Puss in boots 2 is the kind of animated movie we have to support. Whitty, something different, mature elements but still good with kids, stellar animation, 5 stars
Puss in Boots was the best movie I saw all year. I loved Avatar so much but Puss in Boots The Last Wish moved so many emotions through me that I fell in love with it. I was very surprised with how much I loved it.
Puss in boots was way better than it had any right to be. Pinocchio was a stunning achievement but from a pure enjoyment stand point I preferred Puss in boots if I’m being honest
Puss In Boots The Last Wish was definitely the better movie
@@TheSuperMarioBrosMovieFan2003 You must be smoking crack
@@TheSuperMarioBrosMovieFan2003 I disagree. Pinocchio covers a lot more themes and all the voice actors convey a wider range of emotions. Puss in Boots was the more entertaining film though
@@powerfultoa7 that’s why I say it’s the better one. I liked Puss In Boots The Last Wish’s slightly lighthearted tone more.
both movies gave me existential crisis
We took our 7 year old based on your review and you are so right on Puss in Boots! What a delightful surprise and I really enjoyed the animation. We laughed genuinely often during the movie! Thanks for reviewing it!
I was actually rather surprised when they announced Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, considering that it's been eleven years since the original movie. So I'm glad to hear that it's not just another cash grab.
Both films have actually been in development hell since 2008 or 2011. Glad they're getting the appreciation they deserve.
The first puss in boots movie was pretty decent though
The Wolf (or Death) was my favorite part of this film. The way he is introduced by his whistle and his dark dark aura and color scheme, to his very sarcastic way, yet terrifying way, of saying to Puss "I am going to kill you" is done exceptionally well. He is definitely one of my favorite DreamWork villains of all time. Literally, every time he was shown on screen I got goosebumps just like Puss, and the way they made him feel Fear and how that it can also fear us humans is just amazing.
The other characters were amazing as well but The Wolf (Death) is the one character that makes this movie so interesting, deep, dark, and meaningful.
Everytime he showed up, my friend and I looked at each other like it was the coolest thing
@@skatbrother3385 Maybe you both are wolves 🐺

@@scrip804 it's literally on every video about the movie
@@scrip804 I dont think you understand but its all mine just copied and pasted. I am just expressing my opinions on the movie that's all because I think it's really good. Personally I don't want to have to go through the trouble and type it out since I am actually very busy with things in my life lol.
Pinocchio broke me. The ending left me blubbering.
I saw Pinnochio twice at the cinema and it was incredible! It was only released in two cinemas here in Monterrey and glad plenty people went instead of waiting for Netflix
You got it in CINEMAS?

I WISH i saw it in the movies
I think both films are amazing but I have to say that Puss in boots is just phenomenal. Im hoping it wins the award for best animated feature.
I wouldn't be surprised if puss in boots upsets Pinocchio, its my pick for animated feature. It hits on ALL cylinders. It is visually impressive, plenty of colour and art style is pristine. Its got one of the best action scenes in any animated films. The characters are all pretty immersive and have plenty of depth that wasn't present in the first film, with this many characters it can be hard to juggle with but even characters that are secondary to Puss in Boots and Kitty all have great moments. I found the humour pretty good and relaxing, there is very little cringe and annoying characters that seem to fill most animated films (the dog had potential to become an annoying character but turned out to be a pretty important and heartwarming character). The most impressive thing I thought was the themes it presented and how it executed them. It tackles various themes such as indulgence of fame and making the most of what you have, which are generally simple themes but this movie doesn't shoe horn any of that in and doesn't feel forced. The movie moves with extremely good momentum through its 1:40 run time and has very little dead space or parts that were dragged out. One of the best movies of the year and is a must see. Younger audiences would love the sheer entertainment value of the visuals and comedy while the older audiences can appreciate the maturity in which it goes about presenting important themes for the younger audiences.
My jaw was on the floor the entire time and I am still questioning how the new Puss in Boots movie was one of my favorite movies of the year
What’s the action scene about I want to find it on UA-cam
@@smallfryskilledge1550 literally all action scenes are spectacular, not sure if u can find them on youtube or any sites yet so watch it in cinemas to find out! :)
Does it have the Heart, Story and standout Creativity that Pinocchio does?
