Remember, whether it comes to changing your lifestyle or decide to go through with surgery, you make the ultimate decision. I am just sharing my experience humbly and the mistakes I have made while suffering from this disease. I am not a professional or giving you guys medical advice. From my experience, I would have waited longer and not rushed surgery but I was impatient because I wanted my life back. I should have done more research and continued to change my lifestyle. I did not give myself the time to exhaust all my options. We live and we learn! In my channel, I share all my experiences honestly and transparently with a good heart. Any decision you make in your life is ultimately up to you! God bless and much love familial!

You’re exactly right about trading one symptom for another. I was recommended to get the operation, but because of videos like yours I decided to first change my diet slightly and sleep with my head elevated and eat smaller meals and use some antacids as needed. So far I am doing better without any surgery. I’ve improved my quality of life with minimal changes to my diet and adding occasional antacid.

I had the surgery and do not regret. Acid reflux caused from hiatal hernia caused me to aspirate stomach acid on numerous occasions into my lungs to the point I needed supplemental oxygen. The hernia started getting bigger and I began aspirating food and stomach acid into my lungs putting me in the hospital 6-7 times a year with aspiration pneumonia. My PCP didn’t want me to have the surgery, but I felt it was the best option for me. I did a lot of research and knew the things they would not tell you. There are some life style changes that you have to be willing to make, but dealing with chronic acid reflux required more. I was taking 2 nexium and 2 Pepsid prescription strength everyday and still had to sleep elevated in bed. Now I sleep flat and all night long. For me it was the right decision. My Pulmonologist said if I continued to aspirate I was at risk to be permanently intubated. Surgery so far was successful.

@@LemonsCure Weight gain is one of the causes of acid reflux and hiatal hernia. I definitely had to make a change in my eating habits. I had to lose weight before the surgery in order for it to be successful. I am continuing on my weight loss journey for overall health reasons. I had a habit of eating very quickly because of jobs that I have had. It becomes a habit that Carrie’s over into everyday life which can cause you to over eat and not realize it, therefore gain weight. Not bad if you are working and burn those calories off. When you change your occupation and are not burning as many calories, but still have a habit of eating quickly, you over eat and gain weight. I have had to break that habit and continue now because of the procedure. I stay away from highly seasoned (hot) food. I do not know if I will be able to burp again, so I don’t drink carbonated drinks like soda and beer. I have not had to take any PPI’s since my surgery almost 3 months ago. I did go through a 3 week period of diarrhea, but finally stopped. I was taking 2 Nexium 40 mg and 2 Pepcid 20 mg daily for my acid reflux and having to sleep 6-8 inches incline to keep from aspirating at night and sometimes that didn’t work. I can now sleep flat and have had no sign of acid reflux. I will continue to do my part with Gods help to make sure it stays successful. I continue to read up on studies and people like yourself that had the surgery to find out thing that I can possibly watch out for in the future or even avoid things they have done that have caused problems for them. I researched a lot for months before my surgery about the different type of procedures and went to different forums. When I went to my GI doctor and he referred me to this surgeon, he said he was very good. I researched him and to several places that had people that had that same surgery done by him and they highly recommended him. I spent a lot of time in prayer before my surgery because I was a high risk simply because of my lungs. I literately had no fear and even in pre-op the surgeon mentioned how calm I was. I had no problems after the surgery. The took pain meds at night to sleep that was it. When I got home the next day I took 3- 4 pain pill. That was only because of the pain from the gas they fill you up with. I was up and around the next day. Your surgeon has a lot to do with your surgery. We do have some extremely good surgeons where I am from.

Thank you for the video! I agree with one of the previous comments that perhaps your surgery has failed/or something’s gone wrong. What you describe are exactly the side effects of the surgery but these are meant to be temporary and resolve over time (if I recall correctly, my surgeon said up to 12 months). I must admit, I was quite surprised you were offered surgery so fast after developing symptoms. It took me 13 years to finally get a ‘yes’! 😂 Also, I’d only add to remember that GERD is a progressive disease that overtime can lead to very serious complications + long term medication also can wreck havoc with you (especially women, eg osteoporosis in later age). This is why it is important for some people to have the surgery. Wishing you speedy recovery! 🙏🏻

    • @CarlosGranados1
      @CarlosGranados1  3 роки тому

Some of the side effects don't ever leave. They decrease over time but it is rare that they fade away completely. Especially since the surgery tempered with your anatomy so much. That is why I stated that you trade one symptom for another. I believe surgery can be great for people but it should be the last resource. Trying to heal yourself naturally is the best route. Thanks for sharing your story. I've been having digestion issues since birth and I've been living with hiatal hernia and GERD symptoms since about 20 (I'm now 42). I also considered surgery, but the problem was that doctors could not convincingly explain to me which of my symptoms were caused by GERD and which were caused by some other issues I've been having (sluggish digestion, overly sensitive nervous system). So, I did not want to risk having even more symptoms. Still, fighting nausea and acid refluxes (I have four different kinds of acidic symptoms) almost every day is not easy.

