I played in an SFV tournament not long after the game came out, and I didn't even have the game yet, but I lost to a guy who not only play drunk, but even practiced drunk.
Thanks so much for this video, it's so useful. Honestly I felt like I never wanted to play the game again after losing 5 in a row last night. But I think I'm spending way too long perfecting long combo's in training and not nearly enough time with the basics. Had a look at my replays and it's knowing when to block and when to tech a throw on wake-up that is my massive weakness. So that's going to be the focus of my training now! Just wish I was awake when you stream!
This video is a testament to your love for the game. You have the right mindset. It is simply really fun to play, win or lose. A lot of people do not get that. So many people rage quit because they are losing. They totally miss the whole point in playing. When you lose you actually learn and become better.
"We go in Raw" VesperArcade 2016. In all srsness, great vid. I can think of a person or two I'll be forwarding this to who will be able to benefit greatly from this :).
This Video is exactly what I needed. I'm trying to learn to fast and you were pretty much me. I finally made it to Silver today but as of now I'm no longer focusing on league points.
Great video Vesper. I myself have always wanted to learn how to play SF and I thought pushing myself was gonna be the fastest way and I always got frustrated for not learning fast enough. But looking at it from this perspective now I know that its part of the process and that I should look at losing matches as a learning experience and working at learning the game little by little would be a very rewarding feeling at the end. Thank you very much for this video I really needed to hear this.
Im living in a little island called " Reunion island " i started play street fighter 1 year ago ! i dont have a lot of people to play with here and im not very good but ! these videos really helps me ! you are a very good senseï ! MERCI ! And sorry for my english !
This video spoke to my effin soul tonight man! I just had an awful practice session working on some massive combos. I went into one, literally just one casual match and lost tonight after because my mind was clouded with info.
I just bought SF5 and a fight stick on Wednesday. I occasionally watched SF5 and other fighting games on Twitch, never been a fan of fighters, but i always felt an urge to try it. So I did. I decided to play only Ryu for now. Started with Survival mode. Did the trials (still can't do Ryu's #10). Played ranked, got matched against a level 250 guy with 700 LP. Could barely play the game. Half my casual matches are the same. I've won about 5 out of 20 matches. I'm learning a lot but it's very frustrating to play like that. But your videos have helped me.
I feel your pain. I've had SF5 for about a month. I use Cammy. I can't do her #9 on trials, but I figured I know enough to go online. I win like 30% of my matches. My LP fluctuates between 600-1000. I have good days where I league up, and then have random bad days that knock me way down. It's very frustrating not to have consistency. Sometimes I fight people on my level and it's fun. Most the time however, I get matched with people a few levels above and I get rocked.
I've needed to watch a video like this for so long. Yeah I can be very hard on myself sometimes. I recently started playing Chun Li. And it was horrible. I'd get massacred every single time. One of the worst experiences I've had in fighting games. But eventually I started getting better. Now I can do do more combos now and I've started winning more. What I didn't expect was actually learning a lot from Bronze Players. That amazed me. And it is because my Chun is/was at that level when I started. When I switch to Cammy ( my main ) it's hunting season. But playing lower ranked players gave me the breathing space to make mistakes with her. Now I have to start learning the harder combos and the mix ups. It was so bad that I wanted to drop the character. So glad that I didn't. She's too much fun. And because she's so different from Cammy, I am learning many more aspects of the game. Which helps overall to improve my style.
Nice video.. I think this concept in general can really help motivate people to keep at it. I know I have a motivation issue with SF, as well. I grew up playing fighting games but started to get back into them on a serious note during SSF4/USF4 but it was just way too frustrating to try and learn 4 at that point so I said to myself when 5 comes out I'm gunna' go serious and hard with it. I played all the betas, but not as much as I should've but regardless. I experimented around with some characters and then settled on Mika and I had around 300lp and lost it all with her down to about 63 or so then climbed my way up to about 1300 before The Division came out and I was really hyped for that game so I started playing that. Now I'm coming back and I have it in my head that Mika is just shit and I don't wanna play her anymore but I really do love her. A big problem with me is that I know wayyy more than I can put into practice, I understand frame traps, frame data, meaties, option selects, etc.. but when I sit down to play, because I don't have the muscle memory, I get frustrated because I just know in my heart I should be beating these people I'm losing to and that gets frustrating. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me and I think maybe doing a series of videos for people that have watched and studied a lot but are having trouble applying it might help a lot of people out. I know what the problem is and that it just takes time but it's frustrating knowing you know what to do but are just getting beat. Sorry for the long post.
