridge pickup sounds wonderful.
I purchased one in pink, loved it so much I turned around and bought the orange one with the different pickup combination. I think these guitars are truly amazing! The bang for your buck is outstanding and they play beautiful!
Man, I did NOT have a clue how intense the effect of the pot on the tone of the guitar is. That vid was very informative, thank you sir!
Phil, after seeing Anderton's review them earlier this year I had to have one. The perfect superstrat
Oh man split bridge and middle sound amazing
More than a thousand likes. Can't wait to see the A/B comp! 🤘🏼
I played this guitar, I would say one of my favorites and if I had the money I would get it immediately. The neck is superb. I would love to have this guitar with the Brian May switching system. I would do for both humbuckers push-pull to coil split and one 3 way switch for each pickup --> off-parallel-series and another one for in-phase-out-of-phase. That would make a lot of different sounds. I hope this comments gets a lot of likes and Phillip would do a Sharpen My AXE on this one.
I fully agree Army Green is now the official color for that guitar. Gotta have it. 🤘
Or Olive Drab Green if you want to be exact...
@@MrTomengle Absolutely Odie (O.D.) Green
My Suhr Classic S Antique is going to be here Thursday so this unboxing helps to tide me over til then 😍
I just ordered the HH version with the coil tap in the blue matte finish and I'm so excited.
hell yeah, that's the very one I've had my eyes on. Love the blue matte.
I can't decide between this and the HH. From what I hear, the HH has great tonal range too.
My favorite feature of this guitar is the cable plug placement on the back of the body!
I've been eyeing on these Charvel models for some time now. They are cool looking and I would love to own them some day.
Trying to play when I can ... but always don't. Your playing has way improved over the last couple of years ... and is inspiring. Still giving it hell when I can.
I love the high end, beautiful guitar.
I have the Orange Crush version and it's great. Sounds great, feels great, looks great, these guitars are killer value for money. It's funny though, the features I didn't care about at all when I bought it, the Bournes low friction volume pot and the no-load tone control are some of the most useful. I'm going to find it hard to do without them if I ever find a replacement fusion/shred style guitar.
Just bought a Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH and can't get over the quality of this guitar. its near perfect.
Liked the video before it even started... thank you for the great content
Bought the same guitar. Great lead guitar option, because the frets are big, and got a nice contour on the neck joint that makes it super comfortable in the upper register, and it's just got some cutting tones.
I've noticed there are 2 different ones, like them both. Thanks for the vid Phil!
I don't know if it's just the amp, the guitar or both but man that tone is KILLER!!!!!
That clean tone with the funk riff was very good
I love mine! Best guitar I've owned so far.
I have the 2020 Charvel DK24 purple sunset HSS with floyd rose. 10/10 for the price. Flawless build quality, sounds excellent even unplugged , serious sustain and such an addictive neck profile. Cant put it down!
I usually don't like solid colored guitars, but being an Army vet as well....wow, I love that color!
About the black dots on the maple necks you mentioned, there was a video I think it was that fluff guy, he bought glowon that goes on gun sights and dabbed it on the black dots and they glow in the dark and make them easy to see its really cool.
I was hesitant to get a black dot one but I'm using that trick now
Might try that. They are really hard to see on my roasted neck tele
@@gobigrey9352 they sell it on amazon its pretty cheap considering how much you get
The new music on the intro is cool man.
AMS has good closeouts from time to time. I got my kramer pacer vintage metal flake green for real cheap during close out. I like that OD green charvel
A couple of years back I had an idea to build a rear routed Tele type guitar, with a Maple neck, and colour matched headstock (or refin a Fender/Squier Tele) in Olive Drab with white knobs. Nice to know it would be as beautiful as I thought it would be. I love your Charvelle. Such a gorgeous guitar. They should have painted the exposed wood behind the backplate white as well.
I like your shirt that reads.”know your gear!” Congrats for getting a nice charvel guitar, it sounds nice. ✌️
As always Super Cool Review and Demo Phil
I really dig the fact that Charvel & Jackson are both still being made. The more brands we have to choose from the greater the chance of finding "The One" is. Least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Great video Phil!
