Spray painting the intake manifold

- I clean, degrease, and paint the intake manifold for my 1995 Saturn DOHC using Rustoleum high temperature engine spray paint. I am very pleased with the glossy finish and good coverage. Rust-oleum engine enamel is rated to 500 degrees. It's a good inexpensive way to fix up old looking parts.
I found these on sale for $2/can but it should be availlable at most auto parts, hardware, and home improvement stores.

if anyone decides to do this your paint job will look realy good if you start out lightly dusting in small strokes from about 4ft away. wait till that is tacky then do 3 or 4 more coats. light coats that are applied evenly will look much much better than thicker longer strokes. if your too close youll cause runs. if you hold the spray too long it may lbuild up on the tip or spit droplets on your project. Good luck :)
Tip. Spray all the nooks and hard to see spots first. Then lay a coat over the flat and easy to see areas last.
Nice project, by the time you start a proper restoration you'll have your skills up to the job. You can purchase assortments of silicone plugs to cover holes, the paint will come off when dry, you can even leave them in place when you oven cure the paints if necessary. They sell them for covering holes when powder coating. Just an idea, easier than making crazy shapes with masking tape.
I get the same reaction working on my 2002 rusted focus but I enjoy working on it
Looks good man we check you out for futures projects.
Looks great 👍...well done!
Good vid man
Hi; if I use 2000Fº Rust oleum hight temps is a good choice for exhaust header also?...Best.
That orange stuff dried a little darker, I’m looking for the chevy orange red and this can may work, do they adhere well to wood?
The Saturn is a very reliable car. I drove one from Houston to Winnipeg Canada twice with no cell phone. They are also very good on gas. The money you put into it is well worth it.
ihatecountry. friend has one hasnt done anything to it in 8 years and runs and start everyday even baught a new car and have more problems with new car. Saturns run forever
this is the first video I've seen of yours and I'm not sure where the car stands at this point but, by the time you're done, you should have a pretty decent ride to make some cash off of. might make some kids dream come true as well. Nice job on the intake manifold. Doing this is so much fun!
Well done
How much did you use for two coats? Two cans? I'm going to do my valve cover and intake manifold and I'm not quite sure how much I'll need
Did you "cure" the paint, or just drove away? What's it look like now? Any pix?
How hot can the exhaust manifold get on a Saturn SL2?
nice diy. thanks
You use the primer so the final coat looks best and so it has a smoother surface to stick too so it lasts a little longer
good job
Merci , thank you goooooooooooood v nice
For future refrance your paint strides and flicks need to be faster and te distnace needs to be further away also
Also what this guy said is 100% correct.
BumRat455 zits a fucking spray pack... Any further away you would use the whole can for half the work.
This is 500f paint not 2000f so i think itll peel of isnt it?
The sale do nice thts a steal ijst got a metalic red for 8$ retails at 13.99 but you got primer and paint dope.in the future you do 3 coats of primer and paint.
I wish young guys would get into cars this way most can't change a tyre these days
or rotate or balance
I've done motor swaps and replaced my clutch, diff, and driveshaft in my driveway. I've done basically everything other than an engine rebuild and I can't balance a tire. Lol. You need a machine...
308wce 05 The dads didn't take the time to get them hooked. I lucked out because my uncle would take me out to do donuts in his 75 impala so that got me into cars when I was maybe 9
Or spell... smh
308wce 05 tire
Badass!!
Hi, I would like to know whats the primer's paint job function ?
Well, it's to keep that thar aluminum from rusting again LOL!!!!!!!!
its red or orange??
hell ya man
Man if u could have a another SL2 or Evan an SW2 I'd be happy
Practice makes perfect. I'm really a Jeep guy but my firebird project is taking up my time now. Check out my firebird construction vid.
cant use steel wire to clean aluminum. now you have cross metal contamination..for future reference
@No Name glass, walnut or sand blasting would be most ideal. Outside of that, I probably would do exactly like Austin said. Only in either case, I would add applications of alumiprep and alodine afterwards..
nice
Hi.. Good video..!! But it's necesary to use primer..?
No but if you do use it the paint will stick better and also look nicer.
thats not ugly !
It's to make the paint stick properly. Aluminum doesn't paint easily, you need a (etching type) primer first.
This was posted in 2013, how long did the paint job last?
Nobody ask that!, i am painting right now my Citroen 2cv exhaust..sorry for my english, with 2000F paint, with propper primer, preheat the surface and then cooking the pice..., you need to clean and clean...and more clean the pice... to avoid any cracks when cooking, i have doubt about the message in the can saying Gas and Oil resistant .
My 98 saturn has 200k and no major repairs until now, need a compressor maybe a condensor... its cheap
Enamel paint is always thicker
***** where did you get the paint on sale
Long Man Local store chain in Maine called Mardens. Sells liquidation and salvage stuff. Lots of trash and treasure.
DoSumpthin sandford me. I know that place
Want this paint burn off? I was under the assumption that you had to use the flame proof paint specifically for headers.
Travis Neuberger These aren’t headers? And it’s 500 degree paint...why would he need flame proof paint? Not like his engine is a candle lol
Where did you buy your paint so cheap?
Alex Antonov Home Depot
wet sanding after primer could have helped to have a glass looking paint job.
wet sanding a rough surface?
that's an intake manifold not a fender...
i think it looks fine..
Well i did more than several times and it worked like charm
***** and, use q-tips and toothpicks. LOL !!!!!!
I know what you mean by time n effort on a crappy car. I'm redoing an 85 Firebird. Its cool and all but its all unibody.
that paint cos $15,99 in aus ..
do you know why?
more to do with importing or something,
or env regulations? (which I am for)
*****
Shit is just more expensive here. Then again someone working an entry level position is getting $30 an hour.
Our currency is also different from Australia too
in yugoslavia about 10€, cheap, very cheap, but effective
sucks to be you
why would you
Is that Aluminum? No offence but if it is aluminum, that paint and primer is just optical ilusion. I work with aluminum and magnesium alloys and after you brush it or after sandblast you can't touch it with your bare hands, after blasting or brushing immediately you need to use... Maybe best temporary coating - Alodyne (Henkel) procedure, thats the first thing (it creates thin aluminum oxyde layer that protects surface from oxygen, humidity, salts ect.) Then you need to use some not cheap acrylic primer. After that paint but not from these cans thats shit, thats ceap shit...
If you want I can tell you more about aluminum painting and coating :) But great video I like that ;)
Doesn't matter. When you paint it it protects it. You need to clean it good first. That's all
Yes, paint is good for aluminum that is beyond being able to be cleaned back to the factory look. It is good at covering the ugliness of aluminum that is in bad shape. Good Choice on your part! Hide it and move on........ It's ok, that is a 'Grandma's' car anyway.......
not wearing gloves or a respirator ? smh