i just started playing street fighter and im definitely understanding everything your saying. i think my biggest issue is blocking and learning when to attack
i went through the same thing with karin except i was losing because i strayed from my rush down style to a defensive poking style. i watched my replays, mago and smug replays, got a bite to eat and got some sleep. reapplied everything i strayed from and things are better now. not easy but better
As a Rashid player I can totally understand what you've been through. I also play him defensively, footsie based. His tools aren't easy to get used to. Knowing the frame data is very important, because I think the optimal way to play him is to know when to rushdown and when to play a solid footsie game. I see a lot of people just pressing with lp mixer but I think it's not the best way, I prefer to do some blockstrings with his lights and use frametraps/moves that pushes him back and forth to really be unpredictible.
+VesperArcade Yep generally it's your best move against characters with long pokes, like Karin ou chun. And it also Crush Counter on the second hit, you can just do a st.hk to follow up or dash forward st.mp>cr.mk>lk.eagle. A lot of his moves makes him move forward a little bit, it's very useful to avoid crossups.
What's up vesper. I think that with learning a new character, it's crucial to start playing with less experienced players to lock down the fundamentals of that new character. Alot of the time, when you play a new char on your main account it demands you to play extremely well. Especially when entering gold and up. I think that when you pick a new character up, it's even beneficial to play cpu to get spacing of certain normals, what the hotbox is like for anti airs. Pretty building confidence. Rather than getting thrown into the deep end. Like you mentioned, don't expect to learn quickly, and that's exactly what you did. You went into ranked playing gold players expecting to keep up when you don't even have the fundamentals yet.
I really wish the stress of points didn't effect me so much. I wish I could just turn off the display for points so I never actually saw them or my rank ever. I'd probably win more then I bet. I enjoy playing in the arcades without using ID cards for that reason.
Zyx i had the same issue...trust me when n i say I understand. Starting out I would get around 700 the go on a losing streak, get knocked down to 400. What i did to overcome it was when i got around 800 LP i mentally said i don't care if i lose it. I literally went all out and lost alot of LP. But i made it over that mental barrier, now im winning more and still not caring about LP. Ps i made it to the second bronze tier. Focus on the fight, your character, the game mechanics and before you know it you'll be on win streaks more so than losing. Good luck in your ventures dont give up!
my anti air alone got me out of my slump to get me to get into bronze. ever since I got that down. I stayed steadily into bronze instead of the roller coaster
thanks bro for this video first fighting game that I'm seriously trying to learn but it's a pain in the ass. The worst part is that I'm learning how to play zanief and ryu puts me on tilt every time rip my life.
Good video, It's important to balance training mode, playing ranked and watching players. I've fallen into the trap of watching too much which is real frustrating when you 'know' your opponent is doing stupid unsafe stuff and still beating you because, 'why would they do raw whatever at that moment?'. You can convince yourself that you aren't to blame for losing, but it's not really true. Take a step back and evaluate, start fresh.
Yeah, the problem I am running into quite frequently in SFV is that, because the game is much easier now(with the 3F buffer), I can't help but get angry and frustrated at myself when I'm struggling to learn something, or if I'm dropping combos. There's just this feeling that I can't shake, it's a recurring thought that I keep having that goes like this- ''The game is much easier now, so you SHOULD be able to do this!!!''. It's funny how they've made the game much easier now and all it has done is make the learning process waaay more frustrating for me. I get mad at myself for not getting quick results in this ''easy'' game. I spent months learning how to do one Evil Ryu combo in SFIV, and I never got frustrated with it. Maybe I'm just weird like that, though. lol
VesperArcade One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm also learning how to play on an Arcade Stick ATM as well, so that's probably contributing to my frustration. Thanks for the response! :-)
just want to thank you for being such an inspiration. Also wanted to know if I could get your gamer tag so I could challenge you and learn first hand against players like yourself...!?!?
