I'm a displaced boy from the maritimes (NS) for the past 44 years out here in BC. Loved my grammie's and mother's chow chow growing up! Have green tomatoes from the garden this year and will be making your recipe... you can take a boy out of the maritimes but you can't take the maritimes out of the boy!!!
Hi Mark so so nice to hear from a fellow maritimer. I know what you mean. Once a maritimer always a maritimer. Our hearts will always be there. Thank you so much for visiting and for your lovely message. I do hope you enjoy this as much as my family and friends do. Blessing and stay well. 🤗
Hi 👋 thank you so very much. That is kind of you to say. I appreciate your time and thanks for commenting. Hope you visit again 🥰 have a beautiful evening
Hey Beautiful Friend!! OMG when I saw that big box of green tomatoes it made me so happy!!! You know how much I love them fried!! but I have never had green tomato Chow!! It looks so delicious and I will definitely be making it when I get my hands on some more green tomatoes!!!
Hi Stacy, nice to meet you thank you for visiting. I appreciate it very much. I’m glad that you like this recipe and thanks for the time that you give me to watch and comment. Hi Neighbour!!! Looks tasty! Never heard of green tomato chow. It must be an Eastern dish. I want to try it! I hope you have an amazing trip back home! Take care! 🙂
Hi Lisa, thank you so very much for checking this out. Yes the Maritimes in Canada this is very popular to have with Sunday suppers ect.. Hope all is well. Harrietta will be back in videos now that she is starting to feel a bit more like herself. She hasn't been feeling well. Hope you have a great week

I bet those are delicious! I don't think I ever had them . I've had fried green tomatoes. Watching you can brings back memories! I'm sure Mel will be so happy to get some👍.
Hi Shelly means a lot you watched cause I am not sure many are liking the canning recipes lol. It’s raining here today hubby and I just left the Walmart and getting a coffee. I hope your day is going well my friend
hey Sis that new microphone you have is amazing such crisp and excellent sound coming through I have tasted Green Tomato pickle and its delicious however i think the way you made yours is a game changer thanks for sharing have a good weekend
Thank you my sweet and dear brother Andrew. I love this with mashed potatoes on Sundays so good. I wish I could bring you over some for you and Mama to try with your Sunday supper
I think it will do good in the long run. Canning is getting popular here in the states with the cost of food. Plus we need to try new things sometimes. That’s why I decided to throw in decorating this week. I probably should have just done the cooking segment, oh well. I still think this video will do well over time.
Hi my sweet friend it has been awhile. Hope all is well with you. I love green tomatoes my neighbor gave me some from her garden and I made fried green tomatoes so good. Thank you for sharing jerri-ellen have a blessed day stay safe and healthy. 🙏❤🙏❤🙏
Hi Jerri-Ellen, Those tomatoes look amazing and I can smell your tasty green tomato chow here. Thank you for sharing your video and recipe. The Mic is a good idea, but be careful with having it to close to your neck it will feedback when moving around. Have a lovely day and keep those recipes coming..... :) Bonita
Hi Bonita, oh wow good point thanks for the advise I should clip it lower from short or something. Thanks for letting me know. I love green tomato chow so much!!! I am thinking I am going to go back to Sunday suppers and just do Sunday suppers and share ideas and recipes for that. I am not sure how well received the canning and stuff is lol. Thanks for the support and kind friendship Bonita
Hi Tory Omgsh this is my absolute favourite canning recipe. We grew up on the stuff. Definitely give it a try. Don’t use white vinegar though use the wine one I did because when people substitute and use white it’s not the same at all. So nice of you to be here thanks for that
Chow is amazing good. First time I had it was when I was about 6 years old at my grandmother's place. It's great stuff! You can use it like a condiment same as you would relish, or you can put some on your plate and use it the same way we use cranberries with our turkey dinners. You won't be disappointed

