  • A big thank you to www.oembimmerparts.com for sponsoring this video and providing the parts. Check them out if you're looking to do this job.
The running joke is, it seems like every BMW leaks oil from the factory. Well, that's not far off. BMW never seems to be able to fix the oil pan gasket they use on their 6 cylinder engines. Eventually the rubber goes hard and stops sealing properly and the thing leaks, and because the engine is mounted at an angle, the oil level is always above where the gasket sealing area is, so it leaks really badly. This problem usually develops after a certain mileage or number of years. Every BMW owner knows this and almost none of them have it fixed because it's an expensive job. But you know what, it's really not that hard to do yourself and I show you how in this video.

Just wanted to post a big THANK YOU. Because of this video, your efforts gave me the confidence that I could do the job myself. After watching it 3 times, and taking copious notes while I was watching, I felt that I was up to the challenge. The job turned out perfect, thanks to you. Doing this project myself made me appreciate the quality engineering BMW puts in their vehicles. Time consuming repair, yes. Difficult, not really, thanks to this video. Dropping a sub frame? First time I ever did that to a car. My intimidation I had before I started the repair is long gone. For those nay-sayers who bag on BMW's because they are expensive and hard to repair, I say open up your mind and learn. There is no other car I enjoy driving as much as my 2007 BMW E 90-N54 (335i with twin turbos). I still laugh every time I drive it. You guys out there that brag about your simple and cheap to fix Toyotas need to drive my car to realize what makes BMW's a great driving experience. Now that I am retired and on a fixed income, I really have to be careful how I spend my children's "inheritance". Did I save a lot of money doing the repair myself, yes. But the knowledge and confidence I gained from your help, priceless.

I'm a pretty capable home mechanic, in fact ready to R&R the cylinder head on my other '94 5 Series 525's. Did this job 10 years prior until the damn thermostat failed in a closed position, overheating the engine and well, you all know what happens then. No Bueno! This video is extremely helpful as I need to tackle the infamous oil leak on my '03 E39. I too will watch this as many times as it takes and make notes. It does look intimidating but I've done more complicated repairs and the truth is, once I go in a begin a job and carefully observe how everything is assembled, it becomes easier. That and laying in bed before falling asleep and running everything through my mind until it's imprinted in my brain, lol

Important details in case you miss them by clicking around the video are:
    1. Clean out the oil pan bolt holes with a bottoming tap or rethreading tap to clean out the old sealant that was used on the bolts, otherwise you risk stripping the new aluminum bolts as I did. Tap size is 8mm x 1.25mm.
    2. Replace the aluminum oil pan bolts, but if you are gonna be "that guy" and reuse them, make sure you put sealant about 1/2 inch or 12 mm from the tip of each bolt.
    3. Let the subframe dangle, no need to remove it completely. No need to disconnect the steering linkage or loosen the lower control arms.
    4. Use zip ties to hold the gasket onto the pan when reinstalling, then cut the zip ties before you completely tighten the bolts.
    5. Add medium strength threadlocker to your power steering pump bracket bolts to prevent them loosening up, backing out, and causing your belt to slip and shred.

In the past on other projects I have used a paint marker and marked one "tooth" of a torx bolt against the surface it is mating to then another on the outside of my socket. Then I set back my socket one tooth so when I tightened the bolt as soon as I made a solid line I had damn close to 60 degrees angle. 6 teeth set 60 degrees apart makes it super easy with torx style bolts.

Props to you sir for the skill shown in this video, your analytical comments, and for your contribution to the DIY community. Your sponsor - OEMbimmerparts - has good prices too.
With your video along with ISTA/D I was successful in making this repair on engine N52 in U.S. version 2008 128i/E82, left-hand drive vehicle with 179,000 miles on the odometer.
I performed a complete oil pan gasket replacement along with motor mounts, serpentine belt, water pump, and thermostat that took me several days to complete. The old gasket was date coded 2007 and exhibited the hardening especially in the lower right-hand side towards the rear. The original water pump, dated 2007, was functioning fine and the right hand motor mount had collapsed by about 10mm. I also replaced some hoses in the area of the water pump due to swelling.
If I may share some experience for others benefit:
1.) Torque angles are easily approximated by knowing the number of teeth in a full revolution of the ratchet wrench. After initial torque is achieved just count the clicks when backing the ratchet and continuing to tighten the bolt. Typical ratchet teeth numbers are 24 and 36, so 90 degree rotation is achieved by counting either 6 or 9 clicks, respectively.
2.) The N52 motor in E82 does not require the underbody cross braces or the power steering pump to be removed.
Finally all I can say is it was one heck of a job but I'm glad to be able to do the work myself. With videos like this I feel I was able to get a quality job with reliable results plus improvements along the way like replacing various mounting clips and a complete inspection of the engine bay to find other problems that might be lurking in the future. The cost of having this done professionally would have been prohibitive.
Many thanks - Captain Tim, Tampa, FL

