I am also Australian, but I was lucky enough to see Van perform with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1974. They couldn't find a seat for me, so they sent me down the front to sit on the metal railing that ran around the bottom of the stage, so my 'punishment' for not booking in advance was to have the best seat in the house, about 10 feet away from Van and his orchestra. When I heard her son died, I was praying for her and couldn't even imagine the overwhelming grief - then to hear of her passing, just so sad. Rest in peace dear Sinead. If you want to hear a hauntingly beautiful song - listen to her sing 'No Sacrifice' (Elton's original).
I think he tried to put her off, but she surpassed him beautifully. She sang the song better than he did, in my opinion, with feeling. He seemed to be dismissive about the entire lyrics by the way he sang.
@@MTMF.london I can't tell if you're joking here, but what the hell, I'll bite. He isn't "forgetting lyrics" he's scatting and doing improvisation, which he does all the time in his live performances. @@ocan1033 I don't think he was "scatting" - I think he was forgetting the lyrics and Sinead certainly didn't look at ease to me. I know it's his song and I've seen him do excellent live versions of it, but not this one.

When i see this legend Van Morrison giving up his platform and sharing great love and grace to this beautiful graceful and yes very shy Sinead just setting her foot into the grand arena i just see immense Irish Spirits & Love and he is peppy and happy and just jazzing it up and holding his hand out to her it is truth it is love this is the Irish way i have no way to say how i feel about her passing except that i do believe her spirit is out there with her son and they are together now she must have truly wanted to go flying free of all these earthly constraints here's to You Sinead ~ Flying free to the Heavens and Van no doubt has a heavy heart these days an im hopin he is being consoled for his great loss no doubt he needs great comfort and L O V E ~ Godspeed Sinead 💝
Two fearless artists get together and make it up with no prep and end up messing up the room. Just all in good fun. Sinead had kinda realized she was not the only unpredictable Irish singer around and found him to be hilariously punk in the moment. She had a laugh riot over that one! If you can make Sinead laugh you’ve done some grade A barrier breaking!
@@ocan1033 So true. It's kind of funny that during this part her career she was writing and singing such delicate graceful songs. And Van was almost like her bombastic unbridled alter ego. Anyways Letterman was courageous too, so many non-commercially viable but quality live acts booked those days and interviewed.
This put a much needed smile on my face, I heard Sínead mention Van in an interview & here they are, singing a beautiful love ballad, but Van made her laugh, being all silly, blah blah blah. Great old video ❤
I just listened to a podcast and she said that Van hugely inspired her that he was the instigator of her healing journey, in fact she even said he is her favourite artist of them all, you should try listen to that podcast it's mostly about her book rememberings, I learnt a lot more about Sinead from that podcast I'm so heartbroken truly I am 😢❤
The best of Ireland's music in the usa. What a wonderful & beautiful gift he (Van) gave her (Sinéad) to sing "Have I told you lately that I love you". ❤

What a beautiful duet VM , SInead and the Chieftains as backing band...The Irish Holy Trinity. Sinead was such a conundrum, beautiful, fragile, misunderstood and especially fiercely courageous. What a monumental loss

I'm so happy that this channel has the absolute anthology of popular American (ish) music from the past 40 years. Very grateful for David Letterman for hosting this library.
Even not-so-popular. Dave introduced me to Blues Traveler in 1991, long before they were famous. They went on to appear on Letterman more than any other band.
Sinead O'Connor spoke truthfully no matter the cost. Here is a quote from Steps to Knowledge to honor her legacy: "You must learn to value the true and not to value the false, and it takes time to learn to separate the two and to recognize them... How can there not be a way to Knowledge when it is your True Self." (Marshall Vian Summers, STK)
Lovely! Brought a tear to my eye. My wife and I have seen Van 18 times over the past 19 years. Had the occasion to talk with him and get his autograph in his book, "Lit Up Inside." He kindly indulged me for a few minutes. Even asked about the spelling of my wife's name, "Cathy". Is it a "C" or a "K"? Perfectionist!
