Having a patchy beard or beard patches is a very frustrating thing, but sometimes you are your own worst enemy. A beard takes time to come in and what you have after a couple days of growth can be completely different than a few months of growth.
The reason is that beards grow in at different speeds and when you give a beard enough time to grow properly those patchy areas will fill in. That being said, there are some beards that simply will never fill in - no matter the amount of time you give it. For those people the best strategy is to keep your facial hair short or scruffy. Many celebrities keep this look like Johnny Depp and James Franco. There is no shame in a beard that doesn't fill in fully. The shame is trying to be someone who you aren't. Celebrate your genetics and handle it to the best of your ability.
The third kind of patchy beards are those guys who have full, dense beards but find the smallest imperfection and assume it's a shit beard. The reality is their expectations are too high. Only a small percentage of men are able to grow a completely full and dense beard. It's best to try growing out your beard before you go around telling everyone that your beard is patchy. You only know if you grow. - Навчання та стиль

I never bothered trying to grow my beard because of the patchiness I would see. It was very discouraging, but after seeing this video I committed to growing my beard I just finished week 4 and my patches are slowly filling in or be covered. I'm pleased with the results so far and look forward to seeing how to looks in 2-3 months from now. thanks for the video it inspired me to be patient and you're totally right we are our own worst critic.

Your absolutely right about letting your beard grow out before convincing yourself you have a patchy beard. A friend of mine always wanted a full big beard but would get discouraged with the patchiness that he would shave it off. But then someone told him to just let it grow and now he has one of sickest beards I've seen around.
Growing a beard for the last two weeks and was contemplating shaving. But after listening to the bearded kermit I'm keeping it!!
That made me choke on my food😂😂😂😂😂😘
Yeah, those are great tips. Another one is to keep the (patchy) beard at stubble length (2-3mm) for a longer period of time, up until the point where the slow growing hairs have made their way out. Then let it grow out and set your clippers to +1mm every time you're trimming your beard, until you have reached your desired length. Patience is key, still.
Well thats what I call a good tip my friend. Will try it!

I know this is a few years old but thank you. I do have a patchy beard (early, about a month and a half of growth) but I love it. For the first time in my adult life I’m able to grow my hair without someone telling me to shave. I can’t wait to see what it looks like at 4 months. Thank you for the advice and for being uplifting about the patchy beard crew.
How’s it look now?
How is it now, man
I have had a beard on and off since college and I'm committed to never going clean shaven and rocking the full beard. These beardbrand videos have been awesome.
This is good advice. Patchy beards often fill in by themselves as the whiskers grow. This was certainly the case with mine.
Thanks for the compliment! I also have a fairly good tummy, too!

Sir, I have a question and maybe you can give me a hand... I've grown a full beard but my moustache seems to grow thicker/darker at the sides that in the centre and I'd like to fix that , any suggestion from your experience?

@beardbrand you guys are helping me more then you'll ever know, keep up the awesome work gentleman !
I've always had a sparse growth. So I just kept a lil on the chin. Started watching this guy about 6 months ago, gave my genetics a shot. I'm actually impressed. People around me treat me differently, sad in a way; but it is what it is. Now for the stache.. thats what sets them apart. Thanks for the videos. As a new barber, you've given me a wealth of knowledge that I've been able to pass on to my clients. ~Rickie
Really glad you've been enjoying the videos, Rickie. And hey, best of luck in your new journey as a barber!
- Jack
People treat you differently after you grew your beard as in you get more respect?
I have been growing my beard for 5 years, since I was 19. Every year it got better and better, despite me not using beard products (didn't itch me at all). Yes, it wasn't thick and full when I started, so I simply kept it short. Now I have a kickass chin warmer ;). It's more than a goatee, but less than a full beard, because I'd always shave the sideburns (now starting to grow them out), so the hair just follows the jawline. But it feels badass, especially since I don't tame the hedge as some bearded brothers do. The hair is wavy, sometimes curly, but hey, it looks THICK. Besides, I work outside a lot, and facial hair can be quite useful in below freezing temperatures. Inuit men would grow mustaches to help prevent frostbite around the mouth. A rugged beard looks AWESOME if you've been out skiing, snowshoeing, or hiking when it snows. All that snow collects in the hedge and gives you an epic frosty beard :D. Finally, for those who are lamenting about their beard, or get beard envy a lot, hear this: There are hundreds of thousands of guys out there with less facial hair, many of whom either don't have optimal genetics, or they just have peach-fuzz because they're still young. You can bet that they will want facial hair half as good as yours. So grow what you've got, be patient, and most importantly, TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR BEARD :^{D
My beard is 2 weeks old today and I am quite happy with the progress. Only thing letting it down is its not as dense at the sides. Someone did comment on it and it's made me a bit more self conscious of it. Video has given me the confidence that I should stick with it and hopefully the sides will fill in a bit more. Thanks.
Wow, this was a life-changing video!!! Now I can live the rest of my life in joy and happiness.
My way of dealing with a patchy beard is to let it grow out. The spots that have hair will usually fill in those spots that the hair might not grow as well.
No, my cheek doesn't fill
Eric, Thank you for this valuable information. Just what the doctor needed to hear. I'm into week 4 of a Yeard and looking patchy in the cheek area and under the lower lip down to the chin. I hope it fills out by month 3 or 4. Growing a bead is a true lesson in patience. I am determined to succeed.
Update? How’s the yeard coming in?
Any update yet....

Beardbrand Actually, I've been looking at quite a few of your tips and cautionary videos, and I've found them to be quite helpful. I had a few good solid inches growing off of my face a few months back, but when I went from my "Jesus hair and beard combo" to a cleaner look (time for a change, kind of thing), I've found it difficult to manage a shorter style in the facial hair department. I'm growing it back out now, but my oldest brother brother got the beard genes out of the three of us. Now, I'm rubbing beard balm into it and brushing it daily to help.
How you doin bro

I was just gunna ask too lol
Yo! Did it work?
Hey man, did it work?
Hey sorry guys I'm just seeing these responses now, I like the way my beard is looking right now it's definitely worth it. One thing I do is trim the hairs near my jawline every once in a while because it grows faster and thicker than the cheek hairs. After a few trims around the jaw area the cheek hairs started catching up and it's now looking more evened out/denser overall.

What do you think about lightly trimming it as more follicles grow in? When I try to grow my beard my hairs get long but not very full. Do you think it's okay to trim a few times so it will look good while waiting for it to get more full? Or just let it all come in at once...

I've tried letting my facial air grow in, and I experience a problem I see in quite a few Asian (or more specifically, Half-Asian) people like me. Each hair grows quite far apart. It's not the usual type of patching, where there are areas that are denser than others, but it is a uniform lack of density. I've tried growing it out for ~2 months, and the spaces didn't even start to fill in. I tried trimming it to keep it neat while not touching the follicles that may have needed more time to grow in, but that did not work either. What are your suggestions for either fixing or masking this problem. I may be over exaggerating, my expectations may be too high, I honestly do not know.

I was about to give up and shave but then I saw this! Now I’m gonna give it another 2 months
I watched this video back in August last year. Since then I've been trying to grow a beard. I always thought I had a extremely patchy beard (Johnny Depp-ish so to speak). Ever since I committed to growing a beard it came in a lot fuller, I won't even consider myself a patchy beard guy anymore. It's still not as thick as I want it to be, but I'm only 22, so I know it will come in thicker with the years.
So if you're in doubt about growing a beard, give it a try, just push through that awkward stage and keep on growing.
