When you heard Scott's opening vocals and said, "it does not look like that voice was going to come out of that guy", I just broke down in laughter because I was thinking to myself, "just wait till you hear Mitch sing!" I am like many other pentaholics who go in search of people who have never heard of them, as amazing as that is, to see their reaction to the group that we are all so totally in love with. To see somebody react like you did reminds me of the first time that I ever heard Pentatonix and I got that vicarious thrill all over again! Getting full body chills is not an unusual reaction. Some are even brought to tears because of the sheer beauty and magic of the music. I loved your reaction and I am subscribing in hopes of more Pentatonix. Cheers!
I am 71 and I have spine and lung cancer. I listen to Pentatonix every single day. Hallelujah and The Prayer being the two songs that give me the most strength to make it through the day! This is not to say that I dont love ALL of their music. They bring me peace and joy and goose bumps and tears of joy. Thank you for reacting to them, and Thank you Pentatonix for sharing your talent's with all of us!
Pentatonix has three Grammys and multiple platinum albums. They are also due to get a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 21 of this year. They are fixing to start another tour next month in Japan, then to Europe. They sell out major venues around the world.
You pronounced it correctly. Yes, it's only five ("Pentatonix" means "five tones"). Please react to their version of Amazing Grace....it is beyond phenomenal.
They call themselves a "band," so you may as well do so also. And actually they've been around for 11 years; they began in 2011. As for how you could have not known, well, we don't know everything. I just discovered them about six months ago, so I was late to the party too. Come on in; it's a fantastic party. By the way, the fans call ourselves "pentaholics," and we're happy to help newcomers get up to speed. Oh, and it sounds like there's music because there *is* music; there just aren't any instruments. Five people it is. In this video: • First verse: Scott Hoying. Scott is a lyric baritone. Male ranges, from low to high, are bass, baritone, tenor, and counter tenor (also called contratenor). When referring to a man's vocal range the term "lyric" means that it exceeds his nominal range. In Scott's case, his actual range begins well into the bass range on the low end and extends well into the tenor range on the high end. • Second verse: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is a true basso profundo, the very lowest of the bass singers. His low notes have been known to blow out speakers in live performances, to the point where Pentatonix had to buy their own set of speakers that could stand up to him so they'd have something reliable on tour. However, Avi is a *lyric* bass, which means that his range doesn't end in the normal bass range. Avi's range extends up through baritone to the lowest reaches of tenor. Avi is also the only person who has ever left Pentatonix, in 2017, shortly after this video was made, for personal reasons. He has gone on to have a very successful solo career, and has a new band named "Avriel and the Sequoias." You can find his UA-cam channel by typing "Avi Kaplan" into the search box. I recommend subscribing. Avi's replacement doesn't appear in this video, but I'll give you information so you'll recognize him when you encounter him: • Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). Matt is the second black guy in the group; if you're uncertain which is which, Matt has pierced ears and wears what appear to be diamond earrings; Kevin (the beatboxer, whom we'll get to shortly) has no piercings. Matt is another lyric bass. He's also the youngest member of Pentatonix and it appears that his voice is still developing. When I attended their concert in Denver on November 20, 2022 he sang a different arrangement of the second verse of "Hallelujah" that seemed to have been written to show off his full range. I don't have a trained ear, but I would swear that his lowest note was as low as anything I ever heard from Avi, and his highest note was well into the tenor range. I always knew he was good - he's in Pentatonix, after all - but at this point Matt's voice is spectacular, and I expect it to continue improving for at least another year or two. His voice is reminiscent of chocolate, and curling up with a warm, soft blanket and a purring cat. And he has a delightful smile. •Third verse: Kirstin (also known as Kirstie - rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Women's ranges start at alto on the low end and run upward through several varieties of soprano: mezzo soprano is the lowest soprano range, followed by soprano, followed by coloratura soprano. Kirstin's actual range starts at the bottom end of the alto range and extends all the way through coloratura soprano. And on top of that she has wonderful whistle notes, which I won't try to explain because I don't understand them myself, but if you type "Kirstin Maldonado whistle notes" into a UA-cam search box you'll find a demonstration. Kirstin changes her hair color frequently (every day? I don't know, but it seems like it) and her figure has matured since the band started in 2011, when she was just 19. Additionally, her lips are fuller, and the shape of her smile has changed, so people frequently think they see a new woman in Pentatonix, but it's always Kirstin. Go by the voice, not the look. • Fourth verse: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), counter tenor. We refer to that amazed expression upon first hearing Mitch sing as being Mitch-slapped. Don't let it worry you; it's happened to all of us. (For that matter, it's happened to most of us more than once, because Mitch is full of surprises.) Mitch has a range of just over six octaves. He was nowhere near the highest he can sing in this song. His voice has been described as a "once in a generation voice." Shawn Stockman, of the band Boyz II Men, described it as "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." Most people just call his voice "angelic." Scott and Kirstin both say that sometimes in live performances they'll find themselves not singing, because they stopped to just listen to the beauty of Mitch's voice. But Mitch was bullied in high school for how high his voice is and he has trouble believing all the praise he gets. Fortunately, during lockdown he finally began getting some professional help dealing with his imposter's syndrome. Mitch is another one who changes his look frequently. Hair color (he went with purple for a while), hair style (he had a shaved head for a while, which led to unfounded rumors that he had cancer), facial hair or lack thereof, and weight are all variable with him. Also, sometimes he wears glasses and sometimes he doesn't. But as soon as he opens his mouth you know it's him. • The fifth member of Pentatonix is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Kevin is one of the best beatboxers on the planet, if not *the* best. Yes, he is Pentatonix's entire percussion section. He's also a genius. Kevin is classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello. He can and does beatbox while playing the cello, a technique that he invented and which he refers to as "celloboxing." He's performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a pre-med degree from Yale, and he speaks five languages, including Mandarin. And he's generally too busy beatboxing to sing, but on the rare occasions when we do hear him sing he has a lovely tenor voice, and is known for the great beauty of his falsetto range. And when he laughs the whole world seems like a brighter place.
