One thing that helped me recently to change my perspective on things (not only health and fitness, but also at work) is this: "you either feel the pain of discipline or you feel the pain of regret. Either way, you will feel pain." Sounds a bit harsh and demotivating with all the talking about pain, but in my opinion this is true nevertheless. So, I'd rather feel the discipline-pain :D
Thank you Belania! Great one! I was recently trying to think to myself that the pain of discipline can actually turn into positive, rewarding. The pain in itself is what makes us feel like we're doing a good job and releases feel good hormones. But this is way better! You're so right!
Crowding out the not-healthy stuff is KEY for me. Also -- GREENS. I find when I'm not eating at least one giant salad a day and when I'm not drinking a green smoothie packed with greens in the morning, I crave sugar so much more. Don't get me wrong - I still love dark chocolate and I eat that often but not in large quantities! I just don't want a huge amount of the treats when I get enough greens in. I never say to myself "you can't eat chocolate." Instead I say "we're going to eat a lot of greens and at least 5-7 servings of fruit or veggies a day!" When I do THAT, I end up eating well.
Great video! I was vegetarian for over 25 years, and became vegan last year and whole food plant based the last two months. I've found your channel to be very helpful! I liked this one's tips, especially the "visualize your future and make choices towards that". Visualization techniques have always done well by me, so I look forward to trying that out.
When I learned that willpower is a finite resource, something we don't have infinite reserves of, it completely changed my way of thinking. It helped me understand how importance taking pleasure in habits and ritual would improve my health.
Well said. I saw a great post that said ‘The reason most people fail instead of succeed is they trade what they want most for what they want now’ … And I remember Chef AJ saying ‘If it’s in your house, it’s in your mouth’ and it’s so true. A clean environment I find really helps me. 🇨🇦
Happy new year, Derek and Crystal! Inspiring, motivational vlog as usual. It came at the right time as my husband and I have finally decided to quit drinking alcohol and eating addictive, unhealthy junk food, join 12 step groups and form new healthy habits. Thank you for your positivity, encouragement and gentle motivation--all done without shaming and pushing perfectionism! 💪💗
Thank you for the time you take making all the videos that you do - they are all helpful and inspiring to so...many people. I know you have expressed as struggle to continue making content in the past so just wanted to say how much 'we' appreciate that you made it through those struggles and have continued to help other. Also love to support a fellow Islander!!
I was hoping for one of your motivational/mindset videos to start the year and I'm so happy you made one! I'm always grateful when you drop these throughout the year. Thank you for all that you do! You and Crystal are making the world a better place!
"If it's in the house, it goes in the mouth" this has been my unspoken motto for every food, especially snack-type foods. I'm the type where if it's in my reach, I'm going to eat it and this can be a blessing or curse depending on how I shop. Only keep nutrient dense foods around, and I'm going to eat nutrient dense food 9 times out of 10 because of sheer laziness.
That's another great point I've learned over the last year, food isn't meant to be this incredible flavor bomb at every meal with endless butters, salts, herbs and spices galore. It's much easier for me to stay on track when my staple foods and meals are simple, tasty enough to eat it but not so packed so flavor that I want 3 plates of it.
Now that I am spotting them, slightly distracted by the cool neon shroom(!?) though, how about a HOUSE PLANT TOUR? During a live video, perhaps? 🌱 I am entering my 17th year veganism and your channel is a staple.
Yes, it's a neon mushroom! It's was a bit too bright for the video, I will have to adjust it. As for a house plant tour, I should do that although a few of our plants (the plant that is cascading down the fridge, and the plant on the freezer with the shroom) are fake. We live in a basement suite so we don't get enough light for everything. The pothos we have are real! So is the plant on the cat bed tv.
Thank you for this video Derek, I think we all struggle with motivation to keep exercising and also to make good food choices, it’s just human! Thank you for bringing this topic to light! ❤
I love all your videos. Obvs, I'm here for every one. Even the ones I think I might not be as excited about when I read the title, I ALWAYS end up loving. But this kind of video speaks to me even more. I love the peek inside how you think and how you got from Party Simnett to Peak-Health Simnett. Plus, just sitting down for a chat feels like getting to hang out with you which is never a bad time.
Starting my day with a delicious, nutritious bowl of oatmeal while listening to your wise advice empowers me and lights up my energy. Thanks a lot man!✨
Have always loved your videos and just overall outlook on life, really inspiring. Looking forward to seeing more of your content in the future, hope you and your partner have a great start to the new year 🙂
Thank you! Love the video. I bought your sauce ebook with the plant-based bundle. I completely agree that putting healthy food together with an incredible sauce is so satisfying & filling. I just started making cashew cream dressing with garlic and wow it goes good with greens, microgreens, some cooked veg & legumes. I feel so so good too!
The food high- yes, I had that thought once. I remembered how we sometimes had plain potato soap for dinner when I was a child, vegetables soup etc. I realized I never cooked simple things like that. It had to be something more "special". And realized how absurd it is that every meal should have up be anything special. I was totally fine eating plain potatoes soup as a child. I still need to remind myself of this.
Absolutely top notch video Derek. All your videos are great but this one I found particularly motivational - you make it sound easy, and I believe it can be with what you've said, and I'm excited to use those tips! Thank you for another great video 😊
Another amazing post! The future self and improving how you feel are both game changers to me. For example, when we eat a lot of sugar we feel sick - that's cause it poison. Ditto: Changing “ mindset” applies to every situation in our lives my dear, keep talking. I LOVE YOUR WORK Derek.❤ Best, as always to you guys, from Colorado!