@@jorge5275 it most certainly does and imo way more entertaining (but thats just becaues im not a fan of the pinochio story)
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and The Bad Guys are definitely the best animated movies of 2022. In fact, i put those 3 on my list of best movies of 2022 in general.
Patrick McHale, who co-wrote this film, isn’t just from Adventure Time; he is most known for creating Over the Garden Wall, an Emmy-winning miniseries produced by Cartoon Network in 2014. I highly, highly recommend anyone to check the 100 minute miniseries out - if you like the dark whimsy that comes from this movie, OtGW does much of the same, yet has an all-ages veneer. It’s a crazy, weird show that I’d love Dan to take a look at soon.
Yes! I was so pleasantly surprised to see his name in the credits since I did not look into the creative team before giving it a watch. Over the garden wall sticks with you with its humor and heart, and rewards a rewatch.
I agree with anyone recommending over the garden wall. Stumbled upon when I had a free trial of hbo max and it will stick with you. One of the most unique cartoons I have ever seen. Really really worth a watch.
Over the Garden Wall is really good. I hadn't heard of it until like last year when someone on a podcast or video mentioned it, but I'm glad I checked out.
I also found Infinity Train the same way, but I found out about it too late and that asshole at WB pulled it from HBOMax before I was able to finish it :(
Which movie?
@@spence8507 Patrick mchale worked on Pinocchio.
I haven't seen Puss n Boots yet, but Pinocchio is a masterpiece. I highly recommend it.
I’m so glad you reviewed the new Pinocchio! I really loved it and I hope more people check it out
Puss in Boots is my favorite animated movie of the year
I’ve already watched Guillermo’s Pinocchio 3-4 times in a row… Then I found a theater showing 30 mi away from me and watched it there too. I’ve always loved Del Toro’s works (even the weaker entries into his resume), and his Pinocchio… broke me. It’s now one of my favorite stop motion film for sure and possibly one of my favorite films.
I luckily saw Pinocchio in theaters and absolutely adored it. It did something that the best movies do: provide escapism.
I was absolutely entranced. It made me smile like no other movie has been able to make me do. An absolute treasure.
Puss in Boots was surprisingly great. It was really funny, great visuals, cool fighting
Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is an AMAZING film. Actually, I consider it a masterpiece, and not just because of the striking visuals, but because of the writing too. AS I said in another review, you start the film in tears and you end the film in tears but for completely different reasons. It's a journey. Also, Ewan McGregor has some of the funniest lines and visual gags 😂
GDT's Pinocchio is one of the best takes on the story, rivaling, Disney's. It's beautifully animated, the voice cast is excellent, and the story is so emotionally compelling. One of the best films I've seen in a long time.
I don't get why people don't think Del Toros is better. It's better in every way.a
GDT's Pinocchio is the real deal. It is such a wonderful movie. I wept several times.
The visual style in Puss in Boots 2 reminds me a lot of Into the Spiderverse and since the first teaser, that's been the main reason I'm excited to see it.
The studio said they were inspired by spider verse!
It mixes that style with it's own unique style too which is nice
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio did something that I did not believe possible, it made a very old story (written in 1881 by Carlo Collodi) into something I found quite fresh, creative, even relatable with its lurking theme of fascism.
I went into Puss n Boots not expecting much. I just wanted something to do. I’m not really a fan of Dreamworks comedy. But I really enjoyed it. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised at how much we smiled through the movie.
I've never claimed to have a favourite director before - but Guillermo del Toro? wow - somebody please fund that person to make everything he wants
Ok, that photo of Mara with the kitties at Universal is adorable!
My Father's Dragon is another great animated film that came out recently. It's from Cartoon Saloon, the studio that made Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner
There is a wonderful exhibit at the MoMA in NYC right now with tons of props, sets, videos, and more on the making of Pinocchio. I highly recommend people go check it out if in NYC. Not sure how long it’ll be there.
Been waiting for Dan's thoughts on GDT's Pinocchio and was not disappointed!! Love your reviews as always
LOVED GDT's Pinocchino! Glad to hear you enjoyed it, watching the special 30 minute behind the scenes that Netflix has out as well, shows the REAL passion the WHOLE TEAM had for this project. Made it so much MORE AMAZING when seeing it knowing the love wrapped into every moment of the film. Thanks Dan! Miss you over at SJ, but happy to watch and subscribe as your general take on movies and film is close (not identical, but pretty similar) to mine so I appreciate hearing your insights on these. I'll look at getting the kids to see Puss, it certainly LOOKS pretty nice. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah or whatever you and yours celebrate!