Avi Kaplan, second soloist and bass is a classically trained singer and had just received a letter of hire from the L.A. Opera House the day before this group formed and he chose the group. He remained with the group for 6 years before leaving and now has a solo career. He is, in my opinion, that greatest bass out there.
Avi is not just a great singer, but he also a prolific songwriter. He often drops shorts/short recordings of either a portion of a song he has written or covers a bit of a song someone else wrote and recorded. Here is a cover of a short he recorded. He often records these from his cabin deep in the forests of Tennessee. ua-cam.com/users/shortse0AdWB44XEI
As you react to more recent PTX songs you will notice the new member of the group whom replaced Avi. His name is Matt Salee. Though no one can delve as deep as Avi, Matt brings a lot to the group and has been a great addition.
Matt Salee, who replaced him in PTX, fits quite well in his shoes. But if you want to hear two guys who ARE as good as Avi? Check out Geoff Castellucci from VoicePlay, and Tim Foust from HomeFree, two other acapella groups like PTX (although with quite different styles). All three know each other quite well, and Avi even sang with HomeFree for one collab. If I could recommend some good songs to get a feel of what they do, I'd say : - _Oogie Boogie Song_ and _Nothing Else Matters_ for VoicePlay. - _Man of Constant Sorrow_ and _Ring of Fire_ for HomeFree. Both group's repertoire is quite large, but those should be a nice entry =p
I love seeing people discover PTX. It is hard to imagine that anyone doesn't know of them. I will let you know that there has only been one member change. That was the bass, the man with the beard. The guy with the hat, and the girl, change their looks like chameleons, but it is always them. They have a huge catalog of music, both covers and original, and they have done all types. They are well known for their Christmas music. They breathe new life into old classics. Enjoy the ride.
What a great reaction! While virtually everyone who's never heard Pentatonix before gets "Mitch-slapped" when he (4th solo, round hat, high tenor/countertenor) starts his verse, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone just get completely Pentatonix-slapped quite as thoroughly! This was so much fun to watch! You mentioned that they sounded like an entire choir at different parts of the video - especially in the final two Hallelujah choruses, that's the Pentatonix "wall of sound", where everyone who's singing is belting their hearts out, and it does indeed sound like an entire choir is singing. It's something you'll hear fairly often in their music. And just so you know - while some groups (both a cappella and other) will sometimes "double-track" or overlay multiple recordings of someone to get a fuller sound, with few exceptions Pentatonix doesn't do that, because they want to be able to duplicate what you hear on a recording when they're performing the song in concert. For an example of that with this song, you could take a look at their live video of this song done in front of an audience for their 2016 Christmas TV special. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html BTW: Pentatonix's recording company is very strict about protecting their IP rights, and copyright blocks are a common occurrence when reacting to Pentatonix. The text overlay on the video and the multiple pauses are great when reacting to Pentatonix videos, as it helps avoid the copyright blocks - so keep it up! The Pentatonix fans ("Pentaholics") have all seen the videos multiple times, and we're here to see your reaction, not the original video.
I am so glad that you wrote all this down so that I didn't have to. I would like to second absolutely everything that you said including the live performance of Hallelujah and warning about the copyright police and how to avoid their wrath. As pentaholics we have seen every video that you'll be getting recommendations for tens if not hundreds of times and we know the videos by heart. We want to see your reaction and you have a really good one.
I LOVE the first time a reactor hears this group! They are 3x Grammy winners and are spectacular! You have 200+ songs/videos to choose from. I recommend Amazing Grace or The Prayer next. Subbing for more. You are gonna love it!! 🩷
This by far is one of my top 3 by them... this is the 1st I heard of theirs. Next you have to check Bohemian Rhapsody. Mitch ( guy in the hat) will blow your mind even more. We Pentaholics call it being Mitch slapped, when he hits those notes lol. But my favorite videos... are their cover of IMAGINE by John Lennon. (Will definately shed a tear for that!) Bring tissues. And also their cover of CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT. You're gonna have an adventure going through the rabbit hole of PTX. This song turned me into a PENTAHOLIC 3 years ago.
