    Everyone in the comments shitting on him for being a blue belt and training since 2007 need to realize he is only training in the summers and he plays football for a living. BJJ is really just a way for him to stay in shape he isn't going to Metamoris anytime soon.

      From my limited experience, strength is not too much of a factor. Sure, you can hold on to a grip longer if you're more enduring, my coach has escaped from grips with his advantage in strength, weight and size are handy if you're stacking up, but much is about leverage and correctly applying your weight.
      I've survived a guy twice my size putting his weight on my abdomen, where more strength on my part would obviously have helped, but I've also gotten that same guy in trouble with my much lesser weight and strength. I didn't beat him, but that was because he knew the escapes to everything I tried, and he knew tricks and techniques I didn't yet, but as you progress in skill, a difference in strength and size becomes less critical.
      You learn to work with leverage, points of balance and generally use the laws of physics in your favor. A longer arm is in the end a longer lever, which means you have to apply less force, balancing out your opponents force. I recently sparred with a guy that has years of strength training ahead of me, but little more experience in BJJ. I submitted him twice, within five minutes, once by guillotine where all his strength didn't help, and once with an armbar where all his stacking up and putting his weight on me didn't save him. I wouldn't stand a chance in a proper MMA fight against him, he'd likely knock me out before I could submit him, but just BJJ wrestling, experience is worth much more than brute strength.

      @kengjx5523 7 років тому +15

      Josh Moody hey, I am also a small guy, around 120pounds and I know exactly how you feel. but you should never compare yourself with others, because some people just have natural talent and maybe they just learn faster than you. I have been training for 8 months and I regularly get submitted by people who trained only 1-2 weeks because they are just much more athletic, stronger, faster, learn quicker, etc. It's no use trying to compare with those people, I would say if you are a purple belt you can win almost every white belt regardless of weight. so basically 4-5 years of experience difference is needed? That's just my two cents. You could also try doing weights to become slightly stronger? oh and I once heard someone say that every 50pounds weight difference is as if that guy is 1 belt above you. I use this as a general guideline nowadays.

    • @Live2Win230
      @Live2Win230 7 років тому +1

      Yep man hey man smaller dude here about 5’6 but im bulky at about 175-180 lbs and let me tell you it’s all leverage I’ve rolled with kids who are shorter and lighter as with the proper leverage they can win yes strength can play a part but it also depends on how well you know how the physics of the body work regarding balance once you understand that you can use it to your advantage against your opponents because if you know what you need to do to make them do what you want them to do it’s all down hill especially if they rely more on size and strength.

      Well a lot of football players can also be cocky bas rutten almost got into a fight with Brian urlacher one time bas tells a story about it, it's on UA-cam, bas accidentally steps on his foot and tries to apologize and offers him a beer but urlacher still wants to fight until someone he's with tells him rutten is a former heavyweight champion

      @@nimulosmaltibos9662 100%. Even watching purple/black belts train for competition, I notice that the most successful competitors always keep it playful. When they sweep or reverse position, they'll often go back to the disadvantaged position multiple times. In competition you see the super strong guys occasionally bulldoze a choke, but more often than not they gas out frustrated and the smaller guy survives and finds the submission.

    I love the way you roll Rener! Always technical, never using power, letting your lower belts work, giving them opprtunities to try stuff... as opposed to some trining partners I came across who just go all out on lower ranked people (that lower ranked person being me XD). I hate that... I'm still a white belt, a very average one on top of that. When a purple belt or even a blue belt goes all out at me I'm just like... dude... really? Now you have that big ego? you can be proud that you destroyed that 140 pounds white belt??? Using all your technique and all your strength? what does that prove?
    Every training partner should be like Rener. No Power, and give them chances. That does not mean that you'll let them tap you out all the time! Once in a while, let them finish something, it gives us lower belts the confidence that we can do some things right... But why destroying us? Everybody knows you are better than us. There is no need to prove it. its like having a ferrari and reving besides a civic on every street corner... You just proved you were a douchebag, nothing more. Ride besides him and play with him instead, in a friendly way. Thats gonna make his day!
    I also had a couple training partners who are like Rener. Best rolls of my life. I learned a ton, they could entirely focus on their technique and analyse everything thats happening, and everyone have fun!

      turmat01 Every time you get tapped you get better... unless you quit.