your channel has without shadow of a doubt has sustains me as a vegan I will always be vegan but your content lifts me up and gets me excited about health, fitness and wellbeing. thank you ..... c
Excellent advice! I liked the motivational image of ourselves in the future….something tangible on the fridge or mirror would definitely be a motivator. 👏🤩
This makes me feel so good about the changes I've made to my health over the past 20-25 years. I didn't really even notice as I was incorporating habits one by one into my life, and now there's a cumulative effect as they're all just how I live now. It was kind of effortless really. Your taste buds really do evolve too - I didn't touch kale until a few years ago, and now it's one of my favorite foods. Also, shout out to my parents for rarely letting us have soda or fast food - I never developed a taste for either.
I also love your "food is fuel". I've been a much more creative cook since going vegan. Sometimes it works and I'm amazed at what I threw together, and sometimes it's just edible. But having that flexibility to eat whatever healthy odds & ends are in the fridge/pantry has made for a much healthier and varied diet.
I ❤ if it’s in the house, it goes in the mouth😂 I was a nanny for many years and I always found it baffling when parents would be like oh I don’t want them to eat this food and it was always in the house. I used to tell them, don’t put it in the house and don’t bring them food shopping with you and tell them they don’t sell it anymore. When it comes to caring for children, that is one of the easiest things you can control.
Love your channel and the life / meal tips. I forget what video it was but you made reference to lower available antioxidants if a banana was added to a smoothie with fruit in. This struck me as strange (or maybe more unfortunate as I always add a banana or two) so I did some research 🧐. I did indeed find a study that spoke to this. The only real good news, it was only conducted on a study of only eight people. Just wanted you to be aware that the sample size was extremely small. :)
Thank you for another great video! I have a family size block of Whittakers Hazela chocolate in the pantry! I know if I open it, it’s gone! Today, I’m dumping it in the office kitchen 💪no more mouth enriching foods hiding in my house 😃🙏
So I am occasionally vegan for (digestive) health and weight control reasons (I still eat meat like mad but full course vegan can satisfy me without difference), and with some weird reason YT suggested your channel onto mine that is flooded with otter, duck, cars and old rock song videos and I find your channel easy to digest (pun intended) for a stupid like me who exercise only sometimes (mostly at 600 kcal if available, if not, 1000+ on urban cycling day for my sanity) and man you just covered of what I need from vegan channel, easy to understand and some exercise stuff. Thank man for your channel existence. Subs.
Thank you so much! super appreciated! All are welcome here, and I'm happy to be on this journey with you. My YT feed is also flooded with car stuff so we probably have a lot in common, haha.
Ummm what is that mushroom light?! Haha I love it whatever it is. I also love the motivational videos :) any of your content, just to have your energy. Thanks as always ❤
I would like to see a classification of every Vegan diet such as Potato diet, raw, fruitarian, Daily Dozen, Starch Solution, etc . Give them the ranking from S tier to F tier - for general health but also higher protein (aka weight training).
Congrats on this vid. Great stuff and we'll timed 😊 "We are not defined by our abilities, but by our actions" is a Dumbledore quote from Harry Potter 😃
Don’t like the house/mouth even though it might be the result, it’s not a healed relationship with food if we need to shackle ourselves - orthorexia and other EDs love that kind of restriction way too much. Willpower is a myth btw. ❤ Keep up the great work in 2025!
What I mean is ofc there is evil and horrible ultra processed food out there, especially in your part of the world - but it’s more important to have *the insight into your psyche WHY you crave / need / want sth… * prefer the short term vs long term mindset way more than the „don’t buy xyz“, especially if more than one person lives in your household. Another example: I have so many friends trying sugar free again for 30 days right now - on their own, meaning without their partner/family/co-workers, but it is not realistic to live like that without becoming a social outcast. Food is social glue, too.
I don't see that as "shackling" myself. And I don't have an ED. I see it as knowing myself and being smart if I do want to choose to avoid certain foods or even avoid eating too much of them than I feel good eating. e.g. I drink soda pop, but only when I'm out (and rarely, even then.) I don't usually buy soda pop to have at home because I'd drink a lot more, it'd be easier to get to. I'm guessing Derek would say that if one has an ED, then listen to the professionals you're working with -- not him. EDs can be life-threatening and fatal so I'd say the same -- follow your health care providers' advice, not anyone on UA-cam.
I understand, I could have said it better. I think as humans we are more drawn towards ultra processed high calorie foods like cookies, etc because they are so highly palatable. So if they are in the house, you will probably eat them over veggies for a snack. That's all I really meant.
And if you have made an impulsive purchase at the grocery store and regret it later don't worry about the money wasted in throwing it away. It either goes to waste or it goes to waist.
I've been vegan for over 2 years and your channel has been with me all the way! Thank you for the great content! 😁
Thank you so much for watching!
Great video! That mushroom light looks like an animation in the foreground lol my eyes are playing tricks on me
lol 😂 the mushroom 🍄 reminds me of my penis
haha it is definitely bright! I'll fix it for next time :)
Oh! That's a mushroom ;)
Nice job, brother
Woww haha i did not even realise it was an actual lamp in the background, also thought it was animated on the screen
The pain of regret is future me's problem. A beans & greens diet comes easy for me, but exercise...not so much.
Thank you Belania! Great one!
I was recently trying to think to myself that the pain of discipline can actually turn into positive, rewarding. The pain in itself is what makes us feel like we're doing a good job and releases feel good hormones.
But this is way better! You're so right!
Great video, as always!!
My favorite quote I heard years ago is...
Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels!
Happy New Year !!
love that quote, how true is that!
Thank you, I needed this. I have no problem eating healthy, it's the exercise motivation I need...

