Charvel DK24 2pt HSH or HSS | Which is Best For YOU?

- Since they're very similar it comes down to 2 questions: What music do you prefer to play? What do you prefer the look of? Of the two DK24s seen in this video, the HSH variation in Satin Orange Crush is my favourite to play because I think it sounds better than it's primer grey cousin but also offers the neck humbucker which is best suited to the music I play and write. But sometimes you just can't beat a traditional single-coil neck pickup sound for those glassy cleans and Yngwie Malmsteen hyperspeed licks.

Apologies for the weird lighting in this particular video, it was a very very bright day indeed.
Hey is this guitar discontinued?
@@chadgarber These colours are yes
@@CameronCooper Thanks. I wonder why?
@@CameronCooperWould you be interested if Charvel did a HHH floyd equipped guitar
@@BonJovi1987Fan Not really to honest.
Love the intro! Great rendition of Big Log, enjoyable and detailed review. Charvel is continually killing it with their new models. No wonder you have so many of them by now!
I love that you played "Big Log" always loved that riff man. Such a haunting melody.
I love it when you play the Twang and Clean tone! Sounds like Dimebag for me!
Thanks Cameron you helped me make the decision to go with the HSH! this one sounded awesome and its my first Charvel!
Saving for one of the HSS. Looks perfect for me. Great playing and videos!
Robert Plant's Big Log sounded great!
That’s what she said.
Great Plant song to start out! Nice job, Cam.
I have the HSS is primer gray largely in part because of your vids ! I just prefer the single in the neck.
The grey color is so classy
Thanks for sharing,Loving the way SSH you play.thats really awesome to me.
Cam I just wanna say (from Boston Ma. BTW) that you got me into Charvel guitars! I’m 31 on April 11 2021 and have been playing since I was 12 in 2002 so since then I’ve only played my Les Paul (Tobacco Burst, Gibson Standard Pro) and my fathers Clapton Tellie when he passed in 2004 but besides that that’s all I’ve ever even attempted to play up until late 2019 I wanted to buy a new set up. Guitar, Marshall JMC 800 Lead series Studio and a good distortion pedal. I tried many many guitars and it came down to honestly the Green Bengal Satchel Model Charvel or this PRS I forget what kind but I went with the Satchel model and the pedal I got was the Butthole Burner lmao it’s honestly the best distortion pedal but yeah, you really got me into the Charvel with your videos! Btw I seen you on stage with the Panther! So awesome bud! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
You’re one of the best guitar player’s I have seen. So , congratulations, and for the amazing channel. 😎👍🤘🙏
Can't wait for the charvel so cal style 2 to arrive. I hope you are getting one to demo!
Damn !! so great to hear that mesmerizing Big Log Intro !!! Both are great but yeah the HSH configuration for that particular guitar seems just a bit better !!
Nice video! There's the Chlorine Burst model which is HH and has a little switch to split the coils which certainly seems to the best of both worlds! I went to try one of these in the Before Times and I fell in love with it, for me they're just effortless to play. I'm a huge Criss Oliva fan and he got me into playing Charvels.
I wish they'd do a DK24 FR with a single humbucker and stainless steel frets.
I use Lucas engine oil conditioner on the nut and it works fantastic for yrs...I'm an auto repair tech and that's all I had on hand....love your flawless playing sometimes intimidating lol...
Nice dude!!!
I love the HSH, your playing is awesome as usual. Jimmy Page and Mick Mars, SWEET!!! 🤘🤘
Charvel's are simply amazing guitars!
Yes!!!!! Thank you for this review!!
Hope you add one of the DK22's to the collection for another variant to compare
That's sir Robbie Blunt in the intro, one of the greatest song Artists ever that helped save Plant's uncertain career. I always, always had and still have the first (Robert Plant) solo records in the car to this day. Robbie Blunt took guitar music to a whole 'nother level just in compositional genius alone not to mention amazing playing and tone. Robbie Blunt is in a league all his own when it comes to melting your heart and blowing your mind even at the same time.
I have to totally agree. I was a very young kid when when I first heard him. My sister said we are going to see Pictures at Eleven. I was like ok, a cool new movie, we went to the theater and was surprised that it was a listening party for the album, I still remember hearing the opening riff to Burning Down Side One. As a kid I loved Pledge Pin because it also had great drumming . I to still listen to this album and Principle of the moment to this day. Robbie was so uniquely talented. Just perfect guitar for those songs.
Cam...you gotta feel sorry for all the people who will never know just how good it makes one feel to rip on an electric guitar....rock on my brother!!!
The orange looks great the neck also seems a bit darker than the grey which looks great. I love the bridge single coil with delay though so I'm still torn. Can't wait for a DK22 review.
