She was so natural here... talking about the experience instead of selling herself. And Johnny was very kind and appreciative as well. So sad to think - in January 2024 - that she's gone. RIP, Melanie. 😥

The thing that impresses me no end is that Melanie sits center stage with nothing but a guitar and her voice and silences ever voice with the power of her performance. Any performer that sinks or swims, literally on their own, is humbling to me. Melanie may just as well be naked out there and she pulls it off every time in splendor. I wish we could do the old days over again. If even for just a little while. BTW... Johnny had a remarkable knack for reading his guests and helping them brighten up and relax a little. He was really a fantastic host. Ahhh....the good ol' days.😌 😢

Music had a meaning in the sixties and the seventies unlike today. Melanie is wonderful. She asked us to raise the candles high against the black sky after woodstock. And she wanted all of us to be beautiful people and for us to wear the beautiful people button to show common ground as human beings. And music today....? Lets be together....and raise the candles still higher as beautiful people.

The boomers? Really? Im a late one but have nothing in common with the most privileged, hypocritical generation ever! Most voted for Reagan in 1980! What happened to you hippies? Well now as at least 60% of boomers will retire with nothing? How did that voting for Reagan and the gop and their 'trickle down' theory work out for ya?

@Pattie Noah My best friend (also a rock critic) did a late introduction of Melanie to me. Wowwwwww! Beautiful song by a beautiful young woman. VERY unique, and her style/look reminds of a bit of Linda Rondstadt and Alanis Morissette combined. But, I was REALLY blown away with how sweet a girl/young woman Melanie was in his clip. What an angel of a personality! You can tell that Carson was smitten with her, as well.

Seems Melanie was the "it girl" of 1963..., so it would appear from the interview recollection of the time they first had her on the tonight show. I probably first heard Melanie prenatally, maybe a little here and there as an infant...maybe a few times in elementary school perhaps...but what little chance she had4me2tune in...I seem2have not managed2unstick the wavelengthAAAAmoment..4210....you know, just one of those vibes you never forget but cannot place until a video like this one brings it back.

Pattie Noah I've been listening to Melanie since I was in junior high school. I'm 63 now and am so grateful to be able to see all these tv clips, videos, and international performances that us kids in the US probably didn't get to see until UA-cam. She was the original hippie chick who I looked up to as a teenager and her beautiful smile, huge voice, and sweet personality were always an inspiration to me. Still today, I'm finding new videos and be so uplifted by them. She is truly a gifted songwriter too. So Pattie, you're a lucky lady and thanks so much for sharing this video! You, Melanie and all your family and friends take care during this pandemic and stay safe! 🍀🍀😷🍀🍀

Dylan blew away the folk singers, but Melanie remains a unique voice in the troubadour canon. She remains true to her self, to her beliefs, a remarkable talent in a world so devalued in it's honesty, integrity and believeability.

  • @DickyHertz

Notice how quiet the audience was during her performance and how the set seemed so peaceful and relaxed. Those were simpler times. No need for flying logos, quick cuts, flashy special effects, or electronic noise to capture viewers with short attention spans. Instead they keep it simple to let one concentrate on the subject at hand, which provides a measure of depth and nuance that would otherwise go unnoticed and unappreciated. And Melanie was certainly worth it.

    • @boggy7665
      @boggy7665 7 років тому +27

It was expected for audiences to be quiet. Polite or wild applause, as appropriate, only when there was a break in the program. I think it was the 80s when it became usual to 'whoop' and 'whee' and applaud whenever one felt the urge. An early sign of the breakdown of society, and I'm only half kidding.
They're extra-quiet here because of the two special ladies on stage. Melanie is positively captivating. The other woman is Sandy Duncan, also a sweetie.

Boggy : I remember concerts in the early 1970s where the audiences screamed “Boogie!” through the entire performance. There were some bands where that was to be expected, like Deep Purple, but it got to the point where every show was full of downed out howling idiots. The Auditorium in Chicago wouldn’t even turn off the House lights! Its become way worse since then.

