Folks! Charts is coming tomorrow - final numbers for the four-day weekend don't come in until today. Don't worry, I'll have a full breakdown on The Little Mermaid and everything else in the morning. In the meantime, enjoy this look at lots of mediocre movies!
Oh...ok, ill watch Speed instead
Turns out I'm a charts junkie! Gotta have my weekly dose!! Keep up the great work Dan, thank you!
Finally some unbiased box office numbers
That's fine. It'll give me more time to play Tears of the Kingdom.
I have some a lot higher than some others on my own personal list compared with dan’s . But the top four is the same but it a different order 1) Cinderella 2 jungle book , 3 Aladdin , 4 the little mermaid
Glenn Close was such pitch perfect casting at the time for 101 Dalmatians. She looked like she had a ball.
Yeah, you could tell she was enjoying every second
Most people forget about 101 Dalmatians. I loved it
I cannot remember if it was 101 Dalmatians or 102, but I remember reading somewhere that she made sure her contract let her keep any of her costumes in the film.
As someone who can be more forgiving of a weak film with gorgeous costuming, I always thought that was ingenious of her and her team.
Please watch 101 Dalmatians again. Casting and music are both great. C'mon, Joan Plowright as nanny ...perfect casting. 101 is a 10 out of 10 on the adorable scale.
Absolutely agree
In my personal opinion, Cinderella is the best remake that Disney has made thus far. It managed to create it's own story and style, a film that stood on its own without relying heavily on nostalgia, and gave new depth to familiar characters especially the prince. If Jane Austen was a filmmaker, Cinderella remake is exactly how i'd imagine if she wrote and directed it. Everyone was absolutely brilliant in their roles and it's probably the only Disney remake that i can rewatch over and over again
This, 100%. Cinderella nailed the aesthetic of Mary Blair's art style, while still elevating the material to become its own unique adaptation
@@itsreelydalin 👍👍👍
agree i think number one for me has best Disney remake.
Yeah, for me Cinderella's the only great remake, the rest aren't even remotely passable.
Have you ever seen "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore? If you haven't, I recommend you do. It is the better version of what this Cinderella was trying to do.
Of course, Dan not only ranks the movies, he ranks the Disney logos. That is exactly the type of bonus flare that makes Dan's takes the best!
Fun fact for Mulan's opening credit logo: the castle is actually the Shanghai Disneyland castle instead of the Disney World Cinderella's Castle
My thoughts and prayers go out to Dan Murrell and his soul for it must be dead inside after watching all these Disney LA Remakes.
Same. The remakes are are not good
The remakes exists in their own multiverse universe.
@@chasehedges6775jungle book is. That’s it though.
He moved out of LA for a reason.
They aren’t that bad
Christopher Robin is an incredibly heart-warming and charming movie! I know it didn't qualify based on Dan's criteria, but I just had to say it!
Wonderful movie
Christopher Robin is such a loving and sweet movie, I absolutely love it. ❤
Agreed
It's good to see that others share my opinion on this. Although I gotta admit I'm pretty biased since The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh was by far my favourite Disney movie growing up.
I didn't know what to expect out of the movie and having seeing it, it's not that bad. It's definitely one of the better and faithful adaptation
"Cinderella" will always be my favorite of the live action adaptations. Not only is it a great tribute to the original movie's concept artist, Mary Blair, and her iconic pastel art style, but it also makes the story feels so much more refreshing and full than its animated predecessor. Plus, Lily James (now next to Halle's Ariel) is easily the best cast of the Disney princess' and I'm glad her beautiful singing voice gets some moments featured as well.
Dan you explaining the Lady & The Tramp scene in live action was HILARIOUS.
Jungle Book 📚 taking the top spot is my personal validation of this movie’s excellence. Cinderella coming in second gives me an excuse to finally check this one out. Thanx Dan, the remaining all fell in pretty respectable order (to my own).
Have u seen it?
