The sample is from "Ike's Rap 2" by Isaac Hayes. Almost a the time Tricky (related with Massive Attack and Wild Bunch) used too in a total different (amazing) song, "Hell Is 'Round The Corner".
She is definitely gangster.. this is music at its sublime finest.. Portishead are trip hop.. and they are the very best at it. Such an incredible rabbit hole you have just entered. ❤
Portishead is a very industrial town near Bristol on the banks of the river Severn. This tune is best experienced driving across the bridge from Wales into England in the rain with portishead off in the distance.
How tf does trip hop still sound futuristic even though it's 25-30 years old? It's not just one song it's the whole genre that still sounds dope af... how ? 😂😂
You are correct, the original recorded version of this samples Isaac Hayes Ike's Rap. But here it is recreated by live orchestra and instrumentation. Geoff Barrow, Adrian Utley and Beth Gibbons were a magical trio. If you like this maybe try listening to Massive Attack, who were prominent in this Trip Hop genre that was popular in the late 90's in the UK.
Genre is called Trip Hop. It's rare to see someone introduced to Portishead that doesn't like it. Strangers, Mysterons, Sour Times are some next steps. They only have 3 original material CDs, and every song on 1st two are exceptional.
i normally do not care for the drum n bass beat... i like a little more of a solid beat, if know what i mean. but i could listen to trip hop doing it all day. they turn that beat into a soothing machine. :->
I saw Portishead live on this same tour (without the orchestra) at the State Theater in Detroit. Arrived early before the were many people there yet, watched the entire show from front row. Their dynamic range was outstanding from whisper quiet moments that would bloom into swirling crescendos.
Shes Sultry- I think that’s the word you want. Feminine ,sexy with exuding a confidence and strength thats just very cool. The orchestration added to this song ,concert is breathtaking
One of the best in Brit Trip Hop - a genre that has some of the best music in that early era. Try early Morcheeba as well. The one constant is that female vocals lead the way in this genre.
Portishead is one of the most beautiful bands to ever exist. Beth Gibbons' voice is so haunting. They are dark, sexy, sad, creepy, elegant, I dunno... I absolutely love them. My fav from them is "All Mine" but just go on and dive deep into their ethereal magic. So happy to see people reacting to them.
Trip Hop was the soundtrack to my late teens and early 20s Have a look at the record label Unkle. Was an entire culture on its own. Streetware, art & music
I love Portishead! The Dummy album is a masterpiece. And the Live at Roseland, NYC DVD is stunning, to pull off that sh*t live, is astounding. Check out Wandering Star, and Roads, two of my favorite tracks.
Singing with a lit ciggy is gangster AF. I was on this band from the get go, but I never saw them live or even a clip until I came across this from reactors like yourself. Thanks so much Polo.
I second this comment. Dummy is probably my favourite album and still gives me chills every time I listen to it and I've lost count of how many times that is. Perfection!
Thank you to that Patreon! Think I mentioned this along time ago just in the comments but never actually expected it to pop up, so whoever it was.... cheers to you!
Yes to more Trip-Hop! Sadly short lived but brilliant genre with brilliant musicians that combined a lot of influences to create something truly special. Tricky is a good way to go.
Trip Hop was an international movement from Bristol UK to Austria to Japan to San Francisco. A common theme is a heavy focus on the cinematic. The common use of strings, brass stabs and suspense evoking a film noir aspect. It's roots like equally in Film scores, Hip Hop, Dub and Jazz, even Western themes and other exotica. DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Coldcut, Massive Attack etc.. All have commonalities with Roy Budd, Herbie Hancock, Lalo Schifrin, David Axelrod and other film composers.
love portishead. so underrated. if you are liking this, you should check out some massive attack, bjork or sneaker pimps. thank you so much for the amazing reaction. keep on rocking 🤘
if you like that track that much Polo, I thoroughly recommend the album this track came from (Dummy). It also happens to be their debut album & one of the best albums of the '90's.
Oh yes! Here we go! First album Dummy is amazing! Songs featured in the movie “Tank Girl” and a few others. Second album self titled also brilliant. Third album was this just called Third. And has some great songs as well. All mood music. Trance/hop. Full live album recorded in NY. Covers hits from the first two albums. Sound quality a little rough in the recording at times, but still a show I would have love to have seen live! Definitely check out more 🤛😎👍🤟🤙🔥🌳🌬️💨
It's such a shame that over the years the USA has resolutely ignored many truly brilliant band and musicians from the UK. It's heartening that Polo is trying to redress the balance - at least on a personal level.
i used to practice jamming to this record back in '04 when I was learning drums. I lived with the drummer of the band I was playing with at the time and we had a PA set up in our practice room. It's a killer record for groovy drums. TBH, I never cared for their recorded albums years before. This one rips, though.