I always like a single coil neck position.
What's not to love? Cracking !
A few years ago I would have said HSH but I have to go with HSS. I am finding over time that I prefer a single coil in the neck.
That, from a guy called RGDude, says a lot!
@@lueysixty-six7300 LOL yeah I may need to change my name if this keeps up
Same, I fell in love with that fat sound that I get from the Texas Specials in my strat. I've never liked any neck pickup more than those.
@@doctorsadvocategame I'm a bit disappointed that the neck single coil doesn't sound like a Strat. It's got that hi-fi thing superstrats always seem to do where there's a crystal clarity at the expense of a nice lush, marshmellow-ey Strat tone.
I was hoping I could vjustify buying this and selling my MIM Strat. But it's a different animal. I wonder if you put a Strat neck single coil in it, would it sound right? You'd think so, since the body construction is similar.
Anyone?
@@lueysixty-six7300 they just came out with the dk22 sss. That will be strat for SURE. it whichever pickup you prefer in the neck and you’ll get classic strat tones
i like the green one looks the coolest of them all
Nice cover of Big Log.
Cameron I have the grey one. I ditched the stock Charvel tuners for Sprezel with staggered posts. I don't use the string trees, still lube the nut 😄. Tuning is soild as a rock. Possible future upgrades would be kill switch, brass block, brass machined bolts and neck bolt inserts.
I hate the SD SSL-6 middle... will be switching out with my old Fender middle. Neck is nice though.
i agree, charvel is charvel, not one leaves their factory bad, it's just pick up flavor, other than that, every piece of wood sounds a bit different , so just pick one up and play it, if it sounds like what you want to hear , buy it, they all play about the same
I haven't gotten a DK24 yet, what a shame.
Just playing my yellow Satchel, and god it is phenomenal. #58 from 2018 so I guess it's one of the first ones made.
Hi Cameron, love your videos! Can i ask you something? Do you have any tunning problems with those guitars? THX.
Sounds great. I prefer the HsS. Did you use the THR to record the tones?
Sounds great
You can still get strat clean sounds from a middle single coil, ask John Mayer. It's a tough choice, it really is...but I think I'm HSH. I lean to the side of hard, dirt tones.
?How do you you like where the the input jack is? I haven't played one of the ones with the jack in back like that yet. Some people love it and some dont care for it.
So what does split coil pickups mean as far as wiring vs the regular pickup set up? Thanks for this channel
I love'em all but if I could I would get an HS (yeah 1single in the neck, no middle) with transparent or burst finish, gold hw, and a 22reverse headstock neck. That would be mine.
They have those now but they’re custom shops from what I’ve seen. Also they have ss and sh ones which is odd but still cool
I wish they would bring back the neon San dimas range. They were so cool.
I agree so much ! I didn't get the chance to buy one.
I see some pop up occasionally.
2nd hands, of course.
@@Void921 on reverb.com? I find it hard to even spot one :/
Is those charvel trem system like a fender strats? I think people trying to use em like a floyd which I wonder if they using the locking keys to.
Holy shit what amazing rock tone...wow. Is that the EVH amp you're playing? Sounds insane!
He uses the Yamaha thr amp series
I ordered the HSH last August, and I had a bad experience. I lost my temper lol, and I sent it back when I could not get the set up right, and didn’t have the tools to fix the fret work. I wasn’t feeling like paying for all of it to be fixed, but I liked the way the guitar felt and the sound was great in the spots where it played the right way. I did make a mental note to possibly try it again sometime because of that. I can see that they can be great so maybe I will try again. Great job Cameron!
I find it rare that a guitar comes from the factory perfectly setup. Especially at this price. The Mexico stuff has gotten so much better but the quality control is still hit and miss IMO
At 950$, the problems were not acceptable. It’s okay, I was able to just send it back. I have had to do some work to many new guitars of course over the years. I actually grew to enjoy it, but that time I just couldn’t deal lol. I hope to try one again sometime. They are cool for sure.
@@jasong546 Yeah I actually agree that for the price, it shouldn't come with issues, but unfortunately they can. I'm not knocking the guitars either. I think they are fine for kind of mid level guitars.
Nut lube and Mick Mars riffing makes for a kick ass video. Phenomenal playing as always, my dude.
Cameron great video. Keep the nuts lubed. Cheers James.
