    2 YEARS POST OP UPDATE:
Hi Everyone, I haven't posted a video in a long time but I've had many
requests from people asking how I feel now.
My surgery was a success and has given me my life back. I feel wonderful
and haven't had any issues with my hernia or GERD.
-I can throw up, no issues
-I can weight train and exercise. I just personally don't do any pull
ups to not put strain on the wrap but I do other abdominal exercises.
You can risk it but this is just my preference.
-I can burp no issues and with no baby barf
-I haven't had any children yet so I can't say I know if pregnancy will
impact the wrap or not but I've heard a mix of experiences.
-My stomach capacity is much more normal now after 2 years. I consume
between 1500-2000 cal a day no issues. If I eat too MUCH then I will
feel pressure on my wrap and then I'm uncomfortable for a short bit but
    it goes away.

Hello! I didn't really take any vitamin supplements. I wasn't deficient in anything and got what I needed from whole food ingredients. I stuck to making a lot of blended soups, jello, pudding, broth. I'd boil veggies and stay away from sugar, dairy, and bread for a while. I chose to have canned chicken because it was already shredded and easy to consume. Or I'd choose to do ground meat instead of steaks. As I healed and inflammation went down, I incorporated normal foods again (whole bread, steak, etc). I eat a well balanced diet now, no issues.

Thank you for these videos. I have terrible acid reflux for the past 6 years and I have to take Pepcid max strength twice a day or else it feels like I’m dying from the acid pain. Even when I take the medication regularly and on time, a lot of the time I still get acid reflux throughout the day and need to take tums or pepto. Sometimes nothing helps it’s so bad and I’m just in pain all day. I’m considering getting this done.

You take care of it Jesse? I feel the same way most days, but I also get occasional bloating and sometimes nauseau. I'm also taking Pepcid Max. It's not enough. I was taking PPIs for years before and that helps more but I heard long term does some damage.

@@realgold8290 I managed to wean myself off all my medications except my omeprazole 40mg (taken daily). Now I am able to eat almost anything (except spicy foods, although I seem to do well with barely spicy foods and I limit how much chocolate I eat. I’m hoping it never gets as bad as it was again. I think what helped me the most is that I took probiotics for a while, then I regularly drink “throat coat tea” (that’s the actual name of the tea), and I eat a lot of noosa yogurt lol. Atm though through most days, I feel great now. I tried stopping the omeprazole too but come about day 3 I was in really bad shape. I was taking omeprazole 40mg, and a maximum strength Pepcid (twice a day) but that made me feel terrible like my food wasn’t even digesting and instead was rotting in me. I’m very happy I’m down to just omeprazole. I’m not sure about everyone but for me, it seems like I was lacking the layer of mucus on my throat that protects against the splashing acid, so when I drink that tea (like once or twice a day), eat a spoonful of honey or two throughout the day, and eat yogurt, it seems to keep that protected layer and helps me be ok with all other foods.

Thank you for discussing some of the common questions we have in regards to this surgery. My question that I can't get an answer to is WHY you can't vomit, why you can't burp and why is there increase in flautunce. I had my surgery a year ago and felt so much better immediately. But now that I've started abusing what food I eat I do not feel as healthy. But I have IBS and need to really watch my diet so nothing relates to the surgery. I'm so glad I had it. But I still have the why questions. Does that happen because of surgery

    • @alissachristine250
      @alissachristine250  4 роки тому +4

With a fundoplication they wrap it so tight that I've heard with throwing up it's like throwing up through a straw because that space is now much smaller. I've not had a reason to throw up since having surgery so I may be able to just hasn't occurred. I've heard of people puking just fine but your chest just hurts more then usual after. You wouldn't want to do it right after surgery either it could impact the healing process of the wrap. The gas issue for me got better after a few months, especially once I could burp again around the 6 month mark. But if you can't burp, gas has to leave the body another way - que more gas. I think people don't realize how often they would do small burbs throughout the day before surgery. It's just not something people think about.

samuelt09 hi! I hope your surgery goes well! Most swelling went down by week three. You might have bloating due to gas getting trapped but that passes. Don’t get too excited to eat food just because the doctor says you can move onto soft foods. Start in SMALL qtys. It can get stuck and it’s very uncomfortable if so but it does pass.

Will you do a video or comment on what kind of diet you had to be on after the procedure, please? I got diagnosed with a hiatal hernia back in 2001. My gastroenterologist suggested way back then that I have the same operation. I chose not to because I'd just went through 3 major hand surgeries due to a work related injury. Then I lost my insurance in 2004, I never signed up for Obamacare and just got insurance back in 2016. It's only gotten worse. Sometimes I'll have severe acid reflux for 5 days straight while taking Zantac, Prilosec and Mylanta. I am terrified of what my esophagus must look like and wonder how many ulcers I may have considering I've dealt with this for almost 2 decades. I wake up at night sometimes choking on acid/food that I ate 6 hours prior to laying down. Also, did they use mesh in your surgery? Here on the East coast (NC), mesh has caused a ton of problems. I am scheduled to have this procedure on November. I am not overweight, in good health, normal BP but my weight does fluctuate more than most people. Like, I could lose 10 pounds on the weekend by accident.

