Another tip: Gold and crafting materials are extremely valuable throughout the entirety of the game, so in an effort to minimize the expense of these resources, it is best to follow an order of operations when crafting. ALWAYS temper first because tempering is the only step in the crafting process that can "brick" your item (aka, make your item too weak to bother using, and in a way that cannot EVER be undone on that particular item, at least currently as of the start of Season 5). So, if BlizzardRNG™ screws you and you fail to get the targeted temper(s) on your item within the allowed amount of temper rerolls, the item is automatically irredeemable junk (assuming you have more gear to repeat the tempering process to try and get the targeted tempers). You don't want to waste gold and rare crafting materials on the other crafting steps if you fail to get the targeted tempers, so get the tempering out of the way first. Technically, the rest of the crafting steps (enchanting, imprinting, and masterworking) can be done in any order, but I would recommend doing enchanting, then imprinting, and then masterworking. While you can technically enchant an item (aka reroll a single affix) an infinite amount of times, the gold cost scales IMMENSELY to the point where continuing to reroll for a desired affix may just not be feasible, effectively "soft-bricking" your item. Imprinting (applying a Legendary Aspect) is simple and could be done at any time, but there is no point in wasting the crafting materials imprinting before tempering or enchanting if those steps could hard or soft brick the item. Naturally, masterworking fits in as the final step considering, 1) the materials for masterworking can only be acquired in the endgame Pit, and 2) this step could require several masterworking resets in order to optimize the "critical" single affix buffs at Masterworking 4, 8, and 12. TLDR; As a rule of thumb when crafting gear, ALWAYS temper first, then enchant (if necessary), then imprint, then masterwork.
First time trying Sorc in D4, went with Chain Lighting and was following the leveling guide from Maxroll. Didn't know what tempering to put, so I logged out of the game thinking I will look online. Minutes later, Raxx puts out this useful video. So, I log back in and I do what he said, then went into a Nightmare Dungeon (already got to T3 without the tempering, very slow) and I was flying. Thank you Raxx.
just get chain double cast on weps and the unique legs damage on everything else where possible. then get the chain lightning returns mana aspect and maybe the one that gives extra bounces and you basically hve huge mana gain and CL just deletes everything you see.
Edit: Looks like they added "Tempering Guide." Perfect. Disregard this comment Just a thought, since this video is targeted at casuals and could likely be a long term resource for new players, maybe include something in the video title like "How to Temper Gear" so that this video is more likely to pop up for new players who search "diablo 4 how to temper", or "d4 tempering explained". I could see new players assuming that an 11 minute video talking about a "Massive Power Boost" might be too far above their pay grade.
title is great tbh, the description adds all the info you say so people searching for those terms will still see this video if its poppin, keep title add "temper better" at the end of it maybe
This helps so much! I was so confused as to why I was not killing no where near as fast as other people even though I had the same stats sometimes even better stats, the same build with the same aspects and all of the passives and paragon glyphs. Thank you so much man! God bless!
Thanks man. I fail at crafting in any game. This diluted it quite a bit for me to at least make some easy perfunctory choices. Preciate your videos for the uninformed such as myself.
Tempering has helped boost my Cataclysm dmg by over 200% and core dmg to distant well over 100%. The level 2 capstone boss got deleted in seconds when lvl 36. I think Storm Druid is being slept on.

