Audiences lost their mind over the dancing in the cottage scene in Snow White. They had never seen music syncopation in animation, so that moment was a highlight for 1930s audiences. I don’t know if this is true or a legend, but it’s my understanding that is why Pinocchio opens with all the clocks. Syncopation right at the top of the movie in an early use of movie fan service 🤣

During this period, and using the earnings from Snow White, the Disney Studio was making great technical strides with the use of multi-plane cameras (note the pan as the town was "waking up" on Pinocchio's first day of school). They were indeed showing off all the new tricks they had come up with. The animation of the open water during the Monstro scenes is nothing short of miraculous, considering it was all animated by hand.

They Mulan'd Pinnochio. He feels way too perfect here.
*1940's Pinocchio* skipped School for fame and glory. He was told that acting was a short-cut to success.
However, *2022's Pinocchio* skips School because he wants make his Father proud of him.
(Heck, even when he later decided to go to School, he's made to feel like an outcast and told "puppets belong in a puppet show". I wouldn't want to go to School either if I was made to feel unwelcome).
On Pleasure Island, *1940's Pinocchio* is implied to "poke some kids in the nose just for the fun of it". He helped Lampwick destroy the "Model Home" with a wooden axe. He smoked and drank. He said "being bad is a lot of fun", so he clearly enjoyed being mischievous with his new friend.
However, *2022's Pinocchio* is visibly uncomfortable on Pleasure Island. He clearly doesn't agree with Lampwick's behavior (so I honestly have no idea why he followed him around everywhere).
This version of Pinocchio was totally against being bad or mischievous, telling Lampwick "I don't want to be a jerk, I want to be a real boy".
Honestly, Pinocchio 2022 had no character development. He was already a good kid from the beginning with barely any flaws (outside of trusting strangers). What was the point of this movie?

I'm kinda sad when people say Disney's good live action adaptation, rarely people talk about 2015's Cinderella directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Lily James as the title character which in my opinion is the best Disney live action adaptation and the most faithful one from the animated movie. It's not that it's "hard to make great things well" but more so that these movies are born to make money, rather than an artist who felt strongly about a specific message / theme / vision and had to let it out. These Disney live action remakes are just cash grabs.

I watched this last night, and it gave me the hardest laugh I've had in a while. The part when Pinnochio is motoring the boat away from the whale, and then at the last second, he just goes total God mode and starts accelerating ridiculously fast away from the whale as a a literal loud electric motor sound starts being heard, and the boat just starts FLYING over the CGI water as greenscreened Tom Hanks holds on for dear life making Geppetto look like he's all "HOLY SHIT PINNOCHIO!!!" as they just go SHOOTING at super-sonic speed into the cave at a velocity that leaves a negative percentage of likelihood that Geppetto could even come anywhere remotely close to surviving...
I just lost it. Something about that whole moment was so hilarious to me. I had tears streaming down my face. Primarily greenscreen Tom Hanks going flying at super-sonic speed into a cave at the hands of beast-mode nuclear-powered-propellor Pinnochio. The best Disney remake was 2015's Cinderella, it was unique and it didn't screw up the message of the story. 2016's Jungle Book was great but combining Kippling's story with Disney's story led to a jumbled mess of themes. 2019's Aladin had potential to be great but they don't commit to a different enough style to make it unique.
The only Disney movie remakes, that should be in the pipeline, are ones where the original had a lot of promise but just didn't execute correctly. I think of "The Black Cauldron", "Hunchback", "Hercules", and (one of my favorite Disney films) "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". Exactly, don't know why people don't talk about Cinderella when it comes to best live action remakes. Cinderella remake was basically everything i wanted for a Cinderella movie. There are little bit of changes but they truly worked for the story, one of them was when the Prince actually joins the search in disguise rather than waiting for the princess in the palace. I thought that was a brilliant change

Watched the original Pinocchio yesterday (maybe for the first time? Definitely the first time since I was a very little kid) in preparation for Zemeckis & GDT's Pinocchio adaptations. I feel like, of anything, the D+ remake is only going to make me more excited for the Netflix version coming later this year.

Nah, disagree, Cinderella live action remake was far better. Aladdin remake of Jafar was awful, i couldn't take the character and the actor portraying him seriously enough. Will Smith was the best part of the movie, other than that it was pretty much mediocre to bad.

Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh, is probably the best one, though none of them were necessary except to make money without having to come up with anything original. I'm sorry, but Will Smith seemed like he was moving in slow motion compared to the manically wild and wonderful Robin Williams in the cartoon version.

None of this surprises me. Almost all of these live action/CGI remakes Disney churns out have felt so pointless. There's clearly little creative impetus driving them being made, just Disney's need to capitalize on their nostalgic IPs and pump out product to fill their schedule. Certainly none of them have been better than the originals, kind of defeating the entire point.
Remake Song of the South or something where you could CLEARLY improve on the original and maybe it would be worth something.

When I saw the original at age 7, it became and remains my favorite movie of all time. I couldn't believe human beings could DRAW something so beautiful. The artists and animators, not working under the best of financial conditions, poured their hearts into it because they were proud to be on the cutting edge of furthering an ART FORM. What a masterpiece. I have no interest in corporate soulless cash grabs. Sorry.

It’s what I feared. Pinocchio is, together with Lion King and Robin Hood, my favorite Disney animated movie. Now, I’m not one who wants to stick to the original a 100%, on the contrary. I’m also not one who’s opposed to the live action remakes. Give me something, as long as it’s good. But they just can’t get it right with these remakes. Lion King was gorgeous but boring because it was a shot for shot remake. Mulan was awful because they changed and added way too much. The Jungle Book I agree was pretty much a perfect blend where they struck a nice balance between fidelity to the original and just enough new stuff. Here it seems the’ve missed the mark again. But the number one reason this remake doesn’t speak to me is that I don’t believe for a second Pinocchio is a wooden doll and exists in the same world. He looks and feels animated. The one thing any movie needs to get right from the very start is that your characters need to be believable. Roger Rabbit was a cartoon and every second of that movie I believe he and the rest of the Toons exist in that world. They are real. Here, I feel nothing. Granted I’ve only seen the trailer so I hoped the effects weren’t finished, but it was enough to put me off the movie. And hearing now that it’s pretty much the same in the finished movie, yeah, I’m out. If I don’t believe that the titular character even exists, why should I care about his adventures? It’s sad that I complain about this because, as I said, I don’t mind the idea of these classics being remade for a new generation. But this being one of my favorites, I can’t deny that the lack of care they gave this movie doesn’t hurt.

After just watching it, I agree with what you've said. There are a few remakes that are actually pretty good (eg. Jungle Book has a much more unique/flowing story and Aladdin brought a new side plot that actually has value), but most of them are just cash-grab, shot for shot films. Sure they added a few good things here and there, but the whole movie must be better than the sum of its parts, which this movie doesn't do

Pinocchio being in live action was actually a good idea at first because i can picture it in real life, same thing with Robin Hood. However this wasn't really the execution that i was hoping. I totally agree with you Dan! I did not like Pinocchio 2022 Disney+ version. And I totally agree that the Blue Fairy was awesome and was under utilized. Missed opportunity to use the Blue Fairy more; especially, the singing!! Ugh!! The lessons for kids definitely santized to a point where it does nothing to teach kids about the dangers of life. The donkey scene which supposed to highlight the human trafficking problem which is still a problem against humanity and kids are especially vunerable was atrociously glossed over. The only thing I loved the most was the Blue Fairy. I did like Pinocchio's voice but yes, there was nothing more to it. The movie felt like it was done overnight without any heart whatsoever. Charming at times, but no heart.

This is why I wish they would stop the remakes. I have yet to really like a single one (Jungle Book, Aladdin, and Cinderella were fine). I got irrationally angry at Lion King (the musical was right there...Beyonce singing Shadowlands would have been amazing) and especially Beauty and the Beast (see Lindsey Ellis' vid if it's still up, they literally missed the point so many times). Very nervous for Little Mermaid as they butchered Howard Ashman's other masterpiece. But they make $, so they will continue to be made...

3:12 I understand your point and eventhough I like this one I really didn't like any of the others, but as far as the question "why do they keep doing them" goes, the answer is quite simple and it's something a lot of people don't seem to wanna get into their heads: it's a movie for kids. Just like the original. That dichotomy only exist in the mind of adults. Kids don't care a lot about that as long as they like it. That's why I don't complain about the ones I don't like or the idea itself which I also don't like. I'm not the target audience.

And that's largely due to the fact that Will Smith was his own person and not trying to mimic Robin Williams.