If you loved this one, you also have to listen to another acapella group (also NO music 😉) called *HOME FREE* with *_"Man Of Constant Sorrow"_* (see reaction requests). 5 male singers, sorry no women. You'll like them for sure. You won't believe they're doing all of the instrument-sounds with their voices.
Also, if you think Avi’s low note at the end of this sounded like a foghorn, check out VoicePlay’s cover of “My Mother Told Me.” Their bass, Geoff (sounds like Jeff) Castellucci, hits a couple notes that sound like a war horn from Lord of the Rings.
Pentatonix has hundreds of UA-cam videos with over 7 BILLION views. They started in 2011 and had one change in 2017 when Avi, the bass (looks like Jesus in the video), left and Matt took his place. I highly recommend that you react to Pentatonix "The Prayer" next. The wall of sound that comes from them is unbelievable. They sound almost exactly the same when they do these songs live. PTX doesn't do covers. They do upgrades. They do gospel, holidays, rap, country and western (they won a grammy with Dolly Parton), classical, hip hop, blues, golden oldies, swing, and many more genres. The "boy" is Mitch Grassi. He has that effect on everyone. It's called being "Mitch slapped" because you're speechless with your mouth open. He'll do it to you again many many more times.
Definitely. And "The Sound of Silence," and "Imagine" (she's old enough to have heard John Lennon sing it live), and maybe "Bohemian Rhapsody," if she's into Queen.
We the Pentaholics welcome you. They have 11 years of songs for you to explore. They are the best! Not only are the great singers, they are awesome people.
Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed in 2023. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
This is an awesome introduction to an incredible rabbit hole that I look forward to seeing you experience. Thank you for another great reaction. Cheers!
This song was my introduction to Pentatonix and my reaction was about the same as yours...pure disbelief. First song out of over 200...and just when you think you have heard them at their best....wrong...it gets better!!! I subscribed for more Pentatonix or PTX . You cannot go wrong with any song whether it be a cover (well an upgrade) or an original. Love watching people discover the best acapella group their is...they are definitely in a league of their own!!! Welcome to our world!!!
Your southern heart will also love Home Free! I recommend Man of Constant Sorrow, How Great Thou Art, and Mary Did You Know? To get started. Just a few of my favorites I think will also blow your mind!
I hope you don't pay much heed to those who don't like the interruptions. They seem to think the reaction part doesn't count, whereas it is a simple enough action to go the source if they want to hear it uninterrupted. I really like watching people discover Pentatonix and you didn't disappoint. I know you will find a great many other Pentatonix videos that will amaze you, and I'm looking forward to watching your journey of discovery.
Besides, if you play PTX vids straight thru without interruptions, you likely to get blocked. (The owners of Voiceplay and Home Free vids are less stringent.)
Penta means 5, They are known for creating their signature WALL of SOUND. Just a note; the 1st singer is singing bass while the 2nd singer (actual bass) takes the lead. They all have 6 octave ranges. DEEEEEEEP Rabbit hole with over 200+ videos. In a Class by themselves, at the beginning you said zillion 5 billion, truth is they are over 5 Billion views on UA-cam views. I would suggest "Sounds of Silence" next. There has only been 1 change in the group, the bearded man (Avi Kaplan) left in 2017, the new Bass since is Matt Sallee and you get to hear him. Bohemian Rhapsody is another insane one. That 1 girl is the POWER UP person of the group lol. In 10 years 3 Grammy's and nominated for their 4th this year. loved that.
This is one of my favourite ever first time reactions to Pentatonix! Also, they don't ever record anything that they can't sing live so if you listen to various times they have sung it live, it sounds just as good. Us PTX fans are called Pentaholics - welcome! I have been a fan since they got their first break on the a cappella competition 'The Sing-off'. They are the best a cappella band in the world in my opinion. "It's the most beautiful combination of voices on the planet" - yup that's Pentatonix but I was waiting for you to get the 'Mitch slap' and was not disappointed! He has the voice of an angel! You are in for such a treat. Mitch, Kirstie (mezzo soprano) and Scott (tall, blonde baritone) have been friends since they were 8 years old growing up in Texas and they sang in high school together. They found Kevin (the beatboxer, cello player and tenor too) and Avi (looks like Jesus - he's the bass) in 2011. The only group member to change since 2011 is the bass, who was Avi and the bass is now Matt Sallee - who is also amazing. You may think it's different members depending on when the songs were recorded but that's just because Mictha nd Kirstie change their looks frequently. They have a huge catalogue of all kinds of different music, pop, rock, EDM, rap, hip hop, world music, so something for everyone and though they are best knows for their beautiful a cappella covers and their Christmas music, their original songs are incredible too and much under-rated. They have three Grammys and a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. They are just incomparable. I always suggest newbies start with Bohemian Rhapsody, their Daft Punk Medley, Mary did you know, and The Prayer. Then try their 'evolution of medley' videos - my favourite ones are Beyonce, Michael Jackson and Ariane Grande. My favourite originals of theirs are Love again, Can't sleep Love and Sing. Enjoy!
Many have already recommended Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd also check out their Daft Punk medley, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Say Something, Amazing Grace, The Prayer, and so many others. There's been only one member change over the years (despite a couple of them always switching up their looks); Avi, the bass singer (long hair & beard), left for personal reasons in 2017 & was replaced by Matt. They also do a nice live version of this from a Christmas special years ago.