Raxx dude, I love you man!! Thanks to this video I made a new character and my progression is so much smoother and my enjoyment of the game has increased tenfold. Keep doing the good work for us casuals
Thanks for the guide, I came back to the game after about a year gap and was feeling like my Barbarian was getting supremely weak into the mid 90s until I realised that I needed to explore tempering, the change was so sudden it was incredible. I've also since experienced bricking an item with incredible potential - shit hurts.
Awesome! I'm just coming back for S5 since before seasons even started and so much of the game has changed. Thanks a lot as this was something everyone was talking about but not explaining well for us n00bs/returning players.
I see constantly on other videos from other creators about it’s horrible to spam frozen orb yet raxx is holding his down and tapping LS. I always thought that was the way but tried just casting lightning spear only and it felt very clunky at times for me. I understand the end goal is to have enough cooldown to not even have to cast FO, but until you get the build running at the CD you need to spam it, I don’t see the hurt in using frozen orb. Everyone I see shames it when they see people using it. Awesome video raxx hands down my go to for guides and advice!!!!!
Love the guide and thank you for that. Wish there was a way to use up all of awful RNG for rerolls all at once. Armor x4 --- groan --- armor x4 --- groan --- armor x4 --- groan --- armor x4 ---- WTF? Seriously, there is no way that this should be possible, yet here I am, living proof that it is. Wish that I had some of that streamer luck.
Thanks Raxx. Learned these from you last season and have been taking advantage of tempering ever since, but it’s great to hear the whole thing again! Great video!
incredible that they still havent addressed the character lockout after a disconnection or crash even now after multiple seasons, same old problem same old issues...elements sound great but are useless when you cant even login lol, awesome job as always raxx.
Liking this video purely to get more eyes on it. I haven't played since season 2 and had no idea Tempering was this impactful. I went from dealing no damage and struggling pre-tempering, to doing all the damage and crushing mobs post-tempering. Damage needs to be rebalanced in the future because tempering feels like 90% of my power.
I played season four a day or two, and stumbled upon tempering. Season 4 was my first time ACTUALLY putting any time or effort into D4 since I purchased it a year ago.
You can and should temper even rares as soon as you get them - even basic damage to all/close/distant is a HUGE dps boost! Me, I also got very lucky at 20-something and had an Axial Conduit drop from a trash mob. 😁
They may have changed it, but in S4, all of the surges would proc at the same time. 4 weapons, 6-7k times 4, was hitting in the 20k's consistently at level 10. That sicknasty Lunging Strike leveling build. Only costs 7 points.
Did not get any tempering recipes from S4 carry over to S5. Didn't even know that was supposed to happen until I saw this video. GG Blizz Edit: I just saw the blue post saying it shouldn't have carried over.
Another good early game advise is do strongholds at the beginning of a new world tier. They scale with your lvl ( example: wt3 is normally 55 , if youre 25 in wt3 they will scale down to you but still drop the sacred gear)
Found the perfect GA item! Two minutes later, it's a Brick. I've learned to just not get greedy but there have been many items where all 6-7 rerolls get the same stupid affix that I don't want lol
I know you’ve touched on this a little in other videos and I’m sure some live streams but what is your philosophy on damage temper vs critical damage and or critical chance. Which of those in order is most important? I’ve always thought just damage percentage but I remember you saying in another video (lightening spire) that that isn’t always what you want to go after. Maybe it’s build dependent but would love your breakdown on those 3 different buffs. Thanks for all you do!
I’m going to say as often as possible in any video having to do with tempering…they need to give us the option to choose what affix we get but only it’ll cost us more money and even more crafting materials because we’re choosing..”I want charge damage”. So if you want to get your charge damage you have to pay the blacksmith more to get that specific affix.
The only mistake Blizz did is that tempers rarity options dont have min level (and even then rare tempers start to flood the moment you hit around 25 in T3). All secondary/non-character/account progression such as everything on NPCs should by definition carry over with each season.

I did that same thing with a pulverize/werewolf druid. Every 12 seconds 1 shot the screen basically, then run forward over 100 boiling bloods to finish all stragglers off in a second. Between pulverizes I Just shred as wolf lol. Blood boiling is amazing for fast xp.
Honestly, just take the first roll that seems SOLID for your character. +Damage? Great! +Close damage? Great! You really don't need a PERFECT temper in the early game.
I’m sure you’ve explained this a million times but I’d like to know when the best times to temper are. Obviously before the capstones but in tier 3 and 4 I get a bit unsure whether I should temper something or not because I’ve noticed in tier 3 for example you’ll get a weapon that you never have to change until you get to tier 4 but other times a seemingly good weapon will get outclassed by a better one multiple times. I’m sure it has to do with the item score and higher is better but it doesn’t always seem to work that way. Maybe just like a rule-of-thumb you use to figure out if something is worth tempering. Other than greater affixes
What if you started tempering an item without the legendary temper, then later found the legendary and continued tempering. Would it roll on the legendary scale? Also I wonder if some people tempered all the way up without the legendary and have basic temper stats on their legendaries etc.
sorry if this is a stupid question. is there a cap for various damages you can get via tempering? I've heard there's a cap on whirlwind damage for barbarian, but I don't know where you see that in the stats menu. is there a chart somewhere that lists all the damage caps that exist?
Getting the recipes as you level up is one of the very few useful things happening while leveling and giving you that "oh nice" feeling. They need to at least make it so we start with lowest tier, but would be preferable to have nothing, like glyphs.
Another tip: Gold and crafting materials are extremely valuable throughout the entirety of the game, so in an effort to minimize the expense of these resources, it is best to follow an order of operations when crafting.

Great comment - it's a gamechanger for sure for those who don't realize it.
Thanks. I didn't know.

This is the way.
