these stores are a hit an miss. Many products (chap stick, party goods for kids, some craft supplies, Easter basket goodies, party favors for kids, single-use items, greeting cards) are good. The cleaning supplies are hit and miss. In all honesty, shopping at a dollar tree/dollar store depends on what your getting, what its use is, and why your getting it. It's a life saver for many many folks. If you live in a food desert, or it's 10-15 miles (or further) from say, CVS or Walgreens (Walgreens is a 50 mile one way drive for me) and for some people in my county- there is only one walmart. Depending on where you live in my county, you can be 10 minutes away or a 2 hour drive round trip. Dollar store is 10-15 minute drive-roughly 20 minutes in some area. It's the momentum effect, when you came back browsing for the item you needed, and the store always changing stock placement from time to time. Then you sees something that looks cool and definitely not needed only for a dollar. Theres a chance you will be buying that thing.
I feel like they need to do more research on where dollar stores get their products from; which factories specifically. I wouldn't be surprised if a big company like Duracell for batteries goes to the same manufacturer as a third-party battery company and just slaps a different name on it and charges a higher amount because of name. The same could be said for clothes etc.
There are only 2 diaper manufacturers in the US. However, there are many different grades of raw materials used to produce said products. Duracell makes Walgreens batteries but uses their class B materials whilst saving the class A for their name brand.
Love these inexpensive stores. Helped my family and I go through a rough time in our life. The problems with these chains is that they’re more likely, than the a little more expensive stores, to have expired products on their shelves. I remember nearly buying some of the food there that were a month expired and the kind lady who’d worked there at the checkouts pointed that out to me, I was shocked. And it wasn’t a few items that were passed their expiration dates either. Needless to say I still go back everywhere now and then with a few dollars and in hand and come back home with a handful of items. I’m just a lot more careful with reading the expired dates though. In bigger chain stores they usually have extra color coded labels telling you the item is about to expired which is nice and doesn’t exist in those dollar chain store I’ve ever been in including family dollar, and dollar tree
If you were smart, you'd go with the best compromise that helps you in the long term. Poor people could try and buy in bulk, but rather buy what's cheapest. Long term it's worse, and this is why poor people continue to stay poor.
Everything at Dollar Tree is 1 dollar. I buy my toilet paper from BJ’s. People just need to know how to shop. The best bargain is the books. I specifically go for them. I’ve gotten Martin Short’s autobiography and one of Whoopi Goldberg’s titles, 2 bucks as opposed to almost 40 for both titles. Sometimes they also have yarn, which regular price for a ball can be 5.99 or more, one time I got 50 bucks worth for 5 dollars! And further more, never EVER buy food from the dollar store, except gummy bears because some stores have the nerve to sell a smaller package for 99 cents.
Food at dollar stores often stale and gross looking. Even brand names at dollar stores , but I guess the smaller package equals less chance for obesity? One gets less sugar and instead buys better else where healthier hopefully.
In regards to the brand argument, you get what you pay for. Honestly, if I’m getting a $1 off-brand product which does the same thing as a $6 brand name product, then why should I complain? I’m getting the same results and saving money. I love dollar stores 🤓👍
@@thursdaythought7201counterpoint: most name brands have been deteriorating in quality for a decade. At least dollar stores give you what you pay for. Name brands don't guarantee that anymore.
@@VelvetCondoms Except Dollar stores are usually more expensive in the long run... That tube of toothpaste you got for a dollar is more expensive per oz than the regular store with the much bigger tube.
Best things, in my opinion, to buy from a dollar store is office supplies and greeting cards. On most other things, it'll be cheaper but cost more per oz (for example) than Walmart.
We live off of a janitor's and teacher's income. We avoid dollar stores because we discovered back in college (when we were below the poverty level) that we spent less money over time buying in bulk and buying only quality items. Sure, we have to make trade-offs to do it. But we have a lot more peace of mind not having to replenish our essentials every week. We're very glad that we listened to my mom, who grew up extremely poor, when she told us to stop throwing away our money at dollar stores if we wanted to spend less.