Thank you for the disclaimer about the wolf in Puss in Boots & the info about life/death discussions in Pinocchio! When our kids were younger I was constantly looking for helpful info to aid our decision whether to bring the kids along to the theater. Parents need more of this 👍🏻
So happy to hear so many people praising Del Toro’s Pinocchio, can’t wait to see it
I took my whole fam to Puss in Boots and it was great! I put a review for it on my channel. I would totally blind buy Pinocchio on 4K. Thanks for the review!
I loved Pinocchio! I was not expecting it to be as good as it was and I only watched it because my husband watched it first and really talked me into it. I’m really glad I gave it a chance! The themes of death were heavy on my nearly 8 year old, but my five-year-old and three-year-old didn’t seem phased by it and loved Pinocchio himself 😂 I’m glad you say Puss in boots is good though because I thought the animation looked beautiful but I was skeptical of going to see it and just wait till it was streaming. I enjoy going to an actual movie theater to see stuff but if it’s really not worth my time, or possibly a babysitter, it’s hard for me to say yes to the theater. But this one could be a fun family Christmas movie from how you describe it! Plus, I am loving the brand new DreamWorks logo! I’ve never cared that much about logos ever, but the DreamWorks one is just so magical to me 😍
Pinocchio was amazing, def a top movie from this year. I will have to see Puss in Boots too, perfect for the GF :))
Have fun it’s a amazing amazing film very enjoyable and fast paced action and emotional story wise it’s a must see if you love the shrek universe
Puss in Boots was magical. I took my 7yo and 5yo (against my wishes), and I was BLOWN AWAY by it! Maybe it's because I've hit an age where I have some of the same thoughts and fears as Puss, buy that movie rocked me to my core. The kids snuggled up to me not because of the Wolf, but because they knew I needed a hug.
I don't think I've been that effected in a theater since Spiderverse or Toy Story 4.
Thanks for your hard work as always Dan ❤️
Both masterpieces!!
We have today (winter solstice 22) off to go to Avatar 2, but it's -10 F. in our state, so we're staying home for our safety. After we see Avatar 2, Puss in Boots 2 is our next theatre trip.
I wish we get more reviews from you like these. Great video and multiple reviews in single video.
They both have similarities.
1. Value of life
2. There is an embodiment and symbol of death
3. Value of mortality
4. Value of friends and family
5. Both have cricket / Pinocchio
What hidden fortress is to star wars, The good the bad the ugly is to puss n boot the last wish. gives me a sense of great reboots continuity
Thanks for the great review, Dan! I can't wait to set aside an evening over the holiday break to watch it.
The Puss in Boots movie introduces the FOURTH iteration of Jiminy Cricket this year!
Hi Dan! Much love from Costa Rica, you’re my main go to for reviews(:
I know everyone says they preferred puss in boots its beautiful but Im not mad at Pinocchio winning it was VERY VERY GOOD . Great to see great animated movies again
As always thank you so very much for the video, and best wishes of the season to you and yours.
I also thought this version of Pinocchio was beautiful and wonderful. This is the 2nd review I've seen telling me to watch P.I.B. even though I haven't seriously thought anything about that film previously.
Dan Murrell Thanks Much! and Merry Christmas!
Loved Pinocchio Stop Motion Film and is an apology letter for that horrible Disney Remake. Excited to check out Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.
Everyone deserves a Perrito in their life. 😊
There’s this tiny one screen nonprofit theater by me that’s playing Pinocchio rn so it’s good to see there’s still at least some ways to see it in a theater
I loved this version of Pinocchio. It is as much about the character growth of everyone around Pinocchio as it is about Pinocchio's own journey. It also has a bitter sweet ending that is rare in movies today.
Definitely not a kid's movie.
Leave it to Guillermo Del Toro to make a children’s movie about death. I can see Del Toro’s lasting a lot longer in consciousness than Zemeckis’.
Puss in Boots doesn't come out in Ireland until February and I'm pretty bitter about it
Del Toro's Pinocchio was the best possible version of a story that I just don't like.