@PoloMusic27 I think you'd enjoy St Paul and the Broken Bones "Grass is Greener"
@@oskarobitwas about to mention Trickys first album, we were just blown away by that and the Portishead album that summer

Roads from the same Roseland session is pure magic...

and following from that Tricky
@@alphooey Tricky's cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel" in particular
@ Tricky with Martina Topley-Bird was magic.
Very versatile trip-hop band. The track 'Roads' is also very good.

The Third record grew on me in huge way, even if it didn't hit me on first listen. Now I listen to it more than the first two.
@@marksudworth9769 Dude, Machine Gun...🤘
Massive Attack - Angel
One of my faves. You gotta listen to the studio version next.
Back in 96' A and me would put this on repeat and f..k...it was perfect
That scratching of the DJ mixed with the heavy drum n bass beat is what i thinks DEFINES the genre called Trip-Hop... Portishead is a genius at it
Massive Attack invented triphop and they had the fault.
i normally do not care for the drum n bass beat... i like a little more of a solid beat, if know what i mean. but i could listen to trip hop doing it all day. they turn that beat into a soothing machine. :->
This whole concert at Roselawn was epic.
art is famously subjective, but this is one of those performances it’s extremely difficult for me to imagine anyone not enjoying
Oh man this is peak college days for me, dripping in 90's.
Portishead is amazing stuff.
There's quite a few more from Portishead that deserve a listen. Looking forward to more.
Yes, much more here to hear....
Funny you bring up issac Hayes. He is sampled on this track. Boom!
Finally, one of my favorite music reactors reacts to Portishead. They are SUPER underrated.
It's composed almost perfectly. Not to mention the fact that the performers are all up to the task. Live at Roseland is FULL of gems
The entirety of these 1997 filmed live song performances is fire.
You are Spot On Sir…
This Song samples "Ike's Rap II" by Isaac Hayes.
Beth Gibbons is amazing.
Portishead are so good, all their albums are ace.

She is actually painfully shy though
Portishead and Massive Attack are the main guys in trip hop.
Your forgetting Tricky and first album from Moloko

Certain that Polo would dig Morcheeba.
The bassline is from an Isaac Hayes track
What a great band, and perfect first song for them.
Gone but not forgotten, the great Portishead. Merry Christmas Polo !

This song is sampled from Isaacs Hayes - Ike's Rap 2, maybe that's where the gangsta feel come from i guess. Great song.
The music is sampled from "Isaac Hayes - Ike's Rap 2".

Their best song is HALF DAY CLOSING (studio album version) it’s so ghostly and witchy it mesmerizes you. 👻🧙🎃
Do "Strangers" from the same live performance next.
That was great Merry Xmas
More trip hop, Massive Attack
Liked this before video even started
Portishead is incredible. Check out Roads by Portishead asap.
If you like Portishead, check out Hooverphonic and Massive Attack!
Why does all the best, most interesting music come from the UK?
Resembles a Natalie Imbruglia song I know.
You need to listen to John Martyn's version....
She using smoking to ease the tension in her vocal chords.
Beth Gibbons; "Tom the Model"
