I was a teenager at that time. My daughter was born in 1980. I named her Melanie after this singer.
She was an amazing talent, maybe the most underrated artist of her era. Great voice, crazy vibrato and performed with sick passion. Long live Melanie Safka!
She still is Mike!😊
@@sandrise1 Yep!
Yes she was an amazing talent and wonderful that she left so much legacy for us all to enjoy!
RIP Melanie ❤
She got her hits, Nick Drake was more underrated than her.
Beautiful soul! So sweet and beautiful! I totally agree!
Her raw talent and honest songwriting combined with her rare beauty is such a great combination.
Rest in Peace, wonderful Melanie, I loved you so! May God be with your family, you are with him now.
She's one of a few female vocalists that haven't sold their sole. She's a brilliant person who sings brilliantly.
Which ones did?
@@SHARON.I Miley Cyrus and Madonna, to name 2.
@@Qrayon they aren't from her Era. So what's your definition of a soul that sells out?🤔or just a soul?
@@SHARON.I One who joins the Club.
@@SHARON.I Bob Dylan. Ever notice he can't really sing? That rich TV hostess. Ellen & Oprah. It also helps being women AND one is lesbian and the other black.
How cute and wonderful was she? RIP Melanie
I went all by myself to see her in concert back in 1972...I'm so glad...she's a living doll with a mystical streak...and may I say, echoing all of you,...she's beautiful...she looks like a doll!!
She is too good for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Exactly, why push for it?
RIP Melanie 2024 😢🙏🏻
what a rare gift to see this gifted singer and songwriter being interviewed. She is so lovely.
Can you imagine a musician showing their home address to a television audience today? Wow.
Love Melanie. What a great voice she has. Been a fan since 71. ❤️
I love this odd-ball. Beautiful to look at and a beautiful voice to match
Such a little child's voice & such a great big heart. Her voice was so plaintive, so high on life. She was everybody's little soul sister. Makes me cry everytime I hear her.
Can't believe how young she looks amazingly beautiful, glad she still performing.
You DO realize this was from 1991 so almost 30 years ago, right? LOL
Turned into a barge ass, dead at 76 is crap.
I have every single LP from the Beatles, Simon and Garfield, and Melanie.. I listened to Melanie more than any other. Can't believe she is not better appreciated...the voice, the writing,...the voice.
She hinted at it. She was a performer in that time period, but not into all the cultural trends and habits.
I don't remember Simon & Garfield.
I love her song Peace will come.
I protested Viet Nam in high school.
But also had a cousin who was there.
So I understand the support of our troops yet not necessarily supporting war.
Look what they've done to my song is a great song. But she has so many others worthy of listening to.
If you love "Peace will Come", check out her duet with Miley Cyrus from a few years ago. Miley did a series of "backyard" concerts to raise money for her foundation, and their voices blend together amazingly. Wasn't a big Miley fan before stumbling upon it, but she knows what she's doing. It's like listening to 2 Beautiful People from different generations finding each other.✌
Melanie influenced me to become a vegetarian in the late 1960s. She gave it up after seven years? I hung in for 12.
At a point I owned 17 different vinyl LPs, with duplicates of some of them.
RIP Melanie, you've been a big part of my life.
Nothing oddball about Melanie, a great sense of fun with a heart, and made light of difficult times, and always sang with a smile, while delivering a message,
Melanie did the best cover of Ruby Tuesday I preferred even to the Stones original.
bruce pennycook it had more success than the Stones version, that's why Mick was jokingly jealous
bruce pennycook same with Lover's cross by Jim Croce. Melanie nailed it perfectly
@@tonybarfridge4369 Hauntingly heartbreaking. 💔
I was so bowled over when I first heard her sing Ruby Tuesday...one of my all time favourites. What a voice!! And Melanie is so lovely to look at and to listen to. Long live Melanie!!
I feel the same way about it.
This woman is rock solid. Godspeed, Melanie!
Side of a mountain, that's y she's dead at 76
She’s was beautiful and natural and still these years later .they were some fantastic artists in those days
This is one of my heroes. All my life and still now, she is my favorite singer.
Never saw Melanie interviewed, but enjoyed her music way back in the 70s. I bought Brand New Key on a 45 when it came out. She's very accomplished and talented. I knew her music, but didn't know her. Thanks for posting this. I now know her better. God bless Melanie. RIP
She still sings beautifully, and she’s still gorgeous!
A real treasure is Melanie.
She's such a genuinely nice person and still looks great.
You wait until you see her now!
@@stephenfox6854 You obviously don't know the Beautiful People, and missed her message completely. Too bad for you. Karma listens when you're a conduit of negatively. Be careful.✌
@@misfittoy327
Not bad for me at all. You need to choose your friends carefully. You don't want to choose the wrong sort. Make sure the door doesn't hit you on the way out.
@@misfittoy327
Beautiful People are merely a figment of someone's warped imagination. Melanie is merely a cartoon character, a tool that allows this absurdity to happen.
