Kent refers to this particular design as his Rocker. A thick, rich, high output humbucker that retains the tonal quality of a vintage patent applied for yet has more drive and crunch. Great for rock and other medium to heavy gain applications and an excellent neck compliment to the WPU10. 4 conductor wiring allows coil splitting, series/parallel, phase inversion, and more.
Wow! Slabs of wood went into that guit. Love to throw that one into the 'Tonewood Debate' lol: Love the neck - 3 woods, beautiful maple in the neck. Loving it Phil! Keep it up buddy!
Customer: So I want you to make me a PRS, but like a bass, and less attractive, and use every wood you can find so I can get all the tonez. Oh and how about some EMG-ish PUs to top it off. Carl Thompson: Let me see what I can do Off course it sound great in Phil's hands. Oh well....they cant all be bursts. Great vid as always!
See that descending chromatic run over the A minor chord in Spiderman? That's the same one they're trying to sue Jimmy Page for on Stairway to Heaven. What dya think, right or wrong?
Yeah I tend to agree with you. But the top line in the stairway case makes it more clear cut. Whenever I listen to classical radio I hear stuff that has been ripped... I kind if presume everyone has done it for centuries!
Strange design because if those pickups are active then a battery compartment should be on its own and easily accessible without the need to take the front plate off but, active pickups would be a good option on such a thin body but I guess all that rosewood on the neck could balance the tone out to give it that darkness.
No need for all that man, he might just be young or couldn't remember the song name from the riff alone. Not everyone has heard it a million times, and I'm just glad people are still interested, especially these days.
Carl Thompson should do a Phil X custom! Right Right Right??? Thought so... Reminds me of the B.C. Rich Mocking bird.💩Oops said too much..... Chow bro... Rock out! 👏👏👏👏👏5 claps award! Sincerely: David Paul Rivera
I don't think that it would make much of a difference. Look at how many people put a bit of foam behind the tail piece and behind the nut to stop it from ringing out when they are recording but still have good sustain.
Phil is the man, what guitarist doesn’t love Phil? However, my wife... anytime she hears him she get’s annoyed, I think she thinks he’s one of the guys I go drinking with and always gets me into trouble or something.
I wish I could find a 1976 Marshall 2203. It pains me to see that Phil has messed with his so much. I wouldn't mind it if was a 77-81, but the 76 has an earlier version of the 2203/2204 circuit without cascaded gain. I think it sounds better.
it's not messed with. it was getting SUPER hot & I hate fans & a friend suggested putting a grill on the front for more air flow & it helped a lot. the inside is untouched.
I'm not talking about the BBQ grill, that just makes it look unique. I was talking about the extra inputs mod. Those 76 2203/2204 Marshalls are like a hidden secret of tone. They are basically a hybrid of the 1959 and regular 2203. A lot of them were converted to 77-81 specs, so the 76 is fairly rare. Its good to hear that the inside is stock.
yeah...those are just holes now. at one time there was a 2nd master volume & foot switch so I could boost solos but I restored it back to original shortly after. this is the best sounding Marshall I've ever heard. I tried 15 other mid '70's heads in 1 week looking for a spare but nothing came close. thx for the background on the '76.
Phil's drummer is KILLER! Love it.
Man no matter how much of a shitty day I have, this guy always cheers me up! Legend!
That spider man riff/song/jam sounds sooo good. Huuuuge Psychobilly feel to it! Nice Phil. Amazing!
Haha it really was great!
Surely the coolest uncle or dad ever :)
TGIF and a Fretted Americana video with Phil X!! Great start to the weekend :)
Phil X really kicks but, reminds me of the MC5 guys Fred and Wayne.
it's been probably 3 years since I've watched one of these videos, "carl thompson" in the title is a guaranteed view from me
PHIL - do some drop tuning stuff!
I could see some QOTSA tones flowing from this guitar. Please
I got super excited to hear them play Helicopter like the heading said, but have no problem settling for Live on the Moon!
Instant like before even viewing! Thats love dude!
Great sounding guitar! Any chance of some les paul juniors/les paul specials getting reviewed? Need some P-90 goodness.
They have a few LP specials and customs and a LP jr review just look up philx then LesPaul JR and you will find it and the others on the related tab
I wish every day were Phil X Friday. Phil should have his own Saturday morning kids TV show.
Love that Canadian Pronunciation Mahawgony Bawdy!!
U Rock Phil!!