You are now a Pentaholic. Welcome to the family! I've had the increidible privalage of hearing them preform this song live. They are even better live. The guy who was singing at the beginning of the song is Scott Hoying, baritone and the heart of the group. The second singer is Avi Kaplan, who is a basso profundo, which means he can sing lower than a usual bass. Unfortunately, he did leave the group for family and health reasons in 2017. Their new bass is Matt Sallee, who you’ll see in their more recent videos. The woman is Kirstie Maldonado, who sings mezzo-soprano. The fourth singer in this is Mitch Grassi, counter-tenor with the voice of an angel. You haven’t yet heard the full range of what Mitch can do with that voice of his. He is AMAZING and he will take your breath away at times. We - the Pentaholics - call it being Mitch-slapped. You'll love a good Mitch-slap, we all do. Kevin Olusola (aka KO) is their beatboxer and human 808. He can also sing tenor and play the cello. Scott, Kirstin and Mitch have been singing together since they were in high school. After acquiring Avi and Kevin they won season three of Sing Off and have been unstoppable ever since. They are the first, and so far only, acapella group to win a grammy. Their newest album has just been nominated for what might end up being their fourth. You HAVE to see their video of 'Daft Punk'. It's what earned them their first grammy. Others you CANNOT miss are their covers of 'Gold' by Kiiara, 'Imagine' by John Lennon, 'Radioactive' by Imagin Dragons (with Lindsey Stirling), 'Can't Hold Us' by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, 'The Prayer' originally sung by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, and their original songs 'Sing' and 'Love Again'. That will get you started, but this rabbit hole goes all the way down. Our parents are about the same age, btw. My dad is turning 78 this Saturday. He loves PTX. :)
Over 200 upgrades (covers) and originals. Not a bad song in the bunch. About 95% of their songs are completely acapella. A few have Kevin's (the beatboxer's) cello, Scott on piano, guitar on one song, three collaborations with Lindsey Stirling playing violin and a few songs with instruments on their last Christmas album. They are probably the best acapella group in the world today. Their fans are called Pentaholics. It is a disease with no cure, not that we would want to be cured. They absolutely destroy us with the emotion and beauty of their work on a regular basis. Their are no words in any language that describes them anymore. They have been a group since 2011 and have only had one member change. Avi, the guy with the beanie that sang bass left in 2017 for personal reasons and was replaced by Matt.
Pentatonix have been singing together for over eleven years. Before that, the first (Scott), third (Kirstin), and fourth (Mitch) singers sang together in high school as The Trio. The second singer (Avi) is the bass and Kevin is the beatboxer. Avi left the band in 2017 and Matt is the current bass. They have three Grammys and had been nominated for a fourth as well as having an Emmy nomination. Recommend their cover of The Prayer. Subscribed.
If you want to see them do this LIVE, you will be even MORE blown away :-) Here's the link: Hallelujah (Live Version) Dec 22, 2016: ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html
Welcome to PTX!! You cannot go wrong with any of their songs! I saw them in concert in December 2022 (I'm 70 yrs old by the way!)..and they are absolutely phenomenal live!! They do not record any songs that they cannot perform live. Their live version of Hallelujah is beautiful. And...my absolute favorites for haunting harmonies are "My Heart With You", ua-cam.com/video/4Eo2_vkVTU0/v-deo.html And "Light in the Hallway" ua-cam.com/video/xlppyBJhLnc/v-deo.html But truly you cannot go wrong with any of their songs, "The Prayer" is phenomenal as well. Enjoy your journey down the rabbit hole. Have subscribed to watch along with you!
Thank you for your reaction. Don’t worry about stopping when you need to, it’s part of how you react. PTX has a very large selection of songs to choose from. They have mash-up medleys like Daft Punk and 90s Dance Medley and Evolution of Michael Jackson. They have covers (really upgrades) of Amazing Grace, Imagine, Sound of Silence, and many more. Almost any Christmas song. And they have a lot of original songs. Invariably they make everything their own. If you see a song you like, try it. If you see a song you think you won’t like, try it anyway. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Also, frequent stops and short rewinds are one of the things that tend to prevent RCA from complaining to UA-cam about "copyright violations," so they can help keep the videos up.
I love watching Pentatonix but I had to quit watching this lady's reaction due to the constant stopping every minute. I found it very annoying. I mean really it took 19 minutes to watch and give her reactions. Sorry if I sound rude but there have been too many sites uploading their reactions to various cover sites of groups dragging them on way too long.
Great reaction again. That Bass is Avi (ah vee) Kaplan. He is amazing. He solo now and I love his music so much. Check out their 'Daft Punk" video. You'll be floored. Keep them coming, you're doing great. ❤
I look every day for someone new to Pentatonix. Yes they are amazing. You need to react to their covers of 'Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone' and 'The Prayer'. Then dive into their other covers and originals. And don't forget to come back next Christmas for their Christmas songs!!!!
Welcome to the aural bliss of PTX. Your reaction is priceless. It’s always fun to see a first reaction to PTX. Enjoy your trip down the PTX rabbit-hole!
