    The Cult is one of the most underrated Bands that came out in the mid-80's.
    The singer has one of the best soulful voices, while the bands blues like Rock blend beautifully.
    Their singer's voice and stage presence is so good, the Doors asked to be their vocalists when they reunited and started touring. His voice blended perfectly with the Doors.
    Sweet Soul Sister, Soul Asylum, Edie, If, New York City, She Sells Sanctuary. Their music is awesome

    The Cult started out as a Goth act in the early 80s and were initially called Southern Death Cult. Alternative CLASSICS "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Love Removal Machine" from the mid-80s still bear their hallmark Goth sound but with a bit more of a Rock approach. This was their biggest hit in the US, but the UK mostly remembers them as pirate-shirt-wearing Goth weirdos. By the time this track came out, they had clearly started to adopt influence from Heavy Metal - Guns n' Roses, especially. Goth and Metal were strange bedfellows for most of the 80s, but this hit (along with offerings form Nine Inch Nails and Ministry) helped merge those worlds so that by the time Marilyn Manson came along, the template for Goth-influenced Metal was well-established. If you like their Rock stuff, the follow-up single "Edie (Ciao Baby)" was their second-biggest US hit and was more of a ballad, but still a scorcher. It was written about Andy Warhol's legendary muse, Edie Sedgwick.
    Fun Fact: People often comment that frontman Ian Astbury looks and sounds a lot like Jim Morrison, the legendary singer from The Doors who died in the early 70s. Well, about 15-20 years ago, he was asked by the remaining members of The Doors to tour and record with them as Morrison's stand-in. How cool it that? I mean, it was kinda lame from a fan's perspective. By the time it happened, both bands were well past their prime. But imagine how cool it would have been for Ian Astbury to be asked by his heroes to fill in for another long-lost hero. From his perspective, it was probably a real career peak.

      The Cult weren’t Southern Death Cult, that was Astburys first band. He left them and poached Billy Duffy from Theatre of Hate and together with Jamie Stewart and Ray Mondo formed Death Cult, then they dropped Death as it was too goth and became The Cult.

    As a massive fan of The Cult I'm thrilled that out of all the bands out there you're covering them. Fire Woman is The Cult at their commercial peak it's far from their best. Also dont look too much into the lyrics, theres a ton of "yayah!" And "baby, baby baby" that probably dont need any further scrutiny!

    • @jimilemons3437
      @jimilemons3437 4 роки тому

      So if they utilize more than ‘A’, ‘C’, & ‘G’ power chords you’re just not having it? No lyrical depth? Have you heard of ‘Howlin Wolf’ or Tennessee Williams? That’s what he’s talking about - Delta Blues and Southern phrasing. Kind of bold I’d say. The musicianship gets better with every album, so do the lyrics, and frankly so do their appearance. It’s ok to like Southern Death Cult and Sonic Temple and Hidden City and so on - I certainly do. But when you say ‘Far from their best’ you clearly can’t be talking about their ability as musicians - because one album could be reproduced by 12 year olds in a garage with 2 weeks of lessons and the other is a multi-layered complex mixture of sounds with much more coherent lyrics. They grew, you don’t like that they strayed from the sound you liked and that’s fine but don’t compare the relative merit of the compositions because it’s not even close.

    • @punkoid76
      @punkoid76 4 роки тому

      Jimi Lemons maybe he thought Love was their peak rather than Electric, as you’re suggesting. I was a huge fan and went to see them live on the Electric and Sonic Temple tours, but I think they lost something after Electric, despite the musicianship. I actually prefer the first draft of Electric, Peace, over Sonic Temple as I think Temple only had a few great songs on it. Soldier Blue, Edie, Fire Woman and maybe Automatic Blues. Ceremony was even worse BUT I do think Wild Hearted Son and Heart Of Soul are great songs, if they’d been on Sonic Temple it would’ve been a much better album. As for kids in a garage being able to replicate Electric, dream on, it worked because it was great musicians playing on it and an awesome front man.

