A very good video for guys like me, who are playing their first Street Fighter, have learned the basics using Ryu and now want to experiment with other characters. Thank you
Amazing breakdown of Zangief. I’m an Akuma player thanks to sako. However Gief is a character I think fits my play style also. Right now I’m gathering information on the character and soon I’ll be on my way to putting Gief officially on my team. Excellent video Ultra David.
Nice video, David! Would love to see more of these. Also super looking forward to you and James getting into more full-roster stuff and general mechanics with First Attack.
I main Zangief and thought at first that Lariat was completely useless since it's not a reliable anti-air anymore, but its main use now is for combos. You can do: Deep Body Splash, Headbutt, st.lk xx Lariat which does near 300 dmg. That's not bad for a meterless crossup.
Would be awesome if there was one for Vega! I find him so hard to use and there's few people who use him efficiently :( Nash and Ken catch my interest too though
great overview but you forgot options for fireballs. As a veteran zangief i can safely say that most new players hate playing gief because of fireballs and heavy zoners.
@@teddyface4972 Quite a few : Charged standing HP armor through some projectiles and even dish a crush counter if in range, Headbutt (F+HP) will cancel out fireballs , V skill 1 to build up V trigger and advance ( must be careful not to get crushed ) , the lariat can dodge most if not all projectiles, and you can gain some terrain by advancing while spinning. But his best Tool by far is the V trigger 1, as not only can it dodge fireballs but the vacuum wave sucks in the opponent, making it an effective deterrent and tactical response to most keep away strats ( except dhalsim ... fuck dhalsim )
Great guide! I have a pretty good Gief so far and i just reached Silver, but Ryu, Ken & Rashid keep beating me when they spam Hadoukens and Whirlwinds and keep him away from the opponent, how do you get around these spammers?
just a quick question can you combo standing forward fierce into crouching strong then into super? and is he able to combo into super after getting a hit with iron muscle?
unless you can move your stick at incredible speeds you're going to need to buffer the input during another move or while jumping. As much as you'll get called a scrub if the opponent is in kill range wake up super is viable since it comes out frame 1
Thank you for this David! I'm practicing hard to be good with Gief as he's the only character with execution I can handle. Do you know what the difference is between the different strengths of air spd?
Yeah I noticed the ranges are like the regular spds but I was just wondering if there were any other benefits or downsides. So far I've found little reason to use MP or HP versions. Just LP and EX.
Wladislav, the different strengths have different ranges. LP and EX have crazy range. MP I never really use myself and HP has shorter range. They all do different amounts of damage also LP being the lowest damage to HP the highest damage, except EX of course which does extra damage. As previously stated, they all leave you at different distances from the opponent upon completion. HP and EX being closest to LP being furthest away (but still within dash and LP SPD distance). EX also has throw invincibility on start up I believe. I'm sure they all come out in the same amount of frames. I haven't seen the frame data but it feels like they're the same. This is just from my basic use of him in SFV. Hope this helps. Also, just to test the ranges, have a play about in practice mode. You'll be amazed at the range of LP SPD....
how do you beat nash players who abuse booms and defensive jumping? if i try to walk and block, the booms have enough blockstun to halt any progress i made. if i try to jump he can dash up and anti-air. and i find it very hard to keep them in the corner. im getting very frustrated so id really appreciate any help or tips.
the 360 is made easier if you know that, technically, you don't have to make a full circle with the stick or d-pad. if you start by holding back, and then rotate from down-back, down, down-forward, forward, and then up-forward, and press any punch right at the end of the motion, you will get the spd. there is a guide on the street fighter subreddit for performing the spd, they can probably explain it better than i can 🙇
Great video. Is there a way of using V-Trigger 1 Safe ? I mean, every time I use it my opponent punish me first... Thanks and Greetings from Switzerland !
+Jason Ko You get frame advantage but receive damage in grey health form. So if you get slapped while recovering from that it's like you never defended those attacks at all.
Faresb2000 I used to play many games but now I don't have much time to do it. When I have time, I play SFV, but I also enjoy The Witcher III, older ACs, God of War, Uncharted, sports games, Rayman Legends, Tekken, Gran Turismo... I'm very eclectic when it comes to games. My least favorite games are turn based rpgs(although I like turn-based strategy games, no idea why that happens) and games like heavy rain, where you only define what course of action will happen. What about you?
Will you do a video about how poorly the sf5 release has been with online and server issues never mind the bare bones game they gave us for full retail price ?? Also I'm watching people even get disconnected and kicked from The survival game mode !!