Hi! New sub and Pentaholic here! I honestly don't care which Pentatonix songs you choose to listen to! I'm here for ALL of them! Pentatonix could sing the phone book and I would STILL listen! They have - literally - covered everything from Sesame Street to pop songs to hymns and Christmas songs to jazz and even country! Pick your favorite style of music and I can guarantee we can find something you'll like! And if you lean more toward country music, you'll love Home Free! If you lean more toward show tunes, you'll enjoy Voice Play! I love ALL of them! These three groups are the cream of the crop when it comes to a capella! Just jump right in! We will guide you on your journey! :)
Just their voices, wow. You MUST show your Momma! Those combinations, the deep bass, chest thumping, then the womans soaring voice. "Foghorn" bass, warms your heart.
Stopped a little too much but glad I watched the whole thing!!! Great reaction and I love when people pick up on Avi's bass note at the end. I subscribed for more Pentatonix and hopefully someday Avi Kaplan's solo music!!
I normally don’t stop it as much - I set the record with this one but there was just so much…A LOT..it was so beautiful. Thanks for joining my new found adventure! ❤️
Most reactions use a transparent filter. You can still see the video, just not real well. Most of us have seen it numerous times. We come to see your reaction.
Never thought of Mitch’s voice as being similar to a violin! Great observation! He does have that crystal clear, high pitched, crying perfectly in rhythm with that vibrato…just like a violin. Mind blown! Thanks! And subbed for more PTX! 💛xo
Oooh... The Acapella rabbit hole. Now that you dipped your for in.. Check out more Pentatonix, and get started on Home Free and Voice Play the other two pieces of the Trifecta of acapella. 3 amazingly talented groups that each has their own style. I'd recommend How Great Thou Art or Man Of Constant Sorrow by. Home Free, and Nothing Else Matters. Or. The Little Mermaid Medley by Voice Play. You really can't miss with any of them.
That beautiful low note is by Avi Kaplan (beard and beanie) who left the group in 2017 and now has a successful solo career. Their earlier works include their versions of classics such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Little Drummer Boy, Mary Did You Know, Jolene (with Dolly Parton). Their medley of Daft Punk songs won them a Grammy as did their version of Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy, and many more, together with some fantastic original work. Since Matt replaced Avi, they have continued to produce some fantastic songs (you will probably love their versions of Amazing Grace, The Prayer and The Sound of Silence) and were again recently nominated for a Grammy. So much to discover!
I’ve been a Pentatonix fan since 2011. I still remember feeling what you felt, when I first heard them. They are so special and unique. They won the acapella contest The Sing Off in 2011 and one of the judges Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men was blown away with their wall of sound. Five incredible talents that blend so seamlessly and beautifully. They opened the 2024 Grammy’s this year with other performers. I was happy to see the three time Grammy winners get the recognition they deserved. They are equally outstanding in their live performances. I look forward to seeing the rest of your reactions. Glad you found them. ❤
Penta is the prefix for five. Since this blew you away you might also want to listen to another acapella group called Home Free. Between the two groups it is a very deep hole. Ave Kaplan from Pentatonix joined Home Free to do a rendition of Ring of Fire you would probably like. At a guess, you are also familiar with Johnny Cash. I can almost guarantee that his last video titled Hurt will break you.
Oh boy! New subscriber here. Can't wait for your journey down the Pentatonix rabbit hole! They are absolutely amazing and will blow your mind every time! Yes, you're Mom will love them. I'm 82 and absolutely adore them.
Welcome to the wonderful world of PTX! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! With your background in church music, I would recommend Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone as your next choice. 💖
I enjoyed your reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. They are magical and their harmonies are amazing. They sound just as amazing when singing this song live in concerts. They are always incredible. Thanks for the great reactions. I hope that you react to more Pentatonix videos soon.
Amazing a cappella can certainly take your breath away. Pentatonix, Voice Play, Home Free, and Voctave are (in my opinion) the best 4 a cappella groups I have heard. They are different in their preferred, or signature, styles, but equally gifted in their musicianship, vocal ability and dedication to their craft. You can't go wrong with anything you choose. Be warned... a cappella is a VERY extensive rabbit hole! Welcome to the warren!!! As someone else mentioned, these groups technically do "covers," but we think of them as "upgrades."
You cracked me up and are just adorable. I suggest you react to their 90's dance medley next. I would love to see your Mom's reaction to this. I'm now a new subscriber for more Pentatonix reactions.
I recommend going all the way back to their beginnings. There is/was an A Capella singing competition called "The Sing Off". Scott, the first singer, Mitch (guy in the hat), and Kirstin, all grew up together in Texas. In order to get on The Sing Off they needed two more singers. They literally formed the group for The Sing Off, and were on season 3 (spoiler: they won). This show is a great way to get to know them. You can pick any of their songs and I am certain you will love it. Bohemian Rhapsody will truly boggle your brain, as well as Daft Punk medley. Their Christmas songs are just soooo enjoyable. I have been really enjoying your Tom MacDonald reactions. Was surprised that you have not heard of any Pentatonix songs. I will very much enjoy your PTX journey.
