    • @patfix
      @patfix 5 років тому +9

I played them both in a guitar store once (both HSS), so I'll just leave my (subjective) experience here.
The Ibanez has a (much) beefier neck, that was too much for me. The Ibanez did have more of a 'classic' sound and more tonal options, but the Charvel played better (very very subjective) and sounded a bit more modern I suppose. Both didn't really have it for me, but I play metal so don't listen to me. :-)
Best advice is to play them yourself, that's the only way to know if it will work for you.

Easy. If you can´t afford a Prestige AZ, buy the Charvel. The Premium AZ´s have Basswood bodies wich (unless you play djent stuff exclusively) you should stay far away from.

I played this guitar, I would say one of my favorites and if I had the money I would get it immediately. The neck is superb. I would love to have this guitar with the Brian May switching system. I would do for both humbuckers push-pull to coil split and one 3 way switch for each pickup --> off-parallel-series and another one for in-phase-out-of-phase. That would make a lot of different sounds. I hope this comments gets a lot of likes and Phillip would do a Sharpen My AXE on this one.

I have the Orange Crush version and it's great. Sounds great, feels great, looks great, these guitars are killer value for money. It's funny though, the features I didn't care about at all when I bought it, the Bournes low friction volume pot and the no-load tone control are some of the most useful. I'm going to find it hard to do without them if I ever find a replacement fusion/shred style guitar.

  • @Quietistooquiet

I bought 2 of these from AMS together. One Green and Orange. Had them 2 days and sent them back. I chose them specifically because of the roasted neck for the fact that the necks will be more stable. I humidify properly but still have had issues with other guitars. I ended up sending them back for one reason. They will NOT stay in tune well at all. Because they don't have staggered tuners, it is an issue. The tree makes things worse imo. I almost kept them because they were exactly what I wanted but I wasn't about to pony up for a new set of tuners and replace the nut. For a guitar that tops 1k these issues should have been addressed. I did return them and got 2 dk 24's with floyds, Satin Black. These roasted Charvels almost had it all. AMS is a great company, I have been buying for years and years.

between this and the premium Ibanez AZs, i can't think of many other guitars to buy for a "modern" style guitar player who wants a budget guitar that will gig and last forever. This DK24 seems very much inspired by the Charvel Guthrie Govan signature model (2 point trem with no locking nut, HSH with i think the same switching options as the Guthrie Govan, and a roasted maple neck). i'm very tempted to find one to compliment by AZ224

Long time Fender hater [ of their neck radius and pickups ] here. Tried the guitar just because it was new stock in the local store, so I had to try it. The color was a slate grey [ super slight touch of blue ] , normally I wouldn't want a solid black or grey painted guitar yet the color is very appealing. Picked it up and immediately the neck felt like it was made for me. Tried it thorough a Boss Nextone and bought the guitar .

I accidentally bought a Charvel Desolation DC-1 a few years ago and I don't play any of my other 5 six string electrics any more. I went into a guitar store because I was about to start building a guitar and I wanted inspiration for an unusual but not outlandish body shape, and I saw it and wondered how it felt because it looked cool. I picked it up plugged it into a Marshall, started playing, and after about 45 seconds I called my wife to apologize for the fact that I was about to spend all of our money. It's the only time in my life that I have bought something when going into a store with no intention of buying anything, and it was absolutely worth it.

  • @ZelosPhotizo

100% the thing that is keeping me from adding one of these to my wall is the no-stainless steel frets with the baked maple neck. Seems like receipe for a repair issue down the road. What does replacing frets on a baked maple fretboard look like? I love the way they play though, it was a hard decision to leave it. Oddly I think I like the Pink HSS more than the Green HSH, though just slightly. I liked this a lot better than all of the AZ's I played (maybe those weren'tsetup well not sure), but the Charvels were much more to my liking.

This is basically a Mexico made version of the Guthrie Govan without the Floyd and stainless frets, and the pickups are similar but not exact.
I’ve had a couple of the govans but they had tuning issues any time you really used the trem. The nut wasn’t cut right. QC issue, but also the tremolo-no could bind.
More stuff to go wrong basically.
The gotoh 510 trem is great. It’s so simple and reliable. I’ve got one on my suhr, which really this guitars combo of woods and the trem originated with John suhr, and of course, Guthrie went to charvel.
Only thing it’s really missing is stainless steel frets. Otherwise I think it’s a really great guitar!! That’s my fav color too! Not a fan of the bright white pickup cover, but that’s a small gripe for such a great guitar.
Love the roasted maple because it’s rock solid and doesn’t require much truss rod adjustment to keep the action low!

