Why Some Men Can't Grow Beards

- We asked a dermatologist to explain the scientific reasons that some men aren't able to grow thick, dense facial hair. Dr. Jennifer Chwalek is a Board Certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York. Chwalek explained that an inability to grow thick facial hair is not directly related to low levels of testosterone. Facial hair growth is largely determined by genetics, which can determine the number of hair follicles a person has, as well as how the follicles react to a byproduct of testosterone known as dihydrotestosterone.

Following is a transcript of the video:
Narrator: Look at that beard. The density. The thickness. It's what a beard is supposed to be! Not this. This is my beard, if you even want to call it a beard. This footage was taken after I let it grow for two weeks. Two weeks! It's thin, patchy, and in some spots there's no hair at all. Sad. But let's look at this one again. This is Kevin. We're around the same age, both Caucasian males of Irish descent. You could say we have a lot in common, except in the facial hair department. So, I asked a dermatologist about why he's able to grow a beard and I'm not.
Dr. Jennifer Chwalek: It's based on genetics as well as hormones. Some men, you know, have more hair follicles, so they can grow denser, coarser beards than others. Testosterone gets converted in the hair follicle to a more potent form called dihydrotestosterone. Some hair follicles have receptors on them that are very sensitive to this higher form of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and that will stimulate hair growth.
Graham Flanagan: How would you characterize my facial hair?
Dr. Chwalek: I'd say it's like, sparse, and you have light-colored hair, so it doesn't show up quite as much.
Flanagan: I can't really grow a great beard. It's been a problem. I want one. I wanna look like my colleague, Kevin. I mean, look at that beard. It is just glorious. Why can't I grow a beard like Kevin?
Dr. Chwalek: Well, Kevin has some good hair genes, so because of that, the hair follicles on his face are more sensitive to the effects of a form of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone which can help to stimulate thicker, coarser, longer hair growth in some areas of the body like the beard area.
Narrator: Beards and facial hair have long been associated with masculinity and virility. I began to wonder if my inability to grow thick facial hair like Kevin makes me less of a man.
Flanagan: Does the fact that I can't grow a beard, does it make mean that I have low testosterone?
Dr. Chwalek: No. Men who can't grow a beard or have patchy beards usually have normal testosterone levels. It isn't a reflection of having low testosterone or being deficient in testosterone.
Flanagan: So, you can still be virile -
Dr. Chwalek: Right.
Flanagan: And grow a crappy beard like this?
Dr. Chwalek: Yes.
Flanagan: Okay, good.
Narrator: And in fact, there are some ways to increase the chances of growing facial hair, but shaving more often isn't one of them.
Dr. Chwalek: So, the idea that shaving can impact hair growth is actually a myth. When you're shaving, you're just cutting the hair off at the surface of the skin, and what's controlling the hair growth is really occurring deeper in the skin. So, it shouldn't have any impact on how quickly the hair grows, or how dense the hair grows. People have tried topical Rogaine or Minoxidil. These things may stimulate a little hair growth, but assuming it's due to genetics, then you're kind of stuck with what you have.
Flanagan: It's all about the sensitivity of the hair follicles and how they interact with this -
Dr. Chwalek: Dihydrotestosterone or androgens in the blood.
Flanagan: So, you're saying that, that his hair follicles are "sensitive."
Dr. Chwalek: Yes.
Flanagan: See, mine aren't.
Dr. Chwalek: Right.
Flanagan: They aren't sensitive. They're like rocks. They have no sensitivity at all. Okay, so I win that!
Dr. Chwalek: Right.