Mulan is one of those things where Disney tried to appease multiple audiences and ended up pleasing no one. The criticism out of China for the original was that Mulan is supposed to be a larger than life super hero. "Brains over brawn" was not appreciated by those audiences. So Disney tried to return her supernatural aspect in the remake. I'd say they tried to have character growth for her still in having her overcome a mental hurdle to allow herself to use her abilities. This is represented by the contrast with the witch character Xianniang. But I think this didn't end up appreciated as much by western audiences. And in the end, the film still wasn't authentic enough for Chinese audiences so it wasn't received well in China.
Calling Sleeping Beauty and Little Mermaid draws with their live-action counterparts legitimately hurt my soul. Other than that, great video, Dan.
101 Dalmatians was always pretty fun for me. It would be way higher than Lady and the Tramp, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast on my list.
101 Dalmations 1996 was awesome
Glenn Close's performances is better than the entire Lion King remake movie
It is often forgotten when people talk about Disney's live action remakes.
"Puppies" (101 Dalmatians) as my daughter called it, was a mainstay in our house for about 2 years when she was 3-4 years old. Every night near bedtime she'd run into my dad's room and request Puppies and they'd watch it wherever it left off from the last viewing for a good 15-20 min. I actually thought it might rank higher, solely from Glenn Close!
Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams as the bumbling bad guys in the 2nd half of the movie are hilarious.
I love that you used a Weird Al analogy to compare the Lion Kings.
101 Dalmatians is a great adaptation. Loved it then and still love it. I was not prepared for this ranking 😂
Same
Love it till this day
Honey wake up! Dan Murrell uploaded!
What I love about the Cinderella remake is its sincerity. This was (and is) very rare in 2015 and a real breath of fresh air. Just letting characters be thoroughly wholesome felt (and feels) subversive in the cultural landscape.
I recently saw The Jungle Book remake and was blown away with its quality. It made me to decide to check out The Lion King remake, thinking that maybe Favreau slipped in some quality in that film too. Yeah, not so much.
Mowgli was so great and well cast as were all the voices!
I couldn't get over how off the lighting was in The Jungle Book. It ruined everything else. It just hit the uncanny valley for me, and I couldn't help looking for what was wrong.
The 2003 universal pictures Peter Pan was a great adaptation. Kinda sad that other studios are better at adapting 'disney characters' than disney. I think it comes from the fact that P.J Hogan really liked and respected the source material and wanted to adapt that story on the big screen. He didn't make the movie to change the story or "improve" it with modern subplots and influences.
I like the new one better.
They aren’t Disney characters. People just have ridiculous nostalgia for Disney animated projects. So if Disney changes anything or adapts the characters in any way people get crazy, but the same people give tons of leeway for another company adapting the exact same source material.
It was such a pity that PJ Hogan's Peter Pan was scheduled to open at the same time as Lord of The Rings: Return of the King. As a result, it barely got noticed.
Perter
Nailed it with the Jungle Book ranking. It's still the gold standard that all of the other remakes are judged by to this day for me and still has yet to be topped IMHO.
Yeah, I would’ve ranked Lion King dead last. It’s straight up blasphemy.
Mine:
1. Cinderella
2. The Jungle Book ‘16
3. Aladdin
4. The Little Mermaid
5. Pete’s Dragon
6. Mulan
7. 101 Dalmatians
8. Peter Pan & Wendy
9. Lady & the Tramp
10. Dumbo
11. Maleficent
12. The Lion King
13. Pinocchio ‘22
14. Beauty & the Beast
I rewatched Robin Hood recently and realized Disney hasn't done a remake yet. Since putting that thought out into the universe I've been waiting with apprehension for an announcement
Imagine if Favreau’s Lion King just stuck closely to Hamlet’s script. Even the other original was loosely based on it, adapting the Shakespeare source material would have been ambitious, made it stand on its own, and potentially been really good
I know Cruella didn’t qualify but its my favorite live action movie based on Disney characters. It was Punk Rock and actually had the directors style in there. Emma Stone was perfect as a young Cruella.
