I Hope your a Numan fan I have been since 2001. Cars is by far not his best by far. NIN and Gary also did I Die: You Die together on some shows on that tour plus Down In The Park and Metal all better then Cars and many more! I been drumming for 20 or 25 years and have natural rhythm should check out my Numan Drum Covers in public and others!

Fun fact: Trent Reznor brought in a vintage 70's era Polymoog synthesizer for Gary to play on, just for this gig.

Fun Fact: I’m on the front row of this video, just in front of Gary Numan (white iPhone in hand).
As a huge NIN & Gary Numan fan this blew my mind; I’ve seen both live multiple times, but this was something special.
First we got ‘Metal’ & the straight into ‘Cars’ without missing a beat.

Just imagine going on stage 4 decades after this hit was released and having a group as good as NIN playing the song you wrote with you to a packed crowd in such a freakin awesome performance!
Best feeling ever I can imagine. What a guy and what a band .

  • @nwcoastlife

For context: He had not performed for a crowd that size in over 20 years and all of them, most of whom weren’t even alive when “Cars” was originally released are going apeshit over his performance. It was the spark that lit the flame that became “Splinter” and “Savage” one of my favorite comebacks by a musician ever. Check out the documentary “Android in La La land”.

Trent is a huge Numan fan
fun fact when Gary was in a bit of a rut musically his wife was playing NIN upstairs (head like a hole) and Gary rushed upstairs shouting who the hell is that.
his music took a more industrial heavy feel after that.
Gary credits NIN for getting him out of that rut and afterward he and Trent became good friends. which ultimately led up to this gig

Gary Numan is one of Trent Reznor's major influence. For Reznor, this is like playing catch with your childhood favorite baseball player.
And I understand the drummer had to spend three days in the hospital recuperating.

That's a good analogy. I heard when Reznor first got big he immediately sought Numan out and whaddya know Numan had been an avid fan of NIN from the beginning so psyched to meet you too wow let's just hang out and before you knew it the synergy produce the last three or four amazing Numan albums ALL of which sound like NIN and Numan moved to LA and they still hang out all the time.

This video is so F*UCKING AWESOME! The crowd seemed curious during the lead-in, but as soon as the drummer hit those three snare beats, the mosh pit kicked in and it was entirely epic!! Wish I had been there. OMG! A song from 1979 being played by NIN and Gary and they ABSOLUTELY KILL THAT SONG!! Loving the guitar tone and skill, since basically the entire original song was played by some kind of synthesizer. The drummer is absolutely killing it, as is the bassist. And Reznor...how freaking cool do you have to be, Trent?! And put the GUNS away, brother!! :) In short, I was whisked back to 1979 while listening to this song collaboration over 100 times. (Don't you judge me). I keep finding more and more ways that it is so incredibly awesome and cool! Cat, you also need to check out the collab between Foo Fighters and Rick Astley performing the song Never Gonna Give You Up. Also pretty epic...Thanks for this!!

I love ❤️ this reaction of yours... one of the best rocking, metal, kick ass videos out there..... I reacted the same way you did.... I remember the original, and adding NIN , is over the top..... I’m missing my concerts and all live music.... if this song doesn’t get you motivated and up and head banging, there’s something wrong with you.....

  • @josephmythosian5432
    @josephmythosian5432 3 роки тому +9

I wanted to add some background for you on this collaboration (kinda lengthy). In the early 90s, Gary wasn't doing so well musically and personally. He kept putting out albums, but he'd lost his way. Then NIN came up, Trent name-dropped Gary as a big influence, and Gary got to hear what his influence had morphed into. They connected and became friends, and Gary then figured out that Trent's style of Industrial was what he wanted to do. The led to Sacrifice and Exile and the rebirth of his career. Gary has gone from strength to strength ever since.
When Gary wanted to move to LA from England, Trent even became his sponsor so his family could all move.
Yes, his voice is as good as it's ever been. One respondent here said that his style has gotten stale, but I disagree. Although he still uses Moog and Moog-sounding sounds, and his song-writing has certain themes that have carried through, I am still amazed that he can write such powerful, personal, and varied music after all these years.
Loved your reaction to this video. Dig your enthusiasm. You mentioned that this performance sounds just like the original song. You need to listen to both of them back-to-back. Certain elements are there, but this is much faster and harder-hitting. He has done similar treatments with several of his old songs, most notably Down In The Park.

The original kicked into high gear. Awesome! I have been listening to Gary since the Tube Way Army first came out.

Cars was released in the 70's all synthesizers no guitar's except bass, the only thing in common with this version is Numan and the Polymoog 280a Vox Humana preset.

Circumstances had us living in Australia when this song came out. I never heard anything like it. My 10 year old mind was blown away, as the video was on TV every weekend. I love hearing this again.

A Legend at play. Cars is epic. Not a fan of either artist (am pretty much restricted to just this one song), but I do recognise greatness, and our Gazza is up there with the best. Great performance of a favourite song.

This is truly a kick-ass episode in rock music. Strikes me as the real tough guys in school (NIN) protecting the little fellah (Gary) who's being hassled by dickless bullies (the world). And you couldn't get a better band to bring this song. Tight, fast, powerful...good shite.

Such a fun song to play on keyboard or guitar. Especially, when it's NIN/GN version. Love it! 🙂