I think the way dollar store get you to spend money is the best way-give us cheap deals. Which isn't a bad thing, it's the most moral way to get people to buy stuff.
I used to work at Dollar Tree and I work at Walmart now and I've noticed that alot of things you can get at a dollar store is cheaper at Walmart. Like hotdogs are $1 a pack at Dollar Tree and they are $0.98 at Walmart and the same with some brands of water for the exact same sizes
I politely disagree. When a carbon zinc battery has a leak,, it leaves acid on the terminals inside your radio/flashlight/camera Et al. When alkaline batteries leak, vinegar will clear out most of the corrosion, and it causes less damage. There is another type of battery sold at dollar stores -zinc chloride.
I’ve seen a few things I bought at Dollar Tree that were 88 or 99 cents or so at Walmart or Target. That being said, I enjoy the consistent pricing, no calculating cost per unit and debating whether I truly need such a big tube/can/etc.
Dollar general is not a $1 only store. You can get name brand items like Kellogg's frosted flakes for $2.50 vs. $4 at Safeway per say. Where as dollar tree you get very small sample size bag or a full box of generic flakes. Dollar generals quality is no different than Walmart.
@@Samuel_Butin the dollar tree in my hometown has full sized boxes of a lot of stuff that I grew up eating. Especially sweets and snack stuff, which obviously isn't good to be living off of but not horrible if you have younger kids that always want snacks. For instance you can get one of those flat packs of cracker sticks and cheese dip, for a dollar.
@@taylorbritt499 I go to dollar tree. They still have a lot of good including some name brands. I'm just saying that if you need a particular brand, dollar general family dollar (owned by dollar tree) might be a better option
Personally, I can't remember dollar store batteries ever leak on me while half of the Costco brand ones do. Also, just because Dollar General has dollar in the name does not make them a dollar store.
Not just dollar stores. All retailers do this. I live in a little town of about 7000 and we have 3 dollar stores within a couple of miles of each other
all I know is I had $2 and now I have 2 wine glasses that still don’t chip or break. so that’s great. also dollar store has lots of fun craft stuff for artists, and even fairy garden toys. gardening supplies that would be marked 700% up somewhere else!! it’s a good thing for people
Most of the items I've bought from such stores are okay quality. I'm more concerned about the customers that shop at those stores and & their quality of life.
Long term, terrible place to shop, But most people that dollar stores target don't have that income to buy in bulk so in a way, it's costly yes but cheaper up front. quick side note, when I was in college I would buy everything at the dollar store and it would last me for at least 2 weeks. I think or single family homes or individuals, its still a better alternative
Edward Ornelas That’s why you have to share club member ships with people. I am extremely low income, but you have to know what to buy from the clubs, like toilet paper and frozen veggies and meat. I never ran out of food stamps when I was getting them by waiting until the end of the month to shop (never go before the 15th).
Spiral Breeze exactly. Or do a little couponing. I coupon a bit when it comes to household/personal care/beauty items and don’t remember the last time I paid for toothpaste, and most of the deals I do to get them (usually cvs/Walgreens) literally takes no planning and less than 2 minutes in the store. Couponing is easier now than ever before. No newspapers etc necessary. All it takes is a little effort and you get free or dirt cheap stuff you need anyways.
I can tell you from personal experience that this is true. My mom always takes goes for like some snacks but after seeing sweet deals and buying unnecessary things she would end up buying a whole cart of things😭
News Flash, most of these store setups are industry standards and it doesn't matter what store you go to. For instance every store including Lowe's and Menard's puts impulse purchase items at, or near the checkout. I live in a small farming town almost half an hour from the nearest Walmart. However, our town has a Dollar General and an IGA. I can get everything I need and be back home before I could even get to Walmart. Have you ever noticed how grocery stores make you walk through the whole store to get a loaf of bread?
