She was so natural here... talking about the experience instead of selling herself. And Johnny was very kind and appreciative as well. So sad to think - in January 2024 - that she's gone. RIP, Melanie. 😥
The thing that impresses me no end is that Melanie sits center stage with nothing but a guitar and her voice and silences ever voice with the power of her performance. Any performer that sinks or swims, literally on their own, is humbling to me. Melanie may just as well be naked out there and she pulls it off every time in splendor. I wish we could do the old days over again. If even for just a little while. BTW... Johnny had a remarkable knack for reading his guests and helping them brighten up and relax a little. He was really a fantastic host. Ahhh....the good ol' days.😌 😢
She is soooo much more and better then just "Brand New Key". And watch her left hand. She's got some good guitar chops as well, not just "folk chords".
Music had a meaning in the sixties and the seventies unlike today. Melanie is wonderful. She asked us to raise the candles high against the black sky after woodstock. And she wanted all of us to be beautiful people and for us to wear the beautiful people button to show common ground as human beings. And music today....? Lets be together....and raise the candles still higher as beautiful people.
The boomers? Really? Im a late one but have nothing in common with the most privileged, hypocritical generation ever! Most voted for Reagan in 1980! What happened to you hippies? Well now as at least 60% of boomers will retire with nothing? How did that voting for Reagan and the gop and their 'trickle down' theory work out for ya?
Her voice is one of the most beautiful, powerful and distinctive voices ever to be heard. Unmistakable! She could sing any song and I’d recognize her voice! That’s Melanie!!RIP Melanie 🕊️🕯️🌹♥️
@Pattie Noah My best friend (also a rock critic) did a late introduction of Melanie to me. Wowwwwww! Beautiful song by a beautiful young woman. VERY unique, and her style/look reminds of a bit of Linda Rondstadt and Alanis Morissette combined. But, I was REALLY blown away with how sweet a girl/young woman Melanie was in his clip. What an angel of a personality! You can tell that Carson was smitten with her, as well.
Seems Melanie was the "it girl" of 1963..., so it would appear from the interview recollection of the time they first had her on the tonight show. I probably first heard Melanie prenatally, maybe a little here and there as an infant...maybe a few times in elementary school perhaps...but what little chance she had4me2tune in...I seem2have not managed2unstick the wavelengthAAAAmoment..4210....you know, just one of those vibes you never forget but cannot place until a video like this one brings it back.
Pattie Noah I've been listening to Melanie since I was in junior high school. I'm 63 now and am so grateful to be able to see all these tv clips, videos, and international performances that us kids in the US probably didn't get to see until UA-cam. She was the original hippie chick who I looked up to as a teenager and her beautiful smile, huge voice, and sweet personality were always an inspiration to me. Still today, I'm finding new videos and be so uplifted by them. She is truly a gifted songwriter too. So Pattie, you're a lucky lady and thanks so much for sharing this video! You, Melanie and all your family and friends take care during this pandemic and stay safe! 🍀🍀😷🍀🍀
Dylan blew away the folk singers, but Melanie remains a unique voice in the troubadour canon. She remains true to her self, to her beliefs, a remarkable talent in a world so devalued in it's honesty, integrity and believeability.
Notice how quiet the audience was during her performance and how the set seemed so peaceful and relaxed. Those were simpler times. No need for flying logos, quick cuts, flashy special effects, or electronic noise to capture viewers with short attention spans. Instead they keep it simple to let one concentrate on the subject at hand, which provides a measure of depth and nuance that would otherwise go unnoticed and unappreciated. And Melanie was certainly worth it.
It was expected for audiences to be quiet. Polite or wild applause, as appropriate, only when there was a break in the program. I think it was the 80s when it became usual to 'whoop' and 'whee' and applaud whenever one felt the urge. An early sign of the breakdown of society, and I'm only half kidding. They're extra-quiet here because of the two special ladies on stage. Melanie is positively captivating. The other woman is Sandy Duncan, also a sweetie.
Boggy : I remember concerts in the early 1970s where the audiences screamed “Boogie!” through the entire performance. There were some bands where that was to be expected, like Deep Purple, but it got to the point where every show was full of downed out howling idiots. The Auditorium in Chicago wouldn’t even turn off the House lights! Its become way worse since then.
Just a H.S. sophomore then... We who lived those simple days were very lucky... Wish all teens now could have too... They just do not understand... I'm sorry for them...