Hi Makayla 👋 so nice of you to visit. Oh my goodness then you will love these. I grew up in Cape Breton. I’m from Sydney my husband is from new Waterford. I am going to be sharing more recipes from back home as well. Where did you move to if you don’t mind me asking. We live in Ontario now. I still miss home. Have a wonderful day hun.
I was just outside halifax, and like you i moved to ontario. In wasaga beach now. I do MASSIVE outdoor gardening, and this year im planning on greatly expanding what i grow on my postage stamp yard. Each year i grow 3 or 4 tomato plants and get enough to use fresh as they grow plus preserve enough to last almost all through winter. This year im going to try my hand at broccoli, green onions, cucumbers, cauliflower (if i have enough planters to add that to the list of new additions), as well as my standard legumes, and maybe a couple things i forget now. I love growing bush beans, but cant always find the seeds for them, so im crossing my fingers this will be my lucky year.
@@makaylaforbes6719 I love that area ! Wow your garden sounds amazing!! I live near Guelph we were in Georgetown Halton shills now in Centre Wellington .
@@Jerri-ellen I was in Guelph for a short time about 15 years or so back. Liked it there. I'm thinking of moving further north if I move again, but I'm not in a rush. My yard us incredibly small. I mean small to the point that only 4 small cars could fit in the ground space I have. But I've been working on maximizing the use of the space both for growing for long term consumption, and still having space to relax comfortably. Once I get that figured out, I'll likely do a series to post on here to show people how it's possible for almost anyone to knock a chunk off their spending, and food is a massive monthly cost, and that cost only rises. The setup I currently have for growing my tomatoes and jalapenos is tiny, so small it could fit on pretty much any balcony, and eyeballing it, takes up less than 18 square feet. I designed and built the rack I use for growing those 2 items myself, and I'm thinking about building a new one that will accommodate for growing herbs on the same rack without using up any extra space. And son of a gun, as I'm writing this, I just thought of a way to add a way to grow things like strawberries on that rack as well. Maybe next year I'll build it (unless the 6 year old in my head won't let me wait that long). I'm renting right now, and all the electrical running through the property (I'm in a cottage court, so we all have our own cottages in my neighbourhood) is underground, so I wouldn't want to even think of digging the ground up, so everything I grow is above ground in planters. Here's the part that's most shocking where it comes to my vegetable gardening. My front yard is mostly shade, so while some things are shade loving, those things tend to be your leafy green varieties like lettuce and spinach, etc, and as far as I know atm (I'll be investigating further later on) are best fresh, so I grow everything besides my herbs in the space between my cottage and my neighbour's, which CAN'T be more than 120 square feet and I still have room to sit and relax comfortably with company with everything I'm currently planting back there, and will continue to have great use even with what I'm planning to add in this year.
I need to dig out my canning gear. I make a similar pickle called green tomato chutney. I may even record it for a video, but that could be a tough one due to my lack of space and the need for space when canning. Great video as always Jerri!
Hi Pete oh goodness I thought no one was going to be able to relate out side the maritimes in Canada. I was like gee no one will know this chow/ chutney what am I doing lol. Thanks Pete for watching. I love chutney and green tomato may be my favourite! Much love always my friend

Thank you Salayna for watching and for making this comment. I updated just now the recipe to go with what I said in the video. I rather the way I did in the video. Both recipes use to be there one from original and the version that I do and my Mom and Mother in law did. Don’t know why it was deleted so now I have the version in the video there. I can’t thank you enough for asking because it was probably like this for the past month. Ugh.

Hi Ron hi Terry!! Thank you ! We grew up eating this at most Sunday suppers 🤗 I am happy to hear the meds are working. That is a relief!! We are all doing very well on our end. It’s a nice day today so we are doing some outdoor work. I hope you both have a wonderful and relaxing day full of smiles !
Thank you Jerri-ellen for the video and the recipe. I am from Ontario and grew up on PEI. My mother( God rest her soul) used to make that chow. When I saw your video I decided to try my hand at making it as we had lots of green tomatoes left over in the garden. I just finished canning them this morning. I sampled the leftovers and it tasted good. However, I do think it tasted a bit too vinegary. I didn't use wine vinegar, instead, I used all-white vinegar (3.5 cups) I am wondering if that made a difference. If it did I will remember next year to follow your recipe to the letter. Thank-you 👍👍👍
Hi my fellow Canadian and maritime or miss placed lol. I am also in Ontario i grew up on Cape Breton Islas. Sorry about your Mom. We have family in P.E.I. I find the white vinegar a lot stronger than the red wine vinegar and since we need the asset for canning to keep it shelf stable I find that with this recipe using the red wine vinegar, much better substitute for the white vinegar and it does give it to a milder vinegary taste, so yeah, hopefully you will try again next year and I hope that you will still enjoy the fact that you made. I appreciate you so much for taking time out of your day to spend it here and try the recipe and I can’t thank you enough for that. I hope that you have a beautiful week ahead and hope to see you again sometime. 🤗 🇨🇦
Hi Donna 👋 I never tried Graves tomato chow. This is a touch on the sweet side with the brown sugar and all. We love it. Thanks Donna for stopping by and commenting. Are you from the Maritimes ? Hope you have a wonderful day. 🤗
seems like green tomatoes are really getting popular! I totally need to try them, would you believe I never have? I'm really enjoying the canning recipes! I don't do it often but I'd love to do more. Must be so delicious Jerri, enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Hi Anadi you are so kind. Thank you. I have others o pre recorded but not sure if the canning is being well received so I dj t know if I will post. I have a menu plan for dinners I think I will go with lol. Thanks for being my friend
Oh very nice Deb. That’s wonderful. I’m down around Guelph area love Collingwood. I sold some homes up there back in the day. Hope you have a wonderful one and take care.
I used to slice my tomatoes and onions, but I now chop them both into small ( bite size ) pieces….onions cut smaller than the tomato. I love Green tomato chow chow. I sometimes will add a couple of partially ripened tomatoes ( orangey colour) to add a touch of colour. In Alberta they call “chow chow” pickled tomatoes. Danish (?) I was housekeeper companion on a farm , for an elderly lady. She also taught me to make Lazy Daisy Cake, her favourite / now my favourite cake.!🙂
Oh wow that sounds wonderful. I have to thank you so much for stopping by today. This was such a lovely message to read. I thank you so much for your time and I hope that you’re having a wonderful week. Thank you for sharing this info with us and your memories. have a blessed rest of the week and weekend that is full of smiles ahead.
I love your video. It sure brings me back to when my Mum who was from Nova Scotia made Chow. I do have a question: What do you do if you don't have white wine vinegar? Could you replace the amount with apple cider vinegar? thanks
Hi Shirley, so nice to meet you I love this recipe so much and yes, absolutely you can substitute that vinegar for the apple cider vinegar and it will be tasty. Tasty. Thank you so much for stopping by. I love meeting new people and I love reading messages. It brings my heart so much joy I hope to see you again. Have a wonderful Labour Day weekend.
Hi Sonia wave. They are just picked early or is you have some that need to be picked before the frost that didn’t get to ripen. We grew up having this with our Sunday suppers.
Question - have you ever froze it? I don’t plan to can the entire batch and I’m curious if it’s flavour/texture after freezing if anyone knows? Thanks!
Hi Sarah 👋 thank you for stopping by. Yes you can absolutely freeze however it does change the texture. They get softer and more mushier when thawed. Flavour changes a bit but it is still good if you like to freeze some. I hope this helps. Thanks again for visiting and for your question. 🤗
Wonderful! Thank you so much! I made my first large batch today and it is amazing!! So good in fact that I’ve changed my mind and will can it for pantry storage/gifts instead. Thank you for the wonderful recipe and shared knowledge! We are in southern Ontario and had a large amount of tomatoes suffer late blight this year. This will now be our yearly go to for end of season green tomatoes or those needing to be harvested early like in our case. Thanks again! 🇨🇦

