12V Charger Ports - Automotive, Marine and Powerlet Styles Compared

- Here's an overview of a few different style power ports you can use in your vehicle builds. I'll explain the benefits and draw backs of each style and talk about when you may want to use each type in your build. Worthy of Note that the Dometic plug with the red tip will convert from a Standard Cig plug to the Euro style plug by removing the red tip, totally spaced showing that feature in the video. That said I don't think the Dometic plug fits the Powerlet Ports as well as a standard Powerlet Plug.
Note: The links below are my Amazon Affiliate links, I make a small portion each time someone purchases from Amazon using one of my links, at no extra cost to the buyer. I only provide links to items that I personally like and use myself. i use the money to put back into my builds and support making videos/posts. If you prefer not to use my links you can search for the same items directly off Amazon. Thank you for the support!

I recently learned that if you remove that red bit on the end of your fridge plug it will plug into a powerlet jack. I installed powerlet jacks in my vehicles for my fridge as well. Great video!
Great video style. Concise, clear, no fluff. UA-cam needs more of this. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it and found it informative 👍
Don't replace the Dometic plug! Just remove the red plastic piece and boom - you have a Hella standard plug with better connection!
Thanks for the video!
I tried that and the powerlet port on the end of the oem plug didn't seem very secure, the 90 deg plug is rock solid 👍
Thanks that’s given me much food for thought as my existing sockets on our campervan are dreadful. 🇬🇧
Much thanks for this video, was racking my head on amazon with all the options out there and reading reviews before purchasing, all were pretty much crap. Then came to the tube for some actual reviews. Ill definitely be going with you're recommendations.
Great video I am for sure going to switch my fridge over to that powerlet connection!
Beautiful! Love this! Thanks for the share!
Excellent video
Nice overview, thanx!
One bit of criticism if I may: the fact that POWERLET doesn't mean anything to us Europeans given that we had already named such plug/socket, quite some time ago, specificaly MERIT, HELLA, BMW..
Perhaps that was too confusing for the US market?
Also, some Amp rating would have helped to complete the overview, just saying...
ciao!

Great info but still confused. I just installed a marine grade 12v socket in my RV for my 12v Furrion TV. I was using the 12v socket that came with my camper but I wanted one closer to the tv. The 12v tv plug does not work in the marine grade socket. Does not seem to fit properly. Any ideas why?
trying to sort out what plug is in my Bluetti EB70 Europe version... I bought multiple and tried and most of them just jump out again. So looking at your video. Now the one you sit with at 5:30 looks like it, yet... trying the ball bearings are just ready to come out. It sucks... I wonder about the one with greater grippers and red thing... might be worth a try if I can get one of those. But this just utterly sucks.
Do any of these pass through Audio for the speakers of a car?
I can't get my car fridge 12v adapter to lock. Also, the locking outlet I have is too wide for most of the other adapters I've tried and more around. I may tried to wrap a elastic band around the adapter so it fits snugger.
Am hooking up 8 track deck in garage using 12 volt power supply. Tape player has one hot wire. Connect positive on cig. lighter to hot wire and negative to ground wire (case of player)? Thanks rg
You forgot SAE connectors. I use them on motorcycles because I can leave the pigtail for battery tender connected (which is SAE) and I use a USB connector with SAE for charging electronics
I use SAE connectors in certain situations as well, for wall mounted devices I like the versatility of the marine cig ports and Powerlet connectors 👍
Great info - thank you! I gather you don't like Anderson connectors which seem to get all the attention in a lot of forum posts?
They have their place as well but they don't make for a clean permanent install like the Powerlet ports or the Blue Sea units 👍
What is your opinion on the SAE connector? I use them on motorcycles for GPS, heated vest and battery charging. Inside my fwc for fridge and battery charger connecting.
I’ve had issues with the marine grades melting because they don’t have any airflow through the plug.
Interesting. I've never had a single issue with the ones I've ran
hmmmmmmmmmmmm.... I don't know... Kinda... sucks this female plug I have in my bluetti 70EB.... I wonder if one could replace it but... that might be to much tickling around.
The design of this system of plugs and sockets mystifies me on a fundamental level. Surely out of the box such sockets should be compact and secure, and the plugs low profile and right angled as a base-line standard since they are for use inside cramped vehicle cabins in and around cargo etc. Maybe its because they evolved from cigarette lighters, but still, it seems absurd - for example the dometic one ... I take the point that the gasket makes it more secure, but why does the damn thing have to sprout out from the socket some 10cm?
Here's an option you didn't mention. Engel sockets

This plug/socket standars is a failed concept that should have ceased to exist.