I tried bullet revolver super with guile for about 3 hours a day for a month and was no better at it than after about one week in so have moved to laura lol
I just got into fighting games and this is actually my first one. First fighting game and first time using a stick. I have been following and learning from your videos, and it's very helpful. One question, when I suspect I'm gonna get thrown, do I keep mashing throw to escape? Is that good?
+Sean Kang If you mash and your wrong you will end up leaving yourself open for an attack. You have plenty of time to tech a throw when you see it coming so try getting used to being confident on pressing it once. It will help you in the long run. Thanks for asking.
My biggest problem is I lack the actual real experience playing the game, I know most of the stuff and the theory behind it and I watch matches all the time. The kicker here is I can't find a character I really like. I love the game, but I've yet to really jive with a certain character, so I lack the motivation to really try to get better
Hey Versper so Im also stuck in Bronze, always losing against tick throw spammers. I see them coming but I cant react in time. How do I counter throw happy people other than teching them?
Vesper, can you please make a tutorial on how to play like you did with sf4? I learned a lot from it but this game feels weird to me. Also, I want to direct my friends to you to make it easier for them to buy the game. Those videos you made were amazing
I second this request. I know you're working on the tutorial, but I just can't understand this game. I've learned so much, thanks for taking the time to break this game down.
Hey Vesper, i have one question: I am suffering a serious flow-chart syndrome right now, what can i do to break out of it? I can play all round long solid but suddenly i become mashy and get rekt, forgetting fundamentals, never baiting out DP and always doing meatys... any advice? edit: great video, it gives me so much comfort and hope to get better ^^ thanks for the wise, kind words for us greetings
+Skusioh Hey Skusioh! When I stream you notice I remind myself after every match what I need to work on. You might want to write down what you want to improve on for the day and simply look at it after every match. It will help keep you on track. As simple as this might sound, to break out of a pattern... change it up!
+rdmqwerty Learning normals first, C.HP, S.MK, S.LK. Then anti-airs C.MP, EX Mixer. Then combos S.MP, C.MK xx LK Eagle. Then build on to all 3 examples.
I'm trying to learn Rashid, my problems are: -Anti Airing -Doing unsafe stuff I also feel it is difficult to improve with so many people going ham. It is hard to practice neutral when there is so much jumping.
+EvilJagan (Empire Arcadia) C.MP, S.LK and EX Mixer are your go to anti-airs. If they try to cross you up then jump back HP. You might want to check out my March 11-12th stream archives. That's when the character started working for me.
Man. I was pretty decent at 4. But I'm so butt at 5. Picked up Mika first, then Necalli and now learning cammy. I just don't get this game like others yet. I push buttons at the wrong times, and when I try to defend I get thrown. Lol. Bad decision making all around.
I ignored the video since I am not a rashid player. So, I think the title should be like "beginners: the path to improvement" or something. Personally I try to play Ryu only using normals. It makes hard mode have a whole new meaning.
I'm a ryu player. It seems like it's impossible to deal with Cammy. I just block and pray she doesn't throw me. My counters get countered. Very frustrating to deal with :(
I had problems with her and Birdie, but then I watched top players play against them and how they'd deal with the situations and found that my defense wasn't as good as I thought against those characters. For Cammy pay attention to the distance and the obvious guard low. Record her moves in training mode and find the best way to deal with each. Helped me a lot...^-^ send me your gamer tag
My challenge: I've been a casual Ryu player for years. I'm actually moving away from him because I realized that I'm a decent Ryu player but I want to be a decent Street Fighter player. For example Cr.Mk + Fireball isn't a tool for me. . . it's a crutch and I've come to the conclusion that I rely on it too much. I want to get better at Street Fighter and not just Ryu so for my SF journey I'm trying to move AWAY from that character. That's my challenge now. For me it was not about using Ryu to learn fundamentals it was all about learning Ryu and I want to learn more. "Oh man I'm in a bad situation. . . use Cr.Mk + Fireball. . . what this character can't do that?!? Back to Ryu for me then!"
now i get pissed off when the opponent teleport through the maps on a freaken 5 bar connection! like please vesper, u exactly know what i mean lol u got any tips how to deal with that or should i just wait it out until we get better servers? I used to be UMVC3 and USF4 player and seriously, even in 1 bar connection, never did i see any teleportation ever...