    • @turmat01
      @turmat01 9 років тому +25

      I don't care about being tapped out at all bro. I am probably the one guy with the least ego in the world when it comes to BJJ. But its about respect and fun. Its no use for a dude thats 10x better than you to go all out at you. serves him no good, and it makes it less fun for me. I prefer flow rolling, with the occasionnal hard roll, but you know, I'll compare it to an extreme. Imagine Rener going all out at a dude that has 2-3 class under his white belt. Of ourse Rener will win. But it would just make him look like a douchebag. The white belt will learn a bit, yes, but he will learn even more if Rener would go slow, let him some time to think about what he should do and stuff.
      You need to roll hard sometimes to really try out what you learned, but imo, flow rolling will make you learn waaay more, will be way more fun, and reduce the risks of injuries. That blue belt I hate so much almost broke my arm twice in the same class because he was going so hard, he actually lost control over himself, and was unable to let go when I tapped.
      Like I said. I don't care about tapping out. I enjoy my losses just as much as I enjoy my (rare) victories. I just hate douchebags.

    • @BennyOcean
      @BennyOcean 9 років тому +11

      I completely agree with you. It's better to train people to their own level, just like with music lessons or any other skill.

    • @Spiessi92
      @Spiessi92 9 років тому +2

      BennyOcean I would not say it´s better to train with people that at your own leve, I do like roll with blue, purple brown and black belts. I am a white belt myself and most guys are much better then me, but if the blue and the purple gives you some spots and you can take advantage from it and maybe come close to a submission, you useally finish to guys on your level, you will see were you have do develop, what you have to better, because most of them will know a way to slipt out, you didn´t know yet.
      It is the same thing with positions, I really like to play with the gi and the lapel and with other white belts and they have there problems, I can catch my breath and attack all kind of stuff. I tried this on a blue belt in my gym and just knew how to move and I lost my gribs, because I was not used this mutch to hold my lapel grip.
      So if you want to see where you stand in your "class" sure it´s cool to roll with people that are as good as you, but I like to roll with nice higher belts much more, which give me a chance and teach me some stuff just while rolling about my game. And I think this is also what +turmat01 misses, when he says it´s not fun if a higher belt just pushes his ego by tapping someone which has lower belt and stuff.
      In our gym we do as Rener always says: We keep it playful

    • @ceemee1430
      @ceemee1430 9 років тому

      I think it's good if teachers or people teaching you do this, but you should be constantly tapping against higher belts. if you're taking privates, sure you'll get spoon fed. If you're on the mats, expect people coming to get you. Why you think bjj is so strong?

    Really loved this video. That to me is what a great instructor is supposed to do. You let the lower rank practice technique and you give it to them some so they can visualize the success and then after that you throw in the "what if" so now they have visualized the move and successfully completed it now what's the next move? Then you give them the hard stuff to let them figure it out and think as quickly as possible in the situation. I would love to roll with Rener. What a great instructor.

      I've heard it said that you should always train JUST above where your opponent's skill is at. This is also true for child development. The easiest way to get someone to stop doing something they are learning is to throw them a problem day after day that makes them feel as though they are drowning with no escape and zero improvement.
      And the inverse is just as bad.

You'd be an idiot to pick MMA over playing for the NFL as a career because the compensation is just not there, unless you're Rousey or Mcgregor. If you want to train MMA as a hobby during the off season, that's one thing, but to quit a job that pays a minimum rookie salary of $400K per year to do that full time is nonsensical.

      LOL! I remember when I joined... I started off with gi and pretty much got dominated from the sleeves and collars. So I switched to no gi. Everyone was at least blue belt. I was weak compared to them and weighed 20kg less. I was tapped out some 12 times before I pulled off my first submission... I was about to get armbarred so I pulled my leg over the guy's face (i'm quite flexible and tall) and choked him out by squashing my legs... By this point I had also frantically learnt a bunch of escapes to all the submissions that people had pulled off on me so I wasn't going to get submitted by any blue belts. Problem was I was ALWAYS getting mounted (never secured top position long enough nor managed to secure guard) and then would avoid a bunch of submissions, crawl out and take the back or do some other stuff. That's when I decided to get stronger, so I did the reddit recommended bodyweight fitness routine. You should check it out. Now it's become much easier for me to sweep opponents and mount them... Good luck... As for injuries, my shoulder once popped out and back in three times in the same lesson XD