The mulan movie felt like a netflix adaption - missing all the magic and fun from the original including the music and moo shu
I havent watched most of these but i absolutely adored Cinderella (2015). One thing this movie does so much better than a lot of these remakes is its production design and costuming. Its just so bold and vibrant it really feels like a fairytale
I thoroughly enjoyed this ranking and your commentary throughout, would love for you to do more of these! Maybe once Flash and Aquaman 2 come out you could do a complete ranking of the whole DCEU before James Gunn reboots it.
I'm definitely planning to do that!
8:04 I think this is the first I've ever heard of there being a Lady and the Tramp remake, or else I had completely forgotten about any reviews of or announcements about it I saw/heard.
It’s just another bad Disney remake
Lion King is moving images created by a computer with input from an artist... it's animation. Doesn't matter what they "consider" it to be, it is what it is.
No Way "The Little Manatee" is that high... It's not even in top 10...
Great ranking. There's maybe a couple I would shift around, but on the whole I agree with your list. I think Aladdin works best when it leans into Will Smith's strengths and basically makes the genie Hitch. I kinda wish they had gone with the rap version of Friend Like Me for the movie, because it's just unfair to compare it to Robin Williams' version otherwise
I genuinely enjoyed Aladdin. Though I wish they had let the rap version of Friend Like Me in the credits would have been in the movie proper. Smith IS a rapper and it sounds great.
DAN: "Do you know where the waiters are? They're outside, singing to a couple of freakin' dogs." 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Now, THAT would be something I'd pay to see.
Great list. I think one thing that sets "The Jungle Book" apart as an adaptation, which is something I teach a class on (written word to film adaptations) is that it has its own theme. The use of the elephants as mythological beings that carve the rivers of the Earth and the idea of leaving your mark on the world is so well done.
While I do like the "Cinderella" adaptation, I still think "Ever After" is a better Cinderella story. As much as I like Cate Blanchett in this role, she is not as villainous as the original nor as good as Angelica Houston in the role in "Ever After"
For me, I do like "The Little Mermaid" but the original for me is one of my favorite films of all time because of the wonder of the sea in it and I do not think the new film reaches that height just as "The Lion King" does not either.
But again, great list!
Just wanted to thank you for taking the time watching all of these! I really enjoyed the video! Can't wait for charts tomorrow.
If you don’t catch your breath and believe in magic the moment Prince Kit grabs Ella’s waist the moment right before they start dancing! (it’s Mr Darcy hand flex level of 🥹💕😍💫✨) That moment alone makes it top tier live action Disney!
Loved that
I never believed in Love until that moment.
Every time people harp on the live action remakes (myself included) I point them to the Cinderella movie as one done right. Excited to see where you rank it!
I laughed way more than I should have with your woes about the scuttlebutt. I think we pretty much share the same ranking opinion
Look. Scuttle butt. My mom who saw this move as a kid LOVED this song. She was giggling the whole time.
She loved all of scuttles scenes actually.
And we have to remember it’s a movie for kids. Lol. A song with the word “butt”isn’t for the critics.
But I also think that the internet hive mind influences opinions greatly.
One popular person could have just as easily said the song was cool.
I agree with you, Dan, that song is still stuck in my head, listen to "happy" or any love ballad usually helps.
I love your Ranked videos!! Thank you Dan!
Mulan 1998 is a classic and still awesome to watch
“Dan to Hanks, You’re Not Completely Worthless.”
-Scoops McGee
Chris Pine was the only chuckle in that film. 😊
How to shake an earworm: pick any catchy tune **with no lyrics** and hum that instead until that is the tune you default to. Earworms work like that because you don't know the lyrics well, and your brain treats it like an unfinished task.
I use the theme tune to the 1970's Battlestar Galactica. It always works.
OMG the quick cut from Lady & the Tramp to the "I wish you didn't smoke weed" dog ad fucking killed me
Your Weird Al reference in regards to 2019's The Lion King is spot-on! (Also, thank you for giving a little bit of love to the 70's Pete's Dragon, one of my favorite childhood films!)
Here's my recommendation for how to get the Scuttlebutt song out of your head. Listen to Iago's songs from the Aladdin sequel, The Return of Jafar. Those songs are “I’m Looking out for Me” and “Forget About Love”.
ahh mannnn, 101 dalmation is ONE of my favourite live action. "Understand, not a word" "ahhhh, look at the size of that scarrrr". its hilarous!!
