Painting a Landscape study using the Zorn Palette on Newsprint Paper

- Painting this landscape study using the Zorn palette was great fun! I painted onto un-primed newsprint paper (as an experiment for sketching with oil paint) and found it to be an excellent, absorbent surface which I will definitely use again.
The view I chose to paint was the one which I see everyday from my studio window, which I have painted and drawn hundreds (yes hundreds!) of times. I mixed some walnut oil with the paints to give it some flow.
The Zorn palette generally consists of Cadmium Red, Ivory Black, Yellow Ochre and White. Anders Zorn probably used Lead White and Vermillion (and maybe a few other colours too) but this is what we use as the modern day version of his palette. It is a good, fun way of painting with a very limited palette although probably more suited to portrait painting rather than landscape work.
I hope you enjoy the video - I am not trying to do anything clever with this one - just having some fun painting!
Bye for now
Andrew
Also i didnt think the bright red colour you applied at first would work, but you made it work somehow! Which is like amazing
Thank you so much
Love this pallete teaches you more about colour theory than any book. Always harmonious too.
I agree. It keeps the painting together
Very enlightening using the Zorn Palette...thank you!
You are so welcome!
Andrew, great video! Love the editing and how you tell about the proces. Every Sunday it is my thumbs up!
Awesome Jan - Thank you very much
I never thought you could paint oils on newsprint, and I've never heard of the Zorn palette, but I have now. :) I really enjoy your videos, the more I watch, the more I learn. .
Zorn palette might work well where I live, in SW Alberta, just in the foothills of the rockies. The colours here are much more yellow ochre, paler greens, oranges, bright blue skies, than where I come from (Nova Scotia) in the East. For a long time I painted in deeper greens, and I still do if I'm not actually painting outdoors looking at the vegetation and skies. Its as if your brain absorbs the colours around you at an early age, and it doesn't go away.
Thanks so much Susan.
That sounds like a great palette for you to try for your beautiful landscape. Newsprint paper is very good for practice 😃
I've never seen the Zorn pallete used for landscapes but it's quite lovely! Thank you for always being so inspirational!
You are so welcome Keke - thank you for watching
It´s amazing what you achieved using Zorn´s palette on this beautiful view from your studio! Thank you so much for showing your process Andrew! Stay well and painting!
Thank you very much Cristina. I was pleased with the outcome 😃
Your painting has a very nice look, much like a watercolor. I enjoyed watching!
Thank you very much Judith. It is a beautiful palette to use and I really enjoyed trying oils with the newsprint paper
Hi Andrew! I've been out of touch for a bit and now I'm binge watching your channel yay! So enjoy it! Your exhibit is fantastic! Really enjoyed your mixed media in the garden as well. Looks like a lot of fun too. Just enjoyed watching this painting on the newsprint. You did a great job with the Zor pallet - it turned out great! Thanks again for all you do. I've started to use some of your brushing techniques and love the textures I get. It's also very fun to be expressive that way not so rigid feeling. Look forward to your videos and bravo again on your exhibit! Cheers!
Thank you so much Lynette
I’m really pleased you are inspired to get going again 😃
Another great video,I love what you achieved with this colour palette, I am inspired to try it and see what happens.
Have fun with it Anita - thanks for watching
Using the zorn pallete for a green landscape is a genius idea
Also! Oil on newsprint??!!! Never even considered it but gotta try now. Didnt know such thin newsprint could handle oil
I like the Zorn palette now and again for fun. Newsprint paper is great for practice as it is so cheap
Fantastic! Colours are just amazing....inspired to try and use the Z palette to do a landscape 👍
Thank you Darren. Have fun with your landscape painting
Great job, Andrew.
Thank you very much Bob

Hi Veronica
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope the football goes well
I'd never have thought of using the Zorn palette for a landscape - I feel I'd yearn for a blue. Still, it works, and it must be an inspiration because I've pulled my own paints and brushes out - not using the Zorn this time, though.
I don’t use Zorn for landscape painting very often but it’s a good option if you don’t want to carry many tubes of paint around 😃 and it’s a grey day
Good luck with your painting
Most of our life drawing classes were done on newsprint when I went to art school, it’s surprising how nice it is. I tried a few papers for oil painting too and found the oil seeping seemed to be the biggest problem over the first 12 months. I ended up using Arches Oil paper which is also really nice to use (made some sketch books from it)… not the same texture as newsprint though. Enjoying the vids!