    • @alissachristine250

Tommy Dozier Hi Tommy! After surgery for the first few weeks you are on a strict liquid diet. You can’t really get anything done of real food anyways and it’s painful to try so it was: tomatoe soup, broth, juices, electrolyte water, tea. I would buy like ham and pea soup and blend it down to a liquid to consume. Moved to a soft food diet. Pasta. Rice. Boiled veggies. Strangely eggs were difficult to eat for a while. But after 4-8 weeks I have a normal diet. I eat whatever I want. Tomatoes. Hot sauce. Coffee. Alcohol. Steak. You name it I can have it no issues. My esophagus sphincter wasn’t closing. Partly due to my hernia. I also found I have a genetic condition called Dysautonomia. I had issues with my pyloric sphincter when I was a baby and it makes sense for why my esophagus sphincter wouldn’t shut.
If you have the insurance I’d recommend the procedure. You’ll get your life back. I felt the surgery was worth the risk. My grandpa died of esophaguses cancer and I watched a friend of mines mother go the same way. If this surgery can help you I’d do it. Or at least explore similar options : Linx. tif.
They never used a mesh on me. And I don’t know if a mesh is common for a Fundoplication. I know years ago a mesh was common but I think they have gotten better. They use your own stomach to wrap around the esophagus. They stitched up my hernia. Maybe for larger hernias they have to use a mesh.
If you are on Facebook there is a Nissen Fundoplication group. They have a lot of information. And you can ask people with similar experiences.

I had the NIssan 9 months ago exactly. For 10 days i have had pain and like a burning sensation horrible feeling. Trying to figure out if it is food related or anything else like lifting(Im a plumber).
Christmas I had it for a while too I was eating cakes and pies and sweet things. Recently was my birthday and yes sweet things again. I wondering. I had my semi annual cat scan for a tumor they removed in my stomach in Aug 2018 doctor says all looks good there and the Nissan looked in tact too.
I don't think its heartburn. An endoscopy showed (nov 2020) redness and inflammation in the stomach that they were not concerned about so I am wondering if any of you had similar issues with burning or irritation months after the Nissan.
Well thanks for your video great update!

    • @alissachristine250
      @alissachristine250  3 роки тому

Have you ever looked into gastritis? I know it can be painful and typically diet related. I'd maybe look into an anti-inflammatory diet for a little to see if that helps at all. I haven't had any burning sensation in the form of acid reflux but I have had normal heart burn from spicy food. The only time I've had issues of feeling uncomfortable has mainly been if I eat too much too fast. I get extra bloated and it's painful and tight on the wrap. Sticking to smaller meals is ideal and puts less pressure on the wrap. After all, your stomach is now smaller in size. Over time it will expand and you can eat more normal sized meals but everyone has a different experience.

The upper part of the stomach is called a Fundus. Doctors will go on surgically to utilize that portion to do a make the esophagus sphincter tighter. In my case, my ES wouldn’t shut. Ever. So they utilized the wrap for this. Your actual stomach organ becomes smaller because of the surgery initially but over time it can stretch back out to relatively normal size. I’m two years post surgery can can definitely eat a full meal vs the first year post Surgery I because full very easily and had to stick to more smaller meals.

@@zinthiahernandez9582 I'm 5 weeks post surgery now. I'm doing very well. I've had some aching in my lower abdomen, but the doctor said it's from scar tissue forming. It's improved with ice. No problems eating at all. I've finally gotten most of my energy back. I highly recommend this surgery. I haven't had any heartburn or reflux at all.

Hollie Ayres thank you for replying. Prior surgery, did you suffer from stomach bloating ? And if so, did surgery help bloating go away. They say my bloating is from gerd . My bloating pain is mainly in the middle upper abdomen

Hi! At first, consuming a large meal was difficult, now it's better then it was. I try to stick to smaller meals throughout the day. If I eat too much I feel pressure on my wrap for about 30 mins and it's pretty uncomfortable and you feel bloated too. So I try to stay away from that. I have no issues swallowing as time went on in the healing process. Some days I forget I even had it done :)

You are very helpful I have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia stage 3 oesophagitis and multiple polyps which shook me because I have always eat healthy etc etc did you have stomach polyps as they say medication can cause them they took 2xs biopsy that came back non cancerous but im still not happy with the way I feel I'm on 40mg omoprezole once a day but don't wish to take them but at this moment in time I have no choice I have to heal my oesophagitis up the pain was horrendous but now I don't the best thing to do surgery had got to be my best option life is miserable for now but would be much worse without omoprezole your videos are positive thank you 💜

I never had polyps but they did take a biopsy my first endoscopy to check for cancer. My grandfather died from esophagus cancer so we wanted to rule it out. My hernia was found during my second endoscopy and at that point medication never worked for me. After my procedure my surgeon told me my esophagus sphincter wasn't closing at all, just stayed open. So no matter the medication nothing would have worked for me unless I got the surgery. My own doctor didn't think I was a good candidate for the procedure but I didn't feel like he had my best intentions at heart.I let the surgeon be my second opinion and I was glad to just even start the conversation with them.

how long did it take for your stomach capacity to normalize? i had surgery 3 days ago and i'm full so fast. I saw in your comment that after 2 years its normal but will I have to wait that long? I do bodybuilding and sometimes I try to eat to grow, so I am a bit worried I won't be able to eat high amounts of foods anymore.

Different for everyone. I still eat smaller portions but much more normal then just post surgery. I’d say a few months to a year.

Hi. I'm 4 months out. My only major lingering issue is being waaaay bloated and constipated. I'm not sure if the constipation causes the bloating. When does this go away? I feel I look pregnant some days.

Hi Delle! I used a gentle laxative tea as needed. I liked smooth move. It’s at most stores. Also I’d try magnesium supplements if not drinking the tea, lots and lots of water, and making sure to get enough fiber in your diet. I stayed away from more gas producing foods and dairy. This helped a lot but every person is different!
