There is one thing that Gootecks failed to mention that I'm just now learning as a new stick player: stick placement is important to getting accuracy down. I was doing the exercise he gives here of doing fireballs over and over in order to make sure I could get the motions down, but noticed sometimes one side I could execute 8-10 times consecutively while the other side I might do 3-5. It wasn't specific to one side either; if I could pull it off on the right side the left suffered and vice versa. I tried changing hand positions which just made it uncomfortable on my left hand and wrist trying to hold and move the stick in somewhat awkward positions. It wasn't until I adjusted the position of the controller in my lap that I started to get cleaner and cleaner inputs on both sides without gating (hitting the edges of the joystick opening). I actually had to sit it off center and rotated about 5 degrees to find a spot that's comfortable. It's probably going to be different from person to person and stick to stick but I figured I should share for some folks that are having an issue with accuracy.
Bruce Lee: Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless like water if you put water in the cup it becomes the cup and water can flow or it can crash. Sorry but I think this is also relevant! :) PS I really love my FIGHTING STICK 3:)

I bought my first stick just yesterday, and I am so happy I found this video so early while I am still learning the basics. I made those left hand movements the whole day yesterday. This anchoring tip really makes a difference.
After two years of playing stick, the Japanese boy part just completely changed my execution. I'm SO much more precise because of those few sentences. Bless you Gootecks.
I’m 8 years too late but man thank you, that stick holding tip alone changed my whole game up… it’s like my brain knew it all along how fast my hand adapted to the correct position, I can hit supers in old school fighters 3x easier now!
Gootecks, PhD I remember watching a video where he was talking about the importance of spacing and learning characters' "footsies" and a whole bunch of other stuff that I had NEVER considered. That was when I realized that I was lord scrubbington.

