I have never heard them talk about this particular song, but their process is beginning with the bass and percussion parts through the song. Once they have that line down, they divide the solo parts. In this song I believe Mitch has the lead throughout. Then they add in all of the other parts around the main melody which Mitch is singing. There is a video, "Making of Evergreen" from a couple of years ago with them actually in studio which you would enjoy. You mentioned Matt being such a strong bass and he does an excellent job, but he had to fill the shoes of Avi Kaplan, whom was the group's first bass singer. I have never heard a stronger bass singer anywhere if you ever watch some of their earlier videos. Thanks for the reaction!!!
So they arrange everything together with Ben Bram he's known as the 6th member of PTX. If you want to see their process, check out the recording of Evergreen. Their last Christmas album.
@daniellemariesings You asked how they arrange their songs, @tylerbrownlee8554 has a great suggestion. Video can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/M60SKKkQLqo/v-deo.html
I concur. The “recording of Evergreen” is a video taken during the second of the two weeks they had to record the entire album. It was during Covid, so the time was much more compressed. It gives you a glimpse of not only Ben and how he does his stuff, but how each of the members contribute to their sound.
@@daniellemariesings - Do watch it! People who really know music get so much out of it, and I love watching their reactions. ETA: subscribed for more PTX!
This is the song where we prove that Mitchy is actually an alien with 4 lungs.....this song "Live" always blows you away. While they do tend to arrange things somewhat as a group, this arrangement is from back in 2014ish and it was probably Scott and Ben Bram who did most of this arranging. As they've grown through the years and learned, the arranging tends to start with a "loose framework" and then they as they work it out there may be changes as to who sings what/when in finality before recording.
they have just released a live version on vevo of seal's 'kiss from a rose'; its on their new christmas album. many think it is one of their best ever and kevin has a cello solo in it.
Joyful Joyful is available live (evergreen experience) and it's amazing. Another non-Christmas live performance that is amazing is the Popspring concert. 4 songs, 3 originals and the Michael Jackson evolution mash up. Both are SO worth your tiime. As for more PTX christmas music, I love their interpretation of O Come All Ye Faithful (arranged by Kevin), First Noel (so beautiful), and their new Cmas videos: Pure ImaginationXChristmas Time is Here mashup that has such gorgeous vocals and an original Please Santa Please co written by Kirstin and Kevin that brings all the perfect heartwarming holiday vibes. Hope to see you react to any/all of these!
If you haven't seen it I highly recommend watching their short film of the recording of their Christmas album Evergreen. It gives such good insight in their recording process and shows off their talents and perfectionism as a group.
I think at this point you're goal should be to see them live. I've done 4 shows in a year and it's so thrilling and that's putting it mildly. The video that you just watched was from their holiday tour last year and it was out of this world. Watching live videos is great but being in the building will blow your mind. Lovely reaction and I hope you will have a chance to catch a show 🙏🏾♥️
Their brand new original, written by Kirstie and Kevin, Please Santa Please. It is Live at a studio and is so joyfully Christmas. As always, great analysis and reaction.
I was at this concert. It was amazing! Also, to get a glimpse into their process watch The Recording of Evergreen. It’s a mini-documentary style video (filmed by Kirstie’s fiancé BTW) showing how they put together their 2020 holiday album in a time crunch coming out of COVID lockdown.
they have an amazing live version of their Daft Punk medley they did for a make a wish private performance with no microphones and was recorded on a cell phone
What I love best is the canonic entrances in the last third of the piece; that section is almost fugal. Also sprinkled throughout are hemiola sections which can be very difficult to articulate in an a cappella group! PTX does these things with ease!
Hi Danielle, I have one of your subs for a few years. It obvious that you are very schooled with music and I think it be fair to say that you really do understand more about music and arranging than most of us. You have more of a comprehensive understanding , if that is the correct way to put it. That being said, isn't there something kind of nuts about Pentatinox. They have a level of creativity that I have never experienced, and it most likely Scott that is sort the Prodigy to me as he does most of the arranging. . Your thoughts Thanks Danielle
Matt is probably "heavy in the mix" because their original version of the song was with Avi, who was also very prominent in the vocals. I second the recommendations for watching the live VEVO studio version of Kiss From a Rose - it'll blow your mind!
