- I know Vermilion Pt. 2 VERY well but this is my first time hearing the OG version all the way through. I love this so much. More than I was able to articulate in the video. More than I can write in this little box. It's just an amazing, extremely meaningful, powerful song. And I'm glad I finally was able to hear both parts together. FYI yes it`s pinhead. No one really 100% understands what pinhead does exactly, some fans joke that he is actually a serial killer and they put him in the band to keep him from killing LOL.

My favorite is Vermilion Pt.1 because that guitar solo sells it to me
Jim is the one that usually does solos, but Mick did the solo for Vermillion. Sometimes they trade during solos. Jim is more melodic while Mick shreds.
Here's a little tip, Mick's playing is on the right and Jim's playing is on the left, it's reversed for anything off Iowa.

I saw an interview w Jim that said they trade off on stuff like lead/rhythm, solos etc... and yes Jim is a giant, at 6’7” and Mick looks bigger a lot but he’s 6’4” but a ginormous build of a man.

This album was stability for me during a really rough part of my life. These two tracks helped me through a really hard break up (though I didn't realize it at the time) that I ended up obsessing over for several years. Eventually I was able to realize that it wasn't what I thought it was and I had built it up. I still get so emotional listening to these tracks that I don't like to do so around other people.
Vermillion is such an amazing song. I always thought the part "She's the only one the makes me SADDDD" is so well done with evil Corey making an appearance with the creepy samples and evil guitar notes. Love this album, and glad you are now a maggot, Lauren. Welcome :)

Craig (aka Pinhead) does a lot of samples and keyboard work, although how much keyboard work is a mystery as usually Clown does some piano work on some songs here and there(specifically for the song Spiders off of their newest album We Are Not Your Kind) yet Clown is synonymous with banging the keg with a bat and being 1 of the 2 percussionists in the group, but if you hear audio samples in certain songs that is 100% Craig's magic

I think part 1 is my favorite, I remember hearing it as a kid or early teen and that song spooked me or just felt uncanny to me and I didn't know anything about it let alone about Slipknot, It wasn't until later I really explored it and listened to it and really appreciated it. I appreciated the lyrical content especially, some parts were more relatable than I would like to admit but I remember finally watching the video and it all made sense to me. Part 2 is one I'll listen to remember what was lost and all the feelings I regret to feel or regret to have lost.

As to which part I prefer both as the duality between the manic obsessive beginning vs the solemn melancholic aftermath seeing both sides of that same coin as it does tell a story that needs each other together to be understood

Part two is amazing but my favorite is part one for sure because I don’t think people actually realize how insane Corey’s vocals were in it. And yes i kinda like mega maggot ha :D
I prefer part 2, mainly just because of Corey's singing. Dude's got a wonderful voice, can either be the most aggressive, energetic voice or the most beautiful, soothing voice. He's really good at expressing a range of emotions, all while having a good rhythm to his singing.

Yay 1 of the songs I requested!!!... another beauty is Stone sour hesitate.... some good lines from Corey in that song and a great song in general.. its a song I show people when I introduce stone sour to them.
I actually heard Pt. 2 first on the radio and then Pt. 1 showed up a little later. I'm not sure which one I prefer, but I think it's probably Pt. 2... It was, at that time, such a departure from Slipknot (I mean, the Iowa album was before this!), but it was beautiful. Pt. 1 is probably more in my typical style though. Once I heard Pt. 1 I bought the album and usually just listened to it straight through as it's such a great trip. I'm glad you finally got to hear Pt. 1!
I can't imagine what it'd be like to only know the Iowa era and then hear pt 2. Like, what?!?! Just WHO is this?!?! :)

Well, for me I think it helped that I was growing out of the same angsty years that fueled the Iowa album as this came out, so I could relate to the maturity that something like this showed. However, I could understand why some fans weren't happy about tracks like this one and thinking that Stone Sour was too much of an influence.
Lauren, all I'm gonna say is that you HAVE to watch the music video for pt. 1 (even though it's basically potato quality on youtube) - it is such a proof of craftsmanship in both video editing and visual storytelling!
Honestly, every time I re-watch that video I'm amazed by how they pulled it off, especially when you have some ideas on how they shot it (not going to spoil anything)
Again, the storytelling just by visual means is absolutely top notch level, especially during the climax of the song (when you hear that insanely song screech from Corey), which is basically peak psychosis moment for me - but also at the end of the video...
Also, if you do get to watch it (god I really hope you'll do a reaction video to the music video) - welcome to the Death Masks! You'll see what I mean, they were a pretty big thing back in the day (also make sure to check one of the few live performances of the song - it's a pity that they play the short, music video/radio edit version probably because they play it during an MTV award ceremony or something).
Due to the Death Masks, the live version of this song is... something else!

Part 1. When I first heard it though, it was such a departure from the first two albums it took some (a lot) of time for me to get into, but I eventually did.

Mega-maggot Duane here, and I absolutely loved this reaction! Pt 2 is my favorite because there is just something magical when Corey sings acoustic. Idk why, cause Devil In I is definitely not acoustic and it’s my favorite (along w Snuff which does have an acoustic version obviously), but his voice w an acoustic guitar is another level.

They used a different mixed version of this song for the album, the alternate mix they used for the video I preferred, and they put that version on the Deluxe version of Vol. 3.

