I know singing the praises of Codys design when he's just a guy in a tight suit you can see on a night out nothing interesting going on there like and he famously hated Rufus a very interesting goofy looking character
No kidding. As a Kolin main she is definitely a Great Character design, both visually and animation wise. Her walking animations, her counters, Hail attacks, Air throw, Vanity steps and her Absolute Zero V-Trigger, displays a character that is both grounded and combat oriented blended with the style and grace of an olympic figure skater. Shocking thing is Max clearly forgot that Kolin was the only character that i know of that had a facial redesign that improved on her Story Mode model significantly. Since he likes to complain about Ken so much, as he should, yet Kolin is proof that Ken remaining like that was a Capcom choice that remained unchanged. The only weird thing about Kolin, that is a visual design feature shared across all characters in SF is her unusually large feet and hands that make her look strange in her swimsuit costume. Most SF Women are muscular but Kolin's Physique though more appealing than say Falk is still strange compared to Juri, Chun, Cammy and Mika. Her Nostalgia and Sporty Costumes showcase her thick muscular legs perfectly but as soon as you see her arms uncovered there is a slight disproportion in her torso and arms. I guess Max doesn't dig Russian Girls, well his loss.
@@yamato8000 It makes sense, though. Her fighting style is a military art focused on quick takedowns, so she was going to be bland from the start. Too bad they didn't do all that much with the ice.
From an animator's point of view, Abigal's animations are spectacular and should be near the top. Why? They're expressive, unique and they convey the character's personality perfectly.
Also his V skill where he just flexes and hits pass through him without effect, looks totally unnatural and toy like. Like a red plastic figurine stuck in a pose.
If you watch it slowed down, he does rotate it but it’s quick and returns to a neutral position like a ballerina or figure skater. Given that his super is named after a famous russian ballet troupe, i think this was intentional
the funny thing is, that's kinda how you're supposed to move your head when you spin (ice skaters do it)... they just exaggerated the lack of moving too much
Some alternate costumes look so much better than the default that I never use the default. I would rate certain characters differently depending on whether I was using the default or my preferred costume for them. Nostalgia Birdie and Akuma rate higher for me than their default costumes.
Sakuras redesign is missing BLUE. They got the red, they got the white, but they skipped the blue. It's a nice strong colour that really popped in her normal outfit, wish they kept it for her redesign.
I expected Falke to get bottom tier because "boring lolz" is the meme with her... even though I like her a lot. Her movements are minimal and stiff but that jibes with her character so I feel it's a plus in her case. I'll grant, that would only move her up to "Good" at best because she has the same problem as Ed where every other costume she has is better than her default.
Given how SF's always been a definite semi-realistic anime aesthetic, not sure why they went with mocap instead of animating by hand using reference. It definitely worked for their 2D stuff, and it works for Arc System Works; hope they consider it for SF6.
I think augmented motion capture can look fine (It's the technique they use for most of the cast for SF5 and it looks great on a lot of them), but hiccups happen, especially when characters don't really do anything dramatic to give the animator something to tear into... like most of the characters that have issues being "mocappy" are ones that don't really have out-there fighting styles, crazy moves or over-the-top personalities.
@@kevingriffith6011 I do agree, think it can look solid, but feel that it fits more for games like Tekken where it's a little more grounded in hand-to-hand combat, not flipping in the air throwing fireballs. SF, all 2D fighters, rely on frame data, so sometimes even toning down animation might benefit for the flow of the animation and even readability; it's part of why Max keeps mentioning some things even seemingly looking better in SF4 It's like, you sorta see it where they got more used to using it with Cody and his extra flourishes, Dan's got it going on, even Akira in the preview trailer looks like she's sorta swinging wild after she attacks, giving them all this limbs-akimbo feel instead of it looking like controlled movements or reactions. Dan benefits the most because he's comedic in nature, but Cody and Akira, Sakura, not-so-much Not saying the animation's bad, not at all. But~ feel like they're just using the mocap because it's available from Monster Hunter and Resident Evil production and they're relying on it a little too much. Not saying that they have to go that route, but I do think that what ASW is doing with their fighters is a good reference point for theory on how to pull off frame animation for a 2D fighter in a 3D format. Not to a T, don't even need to do the cel-shader route (though if they did on par with SF3 or CvSNK in 3D, holy shhh-IT boi), but take notes here and there because man it just feels right with what ASW is pulling off
@@RrowdyBeast Eh. I'm kinda 50/50 on that. You've got characters like Zeku, Menat, G and even Abigail that animate *beautifully* in SF5, and characters like Bison or Dhalsim never looked this good in 2d (more of a fault of too much loyalty to their SF2 animations IMO, but still)... and then you've got Falke or Cody that just kind of... are? Arcsys are knocking it out of the park, for sure, but I don't think SF5 is slacking off in the animation department, unless you count their hair and the faces of the season 1 characters. (Keyframed cloth and hair would make some of these characters *sing*)
@@kevingriffith6011 lol Yeah, the unchecked physics aren't helping; it's part of why I'm thinking that they might be just pressed for time and relying on automated or semi-automated solutions provided from access to the RE/MH studios, which I totally understand. And they're doing some great stuff, I specifically love watching Rashid, Zeku and Minat move Liker, it doesn't look bad at all, even some of the rougher executions at the least and get the point across well enough. Just feel like it could lean more to the keyframing with strong reference, or even aid from the mocap, but not relying on it as much as they currently seem to be and stylizing it to give less of an uncanny valley effect and more of a visual impact that rivals the likes of their later/CPS-3-based 2D fighters It's all good, I agree with you in that it can be a valuable tool, but, even though I feel like an ass saying it, hopefully SFV was more of a learning experience than a cementing of technique for future entries. It's getting there, but just not quite feeling it personally
The thing about Alex is the modeling. His design is actually really great when you just look at bengus’s art of him he looks arguably better than most of the cast. They really sold the idea of pre sf3 Alex with his uneven hair he’s clearly still growing out, and his build is overall slimmer and less defined than 3s Alex while still clearly being him. The modelers just did an absolutely terrible job capturing his art.
Yeah, thats what I thought too! Yes he's weird and annoying but he supposed to be and his visuals are consistent with that. I also feel that way about Abigail, you may not like him but his animations/looks really match his personality.
I think F.A.N.G. was *supposed* to have a sinister side (based on Shinigami/Japanese grim reaper, a ruthless assassin who murders people with poison) in addition to his goofy side, a mixture of both sides like Judge Doom or something, but they forgot to play up his sinister side in battles. A missed opportunity in my book.
I'd give Lucia a plus for her attacks being loyal and upgrades to her final fight 3 animations at the same time, plus all the extra ending flourishes. Like when you kick a fireball with flipper shot, she smacks away the remaining embers on her shoe before returning to idle. Girl is just laid back, adorable and smooth all at once
Love that the SF Devs looked at the reception of Seth and actually made an attempt to redo the character and make them sick. And it worked, Seth is super fun and does cool stuff.
Ngl Cody's development is so amazing, and the fact that he's finally cleaning up his act as mayor. *_But_* his visuals look so stiff, which I kinda wished they could fix in future instalments.
@@monkakonga4305 I just looked it up. Ryu, Ken, and Dhalsim are tied for the 3rd shortest male characters in the game, all sitting at 5'9. Eleven is 5'7 and Oro is 5'3. Still tho, Ken is one of the shortest dudes in the game, so of course he'll look short compared to dudes who average like 6'4.
I had such high hopes for necali. Everything about necali screamed main villain especially from the first intro. Everything about him is so cool. The idea of a warrior who went mad from consuming the souls and power of the warriors he’s killed is so fucking cool and the fact that his V-trigger is just him becoming sane again is hype as fuck.
At first I thought Max was just making a personal jab about Ken's design being so stubby and short like it was just all in Max's imagination or something. ...Then I saw the footage of Ken fighting Alex and I was like, "Woah, I had no idea Alex was this huge." He isn't... KEN'S JUST SHORT.
I am pained at the fact few people like F.A.N.G. as i love him. I like how much of a smarmy, and irritating pip-squeak he is, and especially the old-school Chinese henchman aesthetic. I love his game play with the poison and weird movement, how much of an odd ball he feels like, especially next to the more serious fighters. I would love to see him return as the head of shadaloo now without Bison a crumbling shell of its former self making him a king of nothing, trying to rebuild the organisation back up. There is just so much potential I feel is overlooked by most, and due to his lack of popularity will most likely get snuffed in the next games roster. The pain of maining weird, less serious characters like Duck King in FF/ KoF.
I actually like Ken's outfit in the game. Looks like a much more layed back martial artist, even his stance gives off that vibe. I do agree that he look short and stuby and that his hair looks wonky.

