- On a previous video, a user left a comment asking Dave for some ideas on how to get over the fear of scraping his face when slab climbing. Dave thought long and hard about how to answer this question. The result is this video featuring his best tips on how to feel more secure and more confident when stepping on bad holds on climbing on slab problems. It truly is a slab climbing master class. Enjoy!

This is quickly becoming my favourite climbing channel. Really practical tips, with simple explanations and clear demonstration. Thanks so much for this.
Thanks Jeffrey! I really appreciate the compliment and encouragement. If you have any ideas for good tips videos, please let me know! 🙂
Same! I love that the videos are so detailed.
@@microscopicobservations9517 I love that all of my friends here love the details. My wife usually gets a glazed look in her eyes after 20 seconds of me trying to explain something 🙃
This. Hé only gets what hé deserves. Im so glad UA-cam made me discover this
@@boursitocard I appreciate you David 🙏
Great tips! Thank you, David
I wish this channel had more subs, definitely one of the best climbing channels for beginners.
I agree. Best channel for this kind of information, I find it so helpful
Thanks for this really nice comment 😁
We're growing quickly thanks to people like you, so hopefully we can celebrate 10k subs soon 😉
It is newish but will get really big for sure. The advice is so good.
@@billking8843 Thanks Bill!
Loving your videos and all your friendly super helpful advice. More please! Thank you very much.
You're very welcome! I'll make as many helpful videos as I can. It's much easier if people make suggestions on videos they would like to see though (hint hint 😉)
Amazing content. High level tips I haven't seen or heard anywhere else. Watching and liking every video.
Thanks! In my mind the "T" in your name should stand for "Thumbs-up" because that's what I'm giving you! 👍
Great tips, thanks! I've been using your "mental warmups" the last couple of sessions and it has helped me a LOT!
That's sweet! I'm happy to hear they're helping. Thanks for letting me know!
Good stuff! Thank you!
The fear is exactly what I am having troubles now… thanks for the tips! Excellent!

So powerful as always. You give so much quality content my brain overflows once i hit thé gym ! I dont Know where to start With =p.
Just kidding, it is helping a lot. Thank you David !
I appreciate all of these kind comments. They never get old. Thanks David 😊
Hi, I really like your videos in general. The tips is quite easy to understand and follow.
Besides, this is just my personal thought about your videos in general, but I always feel like your videos are a little bit light. I'm not sure if others have the same problem when watching your videos though.
Thanks for the encouraging and helpful feedback! 🙂
When you say the videos are "light," do you mean that the colors are faded because there's too much light shining on me? Certain parts of the gym are very bright, and I too notice that it makes me look a bit whiter than I already am, so perhaps I will need to fix this when I am editing. I'm not an expert at "colour grading" yet though, so please be patient as I learn and improve 🙏
@@climbhangout Yeah, that's what I meant, but it's not quite important now given that your content is really helpful :D
@@HungNguyen-gr2rc I appreciate you and your helpful comments. I like to improve at all areas of video making/UA-cam if I can. I am happy that the tips are helpful though. 👍
omg did not realise how much i needed a friendly goofy canadian climbing instructor... i miss bc :'(
I'm sure BC misses you too Danny. I'm definitely glad that you found this channel though 😀
Nice video, I'll incorporate this to my next practice, although I like slab, very nice tips!. I wondered if you ever had any complications climbing with your ring on, I know my father had his ring cut into his finger on a nasty fall and the finger is only 50% working now.
Good question! I'm really sorry to hear about your father's finger. That's certainly something for all of us ring wearers to keep in mind as a potential risk.
I left my ring on for this video, because I could control the difficulty of the movements. I always take my ring off before any of my actual climbing sessions though.
Normally when you slip on a slopers you are not even expecting it!
I have hit my head, nose and my shins love, slopers. 😂🤣😂
Exactly right! That's why it's nice to have a face/body preservation habit similar to the one I mention. The absolute worst is when you hit things on the way down (or up) that you didn't know were there 😄. I've hit myself in the mouth with a hold because it was in the blind spot created by the mask I had to wear 🤬
Nice tip on pushing off the wall. Seems obvious, but good to point out the mind needs training!
Thanks! You're right. It does seem obvious, but it won't feel obvious if you don't practice 😉
Can someone explain why people don't like slab? It seems to be a theme on a lot of channels.
That's a great question! I myself love slab climbing. When I go to new gyms I always seek out the volume walking problems.
I will admit though that slab can be humbling, because trying harder doesn't seem to directly influence your result. You tend to need to "try better." That takes patience and perseverance... it also doesn't involve taking your shirt off or yelling to "get more power."
Tom (in the background) is definitely a "shirts off" type of climber. Perhaps there's a correlation between UA-cam climbing channel creators and wanting to take one's shirt off and power scream? 🤔
@@climbhangout That is the best answer I didn't have possibly hoped for! Thank you! 😻😂🤣😂🤣
@@malindarayallen Hehehe this is the best response I could have hoped for 🤭
I think because slab can be quite hard for beginners, and it requires more techniques than other types imho. You can't just power through this kind of routes as others. However, I feel more rewarding sending these projects because I know my footwork is on point. Another thing about slab is that the constant fear of slipping off the foothold and planting your face into the wall when you don't focus on your footwork. That's why I usually do these routes when I feel more confident and focused after sending other routes. It's like mind-warmup as explained in the video.
@@HungNguyen-gr2rc That's so helpful. I have good balance coordination and flexibility, so that kind of stuff is a lot easier for me. It kind of feels like really hard walking? Powering through stuff is way harder for me, so I think I gravitate toward slab.
Hey Dave! Good advice. Do you have any do's and don'ts for when climbing in the gym?
Good question 🤔 I definitely do. I will consult some different people in our community and try to create a video on this that is fair and representative of as many different types of users as possible. Hopefully it goes without saying that what I personally consider a positive behaviour may be considered obnoxious to someone else. Either way, look for a video on this in the near future.. 😃
Hi, I just finished filming my response to your question. You should definitely look for it coming out within the next few days 🙂
@@climbhangout already sub'd 😉
@@MicrowaveHateMachine I really appreciate that. I also thought your question was a good one and the answer could help others. 🙂
We got tip 0...don't use rental shoes
That certainly helps!