There's two different covers for the album these songs are on because the mask one is the standard edition and the group pic is on the cardboard sleeve for the special edition. Also, I believe these songs are about Corey's ex-wife Scarlett... the relationship being that scarlett and vermillion are both shades of red... so the songs are effectively called scarlett without actually being called scarlett. Oh, and the band didn't start using guitar solos on their mainstream albums until this one. One more thing... there's also a "Vermilion Pt. 2 (Bloodstone Mix)" which is an official remix.
fun fact: when pinhead joined in 1996, he played guitar and he moved to sampling when mick joined

I believe 'Carve my name in my face' can mean that either he is so obsessed with her to the point that he loses his identity or in order for her to recognize him from the others, to stand out from the crowd sort of way.
All of part 1 after “terrorize” is some of the best music the band has ever done. It feels like a descent into insanity.
When Slipknot was staying in the mansion recording, they had hella paranormal experiences. Corey especially. They had everything from moving objects to shadow figures, and gear failures including crazy music coming over recording equipment.
There is actually one of these crazy events that took over the board while recording that they remixed and placed on the album between "Before I Forget" and "Vermillion Part 2".
Corey talks about the haunted mansion in his books.
I've heard Corey talk about paranormal stuff in some interviews.

There's a whole chapter about the "mansion" where Slipknot stayed while recording. The book is called "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Heaven". Its interesting and he's funny in it.

I'll take special.....been called a lot worse and megamaggot has a nice ring to it. Was a little worried during two coz I thought our Lozza looked sad but then realised you were lost in music (sure I've heard that somewhere). Great thing about good music. It can take you out of yourself. My music has got me through some tough times. Whether it be my Punk bubble or my Slipknot one, I can lose myself and nothing matters for a few hours. First off, major props to you for being the only person to watch that vid--or the only one to say they did, anyway. BUT! Pinhead!!! That's the part that had me laughing, when he popped up on the side, and I had no idea he even played in that song. I can hear it when I listen now, but never noticed it before.

After watching the vid I found another one that plays the songs Slipknot sample and where they are in their songs. Fascinating. Helps when you wonder what Pinhead does.
I see the lyrical content of Part 1 that the writters (mainly Joey and Paul) have anthropomorphized mental illness, phobias or neurosis, that's the "she" they are referring to.
And in Part 2 the character is totally aware of his internal problems and has to restructure himself to get out of that hole, that's why the sound in Part 2 is melancholic and depressed while in Part 1 the sound is more intense and chaotic. IMHO.
I prefer Pt.1 but normally I can't listen one without the other, for me it's just one song overall.
If you wanna hear guitar solo you should listen Nomadic. Amazing solo

You should listen to more songs from their album All Hope is Gone. It's extremely underrated and has some of their best lyrics. I recommend Gematria and the title track (All Hope is Gone)
The opening is Pinhead playing synth piano, it just has vibrato and lots of reverb on it

Okay so, from what I've seen so far, you're right with the 'Pinhead' parts btw. He does sampling and plays on a keyboard (you'll maybe notice this in live performances).
The story behind this song is about lost love from someone potentially suicidal person's perspective, according to Slipknot wiki. Do what you will with that.
That aside, you mention of 2 album covers. The one with all the members and the red background is the official album art. The 'mouth zipper' one is the alternative cover. It contains the Maggot Mask.
You also speak of the album order. There is no specific order for the songs. Apart from Vermillion parts 1 and 2, there's no songs that really 'merge' together.
I know the requests list may be pretty full, but I have a small handful of more suggestions (if they're not already requested), since you're now more okay with Slipknot.
- Child of Burning Time (My Personal Favorite song at the moment).
- The Blister Exists.
- Don't Get Close.

Ok I might be wrong but here goes nothing...part 1 feels like angst of love and first sight and infatuation. Part 2 is the end and reflection of a love lost and that was never meant to be and the struggle to come to that final conclusion.
Out of topic: I haven't see Snap in your Slipknot list, if I'm not wrong. Imho it's pretty cool, try to you give her a chance :)

i dont really prefer one over the other. i like them both a lot for different reasons. i listen to the first part more though because the vocals are easier to do and i use it to practice sometimes.
Pinhead is the sampler, so I guess he mainly puts the creepy sounds in the background
I know that for the longest time you only ever heard part 2 but for me, even though they are separate tracks I don’t think one can exist without the other because of the story it tells. So when I rank them on my personal list they go together as one.
Having said that, a bonus track on the All Hope Is Gone Special Edition (the follow up album) is a remix of part 2 called the Bloodstone Mix is a take it or leave it track for me. I find it wholly unnecessary, but you may have a different opinion.
To me it sounds like they were messing around in the studio, scrapped that version and then dug it up later and said “Hey we need another bonus track let’s throw this on there.” Just my opinion though.
The whole carve in or wear your face thing isn’t about actually carving or cutting off, I think it’s more about how he wants to either show her facial emotions that he wants her to associate with him or how he wants to have the facial expressions she demonstrates-this song is more about manipulating her to see him in a certain light with feigned emotions, while in Virus of Life he thinks that by taking her, he can incorporate her emotional expressions and mindset and shit into his life. Just my take. “She’s not real” obviously about obsessing and creating a false image of someone we think we love.... have a crush on, etc.
The first track is better to me, but if you understand it and the concept throughout the album, you realize just how creepy part two is because it’s like one step before he cracks and... well... you heard The Nameless and Virus of Life.
In reality, it’s a better-album long-version of Prosthetics.

This is a really constructive reaction, very cool, also the solo in pt1 is by Mick and not by Jim, but Jim makes in Gehenna for me the best solo of slipknot, and slipknot have good amount of solos, and sorry for appearing all the time, and allways talk about the guitars, but what i can do is my favorite part of slipknot.