@@shaneshrimp6519 They cannot really fix it to work exactly the same as in a healthy person. The general method (Nissen fundoplication) is that they (in simple terms) wrap your stomach around and stitch it closer to the diaphragm to guarantee that the hernia will not return soon. However, this method has some side effects, and some of them can be quite bad for some people, especially in cases when there are other digestion issues besides the hernia. I'm in the risk zone. Unfortunately, the medicine is not that powerful. The human body is a tightly integrated system. It is not enough to physically reshape an organ to prevent it from sliding around if you cannot ensure that the adjacent organs are also functioning properly and that the nervous system is sending proper signals everywhere.

2 years ago with my 1st endoscopy they found an ulcer, which i treated and got rid of. I believe the doctor also said i had a hiatal hernia somewhere around the esophagus. The omeprozole Helps with the acid but not with the regurgitation. I don’t eat animals, (for about 9 years now) not even eggs. It’s a real tough time sometimes as I can’t keep leafy greens down, also the skin of certain foods like apples or grapes, even the veins of watermelon. I’ve just stopped taking my omeprozole today and won’t take it for about 2 weeks. Next week I’m doing an Esophageal manometry test, then the following week will do endoscopy and they will attach a temporary device which will measure the levels of stomach acid. I am about 10 weeeks post stretta preocedure. It is supposed to take about 3-4 months to show therapeutic relief, with relief continuing to improve as time goes on (the procedure slowly grows the lower esphageal sphincter). This is a very non invasive procedure and substantially safer than the fundoplication. I recommend trying it as I feel great compared to before. I am really approaching normalcy which I believed might have been impossible as recently as a year ago. There is a chance that the procedure might need to be repeated if the sphincter does not maintain the changes, but even a repeat would be nothing major. This has worked better than anything else I have tried. Please look it up and message me if you have any questions.

I just want to have my life back and be my old self, but I guess I am going to have to be honest with myself and accept that my hiatal hernia is part of me now, so I will have to live accordingly. To be fair my symptoms are a lot better now 3 years after it all started. I did the same mistake as you back then and did not listen to my body when I was experiencing heartburn almost a year before the real nightmare started - heart palpitations, nausea, heartburn and regurgitation. After that I started taking PPIs on and off for 3 years, but now I have been off the pills for almost 2 months and rarely get heartburn. I follow my strict diet and started doing yoga, which really helps strengthen my diaphragm. And even though I feel a lot better now, sometimes I get tired and depressed of not being able to live like I used to, so I was still considering the surgery, because the hiatal hernia is only going to get bigger as I age, but your video changed my mind. I’m going to accept that this is my life now and I have to be very disciplined going about it and try to live it out the best way I can! Just knowing the acid flow stopped is reassuring that the acid flow cant cause more damage in my body i had a undiagnosed hiatel hurnia for years and the acid flow damged my esophagus i cant eat now but just knowing i may have a chance to live a longer life now makes me happy. this procedure helped me id rather battle the syptoms of this operation rather then having a constant acid flow in my body that can eventually damage my organs. Think about it acid from your stomach liquefy your food its not suppose to liquefy your organs? So if you have severe problems with acid check for a hiatel hurnia cuz sometime specialist cant see them get a second opinion as well. Wish you all the best prayers are with you 🙏

It's good to have come across your video. I have had the symptoms for 20 years and has been to ER several times. I didn't think it could be serious since the regurgitation isn't painful, and it became an ordinary thing for me so I didn't mind my diet and lifestyle, until my most recent ER, a month ago, where even a simple paracetamol IV would cause me to vomit badly. I just had my ultrasound and will have endoscopy next, and hoping for a good result. I really hope it's not something the doctors will recommend surgery for.

