BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

Well done to my sister sarah 😊
Great game! Well done 🎉
Also did 839 diff. to Rachel (sort of):
I really like this one cause it uses the board left to right:
75 + 6 = 81
81 x 10 = 810
5 x 6 = 30
810 + 30 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
That is a great comeback, indeed!
A different way of getting 507 for the first one is 8/8=1 100+1=101 101*5=505 50/25=2 and 505+2=507
what r the rules for the game the less equations u use the better?
It doesn’t matter as long as you get the result
@@anuk1311 Get as close to the answer as possible. Use numbers at most once. Only the basic operations of + - / * are allowed.
I did it this way too
@@anuk1311 no judgement on the math, just needs the end result, if same result but different math, they both get the points.
What a comeback!
That was exciting. So happy for her
507
8/8 = 1
100+1 = 101
101*5 = 505
50/25 = 2
505+2 = 507
That's how I did it.
I think Rachel finds more complicated ways to do things to save face for the contestants where she can.
That's how I reached 507.
Same
I got it the same way
The second one is completely in order to solve it a different way.
75+6=81
81x10=810
5x6=30
810+30=840
840-1=839
What the heck happened? How on 839 did they not add the second 6???? They could have been one closer...
My favorite solution for that one uses all the numbers in the order they are on the board: (75+6)*10 + (5*6) -1
@@THT619 I meant why did they not add the second 6 instead of the 5.
@@thermodynamicist because they would still be 3 away, 836 + 6 = 842 thats still 3 away
@@Toto-yu4qh Add the second 6 instead of the 5, not in addition to the 5. It gets them to 837, only 2 away.
@@duckmandrake1859oh i understand now that makes sense
If either of them would have gone for 837 then they'd have been the only one scoring that round and it wouldn't have gone down to the final conundrum.
Weird.
6:50 - 583 using all of the numbers 2, 8, 10, 3, 6, 1 in order as presented:
2 + 8 = 10 * 10 = 100 - 3 = 97 * 6 = 582 + 1 = 583
For the 507 I went
8/8 = 1
100 + 1 = 101
101 * 5 = 505
50/25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507
507:
8/8 = 1
1 + 100 = 101
101 x 5 = 505
50/25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507
Great comeback
🔥🔥🔥🔥
For the 839 you could just take away 5 from 75. Times (6+6)= 840, minus 1
8*6=48
48+2+3=53
10+1=11
53*11=583
for 839 i did
75+6 = 81
81*10 = 810
5*6 = 30
810+30 = 840
840-1 = 839
And if you write it as a single expression, you'll get the numbers in the same order as they are on the board.
2 + 8 = 10 x 10 = 100 - 3 = 97 x 6 = 582 + 1 = 583
583
8x10=80+3=83
6+1=7x83=581+2=583
583 6*8=48+2+3=53 10+1=11*53=583
839:
75 - 5 = 70
6 + 6 = 12
70 * 12 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
75 / 5 = 15
15 * 6 = 90
90 - 6 = 84
84 * 10 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
10 * 6 = 60
75 + 60 + 5 = 140
140 * 6 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
The second one already has the numbers in correct order: (75+6) x 10 + (5x6) - 1
50+25+8=83
83*5=415
415-8=407
407+100=507
100 x 9 = 900
900 - 25 = 875
8 - 6 = 2
875 + 2 = 877
6 + 1 = 7
7 x 8 = 56
56 + 2 = 58
58 x 10 = 580
580 + 3 = 583
8/8 = 1
100 + 1 = 101
101 x 5 = 505
50/25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507
For the final round:
8+2=10
10*10=100
100-3=97
97*6=582
582+1=583
I like this as the numbers are used in the order shown on the.screen. ((2+8)10-3)6+1
You're looking at the numbers?
That 839 was infuriating, they both did +6+5 at the end, when +6+6 would get them two away.
Two from the top please Miss
877=9×100-25-6+8
9 x 100 = 900 - 25 = 875 + 8 - 6 = 877
((8/8)+100)x5= 505. (50/25) = 2. 505 +2 = 507
100. + (8/8) =101
101*5 =505 + (50/25) 507
so weird seeing the real version of this game
(8/8=1)+100 = 101
101×5=505
50/25 = 2
505+2=507
100 + 8 = 108 x 5 = 540 - 8 - 25 = 507
Did my 507 different to Rachel:
8/8 = 1
100 + 1 = 101
101 x 5 = 505
50/25 = 2
505 + 2 =507
507=5×(100+8/8)+50/25
I totally agree, 8f I want to do the numbers game I just go to numbers clock. Same thing but different scoring and you can do it with friends or by yourself
839. 6+6=12 75-5=70*12=840-1=839
839.
75+6=81
81×10=810
6×5=30
810+30-1=839
507. 8:8=1+100=101*5=505. 50:25=2+505=507
+1 swagger point for not needing to use the 10
100 + 8/8 = 101
101 × 5 = 505
50/25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507
On the equation at 5:07 she doesn't use number 75. I'm new to watching this and assumed they have to use all the numbers, but I guess they don't?
They can use all numbers once, but they don't have to use them all. There's no bonus points for how many numbers they use or don't use so...
8 out of 10 cats mastered the firmula for this game.
Always thought that Rachel is one of the most beautiful looking women I've ever seen!
Shame she is a total right wing nut job.
583=(8×(6+1)+2)×10+3
75 - 5 = 70 x (6 + 6) = 840 - 1 = 839. Took embarassingly long.
I went (75+6)x10 = 810. then 5x6-1 for 29, 810+29 = 839. didn't have to jumble them around, was already in that order up on the board.
8 ÷ 8 = 1
1 + 100 = 101
101 × 5 = 505
50 ÷ 25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507 😅
Pretty unsporting and unfair of Colin to heap more pressure onto Tony before the conundrum. Reel off the stats and info afterwards.
Tony is not a magnanimous loser!
How did he surrend the 39 point lead?
Yes he is
I don't get how she got credit for "877 but not written down". That means she didn't have it when Colin asked her opponent after 30 seconds, but figured it out in the extra seconds before she was asked.
Nice way to tell us you don't actually watch the show without telling us you don't watch the show.
Clearly cheating 🤣🤣🤣
@@self-preservationsociety7057even though its allowed?
Usually when they say not written down they're asked first

