- The Virus of Life could use a vaccine. Simply put, this was beyond creepy. If Purity--which is my next one (with the other 2 songs you mentioned)--is creepier than this one, I might need a sedative. Vol. 3 as a whole is very "relationship" driven, songs like vermilion, the nameless, the virus of life, all kind of covering the spectrum of how ugly it can get.
And I think you're right, if I had to guess the "virus" is some kind of analogy to love. This is inside us all, we all have the capacity to be like this, and love is just a symptom of the larger disease.
One of my absolute favourites off this record, just the energy is so sadistic and creepy. And what a perfect ramp up in tension on the album, this track is second to last, and right after this ends it goes into danger, keep away. Which really feels like the calm after the storm and is one of the prettiest songs I think they've written
I really need to check that one out.

The unsettling guitar creates a very suspenseful mood in the song, is quite amazing. It`s almost a horror movie made in the form of a song. I really liked your video, your analysis are always on point.

In my opinion, if you can relate to Slipknot songs, you are a maggot. I have a hard time finding songs that would pull on my strings, yet the Knot not just pulls but breaks them.
Lol just so you know, at the beginning of the song before he says "not yet" before the first verse, he whispers "yeah, tell me you want it" so there you go

COREY vomits before every live show usually inside his mask...or at least he used to. Maybe sober Corey doesnt do it in the mask anymore.

This song always reminded me of Michael Myers from Halloween. Slipknot tends to use metaphors to deal with covetry and obsession. Rather, the inherit desire to control and own, especially when it comes to relationships. You should check out the title track IOWA. It's 15 minutes or so long and is just as creepy but more atmospheric.

Cool song and one that I haven't heard for a while. I never paid much attention to the lyrics, but yeah... creepy. To me, you can't get creepier than "Scissors" and "Iowa" though. I can't wait for your "Purity" reaction though as that's one of my favorite Slipknot songs.

I think that the two-chord out of tune piano sound in the beginning that plays twice as frequently at the end represents the urge. He feels like.. a distracting urge at the beginning and in the end while he is "indulging" its playing more frequently, and its unnerving. I think that detail really brings it together, for me anyway.

Hey Lauren,i LOVE all your Slipknot reviews and such. Great stuff! At some point i'd love to see your reactions to some classic live KISS concert videos from 1976-1978 era. You would really like it i think. Check out the live version of "Firehouse" and "God of Thunder" from Japan 1977 and then "I stole your Love" and "Calling Dr. Love" from Houston or Largo 1977.

I don't if I'm a maggot or not, but I enjoy Slipknot, big fan, great lyrics, but I'm very late to this metal thing so don't really know much about how the band history and all, but I'm just a normal person enjoying and appreciating good music :)

i cant tell if its craig or shawn doing some of the screaming in hte song. Sometimes I think it's shawn cause i always took him as the more gruff and gutteral sounding but I can't always tell. There's not like a thing that gives you the answers to these things. But I think that it's craig on one of those parts.

Hi Lauren, I know you don't react to videos as opposed to the songs themselves but I have two videos that I think you may enjoy. The first is Rob Scallion doing his banjo cover of Psychosocial. The ending is the best part, lol. The second and honestly the most amazing is Caleb H Drummer doing Neo Forte, he has other videos but you can see his genuine smile in this one. I always like to play prosthetics right before I plkay virus of life for some reason. Its my favorite song and i just found out that they didnt do full album concert performances so they've never played my favorite song once live. What the fuck man. That's unfair. They never played diluted or if rain is what you want. Though, it would be kinda weird if they had to try manually vommit at the end of the song during a live performance, that would be sicj. ahhaha
I think this song has the exact same vibe as vermillion, a stalker stalking a woman. In the virus of life he is sweating and hiding while enjoying the hunt on the woman he is stalking. At least, that is what i make of the lyrics.
As someone who has yet to read any of your books, (literally just found you today) Is your interaction with different musicians affecting how you write?
I'm not an author by any means. I'm a wannabe writer who failed at finding an agent. So while I'd like to say I have some books out there, that's a lie. I haven't written anything in almost two years. But when I did write, I had playlists for my characters. It helped make them more real to me. :)

I see you have some kind of blog about them, but I haven't really gotten a chance to see what or who they are. Are your characters, giving them a focus point, and creating a working piece a focal point now?
I think about my characters every day but I've sort of accepted that my novel ship has sailed. My writer-self is dead, or at least hibernation or something, not sure. It's a long story and one I hate to even think about considering the YEARS I spent obsessing over that manuscript. I thought that novel was "the one" so I never wrote another one.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee It's not an easy road, I'm sure, but neither are the roads your creations walk. Trials abound, watching them grow and find ways to surpass them is the root of the story. Your story has just as much impact as theirs.
I don't mind this song but can't say I enjoy it that much and never once considered it to be creepy. I never really paid that much attention to the lyrics and in fact never cared to discover the full lyrics, and for me the music is just too experimental and quirky to find it creepy. It doesn't have that intensity or delivery of, say, Prosthetics. I just saw it as a weird bit of filler before the last song on the album. It's also one of the songs I don't believe they've ever performed live.
"I'm going to empty you and fill you in with me" is pretty creepy. Eek!

Corey, Jim ( Phantom of the opera) & Shawn (Clown) r basically the main people who write the songs
but Corey is like the main writer Corey is a Master writer yo the way he puts his feelings into lyrics that could be taking another way (Killpop) is just amazing

You want a song that really displays Corey's feeling and his emotion in the song - Diluted. That's, in my opinion, probably the most emotion he's put into a song as far as I can tell. They (Slipknot) have not played Diluted live and as far as I know it's because Corey won't do it. It was too painful of a song for him. Heard the second part somewhere, can't remember. But makes sense.

@@FragileCurse Joey and Paul definitely wrote a good chunk of their older music, Iowa in particular was mostly those two. Corey only really writes the lyrics, not the music itself.

So. I am really late to comment here. And i actually didn't know this song before listening. But I have asked friends before a similar question about other songs. What is the difference between enjoying this, and say, enjoying 'Silence of the Lambs' or 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'? Sure. It is morbid. But its entertainment and meant to be entertainment haha. Enjoying a song doesn't mean you condone violence or 'creepiness'. Legitimate question if anyone wants to answer on the side of 'there is a difference'.