This guy is very honest about it, and I was thinking yesterday to ask my GI that I'm considering LYNX surgery. I've been on PPI meds for more than 15 years and I'm still miserable and also afraid of their bad side effects. I just had my endoscopy last Feb 2023 and I have a bit of Barretts. I told my doc that I don't feel any better with all these PPI meds and he agreed the I have a valid reason to be concerned. Your chance of getting cancer in the esophagus is low he said and no, will not get dementia, kidney, heart, lung problems. He said it's not even advisable to do RFA now. But he changed my med and prescribed me Famotidine, it's not a PPI. Alternate it w/ Protonix first in the beginning and also take Gaviston if you need. I took Famotidine yesterday and I don't have those burning feelings in my esophagus yet... so I'm hoping this med is good and I also agree to change our diet and lose weight.

Hi Carlos. Thank you so much for all of your help, support, and honesty. I messaged back and forth with you some time ago and found that your symptoms and pains were very similar to mine. Well, my Dr contacted me and wants to do my surgery on January 18th. I honestly don't think I want my stomach wrapped around my esophagus, but am considering the placement of the magnetic esophageal ring, (sorry forgot the proper name). lol I just wanted to update you, but mostly just wanted to thank you for what you are doing and let you know that the good you have done and continue to do is so valuable. I did want to close by saying that I too have at times unbearable heart palpitations. I always pretty much have palpitations, however at times my heart goes into what I think is called Afib, where it does not stop palpitating and feels as though it just cant get a rhythm going and the longest it lasted was 15 mins, the scariest 15 mins I can remember in quite a while. I will continue to keep in touch with you and to my UA-cam Gerds family, stay strong together, you are all in my prayers and hope for you all the best. Carlos, from the bottom of my palpitating heart, thank you so much my brother.

Please be careful with the surgery, if you have a hiatal hernia that is too large then the gerd surgery is not recommended and you focus more on a hiatal hernia surgery. See if you can try a stretta procedure, but again if the hernia is a big problem then they might want you to handle that instead of the stretta.

I was just diagnosed with GERD a couple months ago. It went from me getting my hearing checked at an ENT clinic to getting an endoscopy by a GI Care specialist. I’ve been taking different medications so far which is hard to tell if they’ve been working or not. I found that just eating a meal triggers the acid reflux. Ive avoided a lot of foods I grew up eating like spicy and sour flavours. The symptoms are usually worse either very late in the evening or very early in the day. I just did research on surgery a couple minutes ago and came across your video. Glad I did. Learned a few things. My acupuncturist gave me a soup recipe for gastritis. I've been dealing with reflux for 5+ years and for the last 2 years, medicine stopped working for me, legit just woke up one day and my throat was killing me.
the best medicine I tried was Pantoprozole. It was amazing until it stopped working and the only thing that has stopped me from hating life has been this soup.
      Soup Recipe:
      1 cup water
      1 cup green onions
      (bring to a boil)
While that gets to a boil, mix the following:
1 teaspoon Miso (red or brown)
1 teaspoon Kudzu (I buy mine from amazon or store.edenfoods.com/kuzu-root-starch-organic/)
I sadly will prob need surgery, but if you can cure yours with diet and medicine or something natural... you're one of the lucky ones.

Carlos thank you for sharing what you’ve gone through with your surgery. I just found you, new sub here. You’re so correct surgery is a big deal it does change the anatomy. I had a complete hysterectomy 12 yrs ago which I should’ve got a second opinion. After the complete hysterectomy I had to learn to laugh a new way because when I laughed a good hard laugh my stomach got stuck. I have to be careful the way I turn to my left & right, I can’t allow myself to feel hunger pain, can’t let my stomach growl something feels like it’s pushing up into my chest. I’ve been suffering like this for 12 yrs. The last few months that pushing up into my chest has gotten worse it now feels like it’s twisting & almost feels like it’s going to explode. I literally have to push it down really hard & let me tell you that tires my arms out, the pain radiates to my right shoulder blade & it lasts longer than 30min. I went to the ER last week about it but they were more focused on my heart saying they have to run test to make sure I didn’t have clogged arteries, damaged heart or anything. While I appreciate they checked my heart, they Didn’t do extensive testing for the reason I was there. They did say I have a hernia & GERD. They prescribed pantoprazole &recommend I have an endoscopy. Now, I’m not saying the hysterectomy caused this but I never had this problem prior to the hysterectomy & this literally started right after the hysterectomy. It has gotten worse over the years, so I agree with you definitely weigh out your options, get second opinions & pray for the best.

