I once likened my XR650R to a crazy girlfriend. It waits until you are stuck on a small trail with a drop to certain death on one side and a cliff on the other before stalling. It will then not start for 30 minutes of kicking until you're about to throw it down the cliff. You then decide to give it one last kick and suddenly it starts like nothing was ever wrong. You ride it home and suddenly the bike pulls really hard and feels really great to ride. As you get home you think "No I wont set it on fire or sell it yet."
The next weekend the cycle starts again.
I love my bike just a bit more than I want to set it on fire.

Summed that up perfectly 👌Hate mine for many reasons, my ex wife had to go cost me a small fortune 😪 Now it's time to get rid of the Pig, on the bright side she's mint and sorted should be making a nice profit as nice ones are hard to find.🤙

Haha love that description. I guess you can apply that to many motorcycles, i once wanted to set on fire my 950 adv when trying to get to carbs, but when you ride it you forgive it everything :D

I've owned a BRP for 8 years now and I totally agree with you! Especially the 2 kicks normally, 11 if someone is watching :D
I'll give you one tip though, here in Italy the importer installed a second fuel valve on the left side of the tank, where you got some extra fuel reserve! Just put the fuel valve and a y connector and boom almost 1 extra liter!
Or you can just tilt the bike on the right side and enjoy the extra fuel like that.

Jack my dude. If you run got of gas while riding and the bike stalls because you let off the throttle to turn the pitcock its fine because you already have the clutch pulled in so when you right hand Is "safely back in place" you just dump the clutch and the bike will start. It's not really a problem. I know you know this. Probably just didn't think of it while scripting. Awesome video bro. Always look forward to your content.

Yes, the forks are perfect for desert racing, that's why me likey likey. Jonny Campbell et al won the Baja 1000 on that setup, so they must have dialed in their black magic well enough. The upside down forks might have suited your SUMO build better (I dunno, I ride my dirt bike in the dirt, kaboom!), but for me out in the boonies hammering over miles of stones and sand, I'm very happy with the conventional setup. And come on, nobody's ever cross threaded their front axel, dirt or no dirt :) Anyway, the mighty BRP lives on!

I bought mine new in 01 with a title so I could get a plate legally. Also got extra hubs so I could build it SM. I even have a paddle rear tire for St Anthony Idaho. FMF pipe, Hot Cam, head flowed by DAB, 200watt rewind alt, Baha Design lights, . It won’t quite beat my CR500 up the tallest dunes but you should see the buckets of sand roost it throws. On the mountain streets, it’s a bullet bike corner eater, sliding the rear and wheelying away. And I’m only 64.

I also have an XR650R! One of the things i'm not a huge fan of is that they have an outdated look to them. The front fender is huge and the rear curves down and it just makes the bike look /old/. Newer bikes have pointy, more aggressive fenders and they look rad.
I also have a huge tank on mine and yeah, makes it look weird, i agree.

That is actually pretty light, my 2003 XT600 comes in at around 155kg-160kg (340-350lbs) it's weaker too, but ITS GOT ELECTRIC START, SUCK ON THAT
4:55, Yep that happened on the XT, cost me about $100 to get it rethreaded in a way that it will safely hold the axle... Regarding this entire segment, I think the big bikes weren't really meant to be pure racers, more endurance and reliable bikes, the XT is almost identical in terms of technology to the XR, The XT is air cooled though, but inversely has dual carbs, Oil tank in the frame, regular forks, the axle solution is the same

The petcock is on the side of the tank with the greater cross section at the height of the run/res. valve in the petcock. You think reserve is small now? Mod the tank so you can put the petcock on the other side. You better hope there's a gas station with eyesight when you flip it over to reserve. Great video jake! The xr650r was built simple and tough, and the fastest dirt bike off the showroom floor before you mod. It was even faster after the mods, and has the most Honda wins for the baja 500 and 1000 for the life of its production period. The only reason it became extinct they started using the 450 which was a lighter package which produced always the same hp numbers , But that 650r will run circles around the 450, all day long. Its a great bugout bike, you don't need a battery to start it which i think is a plus, I have a 2005 yamaha r1 and i have a 2001 honda xr650r and I stay replacing the battery on that R1. :)

