As someone who's been gaslit by hairstylists into believing that coloring isn't affecting my curl pattern, your video really nudged me to listen to my gut feeling. I've left visiting salons for this reason and started coloring at home with no bleach no ammonia colors. I have grey hair since the age of 10 (used henna before switching to hair colors 2 years ago) so coloring my hair is something I can't escape but doing it on my own terms is slowly making my hair curl again. Was thinking of shaving my head completely and start from the beginning for a long time but having seen your journey I think I'll wait and chop off the lower lengths instead. Will wait a year for my natural tight curls to return. Thanks for sharing this. This felt validating ❤❤
You know I've had grey hair from a very early age too. It's runs in my family. I use the Bblunt hair colour to touch up my roots each month. Have you tried it? If not, apart from henna what do you use? Do you feel like henna leaves a hard deposit on your hair?
That's the word! Gaslighting! I knew she wasnt being forthcoming. If she mentioned pre-lightening even once, I would have put my foot down then and there. What was the point of me talking to her at length about the colour process if she was going to do her own thing anyway. For her, she thought if she pre-lightened she could increase my bill by 3500 Rs. The price I paid was much much much much heavier. It costed me my mental peace, 1.5 years of trying and failing. You hit the nail on the head! It's nothing but gaslighting. I'm also getting a little sick about sitting and complaining about bad treatment from hair dressers. It's so negative all round. :(
@@MichelleManuel It's the same with my family and grey hair. I never liked henna because it's quiet messy and yes the hard deposit is another struggle especially if you aren't able to oil and wash the very next day. I wanted to use hair color for the longest time for this reason but the salon experience was underwhelming. I haven't got a chance to experiment much with hair colors. I have tried Biotique (do not recommend, made my scalp itchy). Currently I've used casting creme gloss from loreal and I'm liking it so far. The jelly masque that comes with it really worked well for my ends. The pattern is still loose there but they feel moisturised after using it. I'll definitely try BBlunt next time.
@@MichelleManuel The price-hike scam is very real. And before trying color at home, I was also forced to undergo some kind of protein treatment to "fix my hair" (it was okay before I started salon hair color so the irony is hilarious). I completely get the frustration when you pour in to tiny little details and the next person just ignores it. Also the part where you told how the other stylists kept telling you off on how "it suited you". I mean, been there totally. I guess in 2024 even though the experience is not that great, we do have this online community and niches where we can atleast talk and figure out a solution. So always greatful to jave people like you sharing the experience for all of us to relate to and learn from. All I can say is, please never stop sharing!! 🫶🫶
Kudos to you for keeping the video so helpful and objective, the whole experience must have been so painful. Your hair before you went to the salon too looked fantastic and they look very beautiful now.. i am positive all the structural damage will be undone gradually ❤
Thank you so much. I'm looking back at the pictures of my hair before I went to the salon. It didn't occur to me even once that my hair looked good. When you look at your hair everyday, you don't realise that it's lovely the way it is. You tend to take it for granted. Criticize it for no reason. Want better. No results are ever good enough. You find reasons to pick things apart. I was in such a dark place emotionally, my grief was at its peak, mentally and emotionally I was shattered, I was crying day and night. Could barely move or get out of bed. I felt so lethargic. I had zero motivation to work. I was desperate to change my hair. I thought if I look different, I'll feel different. Maybe then I'd have some motivation to get moving again. I thought this change would bring back my vigour. I didn't think it though, I acted on an impulse without thinking. If the hair dresser told me once that she was going to prelighten my hair I would have backed out instantly. She conned me in order to inflate my bill. You don't kick a person when they're already down. What else to say? The song: You don't know what you've got, until it's gone - this!