Hello Cam! Been a while since I left a comment. I've been watching! But I've been uploading tons of my daily practices ..Its amazing feeling coming from decades of drumming and keyboarding writing music to guitar in 2018. That's, if you remember when I first subbed ! Saw your Pop and you taking questions reminding me of my son and I. Funny I taught him guitar even though I only really knew a couple of major chords etc. Anyway. I agree with HSS. I've and Ibanez hsh s370 2001 that has the stock AHM pups I believe and actually love it and then the cleaner tones and blues the LTD MH-103QM horizon has the alnico stock Middle and Neck pups that I am planning to buy some more wherever I can to put in some strats. Heheheheh. Be well my young friend and you and my son are amazing players!!!!
Thanks a lot Robert I really appreciate that very much! I have checked out your channel and you have uploaded some great videos, you should definitely keep posting more. It would be really cool to check out your son's playing too. :)
@@CameronCooper I have one of him playing the cheap tele. I'll paste it
@@CameronCooper Here he is ! On the cheapest guitar I had just bought the tele. He only played a few seconds. And the boss Gt1 was on a heavy patch of delays but I'm sure you'll see hes a shredder. HahHH
Thank you so much for this!ua-cam.com/video/POV0KfWjbu8/v-deo.html
My son ua-cam.com/video/POV0KfWjbu8/v-deo.html
My 2006 S470 still plays and sounds fantastically, of course, and I don't even like Wizard necks. The ZR ball bearing trem will outlast me and I did fix the bar bearing issue through Ibanez as well as replaced a neck cracked at the usual top by the nut bolts. I have never even thought of changing the Infinity HsH pickups for "real" DiMarzios or whatever.
I've yet to try a Charvel, so I don't know if I'll like the neck, but I wish they wouldn't recess for the trem.
Big Log!
Hi Cameron, after tons of research, I am going to purchase the HSS version in Shell Pink as my first guitar to learn on. Do you have any amp recommendations for me? I’m looking for something as versatile as the guitar. I saw some demos of the 5150 iconic that were interesting. A friend told me to look into the Spark. Help!
Thank you! Get the Yamaha THR30II amp, thank me later.
@@CameronCooper Thank you, Cameron! I’ll check it out.
I'm such an Elixir fan...
Dude, what was the tune you were playing from 5:14-5:23? I LOVE that
4:00...we knew you looked young...12 years old...this proves it!! haha.
You're only jealous because he has got hair on the top of his head haha :o)
I hate that I ever picked up an HSS Strat recently. I was perfectly happy playing my single H guitars. Maybe HH. THEN THE HM STRAT RUINED IT FOR ME!
I used to think single coils would never be for me, and now I love them. I am having my Meteora routed for a single middle coil. Hoping that will handle business for me.
What is your gear? Sounds so faboulous!
Very cool !!! Yup
I like the silver color
hey man what make and model is that pink guitar on your wall?
Will you be doing an in depth video on the Yamaha THR II 30W?
Yes
how can we have an opinion for a clean tone with this high saturated sound ? :) ok you prefer big disto
What kind of lubricant are using for the nut? (In all seriousness) I think this will help my tuning tremendously
WD40
Awesome sound bro. What was the song you first played at the beginning of the video. I'm having a brain fart.
Robert Plant - Big Log
HSS bridge 90 percent of the time but that single in the neck for cleans.
Hi! Weird question but do you know if a set of fender vintage noiseless would fit this axe?
They're the same size I don't see why they wouldn't
The middle pick Up and the Bridge one are the same in both guitars? The only diference IS the neck pick Up?thanks!!
That's correct
DAMN SON!!!! CHOPS FOR DAYYYYYYSSSS!
+++ for Robert Plant reference - you know your stuff
Hi Cameron, may I ask what gauge strings you use?
Elixir Strings Optiwebs 09-42
5:26 - 5:56 WOW 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Can the HSS do crunchy blues well? This is the only thing I'm still on the fence about. Thanks
It can yes.
@@CameronCooper looks like I found my next purchase 😄
@@CameronCooper also, is the neck pickup lively, or would u recommend switching it for a more raw pickup?
@@Koolb-wn4er I would describe it as lively, it's a custom flat strat so it responds like a traditional stratocaster
@@CameronCooper nice! Thanks for the responses 👍
It would be cool if Charvel did a hhh configuration with a floyd rose 1000 bridge
Who knows what's around the corner
Hi,
Cameron Cooper.
Do you use wd-40 on nut?
Yes
@@CameronCooper SuperVee has a superb, (white colored paste) lubricant that works Better the dryer it gets. Sounds like very long lasting stuff and of course you can use it on the saddles too, or wherever.
satchel junior!
Are the necks different between the hss and the hsh? You make it sound like the hss neck was lower action or something?
The necks are no different. Just one has a lower action than the other
@@CameronCooper By design or that was just the case of your two particular guitars?