So now I just learn to live with it . It’s definitely way better than it was before GB removal. I am learning to accept it . Mb years from now I will look into surgery. At this point I don’t want anymore surgery .

Thank you so much for sharing this. Ive been struggling with gerd/hiatal hernia for 3 years now. Meds doesnt work. My hernia also has grown quite a bit. Ive tried everything i can think of (and alot of advice from other people and doctors). Im now at the point where surgery is an option, and to be honest, i cant continue living like this. I dont eat (food comes back up, along with acid), i dont sleep, i have a hard time breathing. I feel nauseous 24/7. I cant work, i dont socialize anymore. I know surgery is a big deal, im aware of that. But as of now, it can really help me. And i researched the surgeries that could be options, so im aware of all things that can go wrong. (Including the no burping and more farting). Not be able to burp or fart more, ill gladly take that instead of the no eat and no sleep issues (and thats just a small part of my symtoms as of now). Ive heard both good and bad about surgeries for this. (And also, i live in a country where surgery is free, so dont have to think about the economy part of it).

As a professional practicing GERD surgery, I am really sorry you have such a bad experience. I would like to mention a couple of things - if you would allow me to: GERD is a mechanical problem, similar to a leaking tap. Surgical treatment is the only mechanical available at the moment. Anything else as you may understand is a remedy to ease the symptoms - such as putting a bucket under the leaking tap. From first symptoms to proper diagnosis there should be quite a few diagnostic examinations AND a few months trial of medical management (as opposed to treatment since medications cannot treat it but rather manage your symptoms). Patients become surgical candidates if: 1. medications fail, 2. Do not want to or cannot take medications 3. The reason behind GERD is a hiatal hernia which can only grow larger with age, or a combination of the above. Nissen wrap is a very effective procedure in dealing with reflux and regurgitation but as any other procedure might have adverse effects. Inability to burp or vomit, bloatedness and "gassses" are some of them with dysphagia - difficulty swallowing - being the most important one. TO AVOID any of the above there is an extensive PRE-OPERATIVE array of test to help us surgeons offer you he patient the best procedure for you and tailor it intraoperatively so as to treat your GERD but avoid most if not all adverse effects. Despite surgery's best intentions and efforts, sometimes results as bad as yours do occur (GERD not fully treated, several adverse problems arisen). I can't and won't comment on the fact that all thses should have been in your consent form and pre-peratve consultation. But since you are now in this situation - desperate enough to warn people against such an intervention - I would strongly advise you to consult again with your surgeon (or another one should confidence is lost) to have your Nissen revised or undone. Scary as it may sound it is a viable and safe option that could help you. Just make sure you get a proper consultation, pro-op check up of your current condition and a comprehensive consent form!

    • @CarlosGranados1
      @CarlosGranados1  2 роки тому +2

Thank you for your comment, hopefully, many people can learn from this information. As far as my issues go, I already had my surgery reversed. I was naive and didn't do my research well on the side effects and how bad they could become in the future, so that is on me. It was unfortunate that my surgeon did not emphasize them enough though. But he didn't push the surgery on me either, he gave me an option and ultimately it was my decision. The purpose of this video was to bring more awareness to the side effects and the further consequences these types of surgeries can have. We as people make the mistake of putting so much faith in surgery because we are desperate to get our life back. I would love to have you on my live videos if you would be done with that. My subscribers would love to learn from more professionals and also ask you questions. God bless you!!

Unfortunately if the meds do work people end up on them forever! You can go to almost any gerd video and read comments from people saying they have been on these drugs for 10, 15, 20 years or more. All the drugs do is treat the symptoms so why not try treating the symptoms with food, yoga, chiropractor, or anything that won,t add fuel to the fire with dangerous side effects.

I do think that some videos on youtube help, and they inform you of good and bad, but my experience is that of many after this operation.
I know this is going to sound negative, but although the Fundoplication is the answer to most peoples prayers, it isn't a long term answer for ... Just like PPIs.
I'd had reflux issues 1986, and it took until 2012 to have my Fundoplication, and the good days only last for just over 2 years. Roll forward to 2017 the Fundoplication is non existent, and things were far worse than 2012.
The damage had been done, and now the Fundoplication and compromised Vagus nerve has lead to even worse problems with swallowing, regurgitation, vomiting and upper /:lower GI tract issues.
The operation is only offered up as a last ditch solution in the UK now, as the negatives outweigh the positives.
If someone had told me my reflux issues were caused by low acid ( not high acid levels ), I'd of laughed at them, but that was the real cause back in 2012. Taking PPIs made it worse, and the Fundoplication caused more damage. Low acid causes the failure of the GI / Oesophageal interface / sphincter and altered motilty.
..... Just think before you opt to go under the knife, because once the surgery fails, you're in a whole new ball game.
Regurgitation and vomiting is now the new normal with every meal .... think before having surgery.