Thanks so much for the really detailed and down-to-earth tutorial! Trying to transition to a fightstick ever since I played a SFV machine at a convention. Really digging it so far!
Thanks gootecks. Your PC processor analogy really put things into perspective for me. I find that when I drop combos during a match I get frustrated and lose confidence in my execution, which causes me to focus more on that and not making good reads and whatnot. After playing for so long I guess I've felt like I pretty much got all the basic stuff down and I never practice it, instead opting to work on more and more advanced techniques. I'm going to spend more time in training mode on basics just to sharpen my fundamentals.
Great video for NOOBS, not so much so for more advanced players (very well explained though!) .......I would like to see an advanced video which discusses finger placement/techniques for pulling off big FADC combos, I can do them but would love to see how I can hone the skill so to speak nice1 Gootecks, keep up the good work fella
Doooooood, this is a great idea. Having just started using a stick myself, this is the best timing possible for you to come out with a video on this. The first part about hand positioning was incredibly valuable. Thanks a lot for doing this gootecks, and I hope you do more vids about this.
Thanks Gootecks. Being an old guy, I grew up with bat tops in the arcade. Using a ball top is very foreign to me. For the life of me, I cannot FADC into a 2QCF ultra on the left if I'm using a ball top, but I can with a bat top. Now, I'd love to see how you do that with Ryu, using that grip *during a match*. Training mode is one thing but doing it under pressure it where it matters.
I'm going to play fighters with a stick after years of playing fighting games a handful of times with a regular controller. I'll definitely be using this as part of my training. awesome video!
Gotta say thanks for this. Recently got a te fightstick and was horrible with it. After hearing what you said about planting your left hand down and using small movements to move the stick, I've been hitting my combos much more consistently. Great vid.
I had been a high-level pad player for years, but after a two-year fighting game hiatus, I hopped on a stick to play the floor demo for SFV and I did surprisingly well. I think the long break allowed me to unlearn old habits and open the door to finally playing well on an arcade stick, but of course there's always room to improve. This video is excellent, man. The information here is invaluable.
It's so easy to get down on yourself for not picking up a skill instantly. Really glad I found this video, not only is it a great lesson but it's definitely the reassurance I needed that taking it slow and starting with absolute basics is okay!!
This video is very encouraging. I just started using a stick and I felt really bad because I'm striving with execution and I think I'm not able to analyze the game I'm in. I "just" need to rearrange the "core usage", and this gave me trust! Thank you, and let's start practice!
Not sure if you still receive comments from viewers since this video was made 2 years ago, but I just want to say thank you for making tutorial videos on how to use fight sticks correctly. Too many people believe that fight sticks will allow for correct input every time. Not true. It takes practice and patience. I recently purchased my first fight stick and before I used the Xbox One controller to play Killer Instinct. I wanted to try a fight stick with Killer Instinct so I purchased one. I was holding the stick wrong, your video corrected this for me. I was placing my right hand over the buttons wrong and your video corrected this for me as well. I'm going to practice my movement like you suggested and my commands in Practice mode. Again, thank you for making these videos!
I can honestly say I never thought the transition from controller to arcade stick would be difficult but I’ve played so many years on controller it only makes sense. But thank you I currently have a hori rap 4 Kai for the PS4 and this video help me out a lot thanks dude much appreciation for this
Thank you for the video Gootecks help me a lot because I'm someone who is new to playing street fight but have always wanted to learn how to play. So thank you for giving me a starting point.
Thank you for putting up this video. I am just getting into fighting games and I bought USF4 and an arcade stick. This video is precisely what I was looking for to get me started.
More Gootecks! You should also mention to other people that doing the fireball motion or dashes etc. they develop something called muscle memory, so in a real match they don't think about doing the fireball motion and stuff like that it just comes naturally.
I bought a stick last month and I love the transition. Im gonna try ur two finger tech. I use my thumb for light kicks but ur explanation has me considering ur alternative. Thanks Gooo
Thanks for the tips BigGOO! I'm gonna use some of these new found "double finger" techniques with my girl tonight. I'll keep you updated on how it goes.
I always thought that the stick was stupid and not precise at all; but then I saw Max Dood using it and I also saw that he plays like a pro. so I bought the less expensive one and I have looked EVERYWHERE for finding a GOOD tutorial about the stick and I was so stupid to not check out the best channel of fighting games ! TANKS A LOT ! (I apologise for grammatical errors but I'm not British of American so.....)
I actually just got my Fight Stick however I'm using it for Ultimax. Holy hell this video helped a lot, I was doing all the things he told me not to do, like jamming the stick around. I really appreciate the tips!
as a new fighting game player this was a massive help to me. i really thought i just didn thave what it took to be able to do certain inputs, but now i know i have to practice them like a dainty Japanese boy
Man when i was new to the game i remember grinding in training mode with e. Ryu trying to do his b&b's and his fancy combos without knowing what a 1 frame or 2 frame link was because i saw sako do some crazy shit with e. Ryu. After a month i could do those combos like 90% of the time. So IMO more than anything raw experience is what you need to improve your execution.
Same thing happened to me with Rose(and few others), I had no idea that I was hitting 1 or 2 frame links before I checked the FAtool, I was just like ...oh! (also Im playing on PS3, I had no idea that there was any input delay, if there really is any :/ )
ickerolig PS3 and X360 use the same servers but PSN's API seem to always be a bit slower. The problem with Capcom fighters on PS3 is that for some reason they always use Vsync, which causes delay in some frames when the action is heavy because it forces the GPU to finish every frame before starting with the next one, while on X360 the games are Vsync free, so when the action is heavy the console is able to skip frames when it can't handle them. Another thing to note is that "netcode" doesn't mean anything, it's nonsense. There's no such thing as an elaborate programming for networking, just awful servers and synchronization.
As with anything that you do, structured training & methods are always more efficient than blind grinding. Practice is practice, but you can do it the wrong way or the right way.
this is gonna sound weird but works for me. I wrap my middle and index finger on the base of stick, placing the side of my palm on the board. for button fingers hold them diagonal and adjust based on the layout. point being, there is no right or wrong way to play stick, practice it yourself and find what works best for you. everyone is different.
Thanks for the work you put into this video! I've been wanting a stick for a while and finally got one today so I decided to see if there was a good way to learn how to use it and a search later there I am.
Just wanted to give you a shout and thanks for all the tips on playing on stick. I just recently switched from pad to stick. Always been a pad player since I was kid. Playing SFV on stick is a new experience and it's been a great one. I'm playing characters that I would not even consider playing on pad. So worth it.
thanks for the really useful tip!!!. ibess holding the joystick wrong since I started playing. it took some getting used to but once there it really gives you tons of control. for some reason it also subconsciously prevents me from jumping and do more blocking. it's really great!
Thanks gootecks for this video because three weeks ago, I bought my first fightstick ever and I never had the chance to play fighting games in the arcade because I was too young. Your video (including those from Maximilian) made my decision clear enough. This can be easily applied to any fighting games (or even spectacle fighter games). I bought the T.E.2. after playing four months of Killer Instinct with a pad and... oddly enough, it took less than a week to be used to it despite some pain in my wrists. One thing is I've got better doing uppercuts on the fightstick compared to the pad because of the corners and my overall inputs with all characters (in KI) are much more precise (except actual combos with certain characters). Again, I'm not a pro but I did feel a huge difference when I switched to thr stick. In a single week, I got passed almost everything and I no longer look at the stick so I can do my inputs correctly and my brother was surprised. Everything almost come up on the screen naturally. I try to practice my inputs every single freaking day and when something is wrong in my inputs, combo executions or I don't feel good, I just don't play the game. However, it all comes down to personal preferences and I understand. I'm now used to the fightstick but even then, those explanations can be applied to those using a pad when it comes to execution or super basics. It's well done, very professional, very clear for anyone and it might be the best first step for anyone who want to get into the genre even if it's brutal. Thanks again.
Very helpful! I always thought having a fightstick was so that the punch and kicks are all lined up properly so you don't have to press the left and right triggers. But I never thought the main thing is about accuracy... Thanks so much for this
Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I just got my first stick and I'm already starting to get down things I was able to do on pad as I have been a pad player all my life, and use pad in MKX, but it just didn't feel right for SFIV. Had I not watched this I would be doing exactly what you said not to at the beginning. I have a long way to go, but for half an hour on the stick as a first time stick player I think I'm doing pretty well. And it's because of this tutorial.
Thanks so much for this video! I bought my first stick and grew frustrated and was about to just shelf it until i seen this please make more videos like this it will really help.
I wasn't going to watch this vid but now I'm glad I did. I bought my first stick a few months ago and I thought I could figure it out on my own, but even now I'm still having trouble with my execution. Turns out I been holding the stick wrong this whole time! Ugh, oh well time to get back in the training room. I hope you make another vid about this soon :)
TY so much for this video gootecks i was the new to fight stick but needed some pointers guy, and i was training my self with combos and ultis and stuff for GGXrd but not just the wave dashing and walking laps like u said so this video is going to help me alot so tyvm bro
Hey I know this is almost a decade old video. but this actually helped me by a lot. I play on hitbox for the most part but I did end up buy an arcade stick after sometime. though I didn't stick with it for long because I didn't have the time and I was having too much mis input. but now I want to be versatile and challenge myself and get good with the stick. after following your tips about the proper grip. I'm now actually able to do wave dashes with kings and blue sparks giant swing buffer. I still need more training. but I feel a lot better now. I was holding it as if i was driving stick shift truck lol
You... Are... Fuckin... GOD! Holy shit! I just got my arcade stick 4 hours ago and started practicing. Nothing ever frickin comes out ever! I was going insane, for 3 hours practicing. Just watch your videos and in 1 minute, a lot of things are coming out. Holy crap man, thanks!
"Plant your hand firmly on the stick" FUCKING WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! You just changed my whole playstyle Gootecks, goddamn. How could I have been so stupid?! This makes so much more sense.
Just bought Ultra a few days ago. Its a bit overwhelming all the stuff/characters there is to learn in this game. This has helped though. Thanks Gootecks
The best anime I can recommend would have to be Boku no Pico. Wonderful story, characters, and plot! The show is very enticing and will suck you in by the first episode!
This is an old comment but dude, don't do that. Everybody already knows about ( which is why it's avoided) that show and what's it all about so please, just don't. Alright? Good.
I remember trying to figure out how to use a fight stick. I think I've switched styles at least 3 times before settling on the Daigo style. It just feels the best as someone who plays charge characters.