@@CameronCooper Also, does the hsh have some great single coil sounds? Does it have coil splitting as well?
@@chadgarber They're literally the same guitars except one has a neck humbucker instead. One just happens to have a higher action than the other which I don't mind. The HSH does have good single coil sounds. Since it has 5 way switch, no need for coil taps
5:47 HB Neck
6:48 SC Neck
Ani you, just ordered an hash in natural mahogany
Why not play the same piece for comparison? Got nothing out of this as far as which setup is better
I would take the HSS and replace the neck single-coil with a Duncan "Coolrails" twinblade and install a push-pull on the tone knob to be able to split the bridge humbucker and Coolrails, separately.Andy Timmons has a twinblade in his Ibanez and he still gets all the singlecoil neck toanes, while having no hum and extra output for high gain leads.
P.S. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR NUT LUBED!
SuperVee has a superb, (white colored paste) lubricant that works Better the dryer it gets. Sounds like very long lasting stuff and of course you can use it on the saddles too, or wherever.
I want the orange one in hss D,:
It’s not the nut; it’s the string trees that cause DK24’s to go out of tune. Guthrie’s sig has the same bridge - only difference is he has staggered locking tuners instead of string trees - that’s what you need to keep DK24 in tune.
Guthrie's Charvel has the original Floyd Rose without the fine tuners and sperzel locking tuners
It's the nut not the trees....
How would you describe the Quality of those Charvels ??
Fantastic! 🤘🏻
HSH and the new HH I would be considering :D
My biggest problem with humbucker in the neck is you're putting a naturally darker pickup in a spot that emphasizes the bass frequencies. To me anything above ~10k just sounds like mud, that's why a single coil with more treble just works better. I don't even like dual humbucker for this reason, unless it's mini humbucker or you specifically get a low output humbucker for the neck, like ~6k with no hum that sounds awesome.
Either way, Charvel have the solution for you 😊👍🏻
Or a hot rail, those work too
Please can a lesson on that section you played at 5:12?
ua-cam.com/video/opctSQ5PNZg/v-deo.html
@@CameronCooper thanks cam I cant believe I missed that!
charvel dk 24 dual humbucker is the best
I already have the HSS, hopefully I’m saving money for that HSH someday
Save extra for a Suhr!
Or build your own with pickups and trem system of choice!
@@LemonMeIon cool i will think about it
Cam, have you EVER played a Chapman? If not try and get hold of one and donuts a video pleeeeeease....
At least Chapman offers Stainless frets and better hardware for under $2000, unlike Vigier, but so does Kiesel.
Is the neck thin, or like VERY thin?
Thicker than an ibanez
do the single coils hum real bad?
I have the Charvel ProMod HSS DK24 FR and the single coils don't really hum too much honestly.
The HSS seem to be a great guitar , good price and specs, i'm intersting in the DK22 too.
The only thing that make me hesitate is the color offer, too few and so dreary 😫, i don't understand there choice.
They would have have done better to keep the so cal/san dimas nice colors (deep purple, satins and classics white/blue frost)
NJ or the slime green. Where the hell is the slime green!
I think the pastel colors on the new models look gorgeous, with the roasted maple it looks so classy yet understated.
I lost it at the lubing up my nuts part😂
I want the orange crush but the trem... thanks cam. Im also a daywalker
Better to use Ballistol for nut lube.
the frets are stainless steel?
Nope... nothing to worry about though
@@CameronCooper ty!!...oh, And your vids are great!
So.. Tell me what is the best?
Like I said in the video, they are both the same! It comes down to whether you prefer to have a single coil in the neck or a humbucker.
Do you play Ibanez?
Nope, they're not for me
I love my 2006 S470 but I can get wrist fatigue from prolonged chording due to the combo of a 16" fingerboard radius and ultra thin Wizard II neck , but the stock HsH Infinities are very good and the ball bearing outfitted ZR bridge has no edges to wear out and is super stable, even floating. The first generation Wizard necks had truss rods exploding through the neck backs 'cause they were so thin!
No Floyd, no care! 😜🤘
Name of song? 4:58
Girls Girls Girls Mötley Crüe
Can i have one of your guitar plz
dude just put a tusq nut and you dont have to lube it with wd40 thats crazy and make it into a hardtail by tightening the bridge if you dont use whammy
It is a TUSQ nut. I'm leaving the bridges as they are. I don't mess with stuff
@@CameronCooper i didnt do it my self either because then the action and intonation changes but piece of cake and cheap job for a luthier but maybe you are right better be able to use the whammy also and just tune more often
@@CameronCooper taking my words back guitar doesnt have to be in perfect tune all the time i purchased a hardtail but still like my floating also
