    BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

    SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

Tough day for Peter. He's been very reliable in the numbers games during all of his appearances. Just didn't go his way on this occasion.

    968
First intuition is to attack 966 with the 6, doing so gets you 161, which luckily enough is a multiple of 7, leaving you with 23 to get with 2, 9 and 5. Which you can see by observation.

Got lucky with the last numbers! Getting it within 10-15 seconds:
    9*7*2 = 126
    126-5 = 121
    6+2 = 8
    121*8 = 968
Waited until the end of the video to post this - damn it, Rachel! Getting it exactly the same way 😄

I got it a different way about 20 seconds in and was ecstatic to get my first one without either contestant (during a semi-final!) or Rachel getting it during the initial time:
      9*2=18
      18+5=23
      23*7*6=966
      966+ the other 2 = 968

@@BenWDuffyI'm glad you got that in time! :)
It's been a while since I watched Countdown clips. That's especially due to the fact that, unlike the main audience of this show, I'm not from the 🇬🇧 & mostly come to Countdown for the arithmetic.
So, even though I eventually thought of the exact same solution as you did, it took me way longer than 30 seconds. I wasn't even trying to get it in time with the contestants & was just trying to figure out how to get the target amount on my own.
The weirdest thing is that during my 2nd or 3rd attempt, I already thought of working backwards and moving the new target to a nearby multiple of one of the given quantities. It's just that after dividing 966 ÷ 7 = 138, I just rolled my eyes in annoyance after seeing that the quotient was double a number typically associated with an adult fun-time position (enough exposure to dirty jokes online that I would definitely consider overdone can do that).
I should've realized that since that factor was a multiple of 3, 138 would then be a multiple of 6. That way, I would've immediately noticed that you can make the remaining 23 with the leftover quantities via 9 × 2 + 5 arriving at your solution.
I then tried using 8 × 121 = 968, but somehow wasn't able to figure out how to get 121. The only time I realized your solution was when I went back to 966 and divided it by 6 first to get 161 before dividing by that by 7.
Also, I'm sorry if this rant seems excessively long. I'm autistic & sometimes can't help but ramble on and on about things I enjoy [math being one of those interests!]