I like the animations that are smooth and motion-captured for her. But that one combo that always ends with the arm breaker air throw looks so unnatural and video gamey to me. It drops her 1 entire tier by itself.
@@creedolala6918 to be fair a lot of the first 3 seasons of characters that had air throws, a lot of those animations looked wonky. Remember how terrible Cammy's was?
This is what I have been feeling for a while now. Every character from launch to Season 1 feels cohesive in terms of modeling, and Season 2 onward makes the characters look like they are from a different game. It's a lot like how the female DLC characters in Tekken 7 have more unique-looking faces compared to Alisa, Asuka, Xiaoyu where they look like dolls. Even the later characters of Street Fighter 4 in terms of modeling felt somewhat consistent to the vanilla cast but with their own slight differences. Also Seeing SF5 Ryu's chunky body next to say Lucia or Dan is kind of Jarring in a way and is why I do not like most of the roster altogether in terms of aesthetics and proportions. (But I still like all the newcomer designs a lot except Falke and maybe Ed). I feel like Capcom was trying to make the models following the guidelines they have set ever since Street Fighter 2 (big hands and feet) but they should have made the characters more like how the Season 5 characters are in terms of proportions.
ehhh why am I the only one who likes Abigail. I think I'm the exact opposite of most. I was disappointed when he was leaked and then super on board when he got revealed finally.
It’s crazy how season 3 could’ve potentially been one of the best visually looking seasons. Sakura and Cody look off and move weird but have arguably the best redesigns in the game. Then you have great looking characters like G and Sagat that put so much work into them. And finally Blanka looking great and Falke just has so many questions, they really could’ve done so much.
I think Mika's voice adds a lot to her character. It's so scratchy cause she's always yelling - she's a tomboy, it's great. (If only she didn't have arm floaties on her chest for no reason except.. "appeal")
I think Seth has one of the best redesigns ever. First introduction Seth was basically Bison's ambition made into an android. Boring character. Seth coming back as a broken doll shoved into the wrong body is fantastic. Seth going around denying he is broken and desperately trying to fulfill his directives, while denying he is defective is perfect. Thinking Juri arranged for this just because she thought it would be funny is the best. Visually Seth has a move set taken from different characters in Capcom fighting games that aren't being produced anymore. Seth as a bundle of Easter eggs is great, and the mish mash of moves flow to make a cohesive character. A rare case where the concept sounds problematic but the execution was great.
I don't get the rating for Abigail. He's one of the most well animated characters in the entire game. He has tons of little animation flourishes, you could tell the animators were having a ton of fun with him. Is he a weird out there design? Sure, but if everything conformed to one standard type it would be boring.
He has a lot of character in his moves but his design in general is bad. The supersize body with a tiny head looks so dumb as does some of his jab animations.
it's actualy interesting that not many DLC characters are in the S category, usualy as it goes, the DLC characters end up the most interestiing overall, but it's refreshing to see that even vanilla characters are all over the place, even in the S category
you have a point there, but it's still an interesting display nontheless. especialy if you consider how many DLC characters are also on the opposite of the spectrum
Max's criteria for ranking these things, is all over the place. i think he somewhat confuses ''not liking a character ''with having ''bad design/visuals''.
Max is def inconsistent on this and I get it, opinions and emotions and all get in the way of critical thinking but I feel some of these are too much based in not liking playing as or playing against these characters. Like FANG and Abigail animate really well and imo, FANG has a creepy look that sets him apart of the usual designs of characters.
Fang is legit probably my favorite character design visually and animation wise. I disagree 1000% with his placement. But to each his own. The worst visual design is undoubtedly Alex. The way he stands with his legs facing backwards and his upper body twisted forwards literally prevents me from being able to play with him lol it’s just too distracting and ugly. And it’s such a letdown because he looks so sick in third strike.
@AresGodOfWar Even I didn't know what they were doing with Kage, but He still is a good character! I think they were trying to fool people that he ain't Evil Ryu but his voice, moves & face are kinda like Evil Ryu!