Every once in a while we are lucky enough to hear a piece as it develops as we watch. Such is the case here . This is a beauriful off the top jazz version of a great song. Thanks for this
I guess everybody has their own tastes, but I just don't understand people who don't love this. I guess I've watched this about 100 times at least since Dave posted it after Sinead's passing. Yes, there is Van singing blah, blah, blah, but if one ever heard him live this was not unusual as he often interjected jazz scat singing into his vocals. One will notice that he does this in the same place in the song earlier after the lines: There's a love that's divine And it's yours and it's mine And it shines like the sun This part of the lyrics of Van's song always reminded me of the verse attributed (perhaps apocyraphally) to Hafiz, the medieval Persian poet, in the poem "The Gift": “And still, after all this time, The sun never says to the earth, "You owe Me." Look what happens with A love like that, It lights the Whole Sky.” And this verse has long seemed to me to be perhaps one of the reasons Nietzsche brought back the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra to teach about the further evolution of humanity in which this transformation is suggested in the imagery of the sun, being capable of a love that is a gift rather than an investment. Nietzsche does praise Hafiz in his writings and thus I think the poem by Hafiz influenced Nietzsche in writing Zarathustra. Can we ever become capable of this love that shines like the sun, always giving its light without asking for a return? Maybe that is the love that is divine, and is thus able to Fill my heart with gladness Take away my sadness But what I really love about this, and the reason I keep playing it over and over, is Sinead's voice. I love Van Morrison, and the Chieftans, but when her voice kicks in at the 2nd verse this becomes something really special. When I think of the sadness she experienced in her life, the sadness her son must have felt to take his own life, and then her sadness at the end, it all makes this song so much more profoundly poignant. I think the whole point of this life, maybe, is not about escaping this world of sadness to another world, but rather feeling at least in one moment in this life this love that shines like sun. She sure had a lot to overcome in her life, and her legacy will be her courage even more than her music, but I watch this over and over again to hear her voice, and her laughter, and to see her smile at the end which lights up the whole sky. Thank you for this wonderful gift Sinead.
I love this collaboration between Van, SInead and the Chieftans. Just absolute perfection. SInead passed away too young. What a talent and again a wonderful performance.
That was fascinating. Sinead seemed nervous & a little serious. Van was light & fun. It seemed like Van was trying to loosen things up. It was beautiful how he moved towards her & sort of embraced her at the end. Her smile always takes me aback.

That filled my heart with gladness and her smile took away my sadness.
Sinead had such a pure beautiful voice. She was able to keep up with Van, which must be so hard to do since he never sings a song live twice.
Hi...what do you mean he never sings a song live twice ???
@@jacquelinepaul9731 Yeah, wtf did she mean by that, lol. And even so, why would be so hard for her? :p
@@jacquelinepaul9731 I think she meant "he never sings a song live the same way twice"
@@seanworthington4086
Thar must be very difficult as hes sung it loads of times
I think he tried to put her off, but she surpassed him beautifully. She sang the song better than he did, in my opinion, with feeling. He seemed to be dismissive about the entire lyrics by the way he sang.
Good to see Sinead smiling and laughing at the end. RIP Sinead.
Ah fek....that was something special...love how Van makes her laugh..
Real the sun shines in rain
She was right about a few things. Now we and the World is starting to know ...
Bless here heart. ❤
If you know what I mean
What a beautiful and torched soul she was, love her music and Van is pretty special too.
Some straight up Irish soul going on right there. Van's rare ebullience in Sinead's company says a lot. God Bless her sensitive soul.
I don't know - I think he was being difficult and forgetting lyrics was not professional at all.
@@MTMF.london I can't tell if you're joking here, but what the hell, I'll bite. He isn't "forgetting lyrics" he's scatting and doing improvisation, which he does all the time in his live performances. Not that Van can't be difficult, but he was genuinely enjoying himself here and trying to put her at ease. It's his song to play around with. despite Rod making a killing with it.