    • @jimilemons3437
      @jimilemons3437 4 роки тому

      punkoid76 I was actually referring to those who think ‘Electric’ was an acceptable departure from ‘Love’ and I hate to break it to you but anyone whose played guitar for six weeks can play ANY lick on Electric - period, end of story. As it relates to the ‘Manor sessions’ which were the original mixes of ‘Electric’, we can agree to disagree, in my view (and I own every one of the three discs that comprise them) they are self-indulgent drivel. The band knew it too and that’s why they let Rick Rubin strip it down to a Gretsch, a Gibson, a bass and a Marshall Amp. My point remains that Love is a great album but it does not have the complexity or lyrical depth of ‘Sonic Temple’. The lyrics are largely abstract and ethereal which sets a great mood but doesn’t tackle much. So don’t blame the Cult for getting better as musicians and songwriters. ‘Love’ is even easier to play than ‘Electric’. ‘Ceremony’ is garbage from beginning to end and both Ian and Billy are on record as it being misguided. Their Eponymous follow up to that was outstanding. As it relates to the songs on Sonic Temple ‘Medicine Train’ should have been a single, New York City has the best riff on the album, and ‘Soul Asylum’ borrows from Kashmir but has a raw intensity. So we will have to agree to disagree as I listen to all three albums - Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple but only the latter do I play with no skips.

    • @punkoid76
      @punkoid76 4 роки тому

      Jimi Lemons I’ve been in bands and was actually a recording artist in the 1990s, I agree the riffs on Electric are simplistic, but the playing of them by Duffy isn’t, it’s a guitar thing whereby it’s easy to imitate stuff but difficult to get it right, it’s all in the touch and feel of the player and getting to the level of the Cult on Electric takes some time, on top of that you have Astbury, very hard to replicate. I do agree that the stuff on Love is easy to play, but again hard to get right. I preferred the manor sessions/peace stuff to Sonic Temple as I think Temple is an attempt at doing what they were doing on the Manor Sessions, but they couldn’t release all those songs again so wrote new ones, with mixed results. I stand by my comments, I even listed to Sonic Temple all the way through yesterday and my opinion hasn’t really changed, a few great songs and some ponderous stuff that isn’t as good. Medicine Train wasn’t on the vinyl I bought in 89, but I agree its one of the better songs from that period. Ceremony was the end for me, like I said two good songs, in fact I still like those two better than most of Sonic Temple.

    • @jimilemons3437
      @jimilemons3437 4 роки тому

      punkoid76 I respect your take, I’d recommend you give everything after Ceremony a listen - they went in some really different directions and Billy Duffy is about 1000 times better than he was in the old days. I love Electric and Live but as a guy who is a 30 year guitar player and someone who has both recorded, produced, and played live I’ll have to agree to disagree on the ‘feel’ required to play on either album, even Billy doesn’t think that. Peace to you though, music is not meant to affect everyone the same.

    Just like the album before it ("Electric"), this album is killer from beginning to ending. LOVE The Cult. "Wake Up Time For Freedom", "Sun King", and "Sweet Soul Sister" are killer tracks. I recommend going back to Electric and also doing "Aphrodisiac Jacket", "Lil' Devil", and "Peace Dog".

    India,
    Seeing how you have enjoyed the Cult, I'm thinking it's time you tried some Sisters of Mercy. Plenty of songs to choose from, but for a top-notch song AND video, you should check out "Dominion/Mother Russia". Both are truly epic (Lord only knows what they spent on the video...)

    Smokestack Lightning is a 1957 song about longing and desire. It captures the essence of yearning for someone or something that seems just out of reach. The “smokestack lightning” metaphorically represents a force that is both captivating and elusive, much like the object of the narrator’s desire.

    I remember when "Fire Woman" debuted on MTV back in 1989. I thought that The Cult were going to be a MAJOR Rock group, because lead singer Ian Astbury sounded like the "second coming" of Jim Morrison. Strangely, that did not turn out to be the case.

    I love these reactions. When people of different cultural backgrounds discover music from different cultural backgrounds. Same as when I opened my perspectives with Bob Marley, NWA, King Sunny Ade, and Kraftwerk. Yes, I am an old fart.