Hey Michelle. I can totally relate to you. A year ago, I went to a salon and specifically told my hairdresser not to bleach, but he didn't listen. I wanted a red colour for my hair, which I later learned doesn't need bleach at all. Anyway, the first month was alright, but when the colour came off, it became so rough and dry even after deep conditioning or using hair masks. My curls also didn't look like before. It loosened, definitely. I broke into tears. Instead of going to the parlour again, I started using box dye to hide the orangishness. It worked for a few months. But now I feel like I have ruined my hair more. My day 1 curls feel okay, but the other days, it just doesn't feel moisturized or defined. It's very frizzy and rough. I tried Olaplex, but it didn't work for me. It's been a year now. My hair grows slowly. I have cut down some inches. But there is still a lot of damage that still needs to be chopped off. Moreover, I am going through hair loss (telogen effluvium), and right now, I am feeling miserable because I don't know whether to take care of the hair loss or the hair damage.
I am so so sorry reading about your experience. It's very sad that we both had to endure the bleach when the colour requested didn't even need it. Also if you could speak to an endocrinologist and get some tests done, nothing like it. I started losing hair too last year. I got all the tests done. I started taking iron and using a hair growth serum. The iron tablets worked like clockwork!
@@MichelleManuel Thank you so much for the reply. I went to a dermatologist and got some tests done. I am taking supplements and a hair serum for now. The hair loss is going to take some time to stop, as my doctor mentioned. Just waiting patiently.
Hey Michelle di, it's so good to see you back ❤! Curl shock is heartbreaking, and for us it's really sad how there aren't many hair stylists who understands our hair and knows how to handle it😢. Even getting a simple hair cut is difficult. Even though i didn't get anything done to my hair, i also have more failed wash days than good wash days. It's a whole process. I only trim my hair a little when needed, that too at home.I'm glad your hair is doing better and that you shared the experience ❤. Your curls looks stunning here! 😍
It's very sad but unfortunately very true as well! Textured hair stylists are lacking in Kolkata. It's starting to feel familiar now. Each time I walk into a salon, my hair is ruined.
I am with you on this one, sometimes a professional doesn't mean she will do a decent job. I am so sorry this happened to you. I bleached my hair at home slightly and because I change color a I got little bit of damage, I decided to use olaplex 3 and K18. They are different and they can be used together (if not in the same day different day).
Very true. So much needs to change in the haircare space. We need more textured hair services and salons. Very few cities in India have salons that offer curly cuts.
No one will understand what it feels like to lose your curls! It breaks your spirit. Standing with you! Your hair will recover! Time is the answer! Keep trying and don't lose hope!
Prior to embracing my natural texture, I had my hair coloured. I think she bleached it because I went lighter (light brown) and honestly at that time I wasn't much into my hair so I didn't bother asking whether she bleached or not. Oh god! the tangles, the dryness, the breakage was unreal. The ends were so frayed and dull. Plus my stylist didn't tell me about using olaplex (I wasn't aware about olaplex back in 2018). I started using hair masks (never needed them before), hair serums and hair oils in a bid to help with tangles and dryness. Eventually I grew it out and cut my coloured lengths. My hair bounced back instantly. I have greys now but don't plan to colour them since I had such a bad experience in the past. Also I completely have the same experience of hair needing to be a certain length to get natural waves. If my hair is chopped above my breasts then I need to apply 2 gels to get some waves out of it vs when its till my waist and literally needs 2-3 pea size of leave-in conditioners to get well clumped and soft waves. I feel wavy hair shocks more easily than curly hair because it is more delicate and has less shrinkage. We need to be careful what we do with it. A bad colour can make it straight, a bad cut can make it super frizzy. Thanks for sharing your journey Michelle.
I simply went for hair cut ones nd I have wavy hair . The hairstylist constantly gaslit me to have salon treatments and said my hair is shit on my face .. never again my generations will step in that salon ..
The only thing that's shit is the hair dresser's lack of emotional intelligence and etiquette. I'm reading through the comments and feeling so infuriated! At least we have each other to vent to!
Both. I'll try to explain better. I do a protein washday once every month. It doesn't matter if it's a protein or moisture washday, whenever I see that my hair is falling flat and the curl definition is not good, I do an acv rinse the next time I style my hair. The styling lineup would be whatever I want, protein or moisture. If I'm doing a moisture washday and the definition doesn't matter I style with a comb. If I have an important event and I have to have good definition, I use a brush styling routine. Brush styling and doing some coils also enhances my definition. Hope this clears your doubt.