"Weird Al did the cover versions better than this movie does" PREACH!
I’m cheering and clapping at The Little Mermaid being so high!!!!! HELL YEAH.
TLM is my favorite Disney movie, and the remake satisfies. PERIOD. Halle was fantastic as was Jonah. And the added scenes/changes built upon the existing characters. I loved it.
I agree with your top three. 👍 Junglebook blew me away. I've watched Cinderella like a dozen times. I enjoyed the performances in Little Mermaid 🧜♀️
This was great! So much to enjoy, but I think the highlight for me was being jettisoned back to my younger days with the always-welcomed surprise terrible Van Der Beek southern accent delivery of “Ah don't wunt yore lahf!” I remember seeing Varsity Blues in the theater and repeating that line ad nauseum for so long!
Editing Paul Winfield into that Awkwafina song was a true masterstroke 😂 40:00
When The Lion King was released in 1995, I was selling TVs at Best Buy. It played almost constantly on most of the TVs on display for months. I never got tired of hearing the sounds and songs and seeing the images in the background while I was working.
The remake was a big disappointment for me. The realistic animal faces were much less expressive than the cartoon faces that are so clear in my memory.
Have you heard the Scuttlebutt, Dan? 😂😂 I totally love(d) it!
Great video as usual! Your hard work really shows. ❤
I personally enjoyed this but I cannot for the life of me understand howDan Murrell is able to make 45+ minute videos and still get an enthusiastic audience. I just started using UA-cam and am cutting down to 20 minutes or less even though I have more to say.
Your note about how the live action version makes lovely scenes look ridiculous remindes me of a similar insight of Lindsay Elis about the (usually failed) adaptations of musicals to the screen
Very excited for this one. I checked back for it like a dozen times over the weekend.
So glad that Cinderella ranked so high on your list as I really fell in love with it. I keep getting worried that it may rank low for you. I have yet the see The Jungle Book, but atm Cinderella is my favorite live action remake and part of why I have so much hope for the Snow White remake with Zegler. Everything from the casting to the romance to the freaking DRESS is flawless. The reveal of the dress seriously gave me goosebumps and it's also part of why the Beauty and the Beast remake fell flatter for me. Great ranking, Dan! I think I agree overall, at least with the ones I've seen.
I always forget that Cinderella 2015 is a Disney live action remake just because I haven't seen Jungle Book yet and it is so much better than the other movies on this list.
Hi Dan! Sometimes, when I get a song stuck in my head, I listen to the whole song, and that helps it get out of my head.
It might sound strange, but it has worked for me. My brother is the one who recommends this when it happens to me, and I’m happy for the recommendation.
Excellent content Dan! Thanks.
Finally, someone who despised Disney's Pinocchio remake and Tom Hank's abysmal performance in it as much as I did 😅
Ug, I couldn’t even finish it.
It's not Disney. But the Best Live Action Version Of A Fairy Tale is "Hook".
Here’s a list of characters from live action, remakes to have their own spin off show
1. Iago (Alan Tudyk)
2. Pain and panic (Nick Kroll and John Mulaney)
3. Timon and Pumbaa (Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen)
"It was almost always Aladdin." 😂 Too true, Dan, too true!
Solid list. Thanks for the breakdown!
People really overrate that Jungle Book film. NONE of these films are anywhere near as good as the originals - all the charm and soul sucked out. The Lion King remake is the most creatively bankrupt movie ever made. The only film mentioned in this video that is worth watching is Cruella - that was surprisingly good, and no coincidence the one that was actually a new film instead of these lifeless copies.
👍👍👍
Looking back the only films I have actually liked were Cinderella and Petes Dragon. Petes Dragon effected me deeply when I watched it thinking it would be a throwaway nothing of a film. Such a great underrated film.
Great list and love the logic behind the choices
I’m so pumped for a Dan ranking video
I’ve never seen the re-makes of your #1 and 2 picks. Think I need to change that now, thanks Dan!