So Glad I stumbled across this interview. I now know their is so much more depth than I ever realized to this wonderful person and I can enjoy her output of music that much more!! Being a VietNam era Vet I say GOD BLESS US ALL. TKS to whoever posted this... And now I;m off to listen to Brand New Key again..
Her voice and personality are beautiful. Xxx
I love(d) Melanie. Her music was so down to earth.
Thank you Ian for uploading the complete video! Melanie, you're truely the most beautiful soul, and thank you for sharing your stage personality with us.
more like one of the few who didn't get completely screwed by the musick buis.
Went to a concert in Manchester 1972 never forgot it, she had a sore throat from the previous concert but continued and was magnificent. So happy to see all this on You Tube so many memories
RIP, sweetheart - thank you for spreading love and joy!
I remember Melanie a the Isle of Wight Festival. I was working backstage and she was sitting alone of the grass and she spoke to me as I went past. Most of the 'stars' were stoned, cagey or aloof in some way but she was just rea, maybe a little lostl. I think that refusal to play their game put her out on a limb somehow. I love it when people discover her now and can't believe what they are hearing. Eva Cassidy had a lot in common with her.
That is my guess.
What a peaceful, loving person!
Forever our flower child!!!
Thanks Melanie!!
Melanie Thanks for being in our lives.
My husband was a Vietnam veteran. He recently died from cancer due to exposure to Agent Orange. I miss him terribly. Those who served there went through hell, and many are still suffering today. I wish that war had never happened. My husband did not like Jane Fonda, but we both love Melanie. She's a lovely person inside and out. She is so real and humble with a marvelous sense of humor. Her music is amazing!
A great, great talent who will be so very missed. (Melanie was one of Johnny Carson’s very first guests and he just loved her singing…invited her back). Very sad day for me.
i loved her in the 70,s, have just rediscovered her, so happy,
So glad you have! Have you checked out her official UA-cam channel? There's a wealth of great material, mainly live, there.
Melanie still lookin good baby thanks for the memories
She should be in the rock n roll hall offame.
She didn't take enough drugs.
She is my hall of fame.. what a woman 💖
She had so many good albums while others only had one or two - and they got in. It seems that you have to be cool at the time.
@@stevenvox6549 cool meant a decadent lifestyle.
Never heard of her.
Love the hamburger story. She is completely genuine
Outstanding I can’t believe I missed this talented beauty . I got a lot of catching up to do!
Love, love, love this woman
She was a good egg. Rest in peace girl.
Even though she was a bit cracked, we all loved her (us fans) 😅
Jewel became a nominal star around the X of this shows broadcast. Melanie was Jewel 20 yrs earlier.
LOST HER IN THE RAIN REMASTERED (🌧)2006 😢❤
She had dozens of great songs like Lay it all down.
I think the name of it is Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) - I never knew the exact name myself.
She was and IS..."an amazing talent"! I can also attest to her shy humility.
Way back in 1971, "Brand New Key" came out, and it was ALL OVER 1970's AM radio. My mom owned, and loved, Melanie's "Candles in the Rain" LP and played it all the time. At the time, my mom was working in the Records and Tapes department of the local K-Mart (remember THEM?!) I remember my dad cranking up Led Zeppelin while we waited in the car in that winter cold parking lot, and I still remember her and my dad talking about her shift that night, and my mom would say, "Well, another night of pissed off people furious that we're sold out of BOTH "Brand New Key" and "Me and Bobby McGee," I will never forget that!
About 2 years ago, it was announced that Melanie would be coming to Columbus, OH, where we live, so OF COURSE my partner and I got the tickets and we went.
So, as we're waiting in the basement lounge for the show, I can't help but watch the guys setting things up, and one of those guys looks a lot like Melanie's son, Beau Jared, and it was! He stopped right next to our table to discuss details with security, so I realized that I would literally be right next to her as she exited the stage!! As he walked past our table, I actually met and spoke with Beau!
Long story short, the show was great, and Melanie's sense of humor was great, but the best part was when, after the show, they all walked right up next to our table; having anticipated this, I jumped up, OF COURSE, when Melanie was about to be right beside me, and Beau reached over to shake my hand while introducing me to his mom, MELANIE! I told Melanie that I was a huge fan since 1970, and she just stood there, smiling, but also appearing a bit nervous and uncomfortable, so right after I involuntarily hugged her, I stepped aside to give her the space she clearly needed. She was indeed....so very shy and unassuming! We all love you, Melanie!
" little bit of me " ALWAYS makes me weep beautiful song !
Support the troops. This is part of what makes Melanie so cool.
god she is beautiful
I meet her in person and got to hug her! I couldn't talk for a few minutes I was just looking at her like she was a vision come to life. I am so blessed to have had her music in my life, I called the record stores almost weekly to see if she had any new 45's or Lp's out. Love love love that Lady.
perfect name for the comment!
Cindi Lauper borrowed heavily from Melanie’s singing style. I’m sure Melanie was flattered
I never thought about it but yes that seems true.
Amazing artist and songwriter!!
Gorgeous lady with a big voice.
Bigger arse
Melanie is missed!!! Great singer/guitarist!!!
thank you Ian, beautiful!!! Love you Melanie, always and forever!!!
