  • Summer’s End CHOW CHOW
    2 heads CABBAGE, chopped
    12 GREEN TOMATOES, chopped
    2 RED BELL PEPPERS, chopped
    2 GREEN BELL PEPPERS, chopped
    2 large YELLOW ONIONS, chopped
    1 to 2 cups JALAPENOS, chopped
    other options can be cucumbers, yellow squash or zucchini
    Place all in a large bowl. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons SALT and toss. cover and refrigerate for a couple of hours to overnight.
    12 cups SUGAR
    12 cups white Vinegar 5%
    8 cups WATER
    4 tablespoons PICKLING SPICE
    1 tablespoon SALT
    1 tablespoon TUMERIC
    2 tablespoons ground dry MUSTARD
    1 tablespoon RED PEPPER FLAKES (optional)
    Place all the above ingredients into a large stock pot and cook on medium high stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Add the chopped vegetables and continue to cook for 1 hour.
    Fill sterilized jars (boiled in water for 10 minutes) with chow chow and juice to 1/4" headspace. Top with lids and twist tops. Allow to seal as they cool. There is no need to can. You can simply store in jars in the refrigerator.

    This video is a blessing!! My grannie would make this every summer with my aunt and we would help chop veggies she would make 80 jars and divide them up between the family. Unfortunately the last made jars were right before she past in 2013 and I held on to them as long as I could and cried when the last jar was used. I have searched and searches and your recipe is the ONE. A true winner in my book and has brought back so many memories. I thank you. Hopefully when my aunt and cousins taste it they will agree.       Her name is GreyC.. because she haves shades of grey and white.. the big C stands for cat.. ☺️ she is very sweet and adorable and loves to watch me cook.. you will sometimes see her walking around in my kitchen when I'm making videos.. as far as the chow chow I plan to try that on salad or in a stew.. and I love the way you cut your onions and made them into a diced onion.. I can't wait to try that and also how you took the middle of those seeded middle part in the bell peppers and removed it. Very remarkable! 🤗

    Omg i used to watch my mama and grandma fix chow chow it was so good with soup beans cornbread.but they are different kinds theirs was made with corn.they didnt like peppers.they also made relish with corn too.it reminds of the good ole days.thats why i love your cooking its just good food.your videos make my days better.hugs.

    I have missed you, Amy! I had somehow missed your last couple of videos. Yay I can watch them now. My family loves loves loves us some Chow Chow. I’m with you, it’s wonderful on peas but it’s good on everything. I’m so happy to have your recipe. I get it. I really like chopping, myself.       So glad you get the chopping thing😅 I get message after message telling me I need a quick food processor and such like I’m unaware😅I use them sometimes but I love to chop.

    I would call it "Olde Worlde Chow Chow." Because it's made from ingredients that have been used centuries back into the Olde Worlde, back in England at a time when even the spelling was different.

    You don't submerge the jars of Chow Chow under water and boil them for 15 minutes like other people do?

      The vinegar has so much acid and the heat. If it seals it is good.

    Aren't you afraid of your hands burning? The other day i deseeded some scotts bonnets and my hands burnt me for days😮‍💨i was making a west Indian pepper bottle with vinegar and oil and onions and bell pepper!those peppers were hot!🥵my neighbor grows them in his garden!

    Great Grandma,Grace Clark,make some good chow,chow,yes with cabbage.zwas manny yrs ago,but how those things live on. That was my childrens ,gr,gr,grand.

    I love when you tell that story how John calls it the GB bowl lol!! We had so much rain this summer up here in Michigan, my poor garden didn’t do too well. I should have used raised beds so I’ll be sure to do that next spring. I love Chow Chow and honestly, a lot of people up here didn’t know about it. Some of the elders do, but I think I knew about it from spending time down there with family before school started up here. Your vegetables look so beautiful 😍 💜💜💜

    Here in Central WV some call it chow chow too, some call it green tomato ketchup! Whatever the name, it's sooo good, especially with a pan of cast iron corn bread!! P.s. we cut wieners or sausage into chunks (like sour kraut and wienies) and fry the chow chow!! Yummyyy p.s.s..... the first time I ever used my jar grabber (I have the same set that you have) I done the exact same thing...took me several jars to figure out I had it up side down!! Bahahaha, glad I wasn't the only one! 😉❤

    You said no need to can, store in refrigerator, hmmm, I don’t have that much space in my refrigerator. So it’s not shelve stable?

    Pick your hot peppers or any peppers an put in a freezer bag an put in the freezer an if you need one go get some out an add to soup or cornbread or anything you cook an you can do pepper jelly in the winter time or when u want some peppers there in the freezer ready for you love chow chow

    A good name for the chow chow since it’s at the end of summer harvest and starting in to winter I would name it “ the end” chow chow. Down where you live are purple Hull peas like pinto beans are where I live?

      @@amyslouisianakitchenwhen I lived in Knoxville in the 80’s my first time eating chow chow I was in love and I’m from the north and never really liked sweet relish but I loved the chow chow a lady shared with me and I asked her what all was in it? She laughed and said everything out of the garden and then she said her mama called it end of the garden chow chow ❤❤❤