+nathan914c Her Bnb combos are harder than most of the cast due to precise charge timing, hard to win fireball wars cuz she needs to charge, her v trigger is strong but takes some practice to use effectively, her anti-airs are situational. You need to use the right one for the right space or you get blown up super hard. However if you are good with Chun you should be really good since people are saying she's top tier.
6 months of getting to 17-1900 lp then losing 1000. Most frustrating part is I know I'm a LOT better than when I started. Guess everyone else is too or I'm completely delusional lol.
showed this vid to a friend who plays rashid main but is stuck at around 900 LP i think this will help him. and watching Gachikun since he's a neutrul player like my friend.
I can never have that mindset lol, I'm not touching ranked until I feel that im at my best with reaction time, antiairs and combos and spacing and pressure, all that takes me about 2 to 3 hours grinding it out in training mode/survival/battle lounges.
Dont worry bout lp says the guy who wins most of his matches been playing this shit 3 years still no improvement. This is not fun at all but since i have no option but to play online whatelse am i gonna do
@VesperArcade help me out to improve, check my channel i have a few videos. I almost all the time go straigth to Ranked Match, i hate playing Casual because i feel, i dont have to win. Im a competitive player and i love the feeling of Ranked match. Sometimes i go to practice to practice the combo loops and other simple combos. When a hit the Ultra Gold i play Casual to feel the power of the division players and dont loose point, but i still prefer Ranked.
Great video.
how to improve as Rashid
step 1 pick Rashid
step 2 get his theme song
step 3 set it on repeat
step 4 enjoy
step 5 Rashidoooooooo
Rashiiiidoooo
Rashid's theme makes you think you can fly to the heavens, but you can't...
Doobs Look somewhere else.
NEVER PLAY ANGRY, ITS LIKE DRIVING DRUNK. NOTHING GOOD COMES FROM IT. JUST TAKE A BREATHE AND STEP BACK WHEN YOUR RUFFLED. MUCH RESPECT VESPER
I played in an SFV tournament not long after the game came out, and I didn't even have the game yet, but I lost to a guy who not only play drunk, but even practiced drunk.

I don't judge myself until a week has passed. Your right, fighting games take more mental fortitude.
This Video is exactly what I needed. I'm trying to learn to fast and you were pretty much me. I finally made it to Silver today but as of now I'm no longer focusing on league points.

I must have lost over 1000LP today because of tilt. #feelsbadman
This video spoke to my effin soul tonight man! I just had an awful practice session working on some massive combos. I went into one, literally just one casual match and lost tonight after because my mind was clouded with info.

Wow Vesper love hearing you talk bro u made so much sense in this video appreciate what u do bro keep it up 👌🏾
Idk why the algorythm sent this my way but i really needed it. 40 hours in, this is my 1st fighting game.
great video, I appreciate the time you took to make this video.. thank you very much..
Thank you Vesper!
Awesome Vid Vesper thanks man, I'm trying to get pro at this and I'm hitting all sorts of walls but your Tutorials are great reference!!
Nice video!
"for me, lp doesn't mean anything" he says probably 10 times, "so I made a smurf account"
Well said, man.
i just started playing street fighter and im definitely understanding everything your saying. i think my biggest issue is blocking and learning when to attack
Davin Poggy same
This is a great video 👏🏼

Good stuff! Trying to learn Karin and your video helps me to be realistic. And whiskey to relax. :-)
All about that REAL online experience
This Video is 100% True
Dat background, though... Man, I miss Capcom vs SNK!
thanks bro for this video first fighting game that I'm seriously trying to learn but it's a pain in the ass. The worst part is that I'm learning how to play zanief and ryu puts me on tilt every time rip my life.
this was great, just something a little different.
Good video, It's important to balance training mode, playing ranked and watching players. Good stuff Vesper! For anyone who wants to learn frame data on SFV, there's a free app on Android and IOS called VFrames.