    • @Fulano.de.Tal.
      @Fulano.de.Tal. 6 років тому +56

      Jose Daniel Herrera I claim that most of those people that associate wrestling/bjj with homosexuality, with the sole purpose to undermine those activites, either never grew up with a father figure, or are feminist ideologues.
      Boys need to play fight, it develops them socially and psychologically. Psychology professor Jordan Peterson posted a few videos about the necessity for physical play in growing children, especially boys, and even girls benefit from it.
      One of Peterson's videos mentions that children need to learn to socialize by the age of 4, children that don't, never learn it, regardless of treatment, they become ostracized and cynical.
      A child that does not know how to play with adults and other children, does not know how to interact at all. Children of age 5 will not play with a 5 year old that behaves like a 2 year old.
      Adults, upon seeing the 5 year old behave like a 2 year old, will give disapproving words and behaviors to that 5 year old. That child will suffer for the rest of their life, seeing false smiles-at best, and bullying-at worst.
      Middle school aged children are horrible to socially awkward children.
      When children play fight, they are learning boundaries, what can they get away with while keeping things fun. The rules are too difficult to verbalize, it is too complex, it can be best acted out.
      A small child will playfully punch their father figure and run off, looking back to see if the adult is mad or laughing. If the adult laughs, the child runs back to strike harder, learning what is playful excitement -and what isn't.
      "Just don't hit too hard"...well what is too hard?
      Children have very limited verbal abilities, they perceive through their strongest sense-touch. Infants learn through touch, more precisely their mouth.
      Social learning in children has a huge physical component, it is arguably necessarily physical.
      Adult men, having grown up psychologically well, and socially well, continue this practice because it is a form of establishing a connection, even in smaller contact forms. Patting a guy on the back saying "hey, how are you!", shows that the two adult men are good friends, much more than just the verbal "hey, how are you!".
      There is a distinct difference between a greeting with and without the pat, or other physical contact.
      Girls are biologically different in this regard, although they also benefit from increased physical contact.
      Girls biologically prefer to sit down and listen to someone talk, and with enough of this, they feel a close connection.
      This is one argument as to why girls outperform boys in school, that the school environment is at a disadvantage to boys, schools require to be still, no contact, and no play, no fun, only in recess and only in recess, which is roughly 30-40 minutes in the 8hour school day. Even in lunchtime children are forced to eat silently.
      Girls, not having much of a biological need for physical, high energy, fun, fit well into the school system.
      Boys are often reprimanded and/or diagnosed as having ADHD in school, sometimes without parental consent.
      The consequence for these reprimanded boys is very damaging, they drop-out. Most careers prefer to hire graduates.
      The effects of society belittling boys' physical contact, even in adult men is damaging.
      Sweden attempted to force boys to behave like girls, and vise versa, with disastrous results. The boys grew up infuriated at having to behave like girls, and violence and aggression crime rates in Sweden increased at greater rates. Rape rates increased dramatically.
      The old saying, let boys be boys, has the scientific literature to support it. A good father figure is there to teach companionship while simultaneously teaching how to properly interact with others, a beginning of good manners. A 2-in-1.
      Reading the comments in this video aren't surprising, "It Would Be Fun to learn from him!"
      It would be fun to learn from him.
      Children are drawn to fun physical activities. Even adults. It is a good thing.
      People that try to undermine it, don't really know what they are undermining. Neither do they know what they are missing out on.

      @@Fulano.de.Tal. Wait, you're blaming feminism on toxic men believing that anything that could possibly resemble a homosexual act is indeed homoeroticism?