Wow, I didn't realise at the moment that the "Love Tonight" song was performed during the day. Wow, pure blinders 🥸😳😱
The “Lion King is an animated film not live action” people drive me insane! The entire point is to replicate live action. Is it using animation? Yes, but if every piece of CGI makes a film animation then every modern film is animated! The intent matters when discussing these things. The ideal description is photo realism.
Right on with Jungle Book. Of all the remakes/re-imaginings , this is the one that makes the most sense because it does justice to Kipling's stories. Story goes that Disney wanted the Beatles to voice the vultures in the first one,, but they had their pwn plans for an animated movie. Yellow Submarine, as it turned out.
Been waiting for a video from you today.. never clicked on a notification faster
It is wild in my brain whenever I try to reconcile that the director of "A Ghost Story" and "The Green Knight" also directed 2 medicore Disney movies. But hey if he can get that paycheck and make more excellent A24 movies I'm all for it.
Interesting that Dumbo features Batman and 2 Penguins in the cast!
One could say it's the elephant in the room ;)
Christopher Walken as King Louie is the best and most inspired casting of all these films.
Personally if I saw my waiters serenading a couple of dogs outside I would give a bigger tip lol
I regret I haven’tbseen the Jungle Book yet. It’s first in my watch list now. Great vid Dan. Thanks for all the work it took to give us this great summary
Poor Dan, his body immune system even gave up after watching all of these.
My nostalgia goggles will not allow me to put The Lion King Remake ahead of the 101 Dalmatians remake. Glenn Close was just too iconic
I know it's technically a sequel and not a live-action remake but Hook will always be my favorite.
Also not Disney. But a childhood favourite of mine
I can't stand it on watch as an adult, despite having Robin Williams
Gotta love Dan. Knew he wouldn't do Jungle Book dirty. That movie made me actually excited for live action disney remakes because it was so surprisingly great. I don't think they've come close to reaching those heights since.
One thing that the original Jungle Book has over the remake is Louis Prima's vocals as King Louie for the song "I Wanna Be Like You." As much as I like Christopher Walken, his rendition could never compare.
Thank you ever so much for doing this ranking!! ❤ I feel inspired to watch many an animated classic, as well as the Maugli and Cinderella remakes, with my 8yrold - gonna be a first time for him!!!!!
Your take on Mermaid...no way. I think you'll come back a few years from now and say, "Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking back in 2023"
Loved this ranking! Will definitely have to check out The Jungle Book and Aladdin and possible re-watch Cinderella.
I also loved that you discussed the logos for each film as that's something I always notice and enjoy when they do a variation of it. Thank you!
Little Mermaid adds almost an hour to the original and the original was the perfect mix of story and song, so no, I do not understand why it is so high. Aladdin also adds a lot because Smith probably wanted a bigger role but it kind of works because it adds more humor, in Little Mermaid it only massacres the simple story of the original. Jungle Book and Cinderella work because both of those movies do not feel like cash grabs, they almost feel like original stories written by real screenwriters, a rare breed these days at Disney.
Excellent ✍️ video. I appreciated the brief review on Cinderella. It doesn't jump straight to mind when thinking of the Disney remakes, but you made a solid argument for why I should give it another, more attentive watch.
I had the same feelings about Scuttlebutt but ended up loving it instead - maybe it's because of how creative the memes about the song have been
Next video: ranking actual bowel movements
The ranking is pretty spot on. Well done!
👍👍👍
Remember when Disney made a live action remake of Lady and the Tramp? Yeah, me either.
I’m still not really sure why people liked the Cinderella remake, I thought it was extremely boring. But I also hated Dumbo & Pete’s Dragon though too and those both seem to have supporters so idk, to each his own I guess.
I’m glad Aladdin got some props cause while I didn’t love it, I definitely found it one of the more enjoyable entries to watch. But personally aside from The Jungle Book, the only ones I kinda liked are the ones that really take the source material in the new direction like Maleficent and Cruella (which I know wasn’t included).
They were sunk once they retitled it "Peter Pan and Wendy." "Peter Pan" was always Wendy's story; she's the one with an actual character arc. And when they made Peter the main character, they retitled it "Hook"!