We'll grow old, we'll take care of each other
I'll be your sister, your mother, your lover
We'll be friends during changes of weather
Let's be together on our own
    Let's be together alone
We're believers, we've been hurt by believing
Needing people, we know looking's not seeing
I see needs that might be answered by forever
    Together on our own
    Let's be together alone
We'll learn living, like the words of a good song
We'll learn timing, balance and rhythm
    We'll make it music
I don't want to sing it on my own
Let's be together, let's be together alone
    Let's be together alone

We'll grow old, we'll take care of each other

Pattie Noah Absolutely! Her songs told stories, conveyed deep feelings, and sometimes had great drama and sometimes had great humor, and all wonderful. To hear her talk about how the agency told her she shouldn't play her guitar, wear a blue dress, and imagine all the young artists who were led into what "some professional" thought would bring commercial success reminds me of what a unique and strong personality Melanie must have had to be able to withstand the pressure that industry puts on young artists. Thank God she found her way through it all without changing.

Melanie isn't just "the voice of a generation;" she's the voice of all generations, especially those preferring love to war, sex to violence, intensity to blandness, reason to neurosis (now psychosis), art to routine, compassion to selfishness, music to gears' whirr, laughter to bellowing, purr to condemnation, and passion to repression; Melanie is what civilization is FOR, the making of " Beautiful People;" and I drastically hope civilization will one day soon actually understand or more importantly, feel, what really matters for life and liveliness. We're running out of time. Ohhhh How some of us would trade years to be at the Woodstock, Atlanta, or Isle Wight Festivals, rather than concerts charging $5 for a bottle of water and featuring robotic music. But at least Melanie still plays and plies her song, regardless of what the fanged philistines and hybristic hucksters tried to have done to it, MA, and will be a-coming this way soon. We need Melanie. Now as much as ever.

I met Melanie when she lived in Buffalo in the 80's in a couple social settings and she was very nice, although I think she was going through a bit of a rough patch then. " YES " It is ! I used to listen to her as a young "Rocker" ( drummer ) There was something about even then (1972-73) that I loved then, (I was 10-11 years old)...
She seemed so genuine. But her voice ~ She can REALLY belt it out when she wants to !

I first discovered Melanie with her 2nd LP, back in 1969 when I was in the 9th grade and I have been hooked since ... not only on her music, but on the person as well. Such a rare, genuine human being! Love you Melanie!

I HAD THIS ALBUM!!!! No longer have the vinyl version wih all the tunes, but I do have many of them on CD... and still have the five frameable photos of Melanie that came with the "Stoneground Words" LP! What a treasure she was back then... and a cherished lady who still captures my heart with her music!

of course i immediately looked for the '63 video, no luck. she was so well composed and the song was amazing. why melanie isn't as popular as other female artists of that era is strange to me.

The world will be a bit less peaceful, without you Melanie... :( (Did Johnny refer to her as "Melody") -just before they went to a commercial break...? If so, no worries... :) Her first appearance on the Tonight Show in 1963, would put Melanie Safka right about the age of 16 (maybe) 17...I miss Johnny too, as he made us laugh, and gave-us a peaceful easy feeling... ;)

Thank you for sharing, Patti Noah... viewing this is bittersweet for me. Melanie is an Original and always seemed to be Sincere to me. I fell in love with her when I was about 8 or 9 the first time I heard 'Candles in the Rain' and still cry at the Passion and Beauty that Melanie conveyed in that song.
Thank you, again for helping us remember Melanie...and Johnny Carson... We should all learn from them how important it is to Appreciate each other and no matter how diverse we may be, we always have an Opportunity to shine if we reach out and find our Common Ground.

A beautiful song beautifully delivered by a beautiful soul... although in fairness I don't know Melanie well enough to fully recognise the beauty of her soul. It is a beautiful, poignant and touching song though and she is a very beautiful woman.
