  • How to use Retinol and Vitamin C together is a common question I get asked everyday.
    In this video we will address how to use vitamin a and vitamin c in your skincare routine.
    Undoubtedly Vit A/ aka Retinoids and vitamin C are two of the most well-studied important, powerfully effective, and efficient ingredients for your skin. Both are known to fight wrinkles, build collagen and fade dark spots and pigmentation.
    However, fitting them into your skincare routine can be super tricky. And I often get asked Can you actually use them together? Should you layer one on top of the other if so Which one goes on first? Can you mix them together? Do you need to wait in between them? And the answer is far from straight forward my friends it is not as simple as layering one ingredient over the other SO in this video, I am going to tell you The 5 best ways to use retinol and vitamin C in your skincare routine as well as My top retinol and vitamin C product picks.
    Options #1:
    Using a product that is already formulated with both ingredients. Why would you want to do this well. It's easiest. There’s no guesswork and Vitamin c actually helps retinol work better by stabilizing it, extending its effectiveness
    Option#2: Vitamin C in the Morning, Retinol at Night
    Your easiest course of action is to separate vitamin C and retinol from each other and apply them at different times of the day. This decreases your risk of irritation takes out the guess work of how to layer things and allows you to incorporate and there get the benefit of each ingredient every single day. Additionally, Vit C has been proven to boost the effectiveness of your sunscreen so applying it right before your sunscreen gives an added boost to your protection.
    Option #3
    DNA damage continues for hours after exposure to UV light and suggests it could be prevented with a nightly antioxidant, like vitamin C. Vitamin C and Retinol on Alternate Nights. By using retinol and vitamin C on alternate nights, you'll get the benefits of both, without having to worry about interactions or irritation
    Option #4
    Vitamin C and Retinol at Night, 30 Minutes Apart
    If you have resistant skin, never react to anything and insist on using retinol and L-ascorbic acid at the same time, separate them by 30 minutes. Apply your vitamin C first, since it has the lower pH of the two. Then, wait half an hour before you apply your retinol the waiting period allows your skin's pH to return to normal and decreases the risk of irritancy.
    Option #5
    Using a Retinol Mask and Vitamin C Derivative at Night or Vice versa.
    Now that you’ve got it down and picked the perfect option for you to combine retinoid and vitamin C, here are my top product recommendations:

      For #4 I’ve heard so many opinions about this all over, some say 1 or few minutes and some say don’t even layer them because they counteract each other slightly or something along those lines, seems the most common is #2 is what most recommend from my research

    This is the first video on this topic that I’ve heard say “avoid the corners of your eyes, nose, and mouth”. Such a great tip for me getting started, since I have such sensitive skin and used to get irritation in these spots from even the gentle Differin cream I would use for acne. Also…I am definitely going to sit up and listen to skin advice from someone with such incredibly beautiful skin herself! Gorgeous and highly intelligent. I will be subscribing.

    Wow, thank you so much for this informative video. As I enter into my late 20’s I started noticing small signs of aging. I decided to hop on it and start taking better care of my skin and invest into some quality products. It’s nice to know that some of the products I am now using you mentioned! I also incorporated using a vitamin c serum In the morning before my moisturizer and a retinol at night before moisturizing. After doing research on how to safely use retinols I started off only using it twice a week (Monday and Friday’s and only at night as retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun) I am noticing a HUGE difference! I also, have really loved using Laroche Posays gentle cleanser and double repair moisturizer but I def will be trying there prescription gel after you mentioning it! Plus, I already had been eyeing it lol. Love your videos! As a woman of color, its a breathe of fresh air to see a woman that looks like us in the dermatology field. Keep up the great work!❤️

    I am a new subscriber...new follower...now an avid watcher!!! I recently had an irritation on my face from using Tatcha products several weeks ago. Although I've had highly sensitized skin all my life, I was always very ignorant to things I should/shouldn't be using on my skin/ face because I never took the time to fully educate myself. Since delving in and getting a better understanding, I've realized just because the product is "high end" or expensive does not mean you won't have allergic reactions to the ingredients it contains. Since finding your channel, I've learned so much and I'm so excited that I'm now able to use certain cleansers, moisturizers, retinols and sun screens because I now know which ones are better suited for me and my skin. I'm in my 40's and I wish I had found you sooner so that I would have been able to start my preventative regimen versus trying to play catch-up. Either way, I couldn't be more ecstatic about the journey ahead. I even made an appointment for my daughter to see you. I won't make the same mistake with her. See You Soon :)