@@thequestionqueens Best to start with their first performance and watch in order; it's fascinating seeing them grow over the course of the season. We'll fill you in on the drama that was going on behind the scenes, that influenced their decisions. And be sure to watch the videos that include the reactions of the judges (some of the UA-cam playlists have those edited out); the judges were all musicians themselves and everything they said was on point.
When you see the live TV version of them then you realize it is so real. OH and I can't wait till you get to 'Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone'. Though, I suppose you should hit 'Sound of Silence' and 'Mad World' before that. Perhaps you might like 'Bohemiun Rhapsody' too; be shocked.
This has to be the most honest, humble, authentic and emotional review of this video I’ve seen. Thank you and bless you. There’s a live version of this song on UA-cam and, believe it or not, Pentatonix is just as extraordinary live.
Great reaction. They do all their songs live! You are in for a treat as you react to many songs in their playback. Imagine, sound of filename, Havana, daft punk medley, mary did you know, the Prayer, many more.
Great reaction! I’m primarily into hard rock, metal, and alternative rock. I don’t generally like pop or acapella, but the way Pentatonix fuses the two creates magic every time. I love them.
Welcome to PTX! I discovered PTX many years ago and this was the second or third of their songs I heard and I was blown away. Just like you were. I still believe this is one of the most beautiful vocal performances ever recorded. My journey with them has been the happiest of my life and through them, I have met and had conversations with numerous wonderful people (Pentaholics are the best!) from all over the world. I wish you the same. Much love from South Africa!
"OK I'm gonna tell you my mind is blown". Welcome to PTX. I have been listening for several years and my mind is still blown now. They have that effect. Your reaction was beautiful. Thanks ☮❤
Nice reaction. This is a deep, magical rabbit hole. Pen tuh tawn Icks (playing like I know how to do phonics Lol the “Daft Punk” - their first Grammy “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Prayer” “Sound of Silence” “Come Along” Original songs “SING” “Be My Eyes” “Coffee in Be”
First time PTX listeners are a joy to watch, particularly when it's this song. In order of solos... Scott, Avi (replaced by the equally amazing Matt in 2017), Kirstie, Mitch, and Kevin making the beats. Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch grew up together in Texas, best friends who all have AMAZING voices. This group has been around since 2011ish. Something to know...when Avi does his solo for 2nd verse, it's Scott who sings that gorgeous bass line. He has a phenomenal range. Kirstie CAN sing, you are right! They are ALL super talented. Mitch delivered up his best "Mitch Slap" in this song. His high range goes higher, he is what's called a counter-tenor. Kevin is a beat-boxer, but... he can and does sing, plays many instruments, has perfect pitch and is very intelligent. He left pre-med to join this group. It worked out okay. LOL Finally, it's often said they do upgrades, not covers. SO TRUE. If you are not familiar with the song they are covering, listen to that first so you truly understand why it is they do upgrades. They have a bunch of original music too! Welcome to the rabbit hole. The Pentaholics welcome you. Suggestions: Imagine Say Something Sound of Silence Bohemian Rhapsody Can't Stop Us Now (10 years ago, but the versatility!) AHA! Singapore Live For another flavor of a capella, check out Home Free. They do primarily country music. Their beatboxer is insane! And the bass? Yikes! Man of Constant Sorrow Ring of Fire Butts Remix When a Man Lovs a Woman
I love seeing someone discover acapella! Pentatonix, Home Free, VoicePlay - all stunningly talented groups, but Pentatonix is the most popular and the most mainstream. Kevin, Pentatonix's beatboxer, is using body percussion here. So powerful with this song. But remember that the recorded soundtrack is not happening out there on that plain. Like all music videos, they recorded in a studio, and there may be multiple tracks and reverberation added and so on.
What a beautiful reaction! Watching you, watch them, had this old man a bit teary-eyed. Thank you for that...I feel the same way about this group. Please keep them coming!! They made a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" that showcases them individually that you might like. If not, they have an extensive catalog from which to choose. I hope you will! =)
Welcome to the rabbit hole, we call ourselves pentahocholics for a reason. Check out the sound of silence, daft punk medley, the prayer, royals, and you will love their cover of Mary did you know!
Their record label is very keen on blocking their videos, so a lot of reactors have to really blur the video. But do persevere down this rabbit hole. There are so many of their songs that you will adore.
.... and more astonishing, they do this live - it sounds the same! Your mum (I think you said) may also like their cover of Amazing Grace and The Prayer. subbed for more PTX (Pentatonix) reactions!
Pentatonix has been around since 2011. They have won 3 Grammy awards. The singers in order of appearance are: Scott - Baritone vocals Avi - Bass vocals Kirstin - Soprano / Mezzo Soprano Mitch - Tenor / Countertenor Kevin - Beatboxer / Body Percussion extraordinaire The name Pentatonix means 5.
Yep, just 5 people. PTX isn't the only acapella group. VoicePlay and Home Free are a couple other awesome ones. All 3 are worth listening too. I'll recommend the cover of We Don't Talk About Bruno(from Encanto) for VoicePlay, if you would like to check them out.