Comparing it to a 450 dirt bike, this thing is heavy af. But compared to the fmx650.... yeah. I don't understand why a dirt/enduro bike designed to take a beating on the regular can be a whole 28kg (62 lbs) lighter than a supermoto (fmx claimed wet weight 176kg (388 lbs)). Could be the difference between water and air cooling (I have no idea which one is lighter tbh), and the dual exhaust doesn't really help either. Maybe you can tell someone who is just getting into motorcycles why that is :)

Could replace the entire cock or just add a second one at the lowest point and just have it off until needed. the conventional forks have one plus side for offrad riding, mud, sand and other crap will mostly find its way to the lower part of the forks
and with conventional forks its just a housing and nothing there thn can wear down
and i can totaly understand you on the rare bike part, i have a MZ Baghira Supermoto and its a rare site even right next to the old factory
the company that made these went bankrupt i think 3 times since they made them, always with a relocation and now owners afterwards
so its even tought to find oem parts and aftermarket becomes even more difficult here in germany thanks to our regulations ( TÜV -.- )
at least the engine is from yamaha (its the 660 5 valve 3yf engine), so i am good on that front
about the regulations, i am not allowed to use an exhaust that is homolgated for a yamaha XTZ660 3YF or Raptor 660 even as both
use the same damn engine (at least not out of the box)
same goes for brakes, the setup i have on mine isnt legal here even though its from heavier and faster bike and MZ used an nearly identical
    setup on a special edition
i am pretty sure i would have an easier time finding parts for a XR650R here in germany then for my germanmade bike, all while my bike was
sold street legal here and the XR just a few years as offroad only -.-

@@TheGardenSnake 😂 i see. I love the XR, and really supers in general, but I feel like id have to lower it so much itd ruin the handling. I can swing my leg over my cousins RM80 and the suspension sags about 4 inches once i sit on it, but swinging the leg over is still iffy

1999 CBR600F4 , so many parts. 1989 Yamaha XT350, somewhat easy, most swap over, not bad. 2007 Husqvarna SM610, that shit is a fucking nightmare where I live. No one will touch it, or even be able to get fkin parts, it still isn't that bad since there is a lot online, but I thought it would be the easiest lmao

Yeah I’ve heard that a bunch. My bro chris had one and had to get a cam chain off a GSXR and get it shortened. That was when BMW owned em right? It’s like KTM bought the rights to the name a zero of the tooling. Or just didn’t bother at all to make parts for the older ones.

@@TheGardenSnake Thanks for the reply! I've been watching for a few years! I just bought it from my friend who needed some cash, and we're gonna keep the bike between us since I got it for so cheap. I just did the oil, and I've never seen anything with two oil drain plugs, and the second one is a hex bolt??? Anyway, thanks for all the content, taught me a lot of stuff!

I heard the reason for the conventional forks was the extra movement in them helped compensate for tanking through obstacles that 450s are better off avoiding, but I can't say I've tested this theory.
100% the kickstart is the best/worst thing on the bike, but my biggest gripe is the lack of a cush drive. Big, relatively high compression 650 single likes to really jerk around in low speed traffic when it goes from torque to violent engine braking over and over. Subframe is also supposed to be fairly weak, but that's more of an issue for ones converted to adventure than supermoto.

    • @TheGardenSnake
      @TheGardenSnake  4 роки тому +2

Luckily I added a cush drive with the warp9 wheels. Other then the FXS (election Supermoto) this is the smoothest SM I’ve had.

Ogilve and Campbell tried USD forks on the pre production bikes. They found them to be too harsh with the extras stiffness of the aluminum frame and settled on the additional flex in the conventional forks to smooth out the hits. Big difference between hanging on to a bike on a groomed track for 30 minutes and spending 3+ hours at a time running through washboards.

Never been on, never seen an xr650r. Still love my 650L sumo. With Conti Attack 17's and CR250 stiffened front suspension, it's pretty nimble. Is the R that much better. Can't be more fun than a wr sumo. ?