That neck looks huge! I'm sold! A R M Y Green!!
I have the same guitar. I love it ! Once I played it had to have it.
Sounds great Phil.
between this and the premium Ibanez AZs, i can't think of many other guitars to buy for a "modern" style guitar player who wants a budget guitar that will gig and last forever. This DK24 seems very much inspired by the Charvel Guthrie Govan signature model (2 point trem with no locking nut, HSH with i think the same switching options as the Guthrie Govan, and a roasted maple neck). i'm very tempted to find one to compliment by AZ224
Phil unboxing for breakfast. It’s gonna be a good day.
I have the HH version. An absolute dream to play. Only criticism I have is that even when coils are split, it doesn't sound quite as dynamic and popping as a real fender strat. But it's still fantastic.
That guitar looks awesome!
I Love Both Intro Songs !
I'd love to see this guitar in a tele shape too, like suhr modern T. However, I'd love to see a comparison with a Sterling jp 150; they have a roasted neck now!
Love everything about thst guitar except the midfle pickup. But still a killer machine
I would’ve loved a left version with a floyd instead of my san Dimas pro mod in black. Absolutely love the color. Woulda gone with black pickups and knobs though!
They have kept the licensing agreement in place in case they sell off that part of the company, great guitar congrats Phillip.sound fab
I bought 2 of these from AMS together. One Green and Orange. Had them 2 days and sent them back. I chose them specifically because of the roasted neck for the fact that the necks will be more stable. I humidify properly but still have had issues with other guitars. I ended up sending them back for one reason. They will NOT stay in tune well at all. Because they don't have staggered tuners, it is an issue. The tree makes things worse imo. I almost kept them because they were exactly what I wanted but I wasn't about to pony up for a new set of tuners and replace the nut. For a guitar that tops 1k these issues should have been addressed. I did return them and got 2 dk 24's with floyds, Satin Black. These roasted Charvels almost had it all. AMS is a great company, I have been buying for years and years.
Awesome Charvel!
looks great sounds sweet !
Both AMS and ZZSounds offers payment plans like that. Pretty handy for getting gear fast.
They are, I'm fairly certain, the same company. I use them almost exclusively now. They are really great to work with.
I just wish they carried Hughes & Kettner, because I'm really wanting a Black Spirit amp.
@Pedro Kantor Good advice. I limit myself to 5% of my available cash balance on guitar and amp purchases. The other 95% I keep available for investments that can actually earn me coin and ultimately pay for the guitars and amps.
I like how you put up the Tagima Jet Blues =]
Ibanez AZ would be a great comparison.
Ibanez since I am a Ibanez guy thanks Phil cheers from KC MO !!
This is a bit like the Japanese Charvel CX series from 1991-1993 a simple guitar with an awesome neck. Though with 24 frets, a maple fretboard, a better bridge and better pickups.
Great guitar I love my new charvel
Looks and sounds a lot like my mid 90’s Jackson Stealth HX Professional. Just yours has the single coil center pick-up and mine has 3 Humbucker (for some reason, the bridge pick up is where the action is, clean or dirty) and also I have no trem, strings go through the body like many of the older Charvels I’ve seen. The neck is stupid thin also, I was intrigued by that so I bough it, like 2001 and still have it. Not my main player but I still like it because it feels so different from my other stuff.
They seemed to be all over the map with neck thickness on the Jacksons, even on the same model and similar years. Most are thin and some are VERY thin.
Sounds great.
Phil, what guitar is that right behind your right shoulder in this video? Orange strat type guitar, it looks awesome!
Compare it to the harley benton fusion hsh... great video. Its great that you showed the pickup config while playing. Every tester should do that. 👍
EXTRA points for the Victorinox!!!
Nice Vid Phil! Is there a Pre Amp on board the guitar?
I have the HSS in Primer Grey and I love that neck. It plays easier than my Suhr Modern. The only downside, if any, is the slanted input jack and the nickel frets
@@lueysixty-six7300 As a SG owner, I can say that the jack takes some getting used to.