@@ocan1033 I don't think he was "scatting" - I think he was forgetting the lyrics and Sinead certainly didn't look at ease to me. I know it's his song and I've seen him do excellent live versions of it, but not this one.
@@MTMF.london Well then he forgets lyrics nightly and still somehow sells out show after show to this day. It's called live performance. Not my favorite rendition here but a true moment between the two of them and she spoke fondly of it afterward.
@@MTMF.london Van was doing the "dirty old man" thing. He was so obviously enamored by Sínead that he quite forgot the world was watching. Van was more "Pan" than "Van"
This has to be the most beautiful and special thing I've ever watched on UA-cam! Just so pure and beautiful! It remind me of times gone by and beautiful and pure life used to be. True beauty lies in the most simple of pleasures!
Anyone with vision and wisdom is frowned upon, cause most people ❤ can't see that far. She was genuine
May you travel on in peace and grace.
What a charming performance this was, wonderful that we can see and hear this right now ! Thank you
When i see this legend Van Morrison giving up his platform and sharing great love and grace to this beautiful graceful and yes very shy Sinead just setting her foot into the grand arena i just see immense Irish Spirits & Love and he is peppy and happy and just jazzing it up and holding his hand out to her it is truth it is love this is the Irish way i have no way to say how i feel about her passing except that i do believe her spirit is out there with her son and they are together now she must have truly wanted to go flying free of all these earthly constraints here's to You Sinead ~ Flying free to the Heavens and Van no doubt has a heavy heart these days an im hopin he is being consoled for his great loss no doubt he needs great comfort and L O V E ~ Godspeed Sinead 💝
This is the way I will ALWAYS remember Miss O’Connor… Rest Well Sister…
I just looked around
Love the tin whistle!! Sinead, a unique soul. 🎵🎶🎵
Sinead saved the song! Naturally and intuitively
Solid take. What this lacks in musical coherence it makes up for in spontaneity and affection.
I just listened to a podcast and she said that Van hugely inspired her that he was the instigator of her healing journey, in fact she even said he is her favourite artist of them all, you should try listen to that podcast it's mostly about her book rememberings, I learnt a lot more about Sinead from that podcast
I'm so heartbroken truly I am 😢❤
Which podcast? Thanks

How wonderful Irish gold, they have such a great love for their music..
The best of Ireland's music in the usa. What a wonderful & beautiful gift he (Van) gave her (Sinéad) to sing "Have I told you lately that I love you". ❤
Oh my goodness. That was just lovely. 🌺 I can’t express how much I loved watching this made me smile and be filled with happiness. She was shy and he was trying to help her relax. Very authentic 🕊️
What a beautiful duet VM , SInead and the Chieftains as backing band...The Irish Holy Trinity. Sinead was such a conundrum, beautiful, fragile, misunderstood and especially fiercely courageous. What a monumental loss
*WHENEVER I SEE SINEAD SMILE, IT BRINGS TEARS OF JOY TO ME ALONG WITH THE DEEPEST LONGING THAT SHE WAS STILL HERE WITH US. SHE HAD EYES THAT WERE SO FULL OF AGONY & YET THE MOST SOULFUL AT THE SAME TIME. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
omg - I didn't need reminding of how absolutely beautiful her voice is, but geeze Louise, it slapped you in the face here... dear, dear person and strong champion for so many...
Unusual but wonderful rendition. "You fill my life with laughter", that's just what Van does, making Sienad and the Chieftains laugh :-)
Amen ✨️ very correct 👏 🙏 😊
Great performance of two wonderful voices! And extraordinary Chieftains
Two awesome gifted people with my favourite song...they both had fun singing that...a great duet
It is not the duet of duets, but I love it. I was already into Van and I bought a record from Sinead. So beautiful to listen to.