Looks and sounds a lot like my mid 90’s Jackson Stealth HX Professional. Just yours has the single coil center pick-up and mine has 3 Humbucker (for some reason, the bridge pick up is where the action is, clean or dirty) and also I have no trem, strings go through the body like many of the older Charvels I’ve seen. The neck is stupid thin also, I was intrigued by that so I bough it, like 2001 and still have it. Not my main player but I still like it because it feels so different from my other stuff.
They seemed to be all over the map with neck thickness on the Jacksons, even on the same model and similar years. Most are thin and some are VERY thin.

Thanks for the review! I was contemplating buying the orange hsh version the day you posted this!! I had a glue failure in my acoustic Ibanez alt 30 gc pro plan gave me my cash back! " well in the form of GC gift card! $318 I traded my charvel desolation ds one and the $318 for it open box I got it for $699! Thanks for video as it was one of my final factors in decision! I would like to see companies to a similar jackson dnky or an 80s version of the same style 80s model maybe could involve the Tone King!

I am fine with the Ibanez AZ or the Fender as long as we are comparing similar priced guitars. I know MusicMan has roasted neck guitar, but I believe theirs are all in the $1,800 plus range, so not so proper comp.

The bridge pickup sounded really good to me, but the other positions not so much; although, the neck pickup was ok. Do they make this with a one pickup configuration in the bridge?

I have heard some grumblings online about the guitar going out of tune easily. Is that just probably due to a bad set-up, or what do you guys think? I'm madly in love with the HH Chlorine Burst Model lol

Defiantly needs a good set up.

@@PhillipMcKnight Hey, thanks for replying man! :) I know you're a super busy guy! Love your honest, down to Earth reviews, that unlike most here on UA-cam are just shredding over a lame Metal track lol

Oddly enough, I was shipped the new dk22 from American musical supply without the double boxing. Was more than a little annoyed.

I would’ve loved a left version with a floyd instead of my san Dimas pro mod in black. Absolutely love the color. Woulda gone with black pickups and knobs though!

That's a nice guitar. Still torn on roasted maple. Used to my tinted maple and lightly tinted necks.

Compare it to the harley benton fusion hsh... great video. Its great that you showed the pickup config while playing. Every tester should do that. 👍

I'd actually like to see a comparison with some of the standard go-to guitars - tele, strat, SG, Les Paul, & Ibanez. I have this exact model and one of those tele's that has a humbucker in the bridge - and there isn't a whole lot of difference in the bridge position - I thought the tele would have more treble and twang - but they were about equal in twang while the Charvel had more tone. Also, the middle position was quite similar on both - we won't talk about the tele neck pu - I ran out of usable sounds and the Charvel had 3 more good ones. Only trouble I'm having is the E and B are a little muted open - thinking its either the nut or the neck needs adjusting - any ideas?

I wish Fender’s would an Allen screw to lock in the whammy bar on the Strat. Why haven’t they done this?

I don’t like thin necks, but I like this one, didn’t find it that thin, especially when the jumbo frets are taken into acct.. Also, the clean sounds out of this “shred” guitar are terrific. I have the orange crush version

Thanks for the vid Phil! Been gassing for one of these for a while now...The fact that there a few new H-H versions just came out, doesn’t make it easier...
Really interested to know how they compare to an Ibanez AZ or something similar.
On a personal note, I’m a big fan of older MIJ Ibanez RG550’s. The thing is that these days guitars from ‘cheap labourer countries’ (really sorry for lack of a better term) are so incredibly well made, that I have trouble comparing them to older guitars made in more ‘traditional’ countries (again, sorry for the terminology).
So in other words: how does this guitar compare to for instance a MIJ Ibanez RG550 from the 00’s?
    Really curious for your opinion!!

Maybe an idea for another video: ‘I have some older guitars that are pretty good, when do I know it’s time to buy something new?’ Used guitars that at the time would cost you a lot of money, are they still worth it second hand compared to all the new stuff out there?
