    To all the halfwits saying he was "cheating" for using his tied-up hand when a piece of fabric was right there, Rener explicitly said, before starting, that he would tie his arm in order to protect his shoulder but would use his hand if necessary. The point was to give us a chance to roll with him while he protected his injured shoulder, not some sort of challenge match with a contract.
    Before rolling with the Megaton black belt, he even made a joke along the lines of, "If I have to use my right arm a little, don't get mad at me." The whole thing was light, playful and friendly. (I was at the seminar.)

      So I can punch someone in the face during rolling and just say “I don’t do sport so it’s legal to me.”?

      No, because that's not legal in or out of the sport in jiu jitsu. heel hooks aren't legal in most competitions, toe holds, ect. But that doesn't mean it isn't a technique you should learn. BJJ is a self defense art and a sport, and the sport has more strict rules.
      And from what i read just now, as of 2018, ibjjf started allowing reaps and heel hooks in brown and black belt tourneys.

    What you explain at 1:58 is just so simple, so intelligent, so logical, so basic and yet so effective... You force his head down to make him put his head up. Brillant. It's so natural to go against the force that he just tried to go against. So the lesson is, if you want him to go in a direction, force him to go the other. Awesome!

      yes this is a very common concept you learn if you have done any combat sports.

    • @AnGhaeilge
      @AnGhaeilge 6 років тому +2

      Same applies in judo. If you want someone to move towards you, you push against them so they resist and as they resist that's when you throw them. It's a common principle in BJJ and Judo. Even in the Muay Thai clinch.

      This is why I love jiu-jitsu. The intelligence, and effectiveness you see in one thing. One little technique that results in a locked triangle. It’s the simplicity in the technique that makes it so impressive. Many people think “it’s something everyone is taught, anyone can do that move.” First, no. Second yes. I’m sure it’s commonly taught but not shown how something as small as that technique can result in a finish. Of course anyone can do this. Anyone can do any move.

    I appreciate him saying he isn't sport. There are many leg locks I use, but I can't in Sport BJJ, I can in Sambo, but even then, there are rules in Sambo to follow. So I love when an instructor allows us to work illegal submissions. Out there in the streets (Not that I would ever wanna fight in the streets and the ground being the last place I'd wanna be, don't be too critical of this comment) and the cage it's free for all, and submissions can come from anywhere. There is this one guy who beats everyone with a neck crank. Even if he's in their guard, he's just so strong, even our black belt instructor gets beaten by him alot and he's just a white belt who uses pure strength, just grabs and squeezes the neck. Everyone kind of hates on him for it, way I see it, he's good practice for the unpredictable strength someone can have, beginner or not.

      +Christopher Corral Brutal strength is effective from the ancient Olympic games. In Pankration (ancient mma) at least 2 Olympians won by just grabbing the rivals fingers and brake them...eye gauging, biting, and strikes to the balls were not permitted, that is why Spartans did not take place in Olympic Pankration, even though they were the best warriors.

    • @changedman7627

      +Christopher Corral Man no offense but there's no way a black belt should be consistently getting tapped by a white belt. I would be going to a different school.

    • @walkingcorpse1224
      @walkingcorpse1224 8 років тому +6

      Willie Jackson He hasn't come in anymore. But a black belt is just another belt. This guy was no BJ Penn, he only used two moves and that was it. My instructor finally beats him tho but the trick is basically to be quicker than him. But just to prove a point, look at Mariusz Pudzianowski who beat a gracie in 40 seconds. My instructor is 47 and started BJJ when he was 33, so he just got his black belt like 5 years ago. But the thing is that he has no shame in losing to belts lower than him. It's rare to see him lose but when he does it's alright. We do have another guy who is Purple Belt, my instructor had a hard time whether or not to promote him but he's been doing BJJ for more than 10 years, reason why is because he explodes to get people off (n it workse surprisingly everytime) He exposes himself alot and he only uses one submission always which is the kimura. If ur instructor were to lose to a strongman that was a white belt would u lose respect for him? Everyone is human, sometimes there are things such as bad match ups, and sometimes people just lose lol A belt is a belt and sometimes even Wrestlers go in there making BJJ champions lose. But it's not the end of the world either haha.

    • @walkingcorpse1224
      @walkingcorpse1224 8 років тому

      ***** That is true, but it's also true that size matters. We've got a guy that's like 5ft 4 and weighs like 120 - 130, he is just super fast and really technical, and that is awsome, but sometimes strength makes all the difference. If strength and size didn't matter then there would be no weight classes. And I know there's open weight but then I see sometimes people like Monson or Josh Barnett that compete against BJJ players half their size and Monson and Barnett always win. N these BJJ guys they face are not anything to laugh at either. There was one competition I saw where this BJJ guy was taking everyone out and makes it to the open weight finals, goes up against Monson, loses based on points but it was like he couldn't do anything to get out from under Monson, sure he would get back to Guard, but Monson would always just flip him over to get to side mount again.

      Actually, you wouldn't have too much of an advantage against a blindfolded grandmaster. He can see the position in his head anyway. Some exceptionally gifted chess players give demonstrations playing blindfolded against multiple opponents and they manage to keep track of all the games. Remembering and visualising just one game would be a piece of cake in comparison.

    I have to believe render gives just enough to cover the other guy, so different levels of people challenges get different efforts, I couldn't imagine what he could do to someone if life death was on the line, to be able to handle anther strong adult yet not hurt them with one hand is so incredible, must people would have to over compensate due to not being great or even good at grappling/ Jj And would hurt their opponent

      ***** I think Rener was just being courteous to his opponent, about the sub ...he would have got the opponent's arm anyway at that point and were this say, a guillotine choke, rener as he'd sorta alluded earlier might be able to grab and connect with his injured hand or a lapel to complete the sub, so grabbing the other hand if its in reach when you're injured is not in that sense a big issue imho .. good rolling from all the participants.

    This isn't just simply a matter of "superior skill" vs the "less skillful". It is more or less a matter of someone, like Rener, who's spent thousands of hours of training and sparring with one or both arms wrapped up. This isn't just skill alone here.

    For people who look at it like, how cocky is he, this is unfair, offcourse he would be better..... Thats just too close minded
    Look at it more like, he is doing this 1 handed. It just shows how good your skill can get.
    And it also shows a more realistic application, on the street u wont always be a 100% and be able to use everything (hands/arms/legs) like normal.

    Rener, not sure if you read YT comments, but I'm wondering if you've got more one-handed rolling footage around. I injured my pinky on my dominant hand and found this vid incredibly helpful. I'm a fresh purple and tried rolling hand-in-belt last night and actually had some success...well, definitely learned a lot anyway. Those details about controlling the leg to prevent turning over, and stepping in the armpit when you have a grip on the arm were gold, not to mention the way you used that spider hook on the bicep from all angles. Got stuck in side control a few times with my usable arm on the "wrong" side (ie not the side I can frame on his neck) but not too surprising as most people pass to their left. Any additional thoughts, vids or advice would be great, since I'm in this mini cast for another 7 weeks!