These tricks don’t work for me since we barely had enough for groceries growing up. Now that I’m in college the same rule goes. I do wander and look at products, but I don’t buy anything that’s not on my list.
When I go shopping I prefer the atmosphere that the store has and the kind of customers that shop there rather than how cheap it is. For instance, when you go to a Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart and you go to Macy's and Target you see a huge difference in terms of atmosphere and the kind of people that shop at those stores. I'd rather be around people who have healthy food products at Sprouts, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, etc. in their carts and are for the most part well dressed than going to a Neighborhood Wal-Mart and being around trashy people with their carts full of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Hamburger Helper, Ramen Noodle soups, Kraft Mac N' Cheese, canned Chef Boyardee, donuts, etc.
Okay, but if I have $50 for the month, I'll be damned if $12 of it goes to TP. That's where the dollar store steps in and why its the logical choice for many people, longterm costs aside.
Half the tactics presented in this video are not unique to dollar stores. Product shelf placement, use of private labels, junk food at the checkout counter. These are all tactics used by the entire retail industry. The best option for cost savings is to check the unit price (ie: per oz, grams, litres, etc). Sometimes it's cheaper in bulk, sometimes it isn't.
It helped me a lot in high school. I would fill up my backpack with goodies grab a water bottle pay one doller AND ID be out. I played football and was hungry all the time.
I love buying decorations and cards at the dollar store. My dollar store has 2 cards for a dollar any other grocery store you have to pay 5 dollars for 1 card its crazy.
When I am in the US, I love going to the $ stores, if you smart so many good deals to have. Especially as a traveller. I do price comparisons all the time. So buying things like reading glasses, creams etc pays off
I thought everyone knew this. Dollar stores are good for throwing a cheap party with decorations and kids prizes. Sometimes people are looking for small or trial size products. Also, a lot of the lower income people don't have cars so they have to be able to carry everything on public transit so the small size is better.
Here in NYC dollar or .99 cent stores never have items for that price. The tooth paste is the same exact price as in Target or Walgreens if not more. I remember when I was a kids in mid 90s my mom used to but $1 times but since mid 2000s their prices are the same as the rest.
Yeah, you left out the part where Dollar stores fill gaps where the big grocery stores refuse to build (aka food deserts). Throughout 2020, Dollar General was a lifesaver.

I look at the weekly ads and have the apps installed to choose the coupons and per trip I save an average of ten bucks or more on purchases of 25 bucks or more. Family Dollar and Dollar General were my GO TOS to buy diapers for my daughter! Instead of paying about $27 for pampers diapers I’d get the box for $18 :)
Some people only have a few bucks to spend so even if they go to a Walmart they can’t spend $5 on dish soap. They go to dollar to get a few more things they need at the moment
I wouldn’t call it sneaky, it’s actually a very clever and profitable way of doing business. And they don’t invest nearly as much into TV advertising like Walmart and Target, they just put their ads in weekend newspapers and mailboxes which is a lot cheaper than tv ads.
Well, dollar stores that still cheaper. Because the more of something we have the more we overuse it. The less of something we have the more reason conservatively. Like for toothpaste. Did you know that you only supposed to put about half a dime-sized on your toothbrush? And that you're not supposed to swallow toothpaste. It can be poisonous. So and this momentum of fact. It's common sense. If I save $10 at this store then I'm going to spend $20 at another store cuz I was able to say. I get what they're doing but the end of the day dollar stores are much cheaper. And we don't need large packages of things anymore. That's what's creating so much waste. If we actually use Things based on the recommended serving. We could cut our garbage production at half I would say in about 10 years. Now I went and bought a type c charger from my Samsung Galaxy tab S3. If I went to any other store I would have to pay over $20. But here I pay $10. Because I bought two and they were $5 each. So at the end of the day you got to think about this just because you're spending more money on it doesn't mean that is worth it.