Is Rachel Reily really a math genius or is she being feed by an earpiece? Because I'm amazed by the non-conventional roads she takes
She has a bachelor in mathematics from Oxford, so I am pretty sure she is pretty good with numbers
@@bazzakrakI went to countdown and sat In the audience in 2016. If there’s one where she says you’ll have to leave it with me, she really does sit there and work it out on a clipboard. The only intervention that happens, is if it’s impossible and she’s told not to bother with it. Otherwise it’s all her work. I had a picture with Rachel afterwards and had a chat with her it literally made my life 😂😂😂😂
With a little practice, it's not hard to get that fast. Just basic arithmetic and learning some common techniques. This basic stuff is far less impressive than any of the math involved in getting her bachelors degree.

Thought so. No matter how good you are, making sure that a target is impossible would take much longer.
man this version is so much more boring than 8 out of 10 cats one lol
What did you expect
It's made for old people
That’s because it’s a different show!!!!!
Countdown came out long before the 8oo10c version.
8 out of 10 Cats is for people without a sense of humour. All a bunch of unfunny fuckers
A scot and a northern irish person, neither of whom can speak english!
You should learn how to write English. Scot, Northern Irish and English should have capitals.
839
75 + 6 = 81
81 * 10 = 810
6*5 = 30
810 + 30 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
That's how I did it too. I was surprised to see it already set up in order!
25-8 = 17 100+8 = 108X5 = 540+17 = 557-50 = 507
25+8 = 33 100-33 = 67 50+5 = 55X8 = 440+67 = 507
6X5 = 30-1 = 29 75+6 = 81X10 = 810+29 = 839
75-5 = 70 6+6 = 12X70 = 840-1 = 839
25+9 = 34 100-6 = 94X75 = 7,050-34 = 7,016÷8 = 877
8-6 = 2 25-2 = 23 100X9 = 900-23 = 877
8X6 = 48+3+2 = 53 10+1 = 11X53 = 583
6+1 = 7X8 = 56+2 = 58X10 = 580+3 = 583
507:
100 + 8 = 108
108 * 5 = 540
540 - 25 - 8 = 507
8 / 8 = 1
100 + 1 = 101
101 * 5 = 505
50 / 25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507
50 + 25 + 8 = 83
83 * 5 = 415
415 + 100 - 8 = 507
In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, and I also had this equivalent solution:
50 + 5 = 55
55 x 8 = 440
440 + 100 = 540
540 - 25 - 8 = 507
And I also had this different solution:
8 / 8 = 1
100 + 1 = 101
101 x 5 = 505
50 / 25 = 2
505 + 2 = 507
In the second round, I saw Rachel's solution and I'm betting her other way was the following:
75 - 5 = 70
6 + 6 = 12
70 x 12 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
But it might have been one of the following two:
75 + 6 = 81
81 x 10 = 810
6 x 5 = 30
810 + 30 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
75 x 6 = 450
450 / 5 = 90
90 - 6 = 84
84 x 10 = 840
840 - 1 = 839
In the third numbers round, I saw Sarah's solution and also had a couple of related alternatives:
100 x 9 = 900
8 x 6 = 48
900 - 48 = 852
852 + 25 = 877
100 + 25 = 125
125 - 6 = 119
119 x 8 = 952
952 - 75 = 877
In the final numbers round, I saw Sarah's solution, but also factored for this solution:
8 x 6 = 48
48 + 3 + 2 = 53
10 + 1 = 11
53 x 11 = 583
And I had this solution:
8 + 2 = 10
10 x 10 = 100
100 - 3 = 97
97 x 6 = 582
582 + 1 = 583
what an insulting git checking 508-I mean the host!
It’s really not. 🙄