Such a helpful video i have the same curl pattern like u and your videos are super helpful I also needs to have length to curl properly Could u tell which is the best way to cover grey.
Awesome. Let me know if you need my exact shade details. I never colour it black cause it looks artificial and stark. I always go with the darkest brown, which looks like a more natural black imo.
once when I got highlights the hairstylist used a hair color which had developer over one part of highlights she just bleached.. and I didn't know much at the time about hair care and wasnt even using cgm at that time, and since my waves werent defined at all on the outer sections (my inner hair sections curls are visible even without product or styling) the highlights barely looked visible on that part and now when my hair is styled the highlights look very subtle and dont completely coincide with where my waves actually clump
also I feel like some professionals just do not know how to highlight wavy or curly especially very voluminous hair. Like the highlights looked more like babylights tbh
@@fishscales28 yup. I think they need to be slightly chunky to be visible. The highlight should probably be the size of each curl clump at the very least. Otherwise it will look very stringy and not visible. All of this is a lesson in expectation vs reality!
I had a haircut curl shock recently and it was horrible! I cut my hair around 3 months back and like you said it is wavy but only when it is a bit long, it got cut really short because I had not cut my hair for a year and a half and there were so many split ends...it took around 4 weeks for the hair to grow back in length and now I can see the waves again, even though they're not as great as before...the stylist who did my hair was bad too, he refused to believe that my hair was wavy, he just told me my hair was dry and damaged, I so badly wanted a curly cut and requested him to do it and he refused....I want to not wait for a very long time and have a trim regularly but I am so scared of going to any hairstylist now, they always treat my hair as damaged and straight,,,plus becuase I don't brush my hair too often, it often falls a bit more in the parlour and they make me stressed about my hairfall🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁
It is so upsetting to hear this. The hair dresser refused to believe that you had wavy hair and denied you a curly cut? That is beyond ignorant for a professional. The hair dresser offers curly cuts and does not know how to recognize wavy hair, which is undefined in its natural state? It's so infuriating to hear this. You were the client. He was the hair dresser so it is his job to have basic knowledge of haircare. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.
@@MichelleManuel yes unfortunately, he refused and told me I was forcing my hair to be wavy...this has happened to me so many times noww, I can't seem to find any parlour that will actually treat my hair as wavy and give me the proper cut...what's even more upsetting is he charged so much for that bad haircut he gave me...I was so depressed for a week but then finally accepted it...thank you for replying lovely!
@@JS-gn7zr it's much heavier than the Re'equil Pea Protein Mask. Has much better slip as well. If you enjoy super heavy masks then you could check it out. They've released a small 50gm tub. May be prudent to buy the small size first and see what's what.
It's as heavy as the Just Herbs Shirolepam/Shankhpushpi Hair Mask. Better slip than the JH mask as well. If you like the JH mask you will probably like the FMC protein mask as well.
It's really difficult to see your hardwork and all hair care going into the drain by just one mistake.. I guess it doesn't matter if u are a newbie or an experienced person.. Curly hair gonna teach u a lesson once in while.. 😅 But no matter what your hair is gorgeous.. I mean it will be a achievement for my hair to look just like yours.. ❤
What to say? I was very heavy in my grief at that point. I wasn't thinking straight. I needed an external change to help with what I was feeling internally. I acted on an impulse and just went for it. Your right. Textured hair teaches you you so much. I hope by being vulnerable and sharing my journey honestly I can help others not make the same mistake. That's all I can do. Some good has to come out of it.
using box hair dye only slightly flattened my curl pattern, after doing cgm, and I also used redken acidic bonding conditioner a few times but it does have silicones so may not be suitable for those who strictly follow cgm
There is no set answer because in India some leave-in conditioners are heavier than curl creams. All of us go through a long and tedious trial and error phase.
It is what it is. I've made my peace with it. I am happy with my hair. For better or for worse, I made a commitment to love my natural hair and accept it without complaints ❤️❤️
@@kookiechan2035 okay. I dyed my hair to cover greys and that also turned orange after a bit. I never went a shade lighter. I went darker. It was permanent dye however. We should find out the reason for this. Just for understanding

It's best to cut your hair at home if you don't have stylists who specialise in textured hair. No point risking it.