I'm so happy that this channel has the absolute anthology of popular American (ish) music from the past 40 years.
Very grateful for David Letterman for hosting this library.
❤
Even not-so-popular. Dave introduced me to Blues Traveler in 1991, long before they were famous. They went on to appear on Letterman more than any other band.
Sinead O'Connor spoke truthfully no matter the cost. Here is a quote from Steps to Knowledge to honor her legacy: "You must learn to value the true and not to value the false, and it takes time to learn to separate the two and to recognize them... How can there not be a way to Knowledge when it is your True Self." (Marshall Vian Summers, STK)
Thank you for sharing. This is powerful ( to me) 🌺 all the best to you
Thanks for sharing.
Her voice is the voice of an angel!
What a gem of a performance. Thank you for sharing this.
Every once in a while we are lucky enough to hear a piece as it develops as we watch. Such is the case here . This is a beauriful off the top jazz version of a great song. Thanks for this
Irish Pride 🇮🇪 ! RIP Sinead
The lady x 3
👏👏👏👏👏🙏💙
I guess everybody has their own tastes, but I just don't understand people who don't love this. I guess I've watched this about 100 times at least since Dave posted it after Sinead's passing. Yes, there is Van singing blah, blah, blah, but if one ever heard him live this was not unusual as he often interjected jazz scat singing into his vocals. One will notice that he does this in the same place in the song earlier after the lines:
There's a love that's divine
And it's yours and it's mine
And it shines like the sun
This part of the lyrics of Van's song always reminded me of the verse attributed (perhaps apocyraphally) to Hafiz, the medieval Persian poet, in the poem "The Gift":
“And still, after all this time,
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe Me."
Look what happens with
A love like that,
It lights the Whole Sky.”
And this verse has long seemed to me to be perhaps one of the reasons Nietzsche brought back the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra to teach about the further evolution of humanity in which this transformation is suggested in the imagery of the sun, being capable of a love that is a gift rather than an investment. Nietzsche does praise Hafiz in his writings and thus I think the poem by Hafiz influenced Nietzsche in writing Zarathustra. Can we ever become capable of this love that shines like the sun, always giving its light without asking for a return? Maybe that is the love that is divine, and is thus able to
Fill my heart with gladness
Take away my sadness
But what I really love about this, and the reason I keep playing it over and over, is Sinead's voice.
I just love how Van almost kissed her, and then applauded her at the end.
Van the Man. My absolute favourite. Brilliant musician and song writer. Sinead had an absolutely beautiful voice.
Thank you for this. Van breathes life into my soul. Sinead is the angel on his shoulder.
I love this collaboration between Van, SInead and the Chieftans. Just absolute perfection. SInead passed away too young. What a talent and again a wonderful performance.
Like a jolly black rain cloud and a shy rainbow dancing about some emerald valley outside of time.
Beautifully put!!!!
Wow...Sinead....how sincere....how utterly heavenly beautiful...
This TOTALLY filled my heart with gladness. Thank you!
Can't watch her without bawling.❤
Y real hav fun x
When she laughs, my heart soars, and the sun anyway.
He made her smile letting her know aint nothing too serious being up there lets have a laugh and enjoy ❤🎉
We love you Sinead. We are proud of you. We'll miss you.
Miss Sinead O’Connor
Love this duet - Van Morrison & Sinead O’Connor.
They fit together - love it
That was fascinating. Sinead seemed nervous & a little serious. Van was light & fun. It seemed like Van was trying to loosen things up. It was beautiful how he moved towards her & sort of embraced her at the end. Her smile always takes me aback.
la rencontre d'une légend et d'une voix un moment rare ♥
Sounds so emotional after all these years, death is always so cruel, unfair, so painful losing someone dear, such a huge loss
This is a beautiful performance. Van Morrison brings out a very rare smile from Sinead O'Connor. How wonderful is that?
RIP Sinead. So nice to see her here happy and smiling. xx