I thank her for being an expert on this and experienced to the extent that she has come across cases of people who use Rogaine (Minoxidil ingredient) and still haven't grown enough hairs to make a difference. I've tried it for 2-3 years and it didn't work. She sets that record straight.
Damn actually didn't know that. I had a very patchy beard and by using minox for 3 months I basically got a full beard and assumed it works for everyone but then again I was 18 at the time
@@seyfff Hey Seyf thanks for your reply. I don't know if I'm being too cynical or not but a Facebook Beard growth group page that uses Minox that I was on had people near 18 or in their early to mid 20s using it and saying they had good results but again I find it questionable if Minox made a difference at all or even little considering men's hormones at that age area may still be growing more and more hairs too as time goes by and are still developing those hairs regardless of Minox.
But still if you only took 3 months with Minox then that's rather quick to get a full beard, so maybe it worked for you. I guess it depends on how succesfully you were growing a beard before Minox, maybe your use of it got results or maybe your hormones kicked in, or you would have gotten it some time later without Minox.
As for me, I tried it when I was in my late 40s. No real change, if it was it was a tiny amount like 1% if that. (Noticed around 10 new hairs I think on my moustache).
@@JasonPerrymanyou should try again. I didn’t have anything for 24 years. After using it for a couple months to a year, I have a beard now.
I started using minoxidil when I was 32 or 33.
Where before I could only grow a weak mustache and a somewhat decent beard right under my chin and nowhere else, I now have growth on my jaw all the way to the sideburns.
Now, it’s still far from dense and really not much of a beard anyway, but I certainly notice the difference.
Unfortunately I guess my hair follicles capped their potential at that and I’ll never have a full, dense beard.
I only got this recommended because I can't grow a beard 😐

It's important for anyone who wants to grow one to know that there's always an awkward stage for the first few months, and your beard growth still has time to develop up until your 30s. So if you're in early adulthood and can't grow one too well, there's a chance you might be able to try again with much better success a few years from now.
Stick through the awkward period though. If you have some patches, especially the ones I do which seem common which are on the sides of my goatee, you can comb over them pretty well after your beard is a decent length, it's just a waiting game.
True, mine didn't start developing until I turned 28 which was a year ago and Its still filling out to this day. Before then I couldn't grow a beard on the sides of my face. I was always stuck with a goatee situation.

Just grow it out for 2-3 months and I guarantee you’ll be glad you did.
I totally agree. Two weeks is nowhere enough to draw any conclusions. I look about the same two weeks after shaving. It takes me more like two months to develop a decent beard.

I've no clue how this happened as I was told no one in my extended family was like that, but honestly love how vibrant it looks so far. Well worth the wait lol
Here in most Southeast Asian countries tho same with Japan, Korea, and China, having a beard is not really that much of a thing, having no beard is actually the "it" thing, I think how this is perceived just depends on the culture.
sideburns seem to be more of a "thing" in those countries.
Okey.

Guys it also depends upon your hormones. If your testosterone is high its effects wud be more facial hair and also muscular growth. And those who have less testosterone but still have a beard their genetics play a role in it. So you can actually grow some more facial hair by working out and most importantly improving your lifestyle.
cap
So is there a way to make your facial hair more sensitive.
You don't have a crappy beard and you've got a real strong moustache. 2 weeks isn't long, give it a few months. Kevin's beard is many months maybe even years old.
Exactly, my beard took a few months to grow, and it took about a year and a half for the mustache and beard to connect, as the follicles in that part of my face are weakest. However, now I have a very full beard, and I've never been clean-shaven since. Going on 7 years, baby!
Yoza
I have a long beard and already started shaving at 12 years old, and when I'm fully shaved a little more than a month is enough for me to grow a beard like Kevin's.
@@J0ni0 hair grows at about 1/2 an inch per month. You might grow full cover but it won't be long like Kevin's in a month.
I don't think so, Kevins beard on me is a 3 week beard, if I go over a month i legit look like a hispanic gandalf