Nice, don't have to pay 2.29 for it either.

+SwinnyUK The execution is easier yes, but without focus attacks and ultras the game has to be played more honest as well. Thanks for sharing.
VesperArcade One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm also learning how to play on an Arcade Stick ATM as well, so that's probably contributing to my frustration. Thanks for the response! :-)

+Aaron Smith it was mostly in response to the other guy. I just happened to reply to your comment.
Vesper, did you try watching Alex Valle's Rashid?
+ModerateWhovian Yep. Also Lamer and Richard.
Hey Vesper, i have one question: I am suffering a serious flow-chart syndrome right now, what can i do to break out of it? I can play all round long solid but suddenly i become mashy and get rekt, forgetting fundamentals, never baiting out DP and always doing meatys... any advice?
edit: great video, it gives me so much comfort and hope to get better ^^ thanks for the wise, kind words for us
greetings
+Skusioh Hey Skusioh! When I stream you notice I remind myself after every match what I need to work on. You might want to write down what you want to improve on for the day and simply look at it after every match. It will help keep you on track. As simple as this might sound, to break out of a pattern... change it up!
VesperArcade
Thank you very much for the answer! I'll do that, step by step.
is there a certain training regimen for rashid? like what combos and moves should you learn first? and then what do you learn second?
+rdmqwerty Learning normals first, C.HP, S.MK, S.LK. Then anti-airs C.MP, EX Mixer. Then combos S.MP, C.MK xx LK Eagle. Then build on to all 3 examples.
I'm trying to learn Rashid, my problems are:
-Anti Airing
-Doing unsafe stuff
I also feel it is difficult to improve with so many people going ham.
+ZeroSumJ1 you can't block throws ;) Also don't click attack buttons if you are blocking, it means you aren't blocking!
I ignored the video since I am not a rashid player. So, I think the title should be like "beginners: the path to improvement" or something. Personally I try to play Ryu only using normals. It makes hard mode have a whole new meaning.
br br br aqui.
+KiD NoVA cool. Let's get some matches in Fight ID: freeway230
My challenge:
I've been a casual Ryu player for years.
+Musa Abedin Try setting favorite stage to training stage and search 4-5 connection with "ask" on. So you can check the bars before hand.
I do that lol but what looks like 5 feels like 1 bar -_- i just hope they fix the net codr
Musa Abedin If you're playing on wifi, then get off of it immediately!! It's terrible for fighting games.
justfitz08 I play on PC so like no chance lol
i would like to now whats so hard about chun
+nathan914c Her Bnb combos are harder than most of the cast due to precise charge timing, hard to win fireball wars cuz she needs to charge, her v trigger is strong but takes some practice to use effectively, her anti-airs are situational. You need to use the right one for the right space or you get blown up super hard. However if you are good with Chun you should be really good since people are saying she's top tier.
I avoid ranked i play it only when i get a weekly mission and ive managed to get to 3k
6 months of getting to 17-1900 lp then losing 1000. Most frustrating part is I know I'm a LOT better than when I started. Guess everyone else is too or I'm completely delusional lol.
Omg i was at super silver for a month and i took a week off now im stuck on bronze to rookie???? Wtf im so bad at this game
showed this vid to a friend who plays rashid main but is stuck at around 900 LP i think this will help him. and watching Gachikun since he's a neutrul player like my friend.
I can never have that mindset lol, I'm not touching ranked until I feel that im at my best with reaction time, antiairs and combos and spacing and pressure, all that takes me about 2 to 3 hours grinding it out in training mode/survival/battle lounges.
So i should make a smurf account? Thanks Vesper!
Those people that jump too much get on my nerves, I'm a player that likes to play safe and I think everyone has that mind set...
Dont worry bout lp says the guy who wins most of his matches been playing this shit 3 years still no improvement. This is not fun at all but since i have no option but to play online whatelse am i gonna do
I only started ranking up after like three years i think that's normal
so when learning a new character make a smurf account
No....I was to late....I'm the 422 Like..... Only 2 more away.......
Damn I was happy to get silver and he talks about us like they are completly useless and free. My heart is broken.