There is another Acapella Group Called Home Free, They are a Must See Too! Listen to them sing a John Denver Song, Called "Take me Home Country Roads. "
While you're climbing into the a capella rabbit-hole, you should also check out Home Free (primarily country, but they do pretty much all genres), and Voiceplay (the theater kids of a capella). All three groups appeared on the NBC series "The Sing-Off". Pentatonix, and Home Free won their respective seasons (Home Free actually beat out Voiceplay).
I'm always here for the Mitch slap, but this is the first whole-Pentatonix slap on the first song 🤣 Glad you enjoyed it.
Lol a saw a mitch slap I swear the person recoiled like they really was slapped
Lol. Me too!!!
Mitch slaps are the best. I live for them. 😂
Whole Pentatonix slap - love it!
Mitch Slap Rules
Cheers!
SOO much this..I literally giggled out loud..
More Pentatonix please
mitch slapped and kevin KO'd are my personal favs LOL
I am 71 and I have spine and lung cancer. I listen to Pentatonix every single day. Hallelujah and The Prayer being the two songs that give me the most strength to make it through the day! This is not to say that I dont love ALL of their music. They bring me peace and joy and goose bumps and tears of joy. Thank you for reacting to them, and Thank you Pentatonix for sharing your talent's with all of us!
❤️
Are you still with us?
I simply can’t wait for you to hear more from them. You’re not ready, but no one ever is.
Pentatonix has three Grammys and multiple platinum albums. They are also due to get a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 21 of this year. They are fixing to start another tour next month in Japan, then to Europe. They sell out major venues around the world.
Rumor has it - a movie!
Yes, I'm due to see them in the UK in May - this was postponed from last April due to pandimic issues...!
You pronounced it correctly. Yes, it's only five ("Pentatonix" means "five tones"). Please react to their version of Amazing Grace....it is beyond phenomenal.
I concur
Yes, also “Mary Did You Know”
They call themselves a "band," so you may as well do so also.
In this video:
• First verse: Scott Hoying.
Avi's replacement doesn't appear in this video, but I'll give you information so you'll recognize him when you encounter him:
• Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable).
Pentatonix is a great starting point for dropping into the acapella rabbithole! I recommend "Bohemian Rhapsody" from them!
I concur
And Imagine please!
Checkout my channel
Yes, both Imagine and Bohemian Rhapsody.
You were saying that they are the most magical combination of voices on the planet. Amen to that! And you hadn't even heard Mitch yet!!!
Gotta wait for the Mitch slap
Wait till you do Sounds of Silence or Bohemian Rhapsody.

If I could recommend some good songs to get a feel of what they do, I'd say :
- _Oogie Boogie Song_ and _Nothing Else Matters_ for VoicePlay.
In my household it ain't Christmas without Pentatonix. Welcome to the fold. Their catalogue is HUGE!
Brilliant idea for Christmas love it.
Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html
BTW: Pentatonix's recording company is very strict about protecting their IP rights, and copyright blocks are a common occurrence when reacting to Pentatonix.
Their Sound of Silence & Mary Did You Know are superb.
damn right!
Her mom is the right age for Sound of Silence. It’ll be great!
Yes! I play Imagine at least once a week and I was never a Beatles fan.
Now you need to hear Home Free. Another acapella group. I would recommend starting with "A Man of Constant Sorrow".
@@DennisKovacichGeoff is probably the lowest bass singer out there (that is at least decently well known at least)
No one upgrades a cover like PTX!
I’d recommend having your mother listen to “the prayer” by PTX with you. Talk about beautiful!
Or Amazing Grace.
Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
The founding members are:-
Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Thank you so much ❤️
Your southern heart will also love Home Free!
I got to see their Christmas show live and they were just as amazing. You are just getting hooked now. Try "The Prayer" next.
In 10 years 3 Grammy's and nominated for their 4th this year. loved that.
Welcome to the world of PTX. They are the best of the best.
I just subbed hoping to hear more PTX. They have over 200+ songs in their catalogue. Pick any. You won’t be disappointed. Great reaction. 💕💕
Feel like you’re of the age to really appreciate their 90’s dance medley and Daft Punk medley
You hit the nail right on the head "magic"Pentatonix is pure magic❤️
Subscribed.
I think we need to see your mom react to this with you!
I'll make you a deal. I get back home at the end of March and if she'll do it, I'll have her react on a video of them! She's gonna LOVEloveLOVE them!
If you want to see them do this LIVE, you will be even MORE blown away :-) Here's the link:
Hallelujah (Live Version) Dec 22, 2016: ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html
Yeaaah. Thank you, thank you. I am a woman from the netherlands. Loved seeing this❤️
The one who sang after Kirstie is Mitch. And you have just been Mitch-slapped. Welcome to the world of Pentatonix. We Pentaholics welcome you. 🙂
And...my absolute favorites for haunting harmonies are "My Heart With You", ua-cam.com/video/4Eo2_vkVTU0/v-deo.html
And "Light in the Hallway" ua-cam.com/video/xlppyBJhLnc/v-deo.html
But truly you cannot go wrong with any of their songs, "The Prayer" is phenomenal as well.