+TheGodOfPez what kind of excuse is that? "it was my first day at job", come on dude capcom fucked up real hard on the release, i'd rather have full sf5 released on june rather than this beta 5 street fighter, can't even play with my friends.
+TheGodOfPez .....I hate how people say its day one or day 2 this should be expected !! No it shouldn't. Gamers play online games every day all day with numbers thats destroy what sf5 would pull in and they can handle the traffic !! never mind this is a 1 vs 1 game !! Capcom dropped the ball hard with this release
+Yui Karica ....im sure if nothing else worked but the online function of the game it wouldnt be such a failed launch !! they had how many betas ??? 2 or 3 ..maybe more and they still couldn't fix the server issues ?? People are asking for too much. Buy a game for 60 bucks.......and have it work as they promoted and sold us on !!!
His standing jab is bullshit. The best one in the game. Thing about 3D graphics is that you can put hitboxes all over the animation lines. In 2D animated games, it's only on certain frames where the hand is unless it has a hitbox with no animated frame.
ZANGIEF SUCKS. Played 100 games against a chun player.(also is it my imagination or does gief have even less pre jump frames in sf5 then 4? standing spds are so finicky now) On defense he gets rushed down too easily because he doesnt have anything to keep anyone honest even with meter and vtrigger. Aside from the threat of super theres nothing stopping people from going in on gief. In the mid range his buttons dont have the speed to punish most stuff, his "confirms" need you to be right on top of someone and if you misjudge the distance the recovery on lariat is horrible. He cant confirm into big damage during neutral with his buttons aside from landing a lucky hp into v trigger and once your v triggers gone you dont have a good confirm. Even if you properly space your spds perfectly you can still get hit out or crush counters -__-; gief cant safely neutralize fireballs from a lot of characters after they get super stocked because he recovers too slowly and just eats it. close range gief is actually worse then at mid range. His slow 4-5 frame normals get beat out by a lot of 3 framers that can also confirm into fat damage. If you try to spd close range theres even higher chance youll get hit out by a mashed jab or a mashed throw or dp. Off a jump in gief doesnt get any damage either. you need to land deep to get the lariat combo, if not you get 1 heavy and thats it. Most frustrating of all is there is nothing to disuade people from holding up/up back/back dashing in a string. so they eat a few jabs or a mk or whatever(or if your luck with the hard read a air spd), most of the cast can catch up in damage with their useful vtriggers or better neutral. -tldr zangief spends most of the match chasing people down trying to catch them. When the other character gets v trigger and full meter they can activate and go nuts because gief doesnt have a way to get them off him other then V reversal, which also cuts back on his comeback factor. Once gief has no trigger aside from ultra gief doesnt have any way to get back into the fight because of his bad oki.
Zangief V trigger is crap haha I'm play zangief and when it's activate ur opponent can beat u or jump you or another things is he can make the special on u so v trigger is very awful

Great overview for Gief. Thanks for sharing this. If love to see you do something like this for Sim
+UltraChenTV Looking forward to it!
Oh man, please make more of these! This is great for a new player. Simple, concise, and I love the reason to play at the end. X)
Good shit, UltraDavid. I was playing Gief like SF4 today for fun but now I'm thinking of actually playing him seriously and this video helps for sure.
Excellent Video. I've learnt some new things from this that I will utilise in my early career as a Gief player and beyond
I switched to gief on sf5 with controller for exactly the same reason... learn to be patient.. and I'm enjoying it .. great review.
Nice video, David! Would love to see more of these. Also super looking forward to you and James getting into more full-roster stuff and general mechanics with First Attack.
That was a very nice commentary honestly. I remained entertained throughout the entire video.
I didn't know V Trigger was so versatile. Definitely something I'm going to practice in the weeks to come
The air spining piledriver is called Borcht Dynamite
is ed norton narrating this?
😂
Nice video! :)
But you forgot 2 important strategies. Charge HP as anti air and F+HP to neutralize projectiles. It's his green hand now.
his head is his hand? lol
why didn't you mention that Gief only needs jab to win games? Jab anti air, 3 jab link combos.
Crush St. HP combos into ST.HK>vtrigger>EX air SPD.
3:58 notice how Zangief's foot is floating over Ken's. Is this phycho power?!?!?
Wow this vids a great foundation for future geifs. Thumbs up sir 😬
Great vid, David! Thank you!
That ending though lol thank you for the combo tips!
Thanks UltraDavid!!
lol of course! his command grab is the most satisfying!
David, who do you think has the 2nd most satisfying command grab in the game so far!?