Thank you Luke. I’d never painted on newsprint before and found it to really suits the way I paint. Shame it won’t last long but it’s great for practice pieces
I watched another painting video where Kraft paper was the support
Ooh I must try that. Thanks for the tip 👍🏻
Hi Andrew ... Interesting that you want to see the longevity affect on this painting study ... The black and yellow ochre actually makes a pretty good medium to dark green ...
Thanks Nancy
Black is great for greens mixed with any of the yellows. I love experimenting with different surfaces and supports
When I was a kid my parents refused to spend money on art supplies. My grandmother's brother was an extremely famous painter who drank himself destitute and into an early grave. I guess they thought piss poor behavoir and bad choices went along with an artistic eye. Anyway, I used to collect clays, dirt, burnt stuff from the wood stove, food coloring, eggs, anything to paint and draw with. The one thing they did get me was newsprint. My dad used to get huge massive rolls of newsprint from the owner of the newspaper. I had so much I even made furniture and a life size chess set from newsprint, glue and wood varnish. Didn't last long but was fun while it lasted.
My Mum bought me sketchbooks from Woolworths because when I was drawing she knew I was quiet. Newsprint is great for practicing and developing ideas. I wish I was given rolls of it when I was a kid 👍🏻
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I learned more than one can imagine using it and making my own paints. The school library was invaluable. After years my parents finally realized it wasn't a passing fad. They dirt came around.
@@phillipstroll7385 I loved our library at school too - never had books at home due to lack of money
What beautiful greens with this little palette! I love those colors. I see you use Walnut oil as a medium; but why? Does it help to make the paint thinner so you can add paint on top on paint without having to let it dry first?
Thank you for watching the video Lisa. I had a bottle of walnut oil in the studio which I don’t use anymore so thought I’d use it for this sketch. It does seem thinner than linseed oil
Does the Walnut oil give it a gloss finish ?
Not really. It seems thinner than linseed but I’ve not noticed much difference
i see some interesting books at 12:18 can you tell us about your books sometime? this is so interesting about this zorn pallette, looks great!
Thank you very much. I will happily share my art library. I’ll see if I can do a video about it soon
Hi Andrew, this is the first time I've seen using the zorn palette, very interesting indeed. I wanted to ask you a curiosity: what kind of lamp do you use to illuminate while you paint?
Hi Carlo. It’s a very interesting and fun palette to use. I used a daylight photography lamp for this one but normally I try and use natural light. I have an easel lamp which clamps on and gives a very good imitation daylight
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt thank you, sooner or later I will try that palette, I have never painted in plen air, for this reason I was interested in your type of lighting, thanks again and congratulations for your work, I like them very much. Bye for now... :)
@@isolabellart you are very welcome
Also I'd love a closer look at your color chart and understanding it? Is such a chart called something specific? 🧐
It is a chart I do with my students to show how the complimentary colours work together and you can see what is possible with such a limited palette. I will put a photo on my community section
Are those oil paintings in your sketch book? Did you lay down gesso first?
Hi Monica
If I do oil sketching in my sketchbook I usually acrylic gesso the page beforehand 👍🏻
It's a very attractive result, as usual with your work, but newsprint has the lowest durability factor of papers I've used over fifty years. It darkens by at least 3X and becomes quite brittle, falling apart just from the gravity of being lifted. Perhaps framed under the strongest UV protective glass available might add to its longevity. Check it out with a good art conservator, as its pleasant working surface might tempt you to invest too much energy and enthusiasm.
Thank you for your comments. I enjoyed the newsprint but would never do anything on it that would have longevity. I am interested to see how the painting degrades over time
Вы рисуете маслянными красками на бумаге? Бумага грунтования?
👌
How did you mix your blue for the sky
Titanium white with a hint of ivory black gives the impression of a cool grey/blue
Jason bowen much?
👍🏻
He used more colors than that. Why limit yourself. He didn't. When he needed a green I used one.
That’s true. Zorn did use other colours. I like the challenge of painting with these few colours though to see what is possible (or not)
