They shot this video and recorded it in one of their apartments in a closet for 400 bucks including the contacts. They renamed a category in the Grammy's from arrangement instrumental, to add or a' capella, so they could win for this video. They have won it 3 times now, most recently for remaking Joline with Dolly Parton.

You can't explain why Pentatonix is so good unless you are in on the secret: The members of Pentatonix are aliens and they communicate by using music. If you look carefully inside of Kevin Osolusa's mouth you will see an entire miniature alien rhythm section sitting on his tongue: A bass drummer, several snare drummers, a tuned timpani section, a bongo drummer, a conga drummer, and a cymbal player all live inside his mouth. It's just other worldly!! And it's wonderful.

Just a few days ago, Pentatonix was the first a cappella group to win a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
I agree, you need to watch their original Love Again. It is filmed in the same box style as their Daft Punk Medley. Cool costumes. One of my top 5 favorites! Also their cover of Gold by Ciara is a constant Mitch slap.
This is a medley of music by the group Daft Punk, who are legends in their own right. This was the song that won them their first grammy. They remain the only acapella group to ever get a grammy. They have three now. One for this, one shared with Dolly Parton for new and improved version of her song 'Jolene'. and their cover of 'Dance of the Sugar Plumb Fairy'. Yes, an acapella group got a grammy for their cover of an entirely instrumental song. If it wasn't PTX, you wouldn't believe it.

Daft Punk was a French duo that were known for their Electronic Dance Music (EDM) songs, and their futuristic outfits in their videos. They were around for quite a while - nearly 30 years, from the early 1990s to the early 2020s.
This mashup contains 7 Daft Punk songs - Technologic, One More Time, Get Lucky, Digital Love, Harder-Better-Faster-Stronger, Television Rules the Nation, and Around the World.

I have important context about this song.
Pentatonix had won the Sing Off and shortly after that Sony dropped their record deal saying there was no market for acapella groups.
They didn't give up.
They were running out of funds and spent 400 dollars on costumes and design and filmed this in Avi and Kevin's apartment closet and kitchen and made other You Tube videos.
The Grammys had to redefine a category so this video could be nominated. 1st Grammy win by any acapella group and even if you don't like the original Daft Punk (raises hand) you have to appreciate what they do in this from top to bottom and how they filmed and edited it. They can sing this live too. It is not just slick production tricks.
The other acapella groups we enjoy now would not be possible without the sheer grit ptx showed creating the market for modern acapella.
Added context... but lacking context. By the time they made Daft Punk, Pentatonix already had a new recording contract with Madison Gate. It was a small subsidiary of Sony that mostly specialized in soundtracks and had very little budget (hence funding videos with Patreon), but it was still a contract. Daft Punk going viral got Sony's attention though and is what got them moved up to Sony's flagship, RCA, where they have stayed.
Also, while the recording was all done in Avi and Kevin's apartment, it *was* professionally shot and edited by Fifgen Films. We were past the days of couch sessions self-recorded on Mitch's iPad.
After delving a bit into this youtube video making and editing - knowing what I've tried to do and seeing how THIS video was edited, just WOW! It's truly unbelievable what they did with this video. Hands down, BEST VIDEO!

You must have been told this already, but if not, this recorded in Avi and Kevin’s apartment closet and the video was shot in their kitchen! The budget was $400 with some extra in further editing, but that’s still amazing-and it won them their first Grammy! Oh, and Kev couldn’t tolerate the lenses, thus the goggles. You can see that Avi had trouble too; check out his red eyes! This is sooo incredible! They did this after being dropped from their recording contract from Sony. The Grammy resulted in their being re-signed!

These 7 Daft Punk songs are perfectly placed within this medley. They perform this live on tours. Scott, Kirstin and Mitch went to the same high school and were in several choirs together. Can you imagine being their music teachers? They must be so proud.

Daft Punk was a duo in the 1990s/2000s that played electronic music. They had another name but a music critic wrote about them saying "They sound so bad that it sounds like some sort of daft punk music". They took that name and were very popular for many years. This video is a medley of 7 of their songs. This video won Pentatonix their first Grammy in 2013.

I love your reactions! They all (Mitch in particular!) have incredible breath control! Watch their version of Carol of the bells in the 'under the stars' concert. He doesn't seem to breathe at all. Daft Punk were a French EDM (electronic dance music) band in the 90s and early 2000s. This is a medley of their biggest songs. Obviously the originals are all electronic and PTX are mimicking them with their voices and in particular Kevin's insane beatboxing and Avi's bass. I still think this is the best ever a cappella arrangement ever made - tying with their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. This got them their first Grammy and the Grammys even created a category just for them. It was recorded in a closet in one of their kitchens for around $400. I love how much fun they're having with this. So I'm not sure if anyone said this yet...but THE Grammy Awards actually changed one of their categories in order to give this song a Grammy.
You have a pretty advanced case of Pentaphasia. It's a term (Pentatonix + aphasia) meaning a PTX induced loss of ability to express speech.
Your "how are they breathing?" question REALLY gets significant if you listen to "Carol of the Bells" - in which Mitch seemingly doesn't breath for well over a minute while singing a complex vocal. This was their first Grammy, filmed in their closet for a relatively cheap cash outlay of $400 before they sent it out for final production. They even did a DJ-style "record scratch" in one of the transitions. If this makes you "bouncy" then listen to their "90's Dance medley." This recording shows their range, from Avi's super-bass lead in the "Television" segment to Mitch's almost synthesizer-like part in the "Harder-Faster-Stronger" segment.
And: daft punk is a band known for its electronic sound. This is a medley (or actually a mesh-up) of the most known songs of this band.

You may have missed hearing for the last 11 years but now you can catch up all at once - they have made about 200+ recordings and you can enjoy everyone of them without waiting for the next one to come out! AND there is Scott and Mitch’s side group called Superfruit that has some great content as well.

I'm assuming you've heard Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"? Pentatonix covered it and got a mention from Brian May, the lead guitarist.
There is a live version of this sung in a green room (before a show I think?) recorded on a phone. No mixing, reverb, no effects at all and you can tell that they can really do this live and they don't cheat at all. 95% of their songs are just them they just balance the mix and add reverb.
This was the last song on PTX Vol 2. It is a masterpiece. They were so good early on it was scary and joyous. The EP started with 'Can't Hold Us' and also included 'Run to You' which is an original 5 part harmony masterpiece that is heart rending.
We debate all the time whether or not they are human.

You will actually love that song in particular. Your previous reactions have been more of their "feels" songs, but they have so many fun ones as well.