Watched Pinocchio last night, great timing for a review
I already saw both, multiple times, love them both.
Well put. Intrigued to check both.
I thankfully did get the chance to see Pinocchio on the big screen. It started playing at the Cineteca Nacional here in Mexico City on November 25, and not only that, there's an exhibit of some of the original puppets from the film just outside the theater (which will apparently be there until the end of the year)... watching this on the big screen is quite the experience, one I wholeheartedly recommend (my only real criticism of the film is that I didn't like the songs... I'm tyypically a big fan of musicals, but these songs felt rather half-hearted and would grind the film's pace to a halt)...
Even Ciao Papa?
@@jorge5275 I just heard it on Spotify, and I do think it works better outside of the movie... but yeah, I find it intrusive within the movie... I also feel that the lyrics to most of the songs fit very awkwardly with the melodies...
Love how Puss n Boots animation is heavily influenced by Spiderverse, it's so much better than the previous movies.
Yes!! Between this and their previous film Bad Guys, it's clear Dreamworks is having some sort of renaissance from an artistic perspective. You love to see it!
Both are good and had almost same theme in their own way, it's not even necessary said "Better than PiB or Better than Pinocchio".
Pinocchio is by far the animated film of the year. Beautifully animated, full of love, passion and care. Every frame is like a postcard.
Watch Puss in Boots 2
Agreed, except the only movie to maybe perhaps pass that border of quality might be PiB
One of these two is getting the oscar this year , and whoever of the two gets it , I'm happy
I enjoyed the couple of craps that were said, one hell and the load of bleeps from the movies most wholesome character
I'm honestly more than fine with either of these winning best animated feature. I PERSONALLY want to go with puss in boots because damn, this whole films moral is basically about death and that is a VERY touchy subject kids could learn about, and I think it gets its message across better than Pixars soul. That wolf was something else too man.
Better than Soul, really? Alright I‘ll give it a shot.
@@adammccaw WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYyy better than soul, never really liked that movie much, but Puss in Boots was perfect
The wolf was badass. I was kinda sad at the end cause I wanted more
@@skatbrother3385 Same. The only flaw with this movie was that it could've been longer imo. With the amount of time they had they did it perfectly imo
@@bigbrain6711 Sorry for the late reply. While I don't think Soul is a perfect movie the sequence where he plays the piano is still fantastic. Perhaps it's not as obvious to children but still great. I've seen Puss in Boots now though. I really like both but I think I'd agree that Puss and Boots is a better film overall even if both have good scenes expressing their themes.
I’ll have to steal a Netflix password to see Pinocchio. Not buying Netflix again, wish it was in theaters.
From the trailer's I've seen Puss in boots looks awesome. I've watched gdt Pinocchio on Netflix and it was weird
Does puss in boots really set up Shrek 5?
Yep
Great video!
I’d say Puss in boots is the best movie of 2022
Pinocchio is my film of the year. !
I've watched Del Toro's Pinocchio and Puss in Boots 2. They're both excellent movies, but I am more likely to rewatch Puss In Boots 2. They're both very different but Puss In Boots 2 is a much more entertaining movie.
Puss and Boots has great animation, is funny and has a message. What’s not to like.
Dude you totally blew your own good time going into Puss in Boots thinking it was a kids movie. 10/10 for adults
Any plans to review anime again in the future? I see you haven’t checked any out in a long time.
I’m trying to get into anime. It’s a struggle because I watch shows and movies I’m the background while working. My daughter know I liked Harlock and told me about legend of something DNT Die Neu These. I can’t even remember the name. I just have to find what streaming service has it.
Hope it is in theaters
Such art in Pinocchio only makes me wonder what could have been if he had helmed the hobbit movie
Many thanks for this double punch 👊
Where can i get that VHS shirt 🥺🥺🥺
Given the art style of Puss, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I found out that some of Into the Spider-verse's art team were either attached to the project or advisers. And I mean that in the best way possible. This type of artistic expression has quickly become my second favorite kind of "2D" (imitation) art in animation second only to hyper-realism/hyper-detail seen in older classic hand drawn work like the 95' Ghost in the Shell or Akira.