Thanks so much for the reply! Yes I have gotten 2 ct scans, 3 X-rays, a ton of blood test. I have done a barium swallow and an endoscopy. I have also been tested for auto immune diseases. Everything has came back negative except for Gerds. When the doctor did the endoscopy she said everything looks great come off the meds your fine. Then a few days later she called me back with the biopsies from my endoscopy and said that I have uncontrollable acid reflex. Which is crazy because I have never had acid reflex in my entire life. This all just started literally out of the blue about 2 and half months ago. I just woke up one day and couldn’t breathe, then I couldn’t swallow, and then I had severe pain in my lower sternum. I still have all these same symptoms and I have now lost 32 pounds because of it. But all of the doctors say they don’t know why other then they believe it is Gerds. So I have been on so many different ppi’s and h2 blockers and nothing has really helped or stopped my symptoms. I feel like I have given up hope and I literally don’t feel like a person anymore. I pray that God will help the doctors figure it out. My husband and daughter try and help me to stay positive but this is definitely taking a toll on all of us.

@@8891Raquel I am really sorry you are going through that. I wonder why they confirmed that you have acid reflux after the biopsies.. Usually they can tell if you have been suffering from reflux from just the endoscopy itself. They can tell if the lining of the esophagus has been damaged. The symptoms you are experiencing sound like reflux for sure. I myself a couple of nights ago felty like I was choking and felt like it was hard to breathe but I knew it was my gerd symptoms. They are every scary. So trust me you are not alone. Don't give up hope! I am here for you. Have you try raising your bed a couple of feet or tried a wedge pillow?? I think will help you out at night. Also, try stomach pull downs. Did they mention anything about a hiatal hernia from your endoscopy?

Thank you for all of your help. Yes I sleep elevated and don’t eat three hours before going to bed. I don’t really have problems with reflex at night. It’s more just during the day I constantly even when I don’t eat, I feel like there is always something stuck in my throat. The feeling just never goes away. And I can’t do anything at all anymore without getting out of breath super fast. And when I eat it’s like a choice. I can either breathe or eat and not be able to breathe for a few hours. It’s insane. Literally this just all appeared out of no where. I have also been tested for Coronavirus like 3 times and they all came back negative. Did your Gerds just come out of the blue or had you been having symptoms? If you don’t mind me asking. It’s crazy because I’ve also never had any issues drinking or eating anything in my entire life. And it wasn’t until I got on my acid reflex medicine that now I have symptoms of acid reflex. I don’t know this has been an insane couple of months. Thank you so much for all of your help. I don’t know anyone personally who has ever been diagnosed with or who has ever had Gerds so it is hard to get advice or relate to other people. Sorry, to answer your question they said they didn’t see a hernia of any kind and my Gastroenterologists just said when they did the endoscopy the only thing she noticed was that my esophagus was a little irritated.

True, no longer do I have a acid reflux, but now I can no longer swallow in a normal fashion. I have lost part of my appetite and the pure enjoyment of just eating a regular meal is a thing of the past. My recommendation, simply avoid surgery at all cost.

I had GERD since sometime in the early 90's after a surgery on my vocal cords. Since this summer (August 2020) I've had heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, lethargy. My Dr did some blood work it turned out to be my thyroid was way high. In my mind I kept saying something more isn't right.
I had no idea these symptoms were also related to GERD. For years I would swallow food and it would go up my nose & the acid would come out my nose. There are times I choke on my own saliva or throw-up. The GI Dr is actually concerned about my condition. Now after watching this I'm concerned, too. 😳 You're in my prayers. Has anyone else had this happen, where for some reason they, well, frankly cut you open? Its been quite the ordeal. I feel like I have an alien in my body. It feels like someone is grabbing my stomach in a tight fist. Anyway, I dont want to scare you either but I'm with Carlos, do a lot of research and ask questions until they are answered fully by your surgeon. Because I started experiencing shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, because of reflux and when they did the endoscopy all they saw was a “small” hiatal hernia.