@Lex F.A.N.G is one of the worst Street Fighter Characters ever!
I completely disagree with Max's aversion to silly looking characters. Not every design has to strive for "cool" to be a good design.
I don't know why Birdie gets a pass but FANG and Abigail don't. They achieve their silly design goals flawlessly.
I know singing the praises of Codys design when he's just a guy in a tight suit you can see on a night out nothing interesting going on there like and he famously hated Rufus a very interesting goofy looking character
@The Final Aeon Momentary i was livid when I saw that _he_ was Ken's final fight. Like, what the fuck, Capcom?
Wouldn't say it an aversion to silly designs considering he rated birdie as a world warrior
@@vallgron Rufus just sucks as a design and character all around, and its not just because of the silliness (which isn't a bad thing in itself).
Putting Kolin in the same tier as Ed and Ken physically hurt me.
I think it is deserved honestly, she is just bland.
@@yamato8000 It makes sense, though. Her fighting style is a military art focused on quick takedowns, so she was going to be bland from the start. Too bad they didn't do all that much with the ice.
Her "On your knees!" counter is one of the most visually satisfying things in SFV. Like damn, landing that shit feels amazing.
@@ProjectH1980 Sakura got one just now
From an animator's point of view, Abigal's animations are spectacular and should be near the top. Why? They're expressive, unique and they convey the character's personality perfectly.
I agree. That triggers so much when people say that visually he is garbage.
A lot of characters animation in sfv are like that tho
Love Abigail lmao, such a fun character
I dont like Abigail, but he has a lot of expressive and strong animations. Didnt SugarPunch make a video on him? There was clearly stuff to cover.
This.
I just hate that Zangief doesn't move his head in his v trigger 1. That really gives him a toy like vibe.
Also his V skill where he just flexes and hits pass through him without effect, looks totally unnatural and toy like. Like a red plastic figurine stuck in a pose.
If you watch it slowed down, he does rotate it but it’s quick and returns to a neutral position like a ballerina or figure skater. Given that his super is named after a famous russian ballet troupe, i think this was intentional
the funny thing is, that's kinda how you're supposed to move your head when you spin (ice skaters do it)... they just exaggerated the lack of moving too much
Fr he like a whole action figure lmao
I'm so happy that Juri is on top, she just looks and plays fantastic.