As far as the other form of animation on display with GDT's Pinocchio, I ADORE stop motion animation. Both it and claymation are dying arts which I'm glad that people like GDT and Wess Anderson are trying to keep alive along with studios like Laika. Also puppetry. (If you haven't watched Netflix's prequel to The Dark Crystal which is subtitled Age of Resistance...you really should.)
I love Pinocho Guillermo del Toro ❤❤❤
Love from a Vaush and JeremyJahns Fan!
I think you went too soft on the Puss in Boots review, I loved it as much and possibly more than Pinocchio. Easily one of my favorite animated movies of the year along with Pinocchio, and as of right now I'd put both of them in my top 10 movies of the year period
it sounds like Universal understand how to make entertaining family moives at the moment- I wouldnt be surprised if this movie does very well, as well as their upcoming Mario movie. They seem to have hit after hit (Minons, Bad Guys, Sing 2, Croods 2)
Diseny and Pixar seem a bit lost in comparison- I dont think either of their upcoming animation moives in 2023 will do any better than Lighyear or Strange Worlds. Universal are the new king of the animation box office
“It doesn’t have that extra level that might appeal to adults in the ways that some of the best animated films do” ???? What are you on about? Can you elaborate? How is even Toy Story or Wall-E or whichever animated film you think is better, on “another level” than Piuss in Boots 2? Bizarre statement so I’m very curious, come on Dan 🤨
I watched Pinocchio with my Mom on her old TV. I thought the animation was incredible, and I enjoyed the story and characters. But the sound was really bad. As far as I can tell, it was mixed for surround sound, but sometimes Netflix surround sound doesn't decode properly on certain TVs, especially older ones. So every time there was music and dialogue together, the dialogue was really far back and the music was loud and upfront. Not so bad you couldn't hear the dialogue, but bad enough to be really distracting. It's probably time to replace that TV anyway, but it's unfortunate that our experience of this meticulously crafted movie was detracted from by a technology glitch that was probably preventable. If anyone has any more knowledge of this type of sound issue, feel free to comment.
When is your Avatar spoiler review coming out??
Just watched puss in boots. I think it was so good! I enjoyed this movie more than the last 10 Pixar and Disney movies combined
Ewan McGregor AND Christoph Waltz? I'm in.
The Pinocchio that my son played in is the best one ! Done move on !
I'm a little shocked at the good reviews Puss in Boots is getting. I honestly expected it to be a soulless cash grab.
I feel like I'm the only one who couldn't stand Pinocchio lol No offense to those who loved it. I tried watching it but couldn't go longer than 30 min at a time. It just didn't hit for me and I found the stop motion suffer in comparison to the works of Laika.
Puss in Boots on the other paw is an absolute masterpiece with the best animated villain in over a decade
The GDT Pinocchio is pretty overrated. I didn't like the characterization or lack of familial scenes to make me believe in the connections and I didn't like the unevenness of the story beats. Or how they just left the Candlewick plot dangling and the ending being somber felt basic with it's "mortality = sad" where as Puss in Boots made it's entire premise based around fear of mortality and managed to have it actually feel woven into the fabric of the story where as with Pinocchio it felt like an afterthought comparatively with too much going on.
It's no problem that you and 5 others hated Pinocchio. Everyone has opinions.
@@stevewhite6241 So upset by one guys opinion 💀
Santa Snoopy!!!!!!!!!
I personally feel like Puss in Boots handled the subject of death better than Pinocchio, which I felt like was juggling a lot of ideas and never really had anything to say about them
First! Great reviews, as usual :)
It’s always weird to hear your friends name in media as they get more well known.
You should see Joel’s early work, puss in boots 2 makes me think of his animated short with the animation style.
Ciao papa. Mio papa. Time has come to say farewell. . .
Will there be a Matilda the movie musical review?😀
I think you under sold Puss in Boots somewhat. Yes, kids will enjoy it, but the theme of understanding you're going to die at some point is very adult. Forget kids being scared of Lobo, every time that whistle happened I had shivers down my spine. This version of Pinocchio was brilliant as well. Both stand up to multiple viewings. Both are absolutely at another level compared to anything Disney or Pixar released in 2022. Turning red was a fun film but not even in the same league. I do appreciate the mention of League of Superpets which I enjoyed far more than I expected to when I saw it.