@@MichelleManuel yeah
@@MichelleManuel yes! no point risking it.
Thank you, Michelle. I feel you😢😢😢😢😢. LITERALLY LOST MY WAVY HAIR
💔💔💔💔
I simply went for hair cut ones nd I have wavy hair . The hairstylist constantly gaslit me to have salon treatments and said my hair is shit on my face .. never again my generations will step in that salon ..
The only thing that's shit is the hair dresser's lack of emotional intelligence and etiquette.
I'm reading through the comments and feeling so infuriated! At least we have each other to vent to!
Can you please review Alps goodness curly hair shampoo and leave in conditioner
Hi Michelle please suggest some of your favourite protein masks. Love your videos and recommendations. ❤❤
Hang on a teeny tiny bit? I'm currently trying some new masks! Will be sharing as soon as I have some concrete thoughts.
@@MichelleManuel sure. Thanks for replying. 😊
Hey di , my question is - what products did u use while doing acv rinses , is it protine product or your regular product?
@@MichelleManuel it did , thankyou ❤
Such a helpful video i have the same curl pattern like u and your videos are super helpful
I also needs to have length to curl properly
Could u tell which is the best way to cover grey.
Thank you!
I use the Bblunt hair colour. I did some stories on Instagram. The next time I'm touching up my roots I'll film it with all the details.
@@MichelleManuel thanks ❤️
@@Love_democracy12 I completely forgot, I did a video on this ua-cam.com/video/5V4YhFuWEqg/v-deo.htmlsi=qR71aYlH8dEKa6rv
@@MichelleManuel actually i had also watched this but didnot remember how helpful it was
💔
Hi Michelle, love your contents💝. Your videos are so helpful.I have wavy thick hair, can I use fix my curls protein mask with ashba leave in cream?
What's your porosity? Do you like light medium or heavy products?
@@MichelleManuel Thank you for replying.High porosity, rn I am using re'equil protein mask.
@@MichelleManuel I am also using just herbs mask alternatively.
But no matter what your hair is gorgeous..
@@MichelleManuel thank you very much for your efforts..
❤️❤️
using box hair dye only slightly flattened my curl pattern, after doing cgm, and I also used redken acidic bonding conditioner a few times but it does have silicones so may not be suitable for those who strictly follow cgm
and I feel like the definition mostly came back after a few months
Thanks for sharing! Could you tell me which box dye you were using?
It happened with me as well please suggest hair colour with doesn't damage my wavy hair and also covers greys
@@jiyalithadeshwar5141 I did a video on how I colour my roots at home. ua-cam.com/video/5V4YhFuWEqg/v-deo.htmlsi=qR71aYlH8dEKa6rv
Ohh thank you so much hope i get my waves back 😢
Which is better for wavy hair a curl cream or leave in conditioner? please answer
There is no set answer because in India some leave-in conditioners are heavier than curl creams. All of us go through a long and tedious trial and error phase.
@@MichelleManuel I'm a beginner and have a wavy hair pls suggest something
I noticed the moxie curl cream does something similar to my hair which is 2b mostly
I'm really glad it worked for you! It's become such a fav of mine! I use the moxie curl cream almost everyday! ❤️❤️
Ih so sad you lost your curls, hoping it goes back to being curly soon
It is what it is. I've made my peace with it. I am happy with my hair. For better or for worse, I made a commitment to love my natural hair and accept it without complaints ❤️❤️
Why does the brassiness/orangish thing happen?
I don't know.
I think because of the bleach . Because they bleached her hair and maybe the colour came off completely possibley that's why the bleach is visible.
Because they bleached her hair and when the colour come off completely the bleach possibley visible = orenge & brassi = damage.
@@kookiechan2035 okay. I dyed my hair to cover greys and that also turned orange after a bit. I never went a shade lighter. I went darker. It was permanent dye however.
We should find out the reason for this. Just for understanding
@@AMN320 Your hair was already gray which is a light colour and u put dark colour to cover it , now every colour fades when u wash that's why it's stained your gray hair orenge , And every hair colour fades over time .