It just occurred to me that she’s the female version of Cat Steven’s in a way. Without the same notoriety nor the same fame but in my view she more than deserves it! Rip Melanie! I’ll miss you in this life and hope to see you in the next!!
Melanie AND Sandy Duncan!! Two of my five year old crushes!!! She was class, too underrated. A beauty that matches Ronstadt and a voice with as much depth as Joplin....

Pattie Noah Absolutely! Her songs told stories, conveyed deep feelings, and sometimes had great drama and sometimes had great humor, and all wonderful. To hear her talk about how the agency told her she shouldn't play her guitar, wear a blue dress, and imagine all the young artists who were led into what "some professional" thought would bring commercial success reminds me of what a unique and strong personality Melanie must have had to be able to withstand the pressure that industry puts on young artists. Thank God she found her way through it all without changing.
From a truly more gracious age...both Melanie and Johnny...man I miss the 70s..if we only knew how great an age it was . rip Melanie...'some people say she did alright for a girl...."
At this point Melanie was simply unstoppable, nonpareil. As a woman she was beautiful. As a singer she could express in any note or key she needed. She was stunning in every way. We're just catching up with you Melanie.
She is a wonderful talent and an Icon of my generation. Her distinctive voice, and her deep lyrics are equalled by her beauty. She is one of those artists that only comes along once and is unparalleled by anyone.
Bob: So true. Back in the early 70's I listened to a friends LP of Melanie. The record featured the live version of "Leftover Wine." I was hooked from then on. Melanie's voice was so appealing with her beautiful, soulful lyrics. A true original of her generation, that we will never see again. A TRUE "Beautiful People" Woman!
Melanie isn't just "the voice of a generation;" she's the voice of all generations, especially those preferring love to war, sex to violence, intensity to blandness, reason to neurosis (now psychosis), art to routine, compassion to selfishness, music to gears' whirr, laughter to bellowing, purr to condemnation, and passion to repression; Melanie is what civilization is FOR, the making of " Beautiful People;" and I drastically hope civilization will one day soon actually understand or more importantly, feel, what really matters for life and liveliness. We're running out of time. Ohhhh How some of us would trade years to be at the Woodstock, Atlanta, or Isle Wight Festivals, rather than concerts charging $5 for a bottle of water and featuring robotic music. But at least Melanie still plays and plies her song, regardless of what the fanged philistines and hybristic hucksters tried to have done to it, MA, and will be a-coming this way soon. We need Melanie. Now as much as ever.
What a absolute blessing. A different time such a humble stunning and beautiful natural presence.lve never really heard her sing just stumbled across her on UA-cam. A very spiritual and calming voice. Amazing those days are long gone what a shame.
I always loved Melanie! The highlight of my childhood was seeing her at my older sister's college. I learned to sing many of her songs on my own guitar.
PattieLNoah so am I, I just love Rose Byrne and I didn't know why, but when I first time saw Melanie I realized why, this beautiful, sad eyes. Gorgeous
She was one of my earliest musical fascinations and, when I think back on it, my first (v. prepubescent) celebrity crush. And I guess my instinctual gravitation towards big-eyed women who show signs of being damaged started there (blah blah Elizabeth Fraser)
This is really amazing, how honest in every way. It's inconceivable nowadays, Melanie was awesome and I have to thank Johnny Carson for having her perform. And I ask, " how was this possible, Jesus"?
I have also noticed most audiences always show Melanie the up-most respect when she performs. I believe it's because she put her heart and soul in every performance, that just who she is.
Oh wow, she's so beautiful and charming and so down-to-earth! With all that success, she seems so grounded and humble. How can you not love a person like that!
I always loved Melanie's music and I hate to admit that this is the 1st time I have actually seen her "in person." How very sweet and OH so talented she is! This song struck a chord in my heart as I'm 63 - what a lovely young woman she was in this interview. And yes, Johnny came across at his best. Thanks so much PattiLNoah for resurrecting this clip from the innards of TV land videos.
Love Melanie and her art. I put her albums on the turntable every now and then and looked here tonight to listen the Lay Down Candles in the Rain, as song that always inspires and radiates hope. I met Melanie when she lived in Buffalo in the 80's in a couple social settings and she was very nice, although I think she was going through a bit of a rough patch then. I trust got through those years OK.
iused2BAfireman Oh, she lived in Buffalo lol! I left Buffalo in 1974 for Westchester County, NY and college. I returned in 1981 for a year or so and left again for basic training and the Army about a year later. Most of my relatives are still in the Buffalo area, but I'm in Vienna, Austria now. I loved Melanie so much if I'd known she was living in Buffalo, I honestly might never have joined the military lol!