I’m a 20 year old male and still have no facial hair. Maybe I will get lucky at 25 and actually grow one.
Hey i have a slow growing beard too here are some tips to help yours based on my experience one don't shave or fully cut your beard only trim it back when spots that grow faster become unmanageable and mess with the eveness of the beard also never cut it shorter than you previously had it, two once it becomes long enough to groom groom it even if it doesn't look like you need to if your beard is anything like mine if you don't take care of it it will become puffy and hard to take care of later do it frequently and it will train the hair down and make it easier to maintain in the longrun, three once the hair is full enough look how your hair reacts to products beard hair is not the same as head hair beard oils beard balms they'll be your best friend if you have a naturally dry and coarse beard and similar to the grooming the sooner you do it the less it'll be a problem in the future. Now, simply put your beard will take a while to grow out, but it will grow out given the opportunity. This is not good advice if your beard doesn't start to fill out early on if you can only grow a couple hairs here and there it probably won't grow out magically
I have better advice. Use a derma pen or roller on your face a couple times a week, then use minoxidil and castor oil after it. I have seen people fill in bald spots and grow a full beard within a year doing this.
At least you have *hair*
Kevin has too though...
*BALD*
I'm so sad for you I know you're bald honestly I don't know how that feels
Actually Kevin has a lot better (more) hair.
Lol you are bald

Become an ancient Asian sage
It bothers me that I see Kim jong un in so many of the video comment sections I watch
Kim, that's because East Asians don't have the genetics to grow a beard on the face. It's only where the sun doesn't shine.
Give it time for ones who wants to grow a beard if it doesn't happen in your 20s maybe your late 30s it's all genetics your bodies role.
Mam minoxidil did a huge change to my beard growth, like many story telling on UA-cam’s. With proper usage, use of some beard oil and stuff it works. For me it was genetic, my Dad had huge patch on his beard. So yeah give it a try guy, look for as much info you can get and stay consistent

I've always wanted to go a real long time (like 4 months) without shaving just to really see the full extent of how much I can't grow a beard, but I'd be too embarrassed to walk around like that in daily life.
If you dont want to be bothered at all with your beard and fix your neckline, cheek hair and all that , dont grow it you re gonna look like a homeless. Beard requires maintenance to look good or else if you dont know much about trimming then just stick to normal beard not very long
Been working on mine for a year or so now.

I like how the narrator who’s incapable of growing a beard just constantly stares into the camera as if he’s having an existential crisis while Kevin is just calmly nodding his head like he knows what’s up
I don't know shaving is a myth or not but I am 19 years old roughly 2 years ago I started working in a field where one of the rules was to shave everyday, I had close to no beard in the beginning and once I shave I didn't had to shave for 3-4 days because my beard growth was very slow but after 4-5 months my beard growth increased and I had to shave everyday and after 1 year during vacation I got a beard with some patches but it was thick and after 2 years now I get a full thick beard, I don't know it is because of shaving or because of my genetics but I have observed that after I started shaving my beard started growing quickly.
How often did you shaved your beard?
I’ve lived with a chin strap for the past 6 years I’m 20 now and I had the exact same question, cos if my beard isn’t as thick or bushy as other lads my age does this mean I lack in testosterone levels ? Great knowledge on this topic 👍🏼

Good. There are so many scams. This one is actually honest for once. If you can't grow a beard, you can't throw money at it. Just learn to live with it, and don't get taken advantage of because of your insecurities.
Fap a lot. That grows your hair. Jk thats bad for you
@Bubu567 You can throw money at it. You can get a beard transplant or even use minoxidil on your face.
my dad has a beard, my uncles on both mother and father side has beards, both my grandfathers have beards, i don't have a mustache, nor a deep voice i'm completely bald on my face and have horrible acne. i'm constantly tired, my body hurts all the damn it feels sore all the time. is there any solution to this? or am i stuck living in a crappy body with no way to change it
Well, there are many reasons. My problem was that i always shaved my face hair every 3 days total and doing much sports since i can think of. So i gave my body the signal you need testo for bones, muscles and so on but not for DHT to get a beard.
Since i dont shave anymore my facial hair growth rise exponentially. I had much less than you especially the sides and at the throat (many areas with not one hair). Now i wont shave for atleast one year and i dont care what other think or say.