The rotation and placement are key. This I can certify.

Thanks again.
so helpful thanks dude
Very helpful! I always thought having a fightstick was so that the punch and kicks are all lined up properly so you don't have to press the left and right triggers. But I never thought the main thing is about accuracy... Thanks so much for this
Just picked up my first fight stick for my first fighting game, thanks for this video and many others!
You did a great job explaining everything Gootecks, I learned a lot. Can't wait for the next video
The pogchamp himself teaches me how to use a stick. nice.
Thanks so much for this video! I bought my first stick and grew frustrated and was about to just shelf it until i seen this please make more videos like this it will really help.
It's been years and this video actually helped me out with soul calibur 6
I wasn't going to watch this vid but now I'm glad I did. I bought my first stick a few months ago and I thought I could figure it out on my own, but even now I'm still having trouble with my execution. Turns out I been holding the stick wrong this whole time! Ugh, oh well time to get back in the training room. I hope you make another vid about this soon :)
I have Qanba Dragon with a sanwa circular restrictor gate & a bat top. Love it.
Dannnnnng, thanks for the video guys! I've been waiting for one like this!
TY so much for this video gootecks i was the new to fight stick but needed some pointers guy, and i was training my self with combos and ultis and stuff for GGXrd but not just the wave dashing and walking laps like u said so this video is going to help me alot so tyvm bro
Much appreciated tutorial video CC, please keep them coming.
GOOTECKS, please make some more of these, I really found this video to be incredible beneficial.
You... Are... Fuckin... GOD!
Dang, I think am the only 1 behind on watching current cross counter vids lol. Still on the holiday adventures XD great content as allways tho :)
Alright? Good.
NO PLS

Goo, you have to admit that it was funny! LOL
Muy bueno el tutorial Ryan!
I remember trying to figure out how to use a fight stick. I think I've switched styles at least 3 times before settling on the Daigo style. It just feels the best as someone who plays charge characters.
