Spray painting the intake manifold

  • I clean, degrease, and paint the intake manifold for my 1995 Saturn DOHC using Rustoleum high temperature engine spray paint. I am very pleased with the glossy finish and good coverage. Rust-oleum engine enamel is rated to 500 degrees. It's a good inexpensive way to fix up old looking parts.
    I found these on sale for $2/can but it should be availlable at most auto parts, hardware, and home improvement stores.

    if anyone decides to do this your paint job will look realy good if you start out lightly dusting in small strokes from about 4ft away. wait till that is tacky then do 3 or 4 more coats. light coats that are applied evenly will look much much better than thicker longer strokes. if your too close youll cause runs. if you hold the spray too long it may lbuild up on the tip or spit droplets on your project. Good luck :)

    Tip. Spray all the nooks and hard to see spots first. Then lay a coat over the flat and easy to see areas last.

    Nice project, by the time you start a proper restoration you'll have your skills up to the job. You can purchase assortments of silicone plugs to cover holes, the paint will come off when dry, you can even leave them in place when you oven cure the paints if necessary. They sell them for covering holes when powder coating. Just an idea, easier than making crazy shapes with masking tape.

    The Saturn is a very reliable car. I drove one from Houston to Winnipeg Canada twice with no cell phone. They are also very good on gas. The money you put into it is well worth it.

    this is the first video I've seen of yours and I'm not sure where the car stands at this point but, by the time you're done, you should have a pretty decent ride to make some cash off of. might make some kids dream come true as well. Nice job on the intake manifold. Doing this is so much fun!

    You use the primer so the final coat looks best and so it has a smoother surface to stick too so it lasts a little longer

      @No Name glass, walnut or sand blasting would be most ideal. Outside of that, I probably would do exactly like Austin said. Only in either case, I would add applications of alumiprep and alodine afterwards..

    It's to make the paint stick properly. Aluminum doesn't paint easily, you need a (etching type) primer first.

      Nobody ask that!, i am painting right now my Citroen 2cv exhaust..sorry for my english, with 2000F paint, with propper primer, preheat the surface and then cooking the pice..., you need to clean and clean...and more clean the pice... to avoid any cracks when cooking, i have doubt about the message in the can saying Gas and Oil resistant .

    Is that Aluminum? No offence but if it is aluminum, that paint and primer is just optical ilusion. I work with aluminum and magnesium alloys and after you brush it or after sandblast you can't touch it with your bare hands, after blasting or brushing immediately you need to use... Maybe best temporary coating - Alodyne (Henkel) procedure, thats the first thing (it creates thin aluminum oxyde layer that protects surface from oxygen, humidity, salts ect.) Then you need to use some not cheap acrylic primer. After that paint but not from these cans thats shit, thats ceap shit...
    If you want I can tell you more about aluminum painting and coating :) But great video I like that ;)

    • @The911SONIC
      @The911SONIC 10 років тому +2

      Doesn't matter. When you paint it it protects it. You need to clean it good first. That's all

  • @USMC-Sniper-0137
    @USMC-Sniper-0137 4 роки тому

    Yes, paint is good for aluminum that is beyond being able to be cleaned back to the factory look. It is good at covering the ugliness of aluminum that is in bad shape. Good Choice on your part! Hide it and move on........ It's ok, that is a 'Grandma's' car anyway.......