I saw her in Central Park in the shade for a music festival. 14 years old. It was my first concert. I loved her then and I love her now I saw her twice in Orlando on church street with her two daughters seeing with her it was wonderful.
I didn't really hear too much or nothing about her for many years. She probably lived her life somewhat out of the spotlight. Like many, I've been looking at some of her old videos. Really sweet. RIP.
Always loved melanie back in the early 70s but really didn't realise what a talent she was singer songwriter you name it theres not many around like her now and she was a very stunning lady.
" YES " It is ! I used to listen to her as a young "Rocker" ( drummer ) There was something about even then (1972-73) that I loved then, (I was 10-11 years old)... She seemed so genuine. But her voice ~ She can REALLY belt it out when she wants to !
I first discovered Melanie with her 2nd LP, back in 1969 when I was in the 9th grade and I have been hooked since ... not only on her music, but on the person as well. Such a rare, genuine human being! Love you Melanie!
i am grateful for a man who has passed to the living light who brought his son and i to a live show in Saratoga NY.....i was blessed by the vibrations of the sound she produced.....let peace rain on us all.......let us change ....
talen, this is what made Johnny the best, he used talent like this and what I think we liked was he liked it as much as we did, I wish they had the second number though, awesom thank you so much
This is a lovely song. I was only familiar with "Brand New Key" until today, after hearing of her passing. It was q favorite song of mine as a kid in the 70s. What a wonderful artrist she was. Ill be looking tinto nore of her work now. RIP great artist.
I HAD THIS ALBUM!!!! No longer have the vinyl version wih all the tunes, but I do have many of them on CD... and still have the five frameable photos of Melanie that came with the "Stoneground Words" LP! What a treasure she was back then... and a cherished lady who still captures my heart with her music!
of course i immediately looked for the '63 video, no luck. she was so well composed and the song was amazing. why melanie isn't as popular as other female artists of that era is strange to me.
The world will be a bit less peaceful, without you Melanie... :( (Did Johnny refer to her as "Melody") -just before they went to a commercial break...? If so, no worries... :) Her first appearance on the Tonight Show in 1963, would put Melanie Safka right about the age of 16 (maybe) 17...I miss Johnny too, as he made us laugh, and gave-us a peaceful easy feeling... ;)
Thank you for sharing, Patti Noah... viewing this is bittersweet for me. Melanie is an Original and always seemed to be Sincere to me. I fell in love with her when I was about 8 or 9 the first time I heard 'Candles in the Rain' and still cry at the Passion and Beauty that Melanie conveyed in that song. Thank you, again for helping us remember Melanie...and Johnny Carson... We should all learn from them how important it is to Appreciate each other and no matter how diverse we may be, we always have an Opportunity to shine if we reach out and find our Common Ground. Bruno Biava ⚓
A beautiful song beautifully delivered by a beautiful soul... although in fairness I don't know Melanie well enough to fully recognise the beauty of her soul. It is a beautiful, poignant and touching song though and she is a very beautiful woman.
I WAS BORN IN 1962 SO EVEN THOUGH IM IN MY 50'S I HAD NEVER HEARD OF MELANIE, I KNEW OF HER SONG LOOK WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO MY SONG MA, I WAS ON YOU TUBE LOOKING FOR SONG'S TO DOWN LOAD TO MY I-POD AND I DECIDED TO LISTEN TO THE SONG BRAND NEW KEY, AND AFTER THAT I FELL IN LOVE WITH HER SHE'S ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE! AND YES HER BEAUTIFUL EYE'S JUST MAKE ME MELT, AND I AGREE SANDY DUNCUN LOOK'S LIKE A SCHOOLBOY IN DRAG
Love Melanie .. she was folk, after folk burned out ,, great 70's music ,, I have LP's.. and I keep my eye out for an LP at a yard sale .. love her ,, absolutely love her
I WAS HONORED to have met her at the Earle resturaunt in Ann Arbor where i was working....She returned two more times to play an intimate gig in a small church outside of Ann Arbor!!!!At first i was stopped from camcording but then Peter Shykyrk said i could if i don't put it on the internet! I kept my promise and never posted it.Melanie is a total rush in person!!!!! Her son,Beau Jarred Shykyrk played and autographed my guitar!!!!!!!!!!!Hung out with them after the show! she gave me her phone # . She once owned a resturaunt in San francisco. Beau Jarred u r a GUITAR GOD!!!!! When you played my guitar i think the good jinkies rubbed off on it!!!!!!