What a great sounding guitar (and player and amp)
Like butter baby
That guitar cuts nicely in that mix!! Wow
Wow! Slabs of wood went into that guit. Love to throw that one into the 'Tonewood Debate' lol: Love the neck - 3 woods, beautiful maple in the neck. Loving it Phil! Keep it up buddy!
Phil makes my day, Thanks!
Just thought I'd point out that the song at the end is Live On The Moon, but advertised as Helicopter
The band bit at the end is just awesome as always. The Drills need to tour in Europe :)
Rock On :)
I hope bubbs is doin great , cheers from Australia
You should put Spider Man on the next Drills album.
Good idea right until Marvel wanted all there money from the Spiderman theme tune
that guitar and you of course!! ripppp!
That thing sounds awesome!
7:17 American woman... Just amazing !
Sounds fantastic
This vid is one of Phil's best vids or up there i reckon! It kicked some major flipping ass!!!
Carl Thompson is also famous for building guitars for Lou Reed
Yo Phil x I love your videos man so awesome because I like the licks you play
That guitar sounds great
Awesome video.
That American Woman tone was so freakin nice.
Carl Thopmson, all kneel.
Man...Phil X is amazing, but Dan is killer on the low end too!
Love love love it. Lots of hate about the looks, but I dig it. Tone is killer. I will agree that it may be too thin for many.
Well that's a beauty!
Phil you put the fun back in Rock-n-Roll ! Song request Triumph / Rock-n-Roll Machine. 1966 Kicks Ass.
That tone dang
Phil X cheers me up, -every time. Thanks Phil!! ;-)) \m/
really cool guitar!
Makes me think of Garcia's Alembic guitars when I look at it.
Kent Armstrong sure knows how to make a pickup!
Wait, you said they were playing helicopter at 12:20, but they played live on the moon...
Customer: So I want you to make me a PRS, but like a bass, and less attractive, and use every wood you can find so I can get all the tonez. Oh and how about some EMG-ish PUs to top it off.
Carl Thompson: Let me see what I can do
Off course it sound great in Phil's hands. Oh well....they cant all be bursts.
Great vid as always!
spidey kicks ass!
Hehe. You put Helicopter when that was Live on the Moon. Come on Dustin!! lol
yes.. Phil X strikes again...!! Beautiful Carl Thompson woodie...... bad Spider Man..LOL
Does Carl still make Guitars? I’d like a guitar made with his level of talent and artistry.
I caught that Rat Bat Blue riff at the beginning. I basically jam that riff everytime I pick up my guitar.
Strange design because if those pickups are active then a battery compartment should be on its own and easily accessible without the need to take the front plate off but, active pickups would be a good option on such a thin body but I guess all that rosewood on the neck could balance the tone out to give it that darkness.
Ooo lou reed guitar!
3:33 Diablo II ? :D
Damn!!! Cool Spiderman tune!! Hope it's gonna be on the new CD?
Awesome...
fuckin legend right here
Could you please play some Ritchie Blackmore licks on your next video, Phil?
That drumsound is orgasmic...
Any chance you could review some flying Vs! They are and always will be the coolest looking guitars
Love the sound and body, but hate the head stock. The Carl Thompson emblem looks like a badge!
Thats because its a badge of approval
Eb and F are to entirely different notes. They aren't enharmonic. I think you mean E# but even then there is a place for E#s i.e. the key of C#maj.
Simply the best!!! ;-)
For the look of the guitar, for most it's a hit or miss situation, personally I think it's sexy as hell,
I played a Carl Thompson bass once. I was not worthy.
I need those Spidey chords
Hey man, its Phil X. WHAT?!?..... Yeah, Phil X
Who plays this "spiderman song"?
Which guy from HIMYM? :D
S-Bomb not Woofed out at 5:55!! Yo what up Swear Squad????!!!
What's the name of the song he played after Spider-man when he said "Battery" ?
You mean that Led Zeppelin song "Whole Lotta Love"?
altitudes00
Yes that's the one, thank you man!!
ya, its a rare one....not surprised you weren't familiar with it......
wow
No need for all that man, he might just be young or couldn't remember the song name from the riff alone. Not everyone has heard it a million times, and I'm just glad people are still interested, especially these days.
My dad never sang Spiderman to me... Just told me: "shut up and get to bed you little shit!"
Fk yeah! Spiderman!! Cool jazzy PhilX version but you gotta hear the cover by the Ramones! Its one of my faves from way back!
Carl Thompson should do a Phil X custom! Right Right Right??? Thought so... Reminds me of the B.C. Rich Mocking bird.💩Oops said too much..... Chow bro... Rock out! 👏👏👏👏👏5 claps award! Sincerely: David Paul Rivera
It says helicopter before they jam but the name of song is live in the moon
Helicopter ×

Live On The Moon ⚪︎
10:32 Phil was going Boxxy on us.
Why is the headstock the size of a frying pan?
Why would the stop piece be so far behind the bridge?
That cant be good for sustain.
could be a reason for tunning or just for appareance. Seems that the guitar is not made for make a lot of sustain itself, but a great tone.
My Gretsch has something similar but with an old burns tremolo. Its got some seriously good sustain.
I can imagine that it gives you insane ringing when you try to play. You'd need an entire shamwow to stuff under that.
So one can play a little harp when bored with shredding ?
I don't think that it would make much of a difference. Look at how many people put a bit of foam behind the tail piece and behind the nut to stop it from ringing out when they are recording but still have good sustain.
"Theres no Eb its F"
way to go phil xD
F would be E# actually, he misspoke when he said their's no such thing as Eb.
So, are those active pickups or not?
I wanted to hear little wing...
man, this is the kind of guitar Lou Reed played
08:05 that is the reason you play guitar
How much is it?
Is this the guitar I found on ebay a while ago? :(
Ouch
+AdequateGaming Yeah, I saw it going for about $3000
Fun fact : les claypool of primus plays Carl Thompson basses
we had no idea
barryismygod Thanks I watch these guitar demos on mute so I didn't hear him say that like a minute into the video.
Silly FrettetedAmericana...helicopters don't live on the moon. =P
I just really want to like hang out with phil, that'd just be aawesome
PHIL YOU BEAST!!!! ok between us dude... you constantly on speed.. RIGHT???

Phil is the man, what guitarist doesn’t love Phil? However, my wife... anytime she hears him she get’s annoyed, I think she thinks he’s one of the guys I go drinking with and always gets me into trouble or something.
Can't wait to diddle the moon!

8:54 You're welcome.
“Bootleg, BBC, Boobies.” ROFL
Who thinks that they should do a cover of this song and put it in the new drills record
It's spiderpig!
Kent Armstrong Super Rockers (passive) humbuckers $54.
gotta learn me that spider man lol