    My first time in this channel & I already learned a lot. I have read that the best Vit C is in a powder form (The Ordinary) and to apply it, it must be mixed w/ your favorite moisturizer so by doing this you will always get a fresh mixture of Vit C. I agree with the logic but I'd like to get your take on it. Thank you in advance🙂

    • @viviany8124
      @viviany8124 2 роки тому

      @@tatianabryant3212 hello there,
      That definitely was not my intention. Personally, all I meant was she is very easy to follow and learn skincare from and I've made next to similar comments on posts of women with other skin tones (Dr. Dray is another fave derm on YT for me and many). I'm a female of colour as well and I like to see more women of colour on UA-cam, but that was not actually even something I tried to have be considered in my comment. I'm not telling her I am surprised she is eloquent for an African american. I am telling her she is eloquent because she is*, especially for a skincare persona on youtube. I Find it appropriate to tell a doctor, that they make things very easy to understand. The skin colour should not be in question of anyone's intelligence.
      People who post informative videos are not always eloquent and articulate. By any means. And I really appreciate when people are like this. Hence why I have looked at ome skin care video after another trying to find clear answers for things I searched. I trust a doctor to tell me something in a simple informative way more than an enthusiast with no professional background.
      Therefore, I'm not quite sure how me saying a doctor was eloquent made you think I was trying to imply women of colour are not eloquent, but I appreciate that you were only coming from a place of trying to be informative and I will try to reword my comments to appear different with zero confusion in the future.

      @@viviany8124 I understand. Maybe this helps…. Follow me on this one….hopefully ur a parent but if not I think you will still get it. Have you ever told a parent that their child is so well behaved. That mere statement has several undertones, one being that most children cant behave and the other eludes to the fact that that isolated this child from the rest thus making this child an exception to the rule or narrative. The same undertones is found when other races tell a black person that they are “articulate” or “eloquent” ..:.it’s a back handed compliment because In one tone there’s the perception that blacks aren’t educated or articulate and are “ghetto” and you stating that comment merely means that you have found a black person that is soo eloquent and articulate as if it’s uncommon. Now if she said the same things with an accent or slang you wouldn’t be saying articulate or eloquent as you are using European standards to define what articulate or eloquent means. Also, it’s an ironic compliment, she’s a doctor, she didn’t do all that studying to sound uneducated. Maybe next focus on the value and importance of her educating us on skin care and not her identity. You did a great job explaining it to me, go that route next time.

    Thank you for the information! I’ve been trying to figure out how to add vitamin c back into my routine. I was prescribed clindamycin solution and tretinoin 0.05% for acne. I use the tretinoin every other night and the clindamycin am and pm on the nights I don’t use tretinoin. So I think I’ll start using vitamin c every other morning when I don’t use the tretinoin at night to avoid as much irritation as possible.

    I have the Skinbetter AlphaRet Overnight cream! I had NO IDEA it had vitamin A & vitamin C combined. Makes sense now as I’ve had irritation when using it. I shouldn’t have been mixing certain PM products with it! 😳🤦🏽‍♀️ The more you learn!! Thank you!

    Doctor Alexis, I think a lot of people may think the products you recommend are expensive or on the pricey side but if you could quantify how much of a product/ballpark amount to use or how long it lasts when purchased maybe we’d be more inclined to think the product more within reach. I use to cringe at paying $55 for face sunscreen but now that I’m using it and see that it lasts a bit I’m more willing to purchase and use it regularly thanks to you and Danielle, the Style & Beauty Doc.

      @@Bunnyb23 I’ve been using Deciem products and doctor Hani’s routine for hyperpigmentation to supplement my skincare. I’d say I spend $USD 170 every 8-12 weeks on cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, alpha arbutin, mandelic acid, niacinamide, vitamin c, SPF, and azelaic acid.

      Or rearrange the perception. Consider it as a investment to self. Half of the time we unconsciously throw this kind of money away on stuff we don’t need anyhow.

    • @cv7958
      @cv7958 2 роки тому +2

      I agree with investing in the skin by using high quality products but I disagree that sunscreen should “last a bit.” Whether inexpensive or expensive, sunscreen should be applied liberally and frequently. It shouldn’t last long to be honest. Serums and prescriptions are another story.

    • @TopherTino
      @TopherTino 2 роки тому +4

      @@cv7958 when I say long lasting I don’t mean application to the face I mean the amount of product you get vs the money you spend vs how long it takes you to go through a product of that size.