Enjoy your journey down the rabbit hole. Have subscribed to watch along with you!
Look up PTX sing off. This is the competition they won. You can see how the progressed over 12 songs.
I'm loving first time reactions to Pentatonix. I get to relive the wonderment through your receptive heart and mind. Thanks for a lovely reaction.
I concur
Also, frequent stops and short rewinds are one of the things that tend to prevent RCA from complaining to UA-cam about "copyright violations," so they can help keep the videos up.
It is possible
I am 76yo and I have been watching PTX for 5 hours straight! I'm addicted! Thank You God!
90’s dance medley PTX
Stopped a little too much but glad I watched the whole thing!!! Great reaction and I love when people pick up on Avi's bass note at the end. I subscribed for more Pentatonix and hopefully someday Avi Kaplan's solo music!!
I normally don’t stop it as much - I set the record with this one but there was just so much…A LOT..it was so beautiful. Thanks for joining my new found adventure! ❤️
@@thequestionqueens You will need to unless you put a filter over the video. Their record label (not them) are notorious for copyright strikes.
I concur
Oh boy! New subscriber here. Can't wait for your journey down the Pentatonix rabbit hole! They are absolutely amazing and will blow your mind every time! Yes, you're Mom will love them. I'm 82 and absolutely adore them.
I love it! "This is going to be great!" -- the understatement of the year! Enjoy the ride with another great group!
First time I heard this song I teared up. This group lead me to Home Free, another fantastic acapella group.
Welcome to the wonderful world of PTX! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction!
With your background in church music, I would recommend Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone as your next choice. 💖
I just love watching people discover Pentatonix for the first time. It just never gets old.
I cannot wait to see you react to more of there genius work! They never stop blowing my mind
I highly recommend you listen to Run to you if you want to hear the most hauntingly beautiful harmonies ever. Just incredible. You may cry
Try their Sound of Silence cover...then one of their originals, Love Again.
Pentatonix has won 3 Grammies
1 Daft Punk
2 Dance of The Sugar Plum Ferries
3 Jolene with Dolly Parton
CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU'VE JUST BEEN "MITCH SLAPPED!"🤣
You cracked me up and are just adorable. I suggest you react to their 90's dance medley next. I would love to see your Mom's reaction to this. I'm now a new subscriber for more Pentatonix reactions.
Thank you so much for your kindness. I’m out of town till the end of March but I’m going to see if my mom will do a video with me.
That sounds like an excellent idea.
Here is the first performance: ua-cam.com/video/9STdbGrfCLA/v-deo.html
When you see the live TV version of them then you realize it is so real. OH and I can't wait till you get to 'Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone'. Though, I suppose you should hit 'Sound of Silence' and 'Mad World' before that. Perhaps you might like 'Bohemiun Rhapsody' too; be shocked.
This has to be the most honest, humble, authentic and emotional review of this video I’ve seen. Thank you and bless you.
There’s a live version of this song on UA-cam and, believe it or not, Pentatonix is just as extraordinary live.
and a Pentaholic is born!
There are 4 top acapella groups that are on this level. Pentatonix, Home Free, Voice Play, and Voctave. Check them all out we'll be here to listen.
This was a PHENOMENAL reaction! I subscribed immediately. I cannot wait for your future reactions. I’m so excited!
What an awesome memory if you did reaction with your mom. Glad u found pentatonix....they are incredible
Wait until you hear the acapella vocal group "Home Free". I would suggest you start with their cover of "Man of Constant Sorrow".
Pen tuh tawn Icks (playing like I know how to do phonics Lol the
“Daft Punk” - their first Grammy
“Bohemian Rhapsody”
“The Prayer”
“Sound of Silence”
“Come Along”
Original songs
“SING”
“Be My Eyes”
“Coffee in Be”
First time PTX listeners are a joy to watch, particularly when it's this song.
LOL
Finally, it's often said they do upgrades, not covers. SO TRUE. If you are not familiar with the song they are covering, listen to that first so you truly understand why it is they do upgrades. They have a bunch of original music too!
Welcome to the rabbit hole. The Pentaholics welcome you.
Suggestions:
Imagine
Say Something
Sound of Silence
Bohemian Rhapsody
Can't Stop Us Now (10 years ago, but the versatility!)
AHA! Singapore Live
For another flavor of a capella, check out Home Free. They do primarily country music. Their beatboxer is insane! And the bass? Yikes!
Man of Constant Sorrow
Ring of Fire
Butts Remix
When a Man Lovs a Woman
Just subbed for more PTX please! And start a Pentatonix Playlist... The Pentaholics will love you for it!
It's such a joy to watch someone's reaction when, instead of just listening to the music, their soul is actually touched by it. Thank you!
Pentatonix has been around since 2011. They have won 3 Grammy awards.
The singers in order of appearance are:
Scott - Baritone vocals
Avi - Bass vocals
Kirstin - Soprano / Mezzo Soprano
Mitch - Tenor / Countertenor
Kevin - Beatboxer / Body Percussion extraordinaire
The name Pentatonix means 5.
Came for the Mitch Slap, not disappointed. 😂😂
There several videos of them doing this live. They are THE Most talent group today . 💗