I am not completely agreeing with your statement about cutting garbage production in 10 years, because large packages can sometimes create less trash and small packages can sometimes lead to more trash. Think about cookies or chocolate bars, the individually wrapped ones inside a bigger plastic package. They made them in small size packaging or "travel-size", but that would usually create more mess around our neighbourhoods. The park is often filled with small pieces of plastic in the grass, but not large size packages, because people bring large size packages to home and throw them out in the trash or recycling bin, not bring them outside. Small size packaging on certain goods can not only lead to more garbage, but more garbages outside in public attractions. But if you are talking about, say, gift cards, which were not usually individually wrapped when selling them at the dollar store, but were usually wrapped in plastic boxes when selling them in bulk, I can see how that could eliminate some waste. I just think you should be more specific in how large packages are creating more waste. The "recommended servings" usually puts our portions inside of small packages and even smaller packages or puts our portions in multiple small packages. If that is the case, just buy one big package of the good and measure out your own servings and put it into reusable containers. This will usually be more environmentally friendly especially for liquid product goods like soda.
@Grim Soul Well I like your optimism, but even if you meant just the US, or even just in one state, simply relying on dollar stores' small packaging would not cut down the waste in 10 years. Let's not forget that we have a rapid growing population. Dollar store suppliers would only produce more packaging waste to keep up with the growing demands. We would be in luck if the amount of waste produced stays the same after 10 years, let alone reducing it. Instead of thinking that dollar stores' small packaging would reduce waste in 10 years, it is more realistic to think about the 3Rs (making waste not a waste), or to consider about implementing plastic-ban policies (like the plastic straw ban in Canada).
For people on a fixed income, it's vital to have a store with fixed prices. Also, many of their customers cannot access Amazon due to not having access to credit cards & computers, so they have to use cash or debit cards (if they have a bank account). Most dollar stores not accept EBT cards for food purchases, so if a person happens to be on food stamps, they can get food on a daily or weekly basis instead of having to spend large amounts like they would at other stores. I make a list & rarely stray from it when I shop at dollar stores.
Dollar Stores can still provide a much needed service by being located in a walkable distance compared to a Wal Mart or other grocery store for those who are impoverished. Especially, if they offer the chance to buy food for their customers. Helps solve a food desert problem, even if it isn't the best solution in the long run.
Not to mention, dollar stores also sell more items that are made in China than other stores. China-made items are usually poorly made and prone to breaking or wearing out more quickly
Practically everything you buy is made in China. The difference between something at the Dollar Store and something at a big brand place is that the Dollar Store's suppliers will negotiate for a lower cost than other stores, usually at the expense of quality.
Uh, when one has a family of 4 and cannot buy in bulk, then heck yeah, the dollar store is a better deal!!! Not everyone has an amazon account. For example, Dollar General has a 5 off of 25 on the weekends. That is when my family buys laundry detergent and toilet paper. So, yes, in my opinion, I like dollar stores way better than Walmart.
Dollar general also has a TON of good home decor/appliance stuff that may not be amazing quality but works well enough. Pots/pans, utensils, toasters, etc.
I used to work at 5 Below and they sell “iPhone chargers”... I would always see people coming and telling me “Oh my charger broke again” so I have to buy a new one. I would always tell them, “why don’t you buy a more expensive reliable charger that you literally use EVERYDAY rather than spend the same amount on these cheap ass chargers”??? Idiots
I honestly do not get how advertising in general can manipulate someone into spending more money. If i need something i will get it not because i was brainwashed into thinking i need it
The main way I see these stores is how for mid income families many use monthly payment plans for stuff like electronics, furniture, etc. for lower income families that is essentially what a dollar store is. You buy the same product, you don’t get it in bulk so you have to go shop more often, but you also only have to put forth a dollar
Shopping at the dollar tree is like a high for me. I’m aware of things that are a bad deal and steer clear of those, but it’s great! I could go there three times a day.