Waiting for the KoF Tier list
(Kenny knows the shit btw)
I expected Falke to get bottom tier because "boring lolz" is the meme with her... even though I like her a lot. Her movements are minimal and stiff but that jibes with her character so I feel it's a plus in her case.
I'll grant, that would only move her up to "Good" at best because she has the same problem as Ed where every other costume she has is better than her default.
Rashid, Menat and G are my 3 favorite characters in the game...They just move and look amazing.
SF, all 2D fighters, rely on frame data, so sometimes even toning down animation might benefit for the flow of the animation and even readability; it's part of why Max keeps mentioning some things even seemingly looking better in SF4
It's like, you sorta see it where they got more used to using it with Cody and his extra flourishes, Dan's got it going on, even Akira in the preview trailer looks like she's sorta swinging wild after she attacks, giving them all this limbs-akimbo feel instead of it looking like controlled movements or reactions. Dan benefits the most because he's comedic in nature, but Cody and Akira, Sakura, not-so-much
Not saying the animation's bad, not at all.
And they're doing some great stuff, I specifically love watching Rashid, Zeku and Minat move
Liker, it doesn't look bad at all, even some of the rougher executions at the least and get the point across well enough. Just feel like it could lean more to the keyframing with strong reference, or even aid from the mocap, but not relying on it as much as they currently seem to be and stylizing it to give less of an uncanny valley effect and more of a visual impact that rivals the likes of their later/CPS-3-based 2D fighters
It's all good, I agree with you in that it can be a valuable tool, but, even though I feel like an ass saying it, hopefully SFV was more of a learning experience than a cementing of technique for future entries. It's getting there, but just not quite feeling it personally
Mixing both is best
The thing about Alex is the modeling. His design is actually really great when you just look at bengus’s art of him he looks arguably better than most of the cast. They really sold the idea of pre sf3 Alex with his uneven hair he’s clearly still growing out, and his build is overall slimmer and less defined than 3s Alex while still clearly being him. The modelers just did an absolutely terrible job capturing his art.
Falke's character design is Amazing imo. I love all of her triangles.