Big OMG! I paid the Best Privately owned BMW shop in my area to work on my BMW, they had to replace the oil pan gasket naturally.
Under warranty they had to do it two more times and the last time they replaced the plastic pan with an aftermarket metal one which fixed it.
The mechanic owns the same car as mine (2012 328i). I'm sure the level of difficulty is the same as in your video.
I had no idea the job was this involved! I have done much of the easier work myself, water pump, oil cooler seal etc. But so glad I did not try that job with my 3 back surgeries I would not have been able to myself.

I know you are far more experienced with all of these cars than I even though I do all my own work on my Bimmers. I just went through a leak that dripped in this exact spot after I did an oil change and was doing some other work so I had the under guards off. I had a hard time getting the oil plug off when doing the change and when I put it back on I didn't want to tighten it like the last guy had so I only did it moderately tight. I decided to try tightening the oil drain plug more and the oil leak stopped. So check your drain plug s it's right at the same area.

Great tutorial, thanks a lot!!! But one thing i really do not get - the holes in the steering rack just have the size of the two bolts, so there is no possibility to adjust the position of the rack. And therefore there should be no change in allignment?!

Had an E46 with 60k miles in showroom condition. First the caliper seized. Then the coil packs went out. Then the starter went out ($600 just for the part. Yes I checked EVERYWHERE). Then the car left me stranded at a intersection... fuel pump. Then the water pump started to leak. Had enough. Got rid of it. Never again. And yes... I used to be a mechanic so I changed all the parts myself. Can't imagine with labor (for the cost).

I'm planning well ahead to do this job. I recently did the M3 control arms upgrade so my control arms are actually ball joints at the subframe, so I won't have to loosen them like you did. However there's still the tension struts forward of those. You're supposed to loosen those too when you drop the steering knuckle to take the shocks out...do you think you might risk straining the rubber bushings letting the subframe hang on them? I'm thinking not because it's actually closer to "ride height" from the bushings' perspective.
Also, if you want to torque to angle, it's very easy if you have a marker. Think about it - if you have a hex / e-torx bolt, there are six points along the circle, 360/6 = 60 degrees apart. Mark one of the "corners" and for 90 degrees, skip one corner and mark next to the bolt halfway between two. For 60 degrees, mark at the next corner. For 180 directly at the opposite corner, etc. Then just line them up. This is extra nice for suspension components etc where you probably want to use a long bar to angle them.

I've got that eastwood wrench - agree its an absolute pain to use - and NOT cheap. One of the few "fail" tools I have. There is too much slack in the drive to get anything accurate. Next time I'm doing anything angle related I'm going to use paint marks to mark the start and end and a reference mark on the bolt to see the travel.

I noticed you mentioned something about shredded belt. I found that issue to be a warn belt tensioner. With time and constant tension, it loses alignment and the belt side slightly toward the block. it's hard to notice until you pull the tensioner off.

Awesome work. Almost reference manual grade stuff. I learnt so much from this video. Although TBH, this is a bit above my paygrade. I swapped out the valve cover once and thought that was difficult but this is on a whole another level altogether despite the fact that you kept repeating "easy" several times. Using a jack to lift up stuff (even just for support) while the car is on jack stands terrifies me. I had an accident once when I used the jack a bit much and that lifted the passenger side of the car a smidge above the jack stand behind it. Basically, the car slid off that stand and somehow miraculously settled on the rotor (I had the front wheels off). Luckily I was not under the car but was working the jack from outside in.

If you had to, for this job, you might be able to leave the rear wheels down with the parking brake on. You don't strictly speaking need it level unless you're filling the trans / diff, and you're far enough forward it might be ok.
Now that you mention it, I've only ever lifted the rear for those two jobs.