Long time Fender hater [ of their neck radius and pickups ] here. Tried the guitar just because it was new stock in the local store, so I had to try it. The color was a slate grey [ super slight touch of blue ] , normally I wouldn't want a solid black or grey painted guitar yet the color is very appealing. Picked it up and immediately the neck felt like it was made for me. Tried it thorough a Boss Nextone and bought the guitar .
Thanks for the review! I was contemplating buying the orange hsh version the day you posted this!! I had a glue failure in my acoustic Ibanez alt 30 gc pro plan gave me my cash back! " well in the form of GC gift card! $318 I traded my charvel desolation ds one and the $318 for it open box I got it for $699! Thanks for video as it was one of my final factors in decision! I would like to see companies to a similar jackson dnky or an 80s version of the same style 80s model maybe could involve the Tone King!
As a guy who loves strats Ithink this might be my go to humbucker guitar.
If you love strats (like I do) the Ibanez AZ would actually feel more familiar, especially the neck (the Ibanez has a profile similar to an American Elite, while the Charvel has more of a thin D profile)
I’m new to tha channel,I didn’t know CHARVEL did Roasted necks crazy!Thought they only made them in the U.S. thank you!
I’ve been looking at this exact one, or the Jackson DK2 with the ash body that I’d put Jeff Loomis Blackouts in, I’m still not sure which lol.
🤘🏻5:32 . Do matte finishes get spots or marks on them from the oils on your skin? Can you wipe it down like a gloss finish?
That's a nice guitar. Still torn on roasted maple. Used to my tinted maple and lightly tinted necks.
Charvel DK24 is an awesome guitar.
They should have named that guitar the 4077. :-)
Great comment, not many know what it refers to.... ;-)
I call mine Col. Potter.
I would have gone with Hot Lips but that works too. LOL!
Thought about it.
You could get the pink one and name it "Cpl Klinger". :-)
that guitar looks killer.
Cool guitar love the color
Loved it
Hey Phil, thanks for this video. Could you please tell something regarding the neck profile of this guitar in comparison to that of the Pro Mod San Dimas and the old Jackson Dinky Pro? I mean, could you please delve a bit more onto that? Thanks in advance!
The bridge pickup sounded really good to me, but the other positions not so much; although, the neck pickup was ok. Do they make this with a one pickup configuration in the bridge?
What is the guitar above your left shoulder? Blue with P-90's.
Why is the graphic for the pickup configuration for position 4 at 7:00 completely different than the ones at 3:44 and 4:19? I didn't find any push/pull pot info for this guitar.
Thanks for the vid Phil! Been gassing for one of these for a while now...The fact that there a few new H-H versions just came out, doesn’t make it easier...
Really interested to know how they compare to an Ibanez AZ or something similar.
On a personal note, I’m a big fan of older MIJ Ibanez RG550’s. The thing is that these days guitars from ‘cheap labourer countries’ (really sorry for lack of a better term) are so incredibly well made, that I have trouble comparing them to older guitars made in more ‘traditional’ countries (again, sorry for the terminology).
So in other words: how does this guitar compare to for instance a MIJ Ibanez RG550 from the 00’s?
Really curious for your opinion!!
Maybe an idea for another video: ‘I have some older guitars that are pretty good, when do I know it’s time to buy something new?’ Used guitars that at the time would cost you a lot of money, are they still worth it second hand compared to all the new stuff out there?
I accidentally bought a Charvel Desolation DC-1 a few years ago and I don't play any of my other 5 six string electrics any more. I went into a guitar store because I was about to start building a guitar and I wanted inspiration for an unusual but not outlandish body shape, and I saw it and wondered how it felt because it looked cool. I picked it up plugged it into a Marshall, started playing, and after about 45 seconds I called my wife to apologize for the fact that I was about to spend all of our money. It's the only time in my life that I have bought something when going into a store with no intention of buying anything, and it was absolutely worth it.
Excellent review! Love the pickup combinations, very much to my taste. I’ve already violated my new year’s resolution to not buy any guitars this year four times (2 Guilds & 2 EVHs),so what’s another indiscretion?😉👍
100% the thing that is keeping me from adding one of these to my wall is the no-stainless steel frets with the baked maple neck. Seems like receipe for a repair issue down the road. What does replacing frets on a baked maple fretboard look like? I love the way they play though, it was a hard decision to leave it. Oddly I think I like the Pink HSS more than the Green HSH, though just slightly. I liked this a lot better than all of the AZ's I played (maybe those weren'tsetup well not sure), but the Charvels were much more to my liking.