Yeah, thats what I thought too! Yes he's weird and annoying but he supposed to be and his visuals are consistent with that. I also feel that way about Abigail, you may not like him but his animations/looks really match his personality.
@@keithr.4645 Most people just find abigail's design extremely unappealing.
As a juri player I appreciate this
I'd give Lucia a plus for her attacks being loyal and upgrades to her final fight 3 animations at the same time, plus all the extra ending flourishes.
Bison is top tier animations and design wise. He looks intimidating as fuck and slick with his cape.
Ngl Cody's development is so amazing, and the fact that he's finally cleaning up his act as mayor.
*_But_* his visuals look so stiff, which I kinda wished they could fix in future instalments.

Kolin is super overlooked, I think her design and moves are outstanding.
Fang animates great even though his character is weird. I don't like the ultra thin head though. It's not necessary.
He sucks

Kolin’s backwalk should at least get her Good tier…

Hottest of hot takes...I LOVE Akuma's redesign
Watching you physically act out Cody’s moves killed me. It killed me dead.
Im died when kenny called him lmao

ehhh why am I the only one who likes Abigail. I think I'm the exact opposite of most. I was disappointed when he was leaked and then super on board when he got revealed finally.
Everytime I see Necalli I just say "oh.... he's in this game, i forgot"
Dude! Akuma's lion mane is so cool! And you put G up there instead? Sweet jesus, you're gonna give a heart attack or something.
F.A.N.G. is World Warrior tier, you can't change my mind
We all know in our hearts Blanka-chan is in another plane of existence tier and that's enough.
keep doing this visual tier lists, i really like it
I think Mika's voice adds a lot to her character. It's so scratchy cause she's always yelling - she's a tomboy, it's great.
(If only she didn't have arm floaties on her chest for no reason except.. "appeal")
Street Fighter currently looks like action figures. Guilty Gear's been killing it for a while as far as visuals though.
Definite step-up for the character, absolutely.
Awh, I really like Akuma's mane. Makes him appear more beastly and intimidating, which I love.
Yes definitely agreed!!
Isn't the S-tier almost half and half in terms of base game and DLC characters? I know Juri was basically day-one DLC, but still.
you have a point there, but it's still an interesting display nontheless.
especialy if you consider how many DLC characters are also on the opposite of the spectrum
Cody probably moves weird cause they wanted to emphasize him as a beat em up character
lol, I shouldn't have laughed that hard
I can imagine Max singing "somebody that I used to know" to Ken
How about a SFV character theme song tier list next?
G and Guiles SFV themes have to be in top tier
Juri goes back to bottom tier ;-;
Alex is high on that list for me
Max's criteria for ranking these things, is all over the place. i think he somewhat confuses ''not liking a character ''with having ''bad design/visuals''.
@@nikkis.2066 true that
Fang is legit probably my favorite character design visually and animation wise.

I'm really surprised the spy-catsuit look was kinda poorly received by some; I like her 'classic' look, but the SFV outfit sets her apart.