Really well done. i played gief in the beta but i feel like his range was nerffed since then. Thanks for the tips great video.
this is very helpful
This was great, I don't play gief but it helped me learn how to fight against him!
great video "For Mother Russia"
Putin is proud of Gief and did the Cossak dance
Thank you David
Would be awesome if there was one for Vega! I find him so hard to use and there's few people who use him efficiently :( Nash and Ken catch my interest too though
great overview but you forgot options for fireballs. As a veteran zangief i can safely say that most new players hate playing gief because of fireballs and heavy zoners.
+Maxime Deslauriers What are the options for fireballs?
@@teddyface4972 Quite a few : Charged standing HP armor through some projectiles and even dish a crush counter if in range, Headbutt (F+HP) will cancel out fireballs , V skill 1 to build up V trigger and advance ( must be careful not to get crushed ) , the lariat can dodge most if not all projectiles, and you can gain some terrain by advancing while spinning. Are you planning to do the entire roster?
Great guide! I have a pretty good Gief so far and i just reached Silver, but Ryu, Ken & Rashid keep beating me when they spam Hadoukens and Whirlwinds and keep him away from the opponent, how do you get around these spammers?
Rakim Jefferson i am going to start playin him. from what i see people use headbutt or iron muscle to counter this
how do you buffer into air SPD?
just a quick question can you combo standing forward fierce into crouching strong then into super? and is he able to combo into super after getting a hit with iron muscle?
Anyone have any tips for inputting Gief's super? I always either jump or get regular SPD.
unless you can move your stick at incredible speeds you're going to need to buffer the input during another move or while jumping. As much as you'll get called a scrub if the opponent is in kill range wake up super is viable since it comes out frame 1
Input the command while you are blocking for a good follow up
great stuff thanks!
Thank you for this David! I'm practicing hard to be good with Gief as he's the only character with execution I can handle.
Do you know what the difference is between the different strengths of air spd?
Different ranges and leave you at different distances after
Yeah I noticed the ranges are like the regular spds but I was just wondering if there were any other benefits or downsides. So far I've found little reason to use MP or HP versions. Just LP and EX.
+Wladislav well like I said, different distances. MP and HP leave you closer after the dunk which is good for obvious reasons
Ah I didn't notice the different distances after the throw. Thanks for the heads-up.
Wladislav, the different strengths have different ranges. LP and EX have crazy range. MP I never really use myself and HP has shorter range. They all do different amounts of damage also LP being the lowest damage to HP the highest damage, except EX of course which does extra damage. Is there a way to confirm into spd, like meaty on wake up, or ticking into spd?
how do you beat nash players who abuse booms and defensive jumping? if i try to walk and block, the booms have enough blockstun to halt any progress i made. if i try to jump he can dash up and anti-air. and i find it very hard to keep them in the corner. im getting very frustrated so id really appreciate any help or tips.
How do you stand SPD? I always end up jumping.

+BoopingBanana Thank you!
these vids are great, do you plan on making an Alex One?
how do you hit confirm form a single hit, do you just buffer the next attack?
I'm a real noob with SFV. I love Gief, but I keep jumping when trying for a SPD. How do you not jump with a 360 input?
Me too I have the same issue, if someone demonstrate it will be useful
Go from forward to upper back quickly. Inputing the button at upper back position triggers the move and will not make you jump.
Hi, do you have a video on how to play Ryu?
Great video.
Is there a way of using V-Trigger 1 Safe ?
I mean, every time I use it my opponent punish me first...
Thanks and Greetings from Switzerland !
Thank you
How you do piledriver without jumping???
So in order to do piledriver without jumping you hit the up and punch at the same time.
Is armoring through attacks better than blocking?
+Jason Ko You get frame advantage but receive damage in grey health form. So if you get slapped while recovering from that it's like you never defended those attacks at all.
DuckieMcduck wouldn't blocking be less risky then
Jason Ko Frame advantage allows you to punish attacks that aren't normally punishable by blocking. Yes blocking is less risky but offers less reward.
If that switch rumor is true im getting champion edition and im gonna use gief. Im totally new
and season 2.8?
HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THE SPINNING PILEDRIVER?!?!? TELL ME THE BUTTONS PLEASE!
I cannot believe they forgot to mention standing HP as anti-air. It is pretty damn freaking good considering the armor.
you should do one on ryu since he's the go to beginner chars
Is that kuma from tekken?
Street Fighter v confirming again that tekken and Street Fighter are in the same universe lol
+Leo Oliveira Thank you so much i am going to sub to you ;D and thanks for telling me that i was wondering about that also do you play league?
Faresb2000 league of Legends? No I don't
+Leo Oliveira what games do you play?

my trumpcard is zangief in sfv
RIP gief
I don't know but I'm here trying to learn sfv and zangief because of hi score girl 🥴
