I’ve had eBay aluminum rads on my Ktm for 4 years now and they’re going strong, takes a lot more to overheat in the woods and they haven’t bent yet either, and I crash a lot
We just installed the same fan on our sons XRR. Aside from the temp setter needing a battery the fan works great. On my XRR I just tapped the boss on the thermostat housing and installed my temp switch there. Either way, stop and go on the piggie it needs a fan
When drilling your rads, use a pillar drill. You'll feel when the bit goes through. No matter how gentle you are with a hand drill, there's a good chance of it catching an pushing straight into the first waterway. Also a pillar drill will be perfectly upright or perpendicular to the job.
Holy fucking shit your builds are amazing. It's like an educational PBS video and a Jake video had a baby. You're both entertained and you learn something. Has anyone ever seen James May's "The Reassembler" show? That's what Jake's builds are like, but with Jake's unique style instead of James May's unique style.
Jake if you cut some cardboard same size as your rad cores tape them on while your fitting the rads. Saves your rads. Most racers take the thermostat out all together. Coolant flows better. Your not running a heater and you can take a bit longer warming the engine up. I don’t rate fans. But if you really think you need one you need a rad shroud and that will restrict your rad. Mmm fan bad idea. Use ice coolant. Hope you like the rads I design them. The originals. You got the copy’s.
Imma be real im not nor never have been a mechanics kinda guy or really cared for it but yet these videos intrigue me a lot. Idk if its your more “cool uncle” style of explaining things or what but i enjoy watching these freaking videos
Motorcycle building done right dude.Well done honestly! Really hyped for the result, you're building a really unique motorcycle, one of the truest thumpers.
Same thing happened to me with my trail tech fan, I however didn't think to test mine first and only found out it wasn't working when my 350 began overheating at the bottom of a long rocky gully on the first ride out. Live and learn though, and trail tech were great about it and sent out a new temp unit immediately and now it works great 👍
I can't wait to see how that fan setup works for out for you! I may end up throwing one on my Cr250. I'm worried about slow riding in traffic. Your build keeps surprising me with all the details!
Two weeks between videos was killin me! It’s freezing winter where I am and I need moto vids to get me through to spring haha. I have to go back and watch your Thailand vids. Congrats on your new house! Looks nice!
Jake's second channel is called "Cleaning with Jake the WD-40 Snake" if anyone's interested. It's sort of like a "Will it blend" channel but for cleaning things with WD-40 instead of blending them.
Hi Jake i had i mint XR400R4 on the last registration they do here in the UK ,if i had seen this vid when it was posted i would NEVER have sold it even for the price i had gotten for it .Im Loving this build series as it shows how and where to get the parts that function AND look really good thanks for posting these cheers SCOOBS UK.
Before you go and cut your hose, there's a little boss cast into the thermostat housing. You can drill and tap it for 1/8th not and the trailtech sensor goes right in
I've been running the cheap outlaw racing radiators on mine and they work great not a single issue. Your build looks so sick, inspiring me to tear mine down next summer and clean it up, the top end is freshly done but I need to redo all the wiring lol it runs like a champ but I can't say the same about my lights lol. By far the funnest bike I've owned though, such a beast.
When testing for resistance 0 ohms is the best unless there's a resistor or something impeding it, OL will be open line, or a short/break in the wire or switch.
Those rads should work nicely for you. I have the exact same set up on mine. I live in WA so It doesn't get as hot outside obviously but sitting in traffic on a hot summer day they keep my bike at perfect temp. Be ready for hot blasts of air on your thigh though. Digging the build, (cause it looks just like mine) really want that carb.. but man it's pricey.
I have major heat issues in my climate. Two questions: I imagine aftermarket radiators are larger, right? Since I mount a 4.6gal IMS tank: is the termostat bigger on the front of the bike or real (will it collide with the larger tank? I also mount a fan!). 2nd question: is the 180 thermostat swapped in the video allowing more flow? Does it open wide at a lower temp than the OEM? Thx
Electric fans are great and all. But without a shroud, it's only pulling air thru the small section of the radiator that it's covering. Given the cramped space, it would be next to impossible to pull that off. So in this case, a little bit of extra cooling is better than nothing.
I just want to say that you are my favourite UA-camr and I really think that you deserve more subscribers and views. Im always looking forward to this build series, maybe because you are making these bikes really great and cool, and no one has done proper Honda xr 650 build Sorry bad english :]
I just ordered a trailtech fan and they didnt have an option for the xr650r so I was stuck getting the universal and I really wish it came with that mounting bracket.
The weep hole should always go on the top to allow air to flow through. Due to gravity and shit maybe buoyancy idk. But bubbles float and they can get trapped without that hole.
Just got myself a Suzuki GSX 550 E project bike for 450€ as a platform for a cafe racer. I'm excited to get started! And yes, please yell at me for making a cafe racer out of it lol
Parker Ryan guy on Instagram has a pretty cool xrr build and he went from a pumper to the lectron. He reckons the pumper had an edge for performance but lectron was better all around.
Bought a house from youtube, well done. makes me wonder what house prices are in USA $$$. average house price here for a house is 1million aud. thats 700k USD
OEM parts are so expensive..I found out the hard way before the internet rebuilding a trashed 88 Suzuki LT 500 R buying parts through a dealership...just for all the bearing and bushing in the rear swing arm mount, shock and piece between the shock and swing arm...cushion lever I believe...had 800.00 in bearings and bushings...It cost me near 3 grand just to replace all the bearings and bushings in the suspension and wheel bearings, rear axle carrier and brake pads but all genuine Suzuki parts...that I could buy online now 20 years later for less then a third of the price...not to mention the money spent on rebuilding the top and bottom end of the engine...new plastic front and rear plus a seat cover. But damn it was a great bike...and worth every penny...I bet I had twice what it cost to buy brand new into it...not including the 2 grand I paid for it. Dealerships can be a huge rip off...
You're still the most entertaining motorcycle guy on UA-cam.

the eBay rads are just backdoor expensive rads...same same

There's a reason they're referred to as "Stealerships" lmao
I always go though online warehouses like partzilla and such if I'm searching for OEM, plenty out there to avoid the whole dealer mark up
why did you not use the universal fan to avoid the drilling of the radiator. was it for aesthetic reasons ?