Such a beautiful young lady. The world is just a little bit darker without her gentle soul. RIP Melanie.
She was so natural here... talking about the experience instead of selling herself. And Johnny was very kind and appreciative as well. So sad to think - in January 2024 - that she's gone. RIP, Melanie. 😥

Yeah. Johnny has been unmatched since. But long gone, and now Melanie too.
I absolutely LOVE the dress she has on here. She was the perfect Earth Child. RIP
Melanie was such a wonderful person. So genuine. The world is a lesser place with her passing.
When real talent existed!!
She is soooo much more and better then just "Brand New Key". And watch her left hand. She's got some good guitar chops as well, not just "folk chords".

Melanie would never have consented to putting a person to death the way "Cat Stevens" did.
I always looked at her like a female version of Donovan 😊
Melanie AND Sandy Duncan!! Two of my five year old crushes!!! She was class, too underrated. A beauty that matches Ronstadt and a voice with as much depth as Joplin....
Rest In Peace, Melanie Safka! I am raising my candle in the rain for you!
That's when you know that you have talent
Just sitting there and strumming a guitar and singing with no enhancements and sounding great
Holy crap, she is so beautiful and talented. She is just stunning. I also feel like this song could have been released in 1995 and been a hit.
Or 2024..
She is the definition of a timeless legendary artist.. ❤️🎶
We'll grow old, we'll take care of each other
I'll be your sister, your mother, your lover
We'll be friends during changes of weather
Let's be together on our own
Let's be together alone
We're believers, we've been hurt by believing
Needing people, we know looking's not seeing
I see needs that might be answered by forever
Together on our own
Let's be together alone
We'll learn living, like the words of a good song
We'll learn timing, balance and rhythm
We'll make it music
I don't want to sing it on my own
Let's be together, let's be together alone
Let's be together alone
Repeat
We'll grow old, we'll take care of each other
I'll be sister, mother and lover
We'll be friends
I'm tired of singing it alone
Let's be together alone

I saw her in Central Park in the shade for a music festival. 14 years old. It was my first concert. I loved her then and I love her now I saw her twice in Orlando on church street with her two daughters seeing with her it was wonderful.
one of the first records I ever bought was Candles in the Rain. I've loved Melanie since that first listen to that beautiful voice
Freakin' Melanie! Gettin' me all teary-eyed with the lyrics of this poetic song. (sigh) Miss you sweetie...
Sorry to hear she passed. My condolence. She had a lot of talent.
See her LIVE, her VOICE is still extraordinary, powerful.
" YES " It is ! I used to listen to her as a young "Rocker" ( drummer ) There was something about even then (1972-73) that I loved then, (I was 10-11 years old)...
She seemed so genuine. But her voice ~ She can REALLY belt it out when she wants to !
I forgot about all the great talent Johnny Carson
had on his show.
Peter was beautiful indeed....xo
talen, this is what made Johnny the best, he used talent like this and what I think we liked was he liked it as much as we did, I wish they had the second number though, awesom thank you so much
R.I.P. Melanie
absolutely a beautiful woman RIP
I think every person there was completely choked up... I know I am, I absolutely LOVE her!
So sweet and honest :) an honour to discover her tonight whilst searching for loudspeakers....
Simply beautiful.
NEVER HEARD OF HER!!! Why don't I now about her? Shes AWESOME.
The world will be a bit less peaceful, without you Melanie... :( (Did Johnny refer to her as "Melody") -just before they went to a commercial break...? If so, no worries... :) Her first appearance on the Tonight Show in 1963, would put Melanie Safka right about the age of 16 (maybe) 17...I miss Johnny too, as he made us laugh, and gave-us a peaceful easy feeling... ;)
She's still out there singing her heart out. Hang on to those pictures, they're very collectable!
she is a one of the ''beautiful people'' she wrote about in her song
makes me think of someone i wanted but never had in my life....but someone i still cherish as a human being
Thank you for sharing, Patti Noah... viewing this is bittersweet for me.

A beautiful song beautifully delivered by a beautiful soul... although in fairness I don't know Melanie well enough to fully recognise the beauty of her soul. It is a beautiful, poignant and touching song though and she is a very beautiful woman.
So so Beautiful inside and out. Sings from the heart . Unforgettable voice. So so genuine 🌹🌹🌹
Melanie was my pre-pubescent crush and eventually became the namesake of my sister in 1973. They have both become women who I admire greatly in 2020.