In your experience Phillip, how do pro mods differ from their custom shop counterparts in terms of quality?
sweet guiatr love the army green
I don’t like thin necks, but I like this one, didn’t find it that thin, especially when the jumbo frets are taken into acct.. Also, the clean sounds out of this “shred” guitar are terrific. I have the orange crush version
Nice guitar. Thanks.
This is the ultimate superstrat IMO
Once I had this guitar. Feels great and sounds way better than other same price range guitars.. but only one thing, it didn't stay in tune when I used whammy bar.. I did literally everything like taking strings out from the trees, putting nut sauce etc.. so had to return it..
SUch a good guitar!!! I love mine.
I have been considering one of these... Your thoughts on the Full Shred pickups?
Long Reply. I'm Blues and Rock mainly and long long time SG / LP owner. Have the SSL6 SSL6 Full Shred version of the Charvel model. SD all the way. The guitar has good bass and mids out of the box in my amp. The highs are strong but easy to control. Both picked parts and chords are clear. Mostly I prefer lower gain pickups and was very surprised and pleased with this pup. The FS is a medium output pup - has some output but it doesn't break up when I turn it up like the SD WLH or the DMZ 36 Ann or my rig. It is balanced enough to play whole songs with only the bridge. As set up, it is a good tone match for bass to treble with the single coils, and switching to bridge alone, it is easily twice as strong as the single coils. The FS works well with the single coils when switching thorough the coil combinations. I really, really hate Fenders and have never owned one - hate the smaller radius necks - this is a 12 - 16 radius and don't care much for tremolos or Fender single coil sounds. Saw the guitar, the slate grey version, and tried it. Fell in love with it immediately and bought it. Have had the guitar several months now, and can say that it is a comfortable guitar that covers both the single coil and rock stuff nicely. Yes, this comes w/o gig bag or case. So, the dealer included a SKS case as part of the purchase.
I love the army green and white pickups. Looks like a jeep. But I was in the navy and the jeeps were battleship grey and white. Like the green better. Awesome guitar
Bought several guitars through AMS using their payment plans. Good way to purchase in my opinion.
Did you have any trouble with AMS? I read a lot of negative things about them which has made me hesitant to go through with a payment plan with them.
@@kitten-whisperer No troubles so far!
I've used both AMS and Zzounds (same company IIRC) and have had zero issues with them. I have had two returns of guitars that I didn't connect with, and they had no problem with taking them back. I really dig their payment plans, as well.
and when you max your limit there, head on over to zzounds for another easy $3k to $5,500 depending what you buy.
Ranger Green. Gotta love it
So, after watching this vid, I decided I wanted an olive drab guitar (former USMC). But, in my travels on the interwebs, I found an EVH 5150 series also in olive drab. Any thoughts on comparison between the two? I know it sounds like I'm just going for cosmetics, but I'll never get the two of these in the same room...
I owned one of these and they are great for the money but I couldn't keep mine in tune. I even had another guitar with the same bridge and it stayed in tune well so it wasn't user error. Maybe I had a bad nut slot on mine.
The roasted neck and pickups make this guitars imo but I love the pickup switch options and wish more guitar companies would wire like that more often instead of the middle pickup alone, Charvel goes two twangy Tele tones with the Strat tone and Humbucker tones like LPs. 3 guitars in one.
Great demo brother. 👍
Possibly needs more bells 😂😂😂
Missing you dude.
Phil, how is the bridge? Specially compared to the Ibanez AZ, because they are supposed to be the same
how do you like that back input?
Always wondered why Charvel cold make these so close the Strat style without Fender suing them.
+
LOVE where they put the jack!
fender owns charvel
@@EWHITEFLIX That was in the vid, hence my comment.
You gotta do the Ibanez AZ Premium -- it's basically a direct competitor and a lot of people, including myself, often pit those two against each other.