It's the momentum effect, when you came back browsing for the item you needed, and the store always changing stock placement from time to time. Then you sees something that looks cool and definitely not needed only for a dollar. Theres a chance you will be buying that thing.
Yeah dollar star batteries are great. Best bang for your buck.
When I buy Costco batteries I buy them less often than once a year in bulk.
With dollar store batteries I always need more.
Uuy
I feel like they need to do more research on where dollar stores get their products from; which factories specifically. I wouldn't be surprised if a big company like Duracell for batteries goes to the same manufacturer as a third-party battery company and just slaps a different name on it and charges a higher amount because of name. The same could be said for clothes etc.
There are only 2 diaper manufacturers in the US. However, there are many different grades of raw materials used to produce said products. Duracell makes Walgreens batteries but uses their class B materials whilst saving the class A for their name brand.
B they latst about 15 times longer
Wouter de Vries he’s definitely stupid, but not because he is from America.

Every damn store does the same thing
Been buying my movie candy at dollar tree for years. BLESSED 😂

Every store ...even online has methods too. It isn't only dollar store.
I just go with what I can afford.
No one said only doller stores have a method
After watching TheWolfePit cooking and tasting food from Dollar Tree, I know what I shouldn't buy at the Dollar Tree or any other discount store.
@@abrahamalvarez8692 o yah, never buy MEAT or any frozen food for that matter lol
In regards to the brand argument, you get what you pay for. Honestly, if I’m getting a $1 off-brand product which does the same thing as a $6 brand name product, then why should I complain? I’m getting the same results and saving money.
I love dollar stores 🤓👍
Except the $1 item is of poor quality and smaller quantity so you may have to spend more money just to replace/ replenish it.
This video is Sponsor by your neighborhood Walmart 🤪👌
Young me thinking everything at the dollar store was up for $1.00
YEA,IT USED TO BE $1.00..NOW.ITS $1.25..YET IT,S STILL CALLED DOLLAR TREE. 🤨
Cheap today. More expensive by the time the month is over. Which wastes your time, gas, and money in the long run.
My favorite thing to do at the dollar store was to take items and bring them to the counter and ask what the price is.
Whyyy?
Carbin zinc have less charge, but they don’t leak like alkaline
Am I the only one that doesn’t like getting food items from here?
If u broke u broke
Dollar general is not a $1 only store. You can get name brand items like Kellogg's frosted flakes for $2.50 vs. $4 at Safeway per say. Where as dollar tree you get very small sample size bag or a full box of generic flakes. Dollar generals quality is no different than Walmart.
Sometimes you do get what you pay for. Sometimes stuff is cheap and sometimes stuff is inexpensive.

He kept whispering for emphasis and it made me uncomfortable.
As if he's telling a dirty little secret
I didn't like the sound he makes with his mouth.
Personally, I can't remember dollar store batteries ever leak on me while half of the Costco brand ones do.
Also, just because Dollar General has dollar in the name does not make them a dollar store.
It's like a mini Walmart
Exactly. Thank you. Shit was bothering me the whole video
The same goes for family dollar. It’s cheap but most things there do not cost one dollar.
Family Dollar: “Yoo chill lol”
Lol
I can totally hear them saying that
Not just dollar stores.
Yet you read that buying in bulk is also complicated and not an instant deal
I only started shopping there when I found dollar tree diy videos 😅
For those smaller size bottle of toiletries (not the tiny sizes), those are great for travel under the 3.4 oz and having enough
3:08 "BUT NOT IN A GOOD way"
A smart shopper is not just someone who cares the price, but rather a combination of being sensitive to price and being aware to the product quality.
Why, does it make you feel sorry for them?
Trashy people are MY people. Plus, if you're lucky, you might see a fight break out.
That ain't stopping me from getting my hot cheetos
I guess just be a smarter shopper and you won't get ripped off by anyone! 💯
Movie candy, greeting cards, pens/pencils, some kitchen utensils...but that's it
Honestly I go in and out often times with one Item guess I’m a outlier lol
I hear you, I go there for something specific. I dont need to buy more than that.