    • @Fulano.de.Tal.
      @Fulano.de.Tal. 6 років тому +6

      Bilal Jones i know i posted a long message, so you probably didn't remember the part where i mentioned that those that consider BJJ as a gay activity, were people unfamiliar with physical play in their lives.
      Male to male social interactions differ by nation and culture; men from close-knit communities were often considered gay by american men.
      America has a very unique perspective on individuality, which many other nations and cultures disapprove.
      This focus on individuality, idea of self, rather than community (especially in urban and surrounding areas), will certainly clash with people of distinctly polar opposite views.
      Feminism, a feeling based ideology of the hatred of men, (rather than the claim of the desire of equality of the sexes) criticizes male behavior, often with satire, including the sexualization of male-to-male interactions.
      Jordan Peterson was merely mentioned so the OP may have a reference point where my claims may be further elaborated.
      The scientific literature is well established on childhood development, including the benefits of physical interaction among boys.
      I could have mentioned another professor of Psychology, but Peterson's lectures are arguably the most readily available, given his dedication to uploading his work for many years.
      The University of Berkley in California had posted lectures online, but were forced to take them down, due to the enactment of a federal legislation.

      @@Fulano.de.Tal. I'm not disagreeing with you about "play fighting" when it comes to young boys. I'm not a child behavioral psychologist (fun fact: neither is Peterson). My issue is that you threw in a dig against feminism when you clearly stated the issue at hand: America's warped, toxic obsession with rugged "individualism". That's the issue: too many men (and, people, generally) find anything that intimately connects them with another person physically, emotionally, financially, etc. inherently makes them weaker and/or subservient. And, if they are a man connected another man, then it's also somehow homosexual as only women should "attach" themselves onto men for (emotional, physical, otherwise).
      Don't know how feminists are the problem here.

      3rd wave feminism doesn't promote women, but tears down the concept of gender while promoting fear between groups of people for advancing the leftist agenda. Most of those who manufacture such dialogue are quite clever at manipulating language, and though I respect their right to exist, I have no commonality of world view and thus encourage them to form their own collectivist hives so they can reap the fruits of their convoluted pandering narcissism. • @eljuanote5687
      @eljuanote5687 5 років тому

      One reason why I'm not so interested in training any more. Gracie is in the best condition he can be in yet would still struggle with this huge black guy. Fancy spaghetti technique (as in I'm a toothpick) doesn't work so much in the street.

    • @eljuanote5687
      @eljuanote5687 5 років тому +1

      @Full Moon They are far too comfortable on their backs! So it's less effective in the street. A sharp kitchen knife in your glovebox could probably provide more protection in the street, I think.
      The jiu-jitsu guys will even open up their legs and literally jump into the effeminate missionary position (pulling guard) against a stronger, tougher opponent in the street. A really BAD idea! A friggin terrible idea!
      So it seems that only in jiu-jitsu would a man ever contemplate, for example, an omoplata in a street fight. It's not realistic. At all. Real fights are won through strikes (and sometimes through dominant wrestling)! They aren't won throughout fancy toeholds or heel hooks, or through upside down spaghetti technique, etc.
      And I'll be honest ....
      If Gracie stopped exercising for just 3 months and dropped down to an average fitness level for his size... I would bet my money that he would lose in sad, devastating fashion to this blue belt NFL player in a street fight! Two of them at once would destroy him for sure. Gracie wouldn't stand a chance using jiu-jitsu! This is unfortunate because his level of jiu-jitsu technique is about as high as it can get! Yet he would still lose! 😩
      A high level kickboxer or muy thai fighter, on the other hand, would write a much different story. Fights are won through strikes.

    I need to come back. BJJ is my love. It's been too long. I was going to Gracie's school in the Bronx. I was rolling with purple and black belts that he brought in from the other school, and doing quite well for a somewhat newbie. Unfortuately, I relocated. Videos like this help me.

      +Matt Britzius nah because BJJ has weight classes. Had he been rolling with someone his size he'd have no chance.

    • @mattbritzius570
      @mattbritzius570 8 років тому +1

      Chuckles Sofronzo I said martial arts, not bjj in particular. Plus, you can't say he'd have no chance, because it's hypothetical to begin with. I was saying 'imagine if he had done combat sports from a young age.' If you'd bet against someone with that sort of size and athleticism coupled with years of training, you're crazy.

      This is BJJ the sport not BJJ the street. I don't think Rener would win on the street because Tamba would out muscle him

    • @Tonakide
      @Tonakide 8 років тому +5

      Rener could have put Tamba in a lot of submissions or chokes throughout this entire thing. Watch the video where he takes 21 cops with no rest. Muscle doesn't matter to him.