Hi thanks for stopping by. This one I don’t t think was from a book. It was shown to me by my mother in-law. She shared with me how to make it. I put the recipe in the description box if you like to try it.

Love this, we have been doing lots of canning too- today making two types of apple butter- hope Mel let’s you in the island 🤣😂🤣😂
Hi Jim thank you my sweet neighbor for visiting. I sure do appreciate it. I need to catch up with you. I hope all is well 🤗
Is this recipe similar to Graves tomato chow? It was more on the sweet side and so delicious.
Hi Donna 👋 I never tried Graves tomato chow. This is a touch on the sweet side with the brown sugar and all. We love it. Thanks Donna for stopping by and commenting. Are you from the Maritimes ? Hope you have a wonderful day. 🤗
I do love your new mic!
Me too loo
seems like green tomatoes are really getting popular!
Great video. You do not need to sterilize anything if you waterbath 10 minutes or more. This saves a lot of time and effort. This is great stuff!!!!!
Oh wow Gisele I didn’t know that. Thank you thank you for watching and commenting. I do appreciate it very much.
Just made 28 pints plus a dish full which I ate lol. Collingwood Ontario🇨🇦
I dice mine. It seems like there are as many chow recipes as cooks, lol.
Let me watch 😋😋
Thank you
So are these tomatoes different or just picked early. This looks so good.
Hi Sonia wave. They are just picked early or is you have some that need to be picked before the frost that didn’t get to ripen. We grew up having this with our Sunday suppers.
Thank you for this. I haven't hunted around but my superstore stopped carrying it 😫 oh well, homemade is best anyway 😊
I do hope you get a chance to make it some day. We love it. Are you from the east coast? Nice to meet you. Nice of you to stop by. 🤗
@@sarahg9619 oh this is wonderful. I am so happy you like. I make and give out for gifts as well lol. My hubby and I grew up in Cape Breton Nova Scotia but we moved to southern Ontario for work years back. Small world. Thank you again for visiting and for this. I am so thrilled. Have a wonderful weekend ahead Sarah 🤗
What book was you getting the recipe from?
Hi thanks for stopping by. This one I don’t t think was from a book. It was shown to me by my mother in-law. She shared with me how to make it. I put the recipe in the description box if you like to try it.

I remember my mom making this stuff, and a whole lot more when I was a kid growing up in British Columbia Canada...didn't realize she had brought it over from Nova Scotia where we lived previously. 🤷♂️ 🤦♂️ 🤯

Do not simmer
for 1.5 hours the tomatoes and onions will be mush.
Hi Thomas I was afraid of the same thing but they really weren’t my usual time I do is an hour but thought I would follow mother in-laws advise and it taste great but you don’t have to simmer that long if you do t like 🤗 thanks for visiting :)
@@Jerri-ellen I think because I used green cherry tomatoes it made it worse, but the onion were mush as well.
@@chester2cows oh wow. Thanks for the feedback and sharing that. It is good to know. I hope the ones next time turn out for you. Thank you Thomas. It’s always nice to hear from neighbours and chat and learn from each other.