I would buy those glowy light sticks even as an adult 😅
Honestly same
Okay, but if I have $50 for the month, I'll be damned if $12 of it goes to TP.
Exactly. These videos feel like hastily made, clickbait trash.
It helped me a lot in high school. I would fill up my backpack with goodies grab a water bottle pay one doller AND ID be out.
I played football and was hungry all the time.
2:32 Since I heard toilet paper is sold out, I think dollar stores are gonna be filled with people.
I love buying decorations and cards at the dollar store. My dollar store has 2 cards for a dollar any other grocery store you have to pay 5 dollars for 1 card its crazy.
Dollar stores don't make money from shoppers, they save money by not sweeping or mopping their floors.
When I am in the US, I love going to the $ stores, if you smart so many good deals to have. Especially as a traveller. I do price comparisons all the time. So buying things like reading glasses, creams etc pays off
I'll gladly pay an extra $1-2 if it keeps me from fighting the wave of idiots at Walmart.
Literally Nobody:
Business Insider: Dollar Stores are bad for you. Here's the bad truth.
If you just steal stuff you don't have to pay, take that marketing department!
I love my local Dollar Tree! I go there for snacks and treats for my dog. It is true though that I spend more than I should when going there.
I wouldn't trust their pet treats
Yeah, you left out the part where Dollar stores fill gaps where the big grocery stores refuse to build (aka food deserts). Throughout 2020, Dollar General was a lifesaver.
Wow i didn’t need a video to figure this brain buster out.
Uh I bought a pair of food scissors for $1.08. I’m not concerned lol

I love the dollar store. Who pays brand name for bleach and shit. I always buy what I need.
Some people only have a few bucks to spend so even if they go to a Walmart they can’t spend $5 on dish soap. They go to dollar to get a few more things they need at the moment
tlc cheapskates have entered the chat:
I came to dollar tree for one thing and left after spending over $100.
I think their strategy works.
Only ogs remember when they used to be called 99 cents store.
87cents and up stores to be exact.
I have a place called the 99 cent store where I live.
Actually the true OG's remember the 5 and dime stores.
And yes, dollar stores can have great deals.
@@milliezhu I'm optimistic. And I just mean in America. We're talking about global that's going to be a couple of centuries.
At the dollar store pick the bigger AIM toothpaste
Next video: Sneaky ways Buissness insider gets you to click on videos 😂😂😂
Dollar Stores can still provide a much needed service by being located in a walkable distance compared to a Wal Mart or other grocery store for those who are impoverished. Especially, if they offer the chance to buy food for their customers. Helps solve a food desert problem, even if it isn't the best solution in the long run.
I like dollar store too and hope that one of them is in my neighborhood.
Thanks for this informative video. When I’m in a $tree store I discourage people from buying the batteries. They usually have already expired.
Literally every store
Sadly not everyone can pay less with bulk purchase. It's expensive to be poor.
Why does this dude sound like he is whispering in some parts of the video?
I've always said shopping at dollar stores is way more expensive and kind of a scam and no one ever believes me
Am I seriously the only person who feels like spending $1 is already spending a lot? Hahahahahaha
Idiots
Ok? I love the dollar store

I honestly do not get how advertising in general can manipulate someone into spending more money. If i need something i will get it not because i was brainwashed into thinking i need it
This is why my husband comes with me to the dollar store and 😂
The main way I see these stores is how for mid income families many use monthly payment plans for stuff like electronics, furniture, etc. for lower income families that is essentially what a dollar store is. You buy the same product, you don’t get it in bulk so you have to go shop more often, but you also only have to put forth a dollar
Why is that lady lying. She most likely shops there for her family of 8
Shopping at the dollar tree is like a high for me. I’m aware of things that are a bad deal and steer clear of those, but it’s great! I could go there three times a day.
I think people know what they are paying for