So true about ‘in the house in the mouth.’ That’s why I like my wife doing the grocery shopping because I’m hopeless when it comes to potato chips 😅
I was hoping for one of your motivational/mindset videos to start the year and I'm so happy you made one! I'm always grateful when you drop these throughout the year. Thank you for all that you do! You and Crystal are making the world a better place!

You're really really good at motivating people!! These videos actually help!
They're motivation-dense, so to speak 😁👍
Thank you so much!
Great tips! 👊 It’s remembering the long term goal over the short term temptation. Always hard but gets easier with time.

I always appreciate your mindset videos! They are very helpful and motivating!!😊
So succinct and helpful! Way to go to you and Crystal!
I love theses type of videos!!!
The positivity in the delivery of "well it didn't work" killed me 😂

Glad you enjoyed it!
Great videos & Tips Derek 💯
Thanks for the inspiration Derek
Thanks, brother. I needed this today.

I appreciate the video and liked to see the before and after you it gets me thinking. Thank you Derek
Inspiring 😊 thank you 😊🙏💚
Thank you for this video, Derek! It's exactly what I needed to hear!
Would love more information on how your microbiome changes as a result of the foods you eat. Do you have a source or examples behind this point?
Spot on mate
Thanks brother!

yes mate its all about feeding our body any brain not just our taste buds we can have lots of tasty foods that are good for us
great video!!!!
I am currently reading Atomic Habits and his advice is a lot like yours. Small positive steps can lead to big life-changing gains.
I think I need to read that book then!
Wonderful advice, Thank you 🌱
Thanks for sharing. ❤
Love the new video, great advice!
Thanks so much!
Fantastic content 👌 👏 👍
This is awesome bro. Very practical. Do you have a training program for building muscles and vegan diet. ?
loved it. Thanks!
Great tips 😊
happy new year🌹❤🌹
Congrats on this vid. Great stuff and we'll timed 😊 "We are not defined by our abilities, but by our actions" is a Dumbledore quote from Harry Potter 😃
Well if were going to live our best lives then it must be our healthiest lives good video
good reminders :)
Atomic Habits ✨
Where did you get that mushroom? Thanks!🤓
Thanks
Reminiscent of atomic habits! simnett you're my GOAT
thank you! I haven't read that book, should I?
@@Simnettnutrition Yes it's fire!! It seems like you may have already learned some of the lessons by yourself though!
Very helpful
are your cookbooks in cups or in grams?
My Comfort Meals and Easy Vegan dressings are done in both! Muscle meals is in cups
Everything must be hard before it becomes easy 💯👌
IT'S MR CONE HEAD LOOKING LIKE HE'S IN HIS LATE 40'S...
Haha that mushroom light looks a bit rude
haha it's definitely too bright
Top Tip: document.
Everything you eat. Everytime. Everyday.
Another amazing video! You and Dr Mgreggor (cant remember how to spell his name😂) are the reason I went vegan! ❤
Yo Derek, I think you could leave your beard line a little more natural/ a bit higher on the cheek. Look good on you, little less ultra maintained 🤙🏻
"If it's in the house, it goes in the mouth" could be from a toddler safety commercial
lol it can apply to a lot of things can't it?
Lemme show you pictures of pre-2011 Allison... ooooh... mindset!
Don’t like the house/mouth even though it might be the result, it’s not a healed relationship with food if we need to shackle ourselves - orthorexia and other EDs love that kind of restriction way too much.
Willpower is a myth btw. ❤
Keep up the great work in 2025!

Love from India, spread veganism, include Indian dishes.
And if you have made an impulsive purchase at the grocery store and regret it later don't worry about the money wasted in throwing it away. It either goes to waste or it goes to waist.
haha good call