Just saw their Christmas tour in Charlottesville on Saturday. They sang for two hours. It's amazing to me that they can keep going for so long and sound so good doing it.
I think the music you were hearing (sounded more produced) after the song ended and the dancers were performing was pre-recorded; this was to fill space while they got set up for the next song.
That's hours of practice and honing your craft and just being awesome in general... They are the best...great video, Danielle... Keep being awesome...!!!...
LOL! Next was their Fleet Foxes cover "White Winter Hymnal." I don't think that transition was live at all, it was pre-recorded, but gorgeous! Great reaction! I love hearing from the vocalists/vocal coaches.
if you search for some of their previous live version of this song, they either slow down the tempo or couldn't catch up on their breath. now this, you can see how much effort they put in rehearsing and discussing the song.
As a former choir nerd myself, and the mother of another choir nerd, I recognize the Madrigal of the aspect of this arrangement! A style you rarely hear these days and it's wonderful! ❤️
This is from a recording of last year's Christmas Tour A Christmas Spectacular it's really good and if you can find it I highly recommend watching it all
Looks like they were going into White winter hymnal - a fan fave! I think their mix is a bit different in this one? You don’t hear Matt that forward in the other live versions I’ve seen (or Avi in the original recording). And even the ending where they are all doing separate parts sounded very different.
How have I not heard a reaction from you? Subbed for more… on their new album definitely need to listen to Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here and they even upgraded their upgrade of O Holy Night 🤯 And yes, live vevo version of Kiss From A Rose 🌹 is a MUST but can wait until after Christmas. Also, my favorite live performance that many reactors don’t react to is their original song New Years Day live 2016 on Carson Daly… would ❤ it for New Years… sorry for the long post 😊
They sit down for 'White Winter Hymnal' , so that was probably the next song. Their lives are just as good, if not better than their studio versions! Listen to Mr. Grinch (from the Evergreen Experience)!
Given that they were all seated in a row, the next song was probably White Winter Hymnal, which includes complicated handclapping - they clap each others' hands too, so being seated makes that easier (from Scott's 6 ft 3 to Kirstin's 5 ft 4 ... without her usual heels, anyway).
They originally began singing this song back in 2012 (with Avi Kaplan singing bass), and immediately the big question from fans was, "When does Mitch breathe?" There is also a live version of the gang from then, when they performed it on the CBS TV show, The Talk. The audio on that video is much clearer than on this tour version. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/O7BZxBj0Hm8/v-deo.html
Danielle, you stopped it so many times that you missed the fact that Mitch sang for 36 seconds on ONE BREATH!! Of course, you are not the only reactor that missed it. BUT there are some that totally catch it and are amazed by it! Watch it again without stopping, with a watch to time it and you will see. 🎶🎶👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤😊😊
Actually unlike the other performances years ago you can actually hear him breathe, idk if it's because he wanted to or not but we know he can got 36 seconds without breathing so.
@@Spidereyeplayz Mitch breathes before and after the 36 second part but not during it. Then he went back to listen and enjoy the 36 seconds without breathing! 😉😉👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
@@shanialover if we are on the same page, and we are talking about "hark how the bells" to "to every home" then in this live he was definitely breathing unlike the other lives where he fully did it in one breath.
@@Spidereyeplayz I am lost about you mentioning Hark. This is Carol Of The Bells! In both the old version with Avi and in the new version with Matt, Mitch goes for 36 seconds on ONE BREATH! Mith does breath before and after that 36 seconds in BOTH versions. 😉😉👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
@@shanialover I was saying the lyrics that in this this specific live video you can tell that he is breathing instead of singing it straight through (hark how the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say, throw cares away, Christmas is here, bringing good cheer, to young and old, meek and the bold etc) Unless your talking about a different part, but that is the main part that he would sing for 36 seconds straight but didn't in this one👍👍🫨🫨
They don’t record anything they can’t do live. No post production. The mics can be set to slightly enhance the sound, but there are never ant secondary tracks playing behind them.
Danielle, I realize you've reacted to their produced cover of Hallelujah, but their live version (ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html) is over the top. No need to react to it, although I'd love to hear your thoughts, but just have a quiet moment and enjoy. Their talent is just head-shaking.