RIP Melanie ❤
she's a sweetheart.
Maybe saved my life when I was 14 back in '71. Hard time, special song. Thank you.
Always loved Melanie. 🥰
A wonderful, loving spirit!
From one of the "Albumn Touchers" to the Artist.... thanks for your music.
This must be my lucky day!!! What a darling, and I sweetly devoured her music from the 60's & 70's! What a treasure!
What is the best hardest, and will never be forgotten she was not going to tempted but beautiful❤❤❤❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nothing breaks like a heart ❤
Thanks for the great upload!
A TRUE TALENT

50 yrs. ago back in '74.
She wasn't a great guitar player. She wasn't a trained or great singer.
But she was Melanie.
And for me, at 18 in 1971, she was an important part of my musicical experiences.
What I've learned today, upon hearing of her passing, by looking at many interviews and older concerts was that she was a grounded individual who stayed married, stayed being MOM, and stayed true to her principals and core beliefs.
A Jersey girl.
This single post is my tribute to her and her family.
Not liking how much the interviewer continually interrupted Melanie. Would have liked to hear complete answers. Still love Melanie!
Such is the problem with MOST interviewers. They want to impose upon the person they interview. Charles Grodin often filled in for Tom Snyder. Grodin was a GREAT interviewer.
Everybody obsesses about brand new key. Just a kids song. Listen to her album 'Affectionately'. Full of wonderful songs, 'Johnny Boy' 'Tuning my guitar', classics, never mentioned
At Woodstock 69 she was one gorgeous singer
Thx Ian 4 this video , cousa I guess Melanie is damn good singer , maybe one of the best.
I bloodywell love this gem. And Melanie, you can be anti-war but still support those who serve their country in war.
I wonder
Such a unique, strong voice.
I saw her perform in a club in Nyack, NY about 20 years ago.
Her voice brought me to tears.
Wish more people would listen to all her music not just the hits.
She's a lovely woman. Inside and out.
I like her. Always loved the Rollerskate Song which was kind of a personal anthem. She reminds me a little of Mama Cass.
She performed with the superstars, but she was one of them. I used to idolise her but still enjoy most of her music, except for the Nickel Song that she had to include on every album 😄 So sad she's gone even though in latter years her talent seemed to wane in my opinion. Hope she will be in the resurrection to come (Rev 21:1-4)
She was awesome.
RIP beautiful lady
The very first album I bought was: 'Candles in the rain' - Melanie! It started with a poem! And after that a superlong version of Lay Down! Now she is an angel 💞
Much Love Melanie live long and prosper
She wasn’t a real hippie, but the majority of us weren’t. We were faux hippies, i.e., flower children. She was definitely a flower child. Met her during the Moratorium Day event in NYC.
beautiful eyes wow ...shes got THAT expression ..
May God , she is still beautiful !!!!!!
Forget the first 9 minutes, folks. go straight to the 8:55 mark. "LAY DOWN, LAY IT DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN ....!!!"
She wasn't 18 at Woodstock. She was 22. Still very young and younger than most artists at Woodstock.
Mike Wynne, she knows that now, but for years thought she was only 18. She freely admits to having a loose grip on time, chronology etc. even now. :)
I really like her- but that's weird.
Perhaps this song may clarify her perspective on the concept of time (do you know it?)- ua-cam.com/video/nhj3dN9_jhA/v-deo.html
I think it has something to do also with the whirlwind of unexpected fame she was caught up in, in the early years of her career. Looking back later in life she realized how very young she had been at that time, and without doing the sums (1969-1947=22) she felt like she'd been only 18 at the time. I know it seems weird, but that's why she calls herself an oddball... :)
it is still incredible that at 22 years old she stepped out there with just her guitar face-to-face against 500 large. Unbelievable.
We loved you then, and we love you now!!
It's wonderful that she supports the soldiers who served so bravely and suffered so thanklessly. The only time I ever hated my own country is when they turned their backs on the soldiers returning "home" from Viet Nam. Politicians in particular but the hatred that came from our own citizenry was nothing short of shameful and degrading. People turned their backs on our soldiers as if they made their own decision of what to do and who to do it to while they were their. They were under strict orders and had their hands tied as to what they could and couldn't do there. Our soldiers should have been nothing but loved. All the hatred the citizens had should have been directed at the politicians. Especially those who became very rich from that war.
I quite agree with you, sir!
Always her sweet self..🙏🎸🌷👀🗝️one of the best🌟
so funny listening to her voice, she sounds just like Melanie Griffith's tone/voice. Wow
Love you Melanie!
I don't like when hosts interrupt. Over and over.
Hang back, settle down.
Melanie sounds very similar to Fleetwood stevie nicks. Similar vibrato. Anyone else hear it? 😊
I get what you're saying .. they both have a raspy quality to their voice , but it works very well ... two of my favorite singers .
She's still a doll!!!
Nice girl. Great songs, Good heart. Sadly not awake. Few are.
How so .
Wow. Beautiful voice. And that pretty nice woman. Charming
